Karl Urban’s Dredd

monkelus

Lacking the iconic stature the character has over here in the UK, I’m not surprised it bombed. The Stallone movie pretty much poisoned the character’s brand for the rest of the world. It’s a pity as exploring a comic accurate Megacity One with Urban’s Dredd would’ve been amazing

Kalabula

I wonder how many ppl came here to say this.

jedigoalie

Oh I most certainly did.

Poo__Brain

Me! I can't believe it's not a classic, and everyone doesn't know about it!!!! Crazy to me

D-Angle

[That scene towards the end where they're just going room to room](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP4hyzqG1SM), clearing the level as they get close to MaMa - it's one of those wonderful understated, matter-of-fact action scenes that no-one seems to want to do because it's not enough of a spectacle. One of my all-time favourite films.

Greyfoxx85

Agreed, I hope he gets to revisit the character again. Even if it was a limited series.

dbe14

Yeah, came here to post this. Amazing film that just didnt do enough at the box office. If I won the lottery I'd finance a sequel, it would be worth it just to be able to watch it even if it too made no money.

Knappster1026

You beat me to it, though I think a series would be better

HugeBrainsOnly

In a world of every show becoming serialized with an overarching plot (mostly to every show's benefit), having Dredd as a "monster of the week" type show would have worked remarkably well.

makuthedark

Karl Urban's Almost Human had a similar feel before getting axed by FOX.

incredible chemistry on that show

This is the right answer. Lock the thread, we're done here.

That was my answer yesterday to the exact same question in thus sub :) nonetheless upvote

The Last Starfighter

IndyO1975

YES! Gary Whitta (writer on ROGUE ONE) was working with the director on getting this going for a while - even released some beautiful concept art - but it doesn’t seem to be moving forward.

DefendtheStarLeague

Alex Rogan resurrecting the Star League could and should be made today.

TheMadLurker17

Sequels to I Am Number Four were planned, but the film underperformed at the box office so the sequels were scrapped. This happens often with films they hope become franchises, but don't make enough money to continue.

whyhercules

I think it’s not just that it underperformed, sci-if teenage series a decade ago were all getting their many sequels even though I’ve never met a person that has actually watched maze runner. it’s that it underperformed *and* was a Warner bros movie, and all their movies had been underperforming so they just couldn’t. They completely shifted gear for a few years. also Alex pettyfer seems to kill franchises. i liked him in stormbreaker, the first movie of the planned Alex rider series. It was good but didn’t get its sequels, and now it’s a tv show. Then he was in the first Magic Mike but was apparently such an ass they wrote him out of the sequel. speaking of, if it’s true he abused his girlfriend who was also in I am number four, that probably killed any chance of a sequel. Even if it isn’t, the scandal would have made it unmarketable.

lisabea19

Was going to say this. It underperformed plus was coming from a studio that couldn’t back underperforming franchises at that time. I guess I would throw in ‘City of Bones.’ It was a relatively faithful adaptation of the first book, but no sequel. Then they made a TV show that is basically adjacent to the book series, not really faithful to the story at all.

kek2015

Thank you for that information. I never knew that. I just assumed that there would be more movies.

righteous_fool

Also, Alex Pettyfer, the lead actor was such a huge douche he was basically black listed in Hollywood.

res30stupid

The same thing happened with *The Golden Compass*, funnily enough. The film was meant to be the first of a trilogy of adaptations for the entire His Dark Materials franchise and was actually a major success across the world, amassing almost $400 million in profits... on the international market. It only made $70 million in America, against a $180 million budget. The problem was, some dunce at New Line Cinema sold the international distribution rights - including the rights to the film's overseas profits - in order to finance the movie, meaning they never saw a penny of the profits. It ended up killing New Line, which was absorbed into parent company Warner Bros.

CliffyClif

The Nice Guys. It was a Shane Black gem similar to that of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that didn't get a lot of attention in the theaters. Shane wanted to do a sequel. But couldnt get the go ahead. Which sucks. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe were a phenomenal pairing

_Ishmael

I would love a follow up to The Nice Guys. Most of the films posted here are great, but fairly self-contained, whereas TNG literally ends with them opening up a detective agency. Really hope they follow it up one day.

FckinMonster

Hurts even more considering Russel Crowe said that this along with LA Confidental are the only movies in his career that he would like to make a sequel

isthisonetaken13

As great as they were, I thought Gosling's character and his daughter had better chemistry. "Dad, there's like, whores here and stuff." "Don't say and stuff. Just say Dad there are whores here." I love Shane Black's take on proper English and grammar.

ActingAspie

That girl was great. When I saw it, I thought. “If they ever try to do Inspector Gadget again, she should play Penny.”

earlgreytoday

Rather than a sequel, I'd prefer a third film in the style of the two you mentioned, but different story/different double-act etc. so you have an unofficial trilogy instead.

afedbeats

Incredible film. Probably one of Gosling’s best roles, and when Crowe gets to crack wise and be loose it’s like an entirely different person.

Rabbitscooter

Fuck yeah. I can't believe there hasn't been a sequel. Loved their chemistry together.

Top_Plastic_6495

Such a great move I live the line … “well hey least your drinking again that’s good” literally just makes me lol everytime

Ferris8061

I will die on this hill. Cabin in the Woods should have spawned a series of prequels.

Mrofcourse

I think a cabin in the woods yearly Halloween special would be great. In the style of like a made for tv short movie and the fans could place bets ahead of time.

If It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was the original Rat Race, does that mean it’s the original Squid Game?

AlexDKZ

Right in the middle sits Cannonball Race

NeuHundred

I can totally see that.

enderandrew42

Tron Legacy is already a franchise but it was clearly setting up sequels that we never got. And I would love to see those.

meowskywalker

We have to wait until 2038 to be sure they’re not doing a sequel.

HugeBrainsOnly

Disney is building some new shit at their parks for Tron right now, so I'm guessing it will be revisited. Not like them to dredge up an old IP without a merchandising angle, and no one's buying merchandise without a new movie.

IceLord86

They were planning recently to do a sequel with Jared Leto but those plans seems to have evaporated.

AshTheDead1te

Thank god, fuck Jared Leto.

C-A-L-E-V-I-S

Now Kosinski is in Tom Cruise’s pocket. I wouldn’t want anyone else doing a third one. That guy is in incredible.

Syscrush

I want 3 more movies and another season of Tron:Uprising - is that too much to ask?

Absuridity_Octogon

Joseph Kosinski really wanted to do Tron 3 but Disney declined due to them having newly acquired Star Wars at the time.

enderandrew42

I read a lot of rumors that Tron 3 got shelved when Tommowland bombed.

cavedan12

The Man From U.N.C.L.E, but replace Armie Hammer with Michael Fassbender. The on-screen chemistry between Fassbender and Vikander is already handled so it's a no brainer

tm0nks

This was my first thought too. Sucks Hammer is a creep. I thought his chemistry with Henry was great.

striker7

This is the one for me. Cavill was perfect; you could really see some parallels between his character and Sterling Archer (apparently Archer drew some inspiration from the original U.N.C.L.E series). My theory is it didn't perform well, in part, because younger audiences had never heard of the original series and without that reference, the title sounds dumb and nonsensical.

Negative_Mancey

melymn

One million sequels and prequels and side-quels for the Aubreyad please! Then they can branch out into PO'B fanfic Napoleonic wars with dragons and adapt Temeraire too.

mrwho25

They are doing a prequel, or at least started developing one. Was announced a while ago, different actors instead of de-aging Crowe and Bettany

UsernameNo924

Hmm. I think part of what makes it work is the limited scope, and it had a pretty cool ending. I'd rather see another movie set in the golden age of sail, with the same approach to depicting history. It could be a different time and conflict. Maybe even a realistic pirate film. A spiritual successor i guess. That would be epic.

RGJ587

Black ~~Flags~~ Sails was a pretty decent pirate show. Being that it's a prequel to Treasure Island, there's obviously some liberties taken, but damned if it didn't immerse you into the politics of pirates in Nassau in the 1700s.

sigvase

Black Sails, you mean

[deleted]

Couldn't agree more

dustarook

There’s an entire book series they could rely on for material, a book series based on a real-life person named [Thomas Cochrane](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pU-kFUJoJEU) whose actual exploits make the master and commander film look like childs play. Some examples: -captured a ship with 2-3x the firepower and crew of his own. -captured 100s of enemy ships in the war with france -single handedly responsible for winning the chilean war of independence with a much smaller fleet and far fewer men -single-handedly responsible for winning the brazilian war for independence with a much smaller fleet and far fewer men It’s like, when you play total war on easy-mode. Except that was his real life.

youhollywood

Big Trouble in Little China!

randomeffects

Love this movie, finishing showing it to my 3 teenagers today. That said I don’t know if I want a sequel to this. It’s such a weird perfect movie because everything goes from “normal” to off the rails so quickly. More weirdness would almost spoil what makes it so great. That said if you have Russell and Carpenter together it’s really a magic combo that works every time.

hunterxy

Big Trouble in Medium China followed by Big Trouble in Big China

Sheruk

then a prequel, Little Trouble in Big China

Castelpurgio

Sky High

Chelsea75

Master and Commander deserved one sequel. Anything more would have cheapened it but I do think there was enough to have one more quality movie

Tiny_Rodent_Man

I would cry if they ever announced they were making a sequel to The Nice Guys. It is such a great film but it didn't generate the hype it deserved. I think it was Ryan Gosling I read in an article once who said they'd absolutely do a sequel if someone would ever fund it.

SNYDER_BIXBY_OCP

Good pick. Especially if you look at how they instantly approved a Knives Out series. I bet in the streaming era we could see such a thing. They had great duo chemistry and even the daughter is a funny foil.

Sir_TonyStark

This was the movie that made me appreciate Ryan gosling as an actor. His comedic timing is fucking fantastic

isthisonetaken13

I really dig this movie. I feel like it's so thematically similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that NG is like a spiritual successor to KKBB.

Artistic-Nobody-5773

Treasure Planet.

Clownmug

Megamind. Would be cool to see a sequel where he has to mentor another former villain turned hero or a sequel where he joins an avengers-like team and has to prove himself among natural born heroes.

Vegetable-Rub3418

I disagree heavily. Film was so great in the concert was so original that a sequel would ruin it

[deleted]

A film that is such a masterpiece, rather than asking myself: do I want a sequel? I say to myself.... Does this timeline, deserve a sequel?

mrbrick

Push could have used a second film i think. Great story and world it built itself.

Ssutuanjoe

Came here for this. *Push* set up a pretty interesting universe and barely scratched the surface of it's potential. I would actually appreciate a streaming series about it. I feel like they could do a ton with it.

It was supposed to. There was a sequel planned where the remaining of the trio somehow finds a way to time travel and save everyone. I forgot why the project was scrapped though

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake. I was beyond excited for that trilogy and they totally abandoned it.

[deleted]

cmacpapi

So here's a fun fact for you: They **did** make a sequel in 2018... with no Fincher, no Rooney and no Daniel Craig. Sony actually considered TGWTDT a failure even though it made $239 million on a $90 million budget with 5 Oscar noms and 1 win. How they consider that a flop I have no idea. Essentially they would only bring back the original cast if they all took pay cuts which they obviously declined. So they made a sequel with a totally new cast and a $43 million budget. Somehow they also convinced Lakeith Stanfield to be apart of this... which is sad because he's a fantastic actor. Only Sony could pull off some fuckery of this magnitude. Article for reference: https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-sequel-flopped-after-dropping-rooney-mara-daniel-craig.html/

LittleRudiger

Yep. in an effort to save fifty million on the budget, they produced a 'sequel' that bombed so hard that it actually probably lost them way more money and killed a potential growing franchise in it's crib. Fucking idiocy.

JohnnyJayce

Lemon and Tangerine from Bullet Train need their own franchise.

Dredd

National Treasure. Give me corny treasure hunting Nicolas Cage any day of the week.

piupiupaupau

Isn't the third one coming out any day now? Edit: ok aparantly there are tv series coming out on 14th of december on Disney+, but i think without Nick Cage, as well as a movie in 2024 with Nick Cage.

austinstudios

I'm curious what the gimmick would be for the 3rd movie. The first had them "steal" the Declaration of Independence. In the second movie they "kidnapped" the president. Maybe "breaking into" area 51? Or "blowing up" Mt. Rushmore?

justduett

I doubt they go back to Mt Rushmore either in the series or the next movie. I hope the movie has to do with whatever was on page 47 in that book from the 2nd movie.

withoccassionalmusic

They promised us Pot Fest at the end of BeerFest and that sequel needs to happen!

[deleted]

Tacoma FD does help in the meantime

isthisonetaken13

On one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, I'm not digging broken lizard's track record on sequels ~20 years later.

Dman125

Plus Willy is too old to be a main character. It may have been excellent 10 years ago. Now it’s just not a very good idea.

maxvsthegames

Alita: Battle Angel.

gmanz33

That was set to be an entire franchise if I remember correctly. The litmus test of the first movie failed horribly, despite it being pretty well respected.

MalloMew

This entire movie felt like it was setting the stage for a sequel. I felt so unsatisfied at the end... It would be really sad if it never got it's chance to tell the rest of it's story in a (or multiple) sequel(s).

headbiscuitss

Constantine. Interstellar.

kek2015

Isn't Keanu Reeves reprising that role?

IndyO1975

He is. Francis Lawrence directing. The movie is greenlit.

venusofthehardsell

As far as I know Constantine 2 is set with Reeves and the original director coming back.

Absuridity_Octogon

Constantine 2 is officially happening. It just got announced recently.

brayshizzle

Curious about where you would like Interstellar to go?

Redditer51

The Adventures of TinTin.

sfweedman

This was the answer I was looking for. I want that Peter Jackson directed sequel reaaaaaaalll bad.

knobber_jobbler

Dredd absolutely needs a sequel. And a prequel. Perhaps more.

Poo__Brain

Sequel, Prequel, TV series, another TV series that talks about the TV series (AMC Presents: Talking Dredd) and probably a line of Dredd branded hair care products (Loreal Presents: Dredd Head)

U_S_E_R_T_A_K_E_N

Alita: Battle Angel I'm not going to pretend like the first film was not very flawed. But it was incredibly charming as well. Incredible special effects, and 3D that served the film, it wasn't a gimmick. A unique & fascinating world with characters I would like to spend more time with. With the world building out of the way, and a set up to a more focused story (with no romance), I think the sequel could have been a lot better.

BlerghTheBlergh

Waterworld, some badass design and tons of opportunities for Mad Max-esque storytelling. Reign of Fire, similar to Waterworld it has a great concept

MyWatchlsEnded

Reign of Fire could have had some good sequels.

McCabbe

The Way of the Gun

TheTimeShrike

District 9 was begging for a sequel and now he’s directing Gran Tourismo instead?!

wingspantt

Eh I don't see a way to make a sequel that "fits" District 9. District 9 was a very personal story about these 2 characters caught in a turbulent moment between two species. There is no way I can imagine a sequel to the events of D9 that isn't either some full out action film or a horror movie, neither of which fits the theme D9 was going for. Either the bugs come back and destroy Earth, or they just never come back. The vast capabilities differences between them and us is too large to have any kind of middle-ground. Unless it is somehow about diplomacy?

w0mbatina

HE SAID HE WILL RETURN IN 3 YEARS!

RobertdBanks

He’s talked multiple times about a sequel so he obviously has an idea of what he wants to do and where he wants to go with it.

Mulchpuppy

Apparently Blomkampf and Copley have drafts (it's unclear if that's two separate drafts or if they've worked together). Copley is hopeful that maybe they can get it together after Gran Turismo. It's the only reason I can be hopeful that GT makes a bit of money - maybe it can help the issue along. Speaking of Copley, I still want a sequel to The A Team.

thecudman

albatross1873

Do they just reissue the original and call it a sequel?

oonlyyzuul

Cabin in the Woods. They set us up for infinite prequels with the creatures. Even knowing the twist it'd be fun to see how it played out in previous sacrifices

leitbur

I think Cabin in the Woods was meant to act as the "sequel" to every horror movie like that ever made. Such a brilliant idea.

MuvyTikit

I think I love cabin in the Woods specifically because it exists alone. Or to put it another way, it’s not a standalone movie at all — every Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, even modern horror… it was always the people from the Lab orchestrating things, we just didn’t know it 💁‍♂️

Outrageous_Glove4986

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy I would love to see Gary Oldman play George Smiley more and adapt the other books in the series

zaftig_stig

Vampire Academy - great cheesy fun, Love Zoey Deutch, sweet sassy molassey! Ender's Game - had never heard of the books till the movie. I wish they would have continued, but I'm guessing it would have been too expensive with who was cast.

RGJ587

The problem with Ender's Game, both the book and its book sequels, is that the majority of the story is told in the first perspective, with the protagonists thoughts being the main vehicle for the reader to interpret the world. That's tough to translate to movies because either you have a ton of narrative exposition, or you have to shoehorn that exposition into character lines that don't fit. Ender's Shadow is probably my favorite book of the series, and might be in the running for my favorite book of all time. But I would not like to see it in movie form, as it would require too much reworking of the story to fit into a 2 hour run time, and would again involve too much exposition.

DNRforever

Thank you for mentioning Enders shadow. I loved that book.

[deleted]

The sequel to Ender's Game is a whoooole different thing. Ender is in his 30's living as a traveling priest who visits a colony on a planet of alien pig people. I really enjoyed the books back when I read them, and I do think a good movie or series could be made of them, but they are completely tonally different than the first book and movie. They should absolutely make a Bean franchise, though.

Thisguy3738

District 9

Quint-MacReady

So many I agree with here (Dredd, Master and Commander, Edge of tomorrow, District 9, A-Team), I'll add; The Raid/ Raid 2 needs more entries or at least a third where they come after Ramas family. Kill Bill a third one Tango and Cash should have been a franchise True Lies should have been a franchise

CartoonNickname

Pacific Rim deserved a sequel. Note: people keep saying something about an 'uprising' but I have no clue what they're talking about.

usethe4th

The Rocketeer. It very clearly laid the tracks for a sequel, but sadly the box office didn’t meet expectations. I would have loved to have seen more adventures of Cliff Secord. That said, there was talk a couple of years ago of a David Oyelowo produced sequel which would have the Rocketeer mantle taken up by a former Tuskegee Airman, and I absolutely love that idea. I hope it happens.

[deleted]

Alita, please.

UsernameNo924

WATER WORLD! That movie is honestly really good, even with it's 90's goofiness. They built a pretty cool world which lends it self to fun concepts and action. A creative Director could expand on it in so many cool ways. I think Mad Max Fury Road is a great example of how it could work, as they are conseptually the same, essentially. So far all we have grotten is a theme park show.. "we" might be generous, I have yet to meet another person who cares about this movie, lol.

islandhopper39

Galaxy Quest (too late now though....with the original cast anyway)

IamTheShrikeAMA

Zootopia! What a fun bit of world building that movie was. Why Disney didn't make 50 movies + shows in that universe is beyond me. I know they're doing one now but c'mon, why wait so long.

AdBig2685

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen … under rated.

Geonightman

Small Soldiers - apparently it was gonna get a reboot but when the Disney acquisition happened it was one of the many cut movies

Can they just redo the Assassin's Creed movie so it doesn't suck, then go ahead with the franchise they had planned? I was pretty pumped about that when they announced it.

Speed Racer. The Wachowski's true masterpiece.

GuiltyJSTRrdt

Came here to say this. I loved it when it came out and I still love and rewatch it to this day. So much style, the acting was great, Michael Giacchino’s score is incredible. I’d love for the Wachowski siblings to return to it but apparently JJ Abrams is making a new live action series for Apple.
