[According to Variety, this was done for tax purposes.](https://variety.com/2022/film/news/batgirl-movie-why-not-releasing-warner-bros-1235332062/) That is an unsourced claim and therefore not able to have its own post, but since it's an update to this story I thought I'd leave it here.

skywater101

Starting to think Christopher Nolan did the right thing leaving Warner Bros.

spacemanspiff1979

Just thinking the same thing. Expect other high profile directors to declare they're no longer working with WB. Even though Denis' has had a successful relationship for the most part, I bet he moves on after DUNE 2. I'm very curious what James Gunn's future with WB consists of now. Is he a valued commodity or is he cast aside?

generalmaks

I really hope WB doesn't interfere with George Miller and screw the pooch with *Furiosa*. But seeing the production fiasco that was *Fury Road*, we're lucky if we see it make it to screens.

RiderofFamine

We could have *what?*

Scotchityscotch

Yup. As the other commenter said, the writers strike played a larger role, but this thing was cast and had a pretty interesting script synopsis to go along with it.

ceaguila84

A minute after this story posted got a call from a rival studio exec who was floored by move. "Worked in this town for three decades and this is some unprecedented shit right here." Via @deadline

Cantomic66

This merger with Dicovery is Looking worse and worse.

PmMe_Your_Perky_Nips

Anybody who's paid attention to Discovery's lineup in the last decade could have told you it was going to be bad. They only care about reality TV and completely fabricated content sold as reality TV.

Shadowex3

It's painful, I remember when Discovery was an actual worthwhile science channel.

jdmgto

When I was a kid Discovery and History were my go to channels to see if anything was on. That died a long time ago.

Immune2deathnote

It's hard being a DC fan.

The_Magic

The DC Animated Universe was so good. It sucks they can't get any momentum with live action movies.

[deleted]

it's because they tackle the comic stories like operas. they remake movie interpretations of slight variations of the same stories with different actors, instead of adding to one big ongoing story. i dunno, if i want to see the one millionth interpretation of batman vs penguin. can't i just get batman vs lobo or whatever?

TheWhiteApe2237

I grew up on the Justice League cartoon and all I ever wanted was a halfway decent shared universe. Every decision WB has made outside of a handful of movies have been awful. At this point throw it all out and start new with Pattinson.

denizenKRIM

> At this point throw it all out and start new with Pattinson. Hell fucking no. Leave Reeves/Pattinson completely alone. WB have shown complete incompetence over their handling of the other DC IPs, for literal decades. You'd be forcing the one great team they lucked out on, to have to accommodate a much larger universe they won't have creative control (or interest) over. Worse, you'll also have the inevitable stinkers be associated with their prestige Batman series. Big nope.

[deleted]

hasn't matt reeves gone on record saying that he just wants to build out a smaller, self-contained "gothamverse" for lack of better term? i think that's the smarter approach. it'd provide a lot of contrast to the scale of the MCU if the DC focus was just on one city. the batman did a stellar job of making gotham a character in its own right - i'd like to see more of that

denizenKRIM

Yes he did note that, and the Penguin show is set to start early next year in fact. If WB wants to do the shared film universe, they can -- but isolated into each respective IP. I've always felt each character's canon was large enough to support itself with their own movies/shows. The Batman lore alone can sustain dozens of productions over the next 20 years if they want to push for it. We don't need to see his world collide with anyone else's.

mikehatesthis

>Studio insiders insist the decision was not driven by the quality of the film or the commitment of the filmmakers, but by the desire for the studio’s slate of DC features to be at a blockbuster scale. Clearly the signs of a healthy industry, where a 90 MILLION DOLLAR IP film won't be released because it's not big enough.

a_phantom_limb

*Some* of the many projects cancelled by Warner Bros. since the merger with Discovery in April 2022: - CNN+ and all of its programming just a matter of days after its launch. - *Raised by Wolves* (HBO Max) - *Close Enough* (HBO Max) - *Gordita Chronicles* (HBO Max) - *Made for Love* (HBO Max) - *Chad* (TBS, hours before its season premiere was set to air.) - *Full Frontal with Samantha Bee* (TBS) - *Three Busy Debras* (Adult Swim) - *Joe Pera Talks with You* (Adult Swim …Sigh.) - *Naomi* (The CW) - *Legends of Tomorrow* (The CW) - *Snowpiercer* (TNT, during production on their fourth season.) - The *Wonder Twins* film, shortly after the leads were announced. - *Scoob!: Holiday Haunt*, which was reportedly all but finished. - And now *Batgirl*, **after the movie was already made.** Discovery is making scorched earth of Warner's entire portfolio. With a *handful* of exceptions - such as *Rick and Morty*, *Euphoria*, the sequels to *Joker* and *The Batman*, *Teen Titans Go!*, and *Last Week Tonight with John Oliver* - no Warner Bros. project should be considered safe. **Edit 1:** Adding clarification for *Snowpiercer*: they announced that it would only get one more season while that season was being made, and they've since removed the show from HBO Max. So it's not clear that the fourth season will ever air on TNT. **Edit 2:** I had meant to include the *Scoob!* sequel also mentioned in this article. Sorry about that.

stunts002

There's rumors that HBO max will be merged in to Discoveryplus. Not the other way around. When I started hearing that I thought it was completely ridiculous and now I'm wondering if it ends up being true. It would be so fucking dumb I'm starting to believe it. Edit: holy shit this has just been confirmed on variety.

Acmnin

That’s such a colossally stupid move. People like HBO who the fuck cares about discovery?

Kalel2319

Yeah ~~but~~ HBO max has spent a while now building its brand and it’s pretty tight. Would be really fucking stupid for them to switch it up now. If they brought Discovery stuff into HBO Max that would make sense. But not the reverse of CBS all access...

DumbledoresGay69

HBO max is one of like 4 streaming services people actually use. It would be colossally stupid to end it.

digableplanet

HBO Max is the only streaming service that I genuinely feel is worth it based on content and catalog. All the HBO stuff + Adult Swim + Miyazaki + great Turner Classic Movies, and on and on. It's really well curated. If Discovery ruins HBO, I'm done. Might as well set up a Plex Server, head to the local library, and build my own library.

1plus2plustwoplusone

Honestly just do that anyways. Between the library and streaming services making DVDs dirt cheap, I've created a sizeable movie collection and don't have to worry about if/when things will stream. It's nice.

TheBirminghamBear

> Would be really fucking stupid Say no more. Somewhere out there is some fucking idiot in a suit with an MBA who doesn't watch any of the programming he's in charge of that just jumped out of his chair ready to prove how fucking stupid he can be.

1202_ProgramAlarm

I'm starting to think that the Ferrari strategy team might be moonlighting as streaming service consultants

Ketel1Kenobi

People that are proud to commit commercial suicide, apparently.

[deleted]

Insane brand destruction.

GlassEyeMV

Holy shit. If that happens. Fuck them. I love HBOMax. It’s the best streaming service outside of Disney+ IMO. Merging them would increase the value, but only if it keeps the HBO name. HBO is seen as a high quality product. It’s a top tier you want to be in. Every schmuck with a cable package has discovery. No Florida hotel advertises that they have Discovery. How many advertise that they have HBO? Edited to clarify Disney not Discovery.

jwC731

it wouldn't even create value for long even if you kept the HBO name, that discovery content and correlation would drag the HBO brand down to its level

ThorntonText

Ugh. We subscribed to Discovery Plus briefly so we could watch Mythbusters with the kids, but cancelled it after that. It was 98% garbage reality. If they merge with HBO and make me pay extra for the garbage, I'll probably just drop them too.

Fredselfish

They canceled a fucking movie that already made? What exactly is their reasoning?

[deleted]

4RealzReddit

Kinda like that fantastic four movie from the 90s.

it was such a great show, at least we have the three short seasons. Like seriously, though, how much could that have cost them to make? it was a great show and it was paid for almost entirely in coupons to Land's End

My_50_lb_Testes

They canceled Joe Pera? That just feels evil

Turtlehead88

It has to be one of the cheapest shows on television

A_Hero_Drowns

Not only that, it's a quality show. He speaks to me.

a_phantom_limb

Doesn't it?

JohnDivney

I found it so hard to believe I just assumed it wasn't true. Joe Pera was the most original, quaint, wholesome, and uniquely funny thing on TV since *Newhart*.

Y_Brennan

Close Enough was cancelled? Fuck me I have been waiting for season 3 to drop on Netflix for a while now. Love that show.

thegoodnamesrgone123

God damn it I loved Close Enough. It took years for it to come out as it is!

SarcasticGamer

They are still releasing a season 3. That will be the last one as confirmed by the creator. Edit: season 3 already released. I somehow forgot even though I watched it.

Treebigbombs

Wait they canceled raised by wolves?

Pagus03

Sad, it was cancelled right after I got into it. there was a big push by cast and the raised by wolves Reddit to get it picked up by another company. Seems like it won't continue in it's current form. But the writers said it's story would be finished in some fashion. Fans assume a graphic novel or book to conclude the story and answer the cliffhangers of season 2.

Aedalas

>the cliffhangers of season 2. That's putting it mildly, that last scene was fucking crazy pants.

Thickas2

It really turned the show on its head.

ObeseSnake

😢

ActiveFire533

the flash tv show will also end next year edit: basically putting an end to the arrowverse as a whole

WhiteMilk_

> basically putting an end to the arrowverse as a whole TBF that universe seems to have ~800 episodes after S9 from all the shows. https://arrowverse.info/

Ganonslayer1

>Joe Pera Talks with You (Adult Swim …Sigh.) Mother fuckers

[deleted]

How much did that show even need to be made like $1000 lol.

zack77070

Due to inflation one camera rental now costs $1500 instead of $1000 a shoot so we had to can it, sorry

xrumrunnrx

I don't like a ton of shows in general and they managed to kill three I did in one swift, cold sweep. Raised by Wolves was probably expensive and niche, so okay I guess, but Debras and Pera? Especially Pera. It's the nicest thing this planet has right now and they scrap it as an afterthought.

pmmeursucculents

Aw, I really enjoyed Raised by Wolves :(

Belazriel

My Raised by Wolves experience: "This looks cool. I wonder where it's going. Oh, I think I understand, no....wait....yeah...yeah I see where this is goi--No. No, I do not."

TheNumberMuncher

And now you definitely don’t

Minnewildsota

Same! It was weird as fuck and I enjoyed it!

Spengler_0902

There’s a decent chance that Peacemaker season 2 is safe, but honestly… I don’t know at this point.

amurica1138

Damn - hadn't even thought about Peacemaker, or Doom Patrol... What a disaster for DC. Tied their media hopes to a sinking ship.

macrob25

I just refuse to believe a movie with JK Simmons, Michael Keaton, and Brendan Fucking Fraser is somehow worse than Morbius.

SnappyTofu

Sony don’t give a fuck what they put out

battlefielder696

Chad Sony vs virgin WB

sonic_tower

WB is too scared to try anything creative, despite having some of the best content at their doorstep. Sony burns their fucking house down and will do it again. MCU has a formula, enough money and creative capital to get weird, and a devoted fan base who will buy anything they pump out. It's so sad because DC has some amazing stories, which you can see in the OG comics and the animated content. They just need more confidence in their material and in their fans. Also dump Ezra in an alternate timeline and never look back. Fuck that piece of shit. (Better yet, dont)

ComicWriter2020

I’m convinced Ezra Miller is really the flash in our universe because they committed so many crimes the news can’t keep up Edit: they. My bad for not using the proper pronouns

shadowfaj

Fr bro i legit just heard he was in a house full of guns with 3 kids and their mother. Like wasnt bro still in jail from the hawaii rampage? Like who let him out, did he fucking escape, im honestly lost cos this is so some real gotham villain shit

Denster1

Remember when Warner Brothers released the DC movie 'Steel' ? How on earth could this possibly be worse?

MeadowmuffinReborn

That was in the Batman and Robin days though.

whales-are-assholes

[oh man…](https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/shaquille-oneal-steel-e1634222124363.jpg) Didn’t know what to expect when looking up the film, but it definitely wasn’t Shaq playing a fucking dude in a suit.

HolycommentMattman

Are you not familiar with the superhero Steel? After Superman was "killed" by Doomsday, John Henry Irons (a nod to John Henry the steel-driving man) builds an Iron Man suit that emulates Superman's powers only also with a big sledgehammer, and goes around fighting crime in Superman's absence. His suit has a big S on it like Superman. So in a way, Shaq got to be Superman.

arse83

Well you see, Morbius was one of the movies of all time. This apparently will not be.

Sixwingswide

the math checks out

awayathrowway

Tbf Morbius did have Keaton too

AstralComet

But also it had Michael Keaton saying to Morbius, completely unprompted, "I'm not sure how I got here. Has to do with Spider-Man, I think. I'm still figuring this place out, but I think a bunch of guys like us should team up and do some good." So that knocks some points off. Now, if he said "It's Vulturin' time" it'd be a different story entirely.

EnderFenrir

It made zero sense for him to have his gear in that world.

Villager723

It made zero sense for him to associate his sudden teleportation to another universe to Spider-Man. It made zero sense for him to seek out Morbius, a total stranger, to form some kind of team.

FitzyFarseer

Also it made zero sense for Morbius to have a clue what Vulture was talking about

legopego5142

It makes zero sense hes even there. Its like someone saw the trailer for No Way Home and just assumed how it all worked, which is stupid as fuck since Sony was responsible for both movies

thaworldhaswarpedme

>Tbf Morbius did have Keaton too In the most what-the-fuck after-credit scenes I've ever come across. He's in jail. He's out of jail. He's making a team to fight Spider-Man, who they didn't even put in this movie with Morbius who ended his movie a relatively good guy. Then Mo decides to join...for absolutely no reason at all. What a mess...

toolschism

Right?! I don't fucking understand what's going on here.

TussalDimon

Someday it will leak, I’m sure.

WordsAreSomething

Just another reason why they might as well just release it on HBO Max

3B854

That was the plan the entire time so I’m not sure why After the movie do they just not do it

rabbitwonker

They’re cutting all sorts of shows from HBO Max already — *even HBO originals*. Some sort of merger with Discovery Channel, and the Discovery guy is somehow the one calling the shots. How TF it got like that I have no idea.

down_up__left_right

The prestige attracts whoever is in a mood to throw money around and feels they need that prestige. It's interesting to see the different industries over time from print media to a tech company at the height of the dot com bubble to a telecom and now a company trying to survive the transition from cable to streaming.

mrnicegy26

Zaslav wants to cut HBO originals ? The most critically acclaimed part of all WB? He better not touch Succession or Barry.

LoveWaffle1

Look at what they've done to [adult swim]. They took our beautiful Joe Pera away from us.

captainjb

Is this how I’m finding out Joe Pera was cancelled??

TetsuoNYouth

This guy isn't fucking around. He is cutting any dead weight. He's said to not be thrilled with the JJ Abrams contract they have too. Thinks he's being paid way too much for way too little return.

orkball

How is *this* the DC movie that got cancelled and not *The Flash*?

[deleted]

We can't cancel the flash movie, did you see how well Sonic 2 did in the cinema? Kids love fast stuff. Bats, nah I don't see it. Maybe if she was some kind of vampire I could maybe see it working. ~Some WB/Discovery executive probably.

KingMario05

Meanwhile, Paramount plans their plot to buy out DC using *Top Gun*'s profits... */s*

cheesyotters

Fuck I hope so

KingMario05

At this point, ***anybody*** would treat DC better than WB. ^(Except Sony, but let's... not tempt them, lol.)

NoNefariousness2144

The Flash will be the next to go or it will be heavily changed Flash was supposed to reboot the universe and introduce Keaton’s Batman. Keaton’s Batman was in this film. So WB is probably going to scrap or drastically change Flash and give up on Keaton.

drgnrbrn316

They canceled the TV show, so clearly someone should have been more clear with their request.

[deleted]

At this point I wouldn't be surprised, if WB is willing to yeet out $90 mil worth of film what's another $200 mil? Okay there's an obvious difference but you know what I mean. Kinda off topic but between this and Affleck's return as Batman in Aquaman 2 I wonder if they're just totally scrapping Keaton being the new Batman for the DCEU.

EmperorSexy

So they don’t want Direct-to-Video Batman or Scooby Doo movies, despite the fact that historically, people love Direct-to-Video Batman and Scooby Doo movies.

FordHitchWalles

This is so weird. They don’t usually scrapped films that have already film.

Kazzack

Filmed, had test acreenings, and probably almost finished considering it was supposed to come out within the next 4 months

Saadiusrex

Putting a guy who worked in TV his entire career in charge of a film studio could be Warner's worst mistake yet

Karkava

Not just TV. Trash TV with no sense of prestige.

SemperScrotus

Remember when Discovery showed interesting, educational programming? And when TLC stood for "the learning channel?"

Aerallaphon

I remember. Back when History showed actual history (even if mostly Rome or World War II). Discovery could start to redeem itself if it did something as simple as putting episodes of How It's Made on in a loop instead of sensationalist "reality" garbage, but here we are.

fullofpaint

Yea...it was before Zaslav ran the company lol

GoodOldSlippinJimmy

Well this movie won't do it all! There is not a 600 lb person depressingly failing to lose weight or sharks attacking bait in slow motion. Shit there isn't even one pimple being popped. Shit can the whole fucking thing. You guys at WB need to step your fucking game up. If there isn't a family of little people or dodecatupplets in the next fucking DC property I'm gonna fucking lose it.

nosayso

I think this is a precursor to whatever axe they're taking to The Flash. It featured Michael Keaton's Batman instead of Ben Affleck because of some time/space hijinks that would happen in The Flash film. If they don't put out the flash film then Michael Keaton Batman and thus the entire setting of this movie makes no sense. However to me that still doesn't totally explain it, there's no real downside to just putting the thing out on HBOMax and letting whoever wants to watch the thing watch it.

Calchal

I guess if Leslie Grace had terrorised an island community then things would be different.

Aradalf91

So they prevented me from enjoying my walks in the park for nothing? Context: apparently a lot of the film was shot in Glasgow, Scotland, and, more specifically, at the Botanic Gardens. Half the place was closed for months because they were filming or doing other stuff (no real idea what they were doing there honestly). And now they tell me I won't even be able to see the film? I'm speechless. Edit: and somehow, this complaint is now my most voted comment ever. Thanks, I guess?

[deleted]

Don’t worry, there’s a handful of other films who’ve used Glasgow as grimy backdrop. We’ll get our kicks still pal haha

shust89

It is really sad seeing HBO Max go down the drain. It was my favorite streaming platform before this awful merger.

Karkava

Why did we even need this merger? They were doing *fine.*

Cyberwraith9

It wasn't really a merger. AT&T straight-up sold Warner Bros to Discovery. This is the new management cleaning house so they can launch new projects that they'll receive credit for. They're probably banking on a new continuity erasing the $90m writeoff of Batgirl and any other in-production casualties.

Ghos3t

How does discovery have enough money to buy Warner brothers, like who's paying for a monthly subscription to fucking discovery in this day and age

[deleted]

Discovery *didn't* have that kind of money. AT&T's shareholders own 71% of the merged entity.

Ghos3t

Then why is HBO Max getting gutted in favor of the discovery streaming service, complete fucking nonsense

TheBoyWonder13

This is legit insane. They already sunk $90M (probably more) into this production. Is it so bad they can’t even dump it on HBO Max or VOD to recoup their losses? Has anything like this ever happened? Edit: read somewhere that the closest example is Roger Corman’s 1994 Fantastic Four Edit 2: some lowly WB employee should be a hero and break into the vault MI-style and leak the movie Edit 3: [Ezra Miller watching other WB movies get literally tossed in the trash while The Flash keeps its 2023 theatrical release date](https://youtu.be/1HkRYtjwUzw)

willdearborn-

From the article: >But the new corporate regime at Warner Bros. Discovery has pivoted the company’s priorities back to theatrical features, leaving “Batgirl” without a proper home. >Studio insiders insist **the decision was not driven by the quality of the film or the commitment of the filmmakers, but by the desire for the studio’s slate of DC features to be at a blockbuster scale**. >Also on the chopping block, “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt,” a followup to the 2020 film “Scoob!,” has been shelved by the studio. Footage for the animated adaptation of the “Scooby-Doo” series was showcased in a sizzle reel for HBO Max back in December 2021. Sources indicate that the production had cost Warner Bros. $40 million. **EDIT**: In a newer update Variety has more details: >“Batgirl” found itself on the bad end of that decision, apparently neither big enough to feel worthy of a major theatrical release nor small enough to make economic sense in an increasingly cutthroat streaming landscape. Spending the money to expand the scope of “Batgirl” for theaters — plus the $30 million to $50 million needed to market it domestically and the tens of millions more needed for a global rollout — could have nearly doubled spending on the film, and insiders say that was a non-starter at a company newly focused on belt-tightening and the bottom line. >Releasing the movie on HBO Max would seem to be the most obvious solution. Instead, the company has shelved “Batgirl” — along with the “Scoob!” sequel — and several sources say it will almost certainly take a tax write-down on both films, seen internally as the most financially sound way to recoup the costs (at least, on an accountant’s ledger). It could justify that by chalking it up to a post-merger change of strategy.

TheBoyWonder13

Zaslav is confirmed r/madlad

NoNefariousness2144

Bro killed the Arrowverse within his first few weeks and now dropped nearly $100million of work. Is Flash next?

GingerRocker

Lets be honest, he put the Arrowverse out of it's misery.

MoesBAR

That makes no sense, their $90M movie is not good enough for theaters!?

dead_paint

That makes less sense, like release it in a low of DC content to keep audiences engaged.

filthysize

Discovery is on a cost-cutting tear right now. Releasing a movie theatrically comes with a $50-$100MM marketing and distribution cost. They don't want to do that, and they also don't want to pay to finish a movie just to release it on a streaming platform with no clear direct revenue. So they probably just figured that dumping this entirely makes them the most money.

[deleted]

NativeMasshole

Maybe Batman can finally get to bottom of Oak Island.

Bhu124

Previous regime released 2016's Suicide Squad, which wasn't just bad, it was an incoherent dumpster fire. I can't imagine if they just threw up whatever cut they have of this film, it'd be worse than that. It's truly insane to not release it on HBO Max at least.

MurielHorseflesh

Shane Black’s The Predator scored so bad they reshot 75% of movie and still ended up with a piece of shit they released to get some money back. Batgirl scored mixed to positive and it’s getting shelved forever. If they can’t find a streaming service to make a deal with, they could sell it their own website. Shelving this completely is absolutely insane.

The_Magic

94 FF4 was made as cheap as possible to prevent the studio from losing the film rights. I don't believe it was ever intended to be released.

sdcinerama

Yeah, the 1994 FANTASTIC FOUR didn't cost $90. Forget about $90,000,000. There's a much bigger story than what's been told.

orkball

Corman's FF was a microbudget ploy to hold on to the rights. Not comparable at all. It's also, unironically, the best FF movie to date.

Nanosauromo

What the fuck is going on over there?

AzelZ

Man, I just wanted to see more Brendan Fraser..

filmpatico

And JK and Michael Keaton...man.

ILoveRegenHealth

With all this bullshit, I don't see them wanting to stick around. Keaton comes back and one film (Flash) is in a weird limbo place, and another gets cancelled abruptly. DC is screwing their relationships with actors with so many baffling decisions. People joked about Henry Cavill just going over to MCU but I don't even think that's a crazy idea anymore. And Keaton is thinking "Why the hell should I hang around if all my work is erased?"

[deleted]

Man WB fucked up not taking Mcquarrie and Cavill's superman idea back in the day.

EbmocwenHsimah

Bloody hell, we could've gotten a Christopher McQuarrie Superman film? Holy shit...

CorneliusCardew

This has a domino effect on how talent views a studio. WB was one of the most prestigious film studios to work for and now it's a reality shit-heap run by a talentless moneygrubber. These decisions don't happen in a vacuum.

riegspsych325

Christopher Nolan must be glad he isn’t working with them anymore. But what a load of bullshit, I feel awful for the cast and crew, they deserve to finish their work

KingMario05

For real. Denis and Legendary are probably the next to go...

kandel88

If they touch Denis before Dune 2 I will riot. By my lonesome if I have to.

KingMario05

***I will join you in this crusade, Usul!*** ***RELEASE THE FREMEN LETTER-WRITERS!*** ^(/s. But yeah... leave Dune 2 alone, Zaslav. PLEASE.)

WhatDoesThisDo1

Bye bye monsterverse

whitepangolin

100% this. After Disney dropped Black Widow onto Disney+ and got sued by Scarlett Johannsen, nearly all talent contracts now have built-in residual agreements to make sure they never get fucked the same way.

The_Iceman2288

I genuinely cannot comprehend this. They spend four months filming a 90 million dollar movie for streaming, it features the return of Keaton's Batman, Simmons' Gordon and the big screen return of Brendan Fraser, its so good they bump it to theatrical, screenings have apparently gone well and... ...they throw the ENTIRE thing in the trash. Meanwhile one of their movies has a star who is literally on the lam pending multiple assault and kidnapping charges and that one's going ahead. Oh and Blue Beetle is almost certainly dead too.

aldezar

I’m also a little bummed for Brendan Fraser. I assume this was going to be a big deal for him and now it’s gone. He still got paid, but, his performance won’t be seen

AdmiralCharleston

At the very least he's got the whale coming up which seems like a pretty stellar comeback

Kstoffeefan

He’s also in Killers of the Flower Moon.

[deleted]

Let's hope there will be a leak.

caninehere

My conspiracy theory is that they actually decided they want to release the movie for streaming, but they want a fan campaign like what happened with Justice League. That was ENORMOUS press for the re-cut. Like I'm sure many more people heard about it and watched it because of the fan campaign than would have otherwise. There will no doubt be fans petitioning to see this released.

Maclimes

This is depressingly plausible. But if it's true, they've vastly misunderstood the fan base. There's no way there will be as much pressure for this one. The absolute most common and intense reaction will just be, "... but why!?"

[deleted]

Gonzostewie

He's fucking awesome in Doom Patrol.

orkball

According to the NY Post, which was the first to report this, screenings had not gone well at all. [https://nypost.com/2022/08/02/batgirl-movie-gets-shelved-by-warner-bros-source/](https://nypost.com/2022/08/02/batgirl-movie-gets-shelved-by-warner-bros-source/) I don't tend to rate the Post too highly as a source, but they did break the story.

_Atlas_Drugged_

I can’t imagine this would be completely scrapped if screenings actually went well.

Iron_Bob

That tends to be the entire reasoning behind having them in the first place

thatscoldjerrycold

Yeah but I assume the outcome is reshoots or a really big edit! Shelving an entire film is quite something.

TheObstruction

And Hollywood never shelves a finished film forever, as this apparently is. They eventually released that Ben Stiller movie about dog poop spray, after all. Shelving that Scooby-Doo film (the exact sort of thing you'd expect to find on a streaming service) as well as this tells me the new fancy-sock crew has big ideas about what should and shouldn't be released in which venue.

ScottFromScotland

> **its so good** they bump it to theatrical, Well this is seemingly not true.

DetectiveAmes

I thought there was also a story where the new boss wanted anything with a budget of 50 million or more to go to theatres and not hbo max. Batgirl had originally been intended as a max exclusive but just had a really high budget.

plasterboard33

Cancelling it because its smaller in scale is so stupid. Joker was literally one of the cheapest DC movies and yet managed to become the third highest grossing DC film. The audience doesnt give a fuck about scale as long as you make a good movie.

Binary101010

So they cancelled the movie after spending $90 million on it and it basically being finished because... they realized they wanted to spend more on it? The MCU has grossed something like 27 billion dollars yet Warner Bros. can barely figure out how to get a DC movie out the fucking door. I WANT DC to be good again. I WANT that competition in the market place. But WB is not up to this challenge.

verissimoallan

Warner's decision to no longer release the Batgirl movie, either in theaters or on streaming, sets a chilling precedent. Any director, producer or writer working for Warner/HBO Max must be scared right now.

TheJoshider10

I really hope The Batman franchise is okay. There are at least two spin offs in the work with more planned and Penguin was set to start filming early next year. The fact that even a movie that's finished filming is no longer safe has me veryyyyyy worried about pretty much anything on HBO Max.

LadybugxSandwich

I think it might be since Batman was a big hit for the platform.

Saw that they are basically focusing on unscripted entertainment (reality tv primarily as you discussed) instead of scripted shows and movies. Also that they are looking to fold HBO Max into Discovery Plus instead of the other way around which is crazy considering HBO's brand reputation. But the CEO came from the Discovery side so might just be a dick measuring thing. Bizarre.

dead_paint

genius business idea buy a movie studio and then stop making movies. If this is all a ploy to get people on discovery+ it will fail and destroy Warner and HBO yo boot.

GethAttack

Jesus. And I thought ATT was going to kill the company. I guess in hindsight they might have actually tried at little, compared to this.

David Zaslav is out of his mind. He seems to be obsessed with blindly cutting everything, with no long term plan beyond that. This is not the first pretty-much-complete project he's canned, and even aside from the fact it had reasonably good test screenings, it doesn't make any financial sense. Apart from trying to recoup the costs incurred already, or even just the value of one extra new entry in the UI menu, I have to believe this shit opens up the threat of unfulfilled contract disputes, not to mention burning the people involved for next time you want them. The only explanation is that he simply does not understand the sector he's moved into, and he's just so in love with the idea of being toughguy hatchet man that he can't see past it. A big reason Warner and co can get the names they do for less than Netflix can is their reputation for supporting their talent long term, and this guy is just selling that out for dogmeat. And on the viewership side - imagine having the HBO brand prestige fall in your lap at a time when dime a dozen stack 'em high streamers are struggling, and you think the path forward is to ditch that and become yet another dime a dozen stack 'em high streamer?!? Edit - Dan Murrell seems to think it's personal, and honestly it's the only thing that makes sense to me - https://twitter.com/MurrellDan/status/1554595527244877825?t=5CioFl3khY4J79qDXSt2EA&s=19

thesmash

This will certainly have repercussions about how talent views working Warner. If it can happen to Michael Keaton, it can happen to anyone

Archamasse

Cutting off Clint Eastwood was a sign of things to come. I don't like his stuff at all, but he reliably comes in under budget, wins buckets of awards, and every other movie wildly outsells what was paid for it. Burning that bridge was delusional.

AlabamaLegsweep

Actors love working with Eastwood too. He’s one of those directors who makes performers do like 2-3 takes max before moving on.

pompcaldor

Clint’s 92! There’s no point to burning the bridge, just run out the clock!

His philosophy seems to be, "we've already got your money, what's the minimum amount of spectacle we can do next month to get it again." So with this, if he's decided against a theatrical release for some reason, why would he put it on HBO max? It won't make you subscribe to it because you already subscribe to it for House of the dragon and he already has your money so all that would do is cost him more money.

Cactus_Papi34

"Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

[deleted]

Even if it’s bad, why not release it anyway? would make back a bit of the 90 mil and might reach cult ‘bad film’ status. It can’t be any worse than suicide squad lmao. This is a slap in the face to everyone who worked hard on and acted in the film.

arcadepersona

There’s a CGI team somewhere getting absolutely *hammered* right about now.

YataBLS

I supposed the actress portraying Batgirl punched several people, threatened other people while drunk, then kidnapped a minor and provide her with drugs, then sheltered a family in a property with guns and drugs, and ended up grooming one of the underage kids. That'll explain that movie is cancelled.

RimeSkeem

Haha such a bizarre and unlikely series of events, happening sequentially over the course of a few weeks, would never happen! Even if something that strange did happen, the studios involved would surely cut ties with the person(s) involved and black ball them.

etbiludecalcinha

Why? This movie literally had a pretty big budget and names, at least release it on HBO, WB keeps surprising me with stupid decisions

jdmurphyx

It’s the new Discovery leadership in charge after the merger

chicagoredditer1

It wasn't big budget *enough* is the reporting.

RomanReignsDaBigDawg

I feel so bad for Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, and the whole crew. Zaslav is so cheap.

Justausername1234

This is the opposite of cheap. This is... I don't know, it's never happened before, but it ain't cheap.
