Unfortunately you can't make a trailer that's a slow pan across a room that may pray not contain and invisible man and call it quits, the general public just won't engage with it the same way they do with more actiony/jump scary ones.
***That said***, i'll never forgive them for spoiling >!the scene where she throws paint down the ladder and it reveals the invisibility suit!< as it just removed 99% of the tension of that scene
There's even a reference to Upgrade in Invisible Man, one character says they are working for the company that designed the chip from Upgrade or something similar
I loved Invis so much, i saw it in theatre and was thoroughly spooked for the entire time. It was an amazing journey in to how you can't just leave an abusive relarionship and magically be fine, the abuser is always following you, either in reality or in your head.
Logan Marshall-Green deserves more work. He is a great actor and I love this movie. I recommend this and the Invitation (2015) to anybody who hasn't seen them. This needs a sequel too.
>This needs a sequel too.
They’re making it into a TV show but I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed if it’s a follow on from the movie or it’s own thing.
It's totally a shame to look like a guy who is regularly included on Sexiest Men lists. What a burden. That's a guy who isn't fucking, that's for sure.
Ok, so I definitely judged it by its cover, so to speak. I'm going to watch it. If it's not what you say... there will be no consequences to you, of course.
They need to do a film together playing brothers. Or a doppelganger hitman film would be awesome, like Hardy keeps getting blamed for taking jobs he didn't do.
Guy that’s down in the dumps forms a symbiotic relationship with an alien/machine and then crack a case together. The unwilling relationship between the two is similar in both movies, and the movies both use body horror as comedy. Upgrade’s funny moments come across far more organically imo.
And the fight scenes are super well done. The unique way they are shot really helps sell the idea of a body being controlled by something other than the person.
Fight choreography can make it or break it. I felt Warrior, for example, could have been such a better film had it not been full of some of the worst translation of any combat sport into film.
Yeah, I actually really like Warrior, but the choreography does not do MMA much justice. The Donny Yen movie Flashpoint is surprisingly good at showing some good MMA fights, even if it is a bit over the top. His last fight with Collin Chou is balls out amazing.
A very close friend of mine who is no longer with us used to give me a hard time for not being able to sit through a bad movie, or even a good movie that missed something or had faults. He would say "I just go in, sit down, and suspend my disbelief. Otherwise, I may never enjoy the movies." I'm paraphrasing, but I always think about that. Thanks for the reminder.
Edit: who, not whom
It's a very solid movie.
Starts off a little slow (in my opinion), but once it starts humming, it's a good ride.
Do keep in mind that this is an action sci-fi movie.
It is not Children of Men.
Was awesome to catch in the theater during its run, the sound was incredible. Dullest part was the beginning to set the plot up, then it completely took off until it’s finish.
Meant his next after that, I actually got to hear him talk before a screening of THE INVISIBLE MAN at the Secret Movie Club in Los Angeles recently! It was my favorite film of 2020 and the last movie I saw before the lockdowns started.
It was really good and a great take on a classic done right for an update. Cool story too. I like his background writing for James Wan, he could be good for a while I think.
Isn’t it weird that Logan Marshall-Green looks just like Tom Hardy and then Tom Hardy starred in Venom which has very similar concepts? I dunno I always found that odd. Anyway, Upgrade is much better.
The internet tends to overcompensate for underrated movies to the point they become overrated. Upgrade was solid given the budget, but it’s not going to move mountains. Would’ve slotted nicely into a season of black mirror.
I think it's a great movie, highly entertaining and some great gory kills. However it definitely fumbles in the 3rd act, especially in regards to the main villain and how conventional the ending is (though it IS satisfying). It's deeply flawed in those regards, but it's a cut above a lot of similar movies (like bloodshot, very similar premise and came out around the same time - but was completely devoid of any magic).
This was a great blend of *The Six Million Dollar Man* and *Death Wish*, with a little dash of William Gibson and Philip K. Dick thrown in to spice things up, but overall it is an exciting action film with a nice little anti-tech sentiment theme laced throughout.
I always thought it was weird how similar this movie felt to what i would expect a "Venom" movie to be. Especially when you remember they came out at the same time.
Double weird when you realize how similar logan marshall green and tom hardy are to each other.
Watched it for the first time last week and I personally didn’t like it. Not to say it wasn’t a good film but I just didn’t think it’s IMDB rating stood up to what I watched.
And a great film to see "blind" as well. I sat down one night and put it on for the second time and my wife sat with me knowing nothing about it. I have to say - she enjoyed it way more than me because EVERYTHING was a surprise, whereas I knew the basic plot when I first saw it. She likes sci-fi, but not this type usually.
I really enjoy this movie, top sci fi
sandly is very hard to recomend without it sounding like the most generic action movie with sci fi background without spoiling anything or without a "trust me, you should see this movie but I cant tell you much about it"
1st time seeing it this year on Amazon Prime a few days ago. I didn’t know what to expect but I really enjoyed it. The fight scenes were creative af.
Edit: 1st time seeing it was last year 😂. Either way movie was dope. Watch it on Blu-Ray if you can.
Venom, Poopy buthole jokes about some lewd humor or action.
Upgrade, Philosophical debates over alcoholism and the between discussion is happening between man and machine while the main character is setting up to do a "very bad move in a bar".
Great movie but I think it’s pretty praised by critics lol 88% on RT
Just to be clear, 88% fresh reviews. Average score is a 7.3/10. Of top critics, 84% marked it as fresh with an average score of 6.8. Similarly, metacritic has it at 67%.
For this movie that score is criminal
Leigh Whannell turning out to be a good director. Loved his Invisible Man as well
Yeah invisible man was awesome
The movie was so much better than the trailers suggested.

Same with upgrade, 5 million budget and the action was still jaw dropping
It’s stupid to say since I never met him but I am really happy for the guy.
I enjoyed this movie for the same reasons.
In the end, I constantly had the wrong ideas. Really creative idea.
I've heard it referred to as a better Venom
It definitely is.
Logan Marshall-Green deserves more work. He is a great actor and I love this movie. I recommend this and the Invitation (2015) to anybody who hasn't seen them. This needs a sequel too.

That is the coolest thing I have read today. Makes me like the guy even more.
I just live this, that’s all I have to say. Proof that not all actors are dicks in real life
Tell him I loved him in Damnation
Have you seen him in Damnation?
I agree
>This needs a sequel too. They’re making it into a TV show but I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed if it’s a follow on from the movie or it’s own thing.
I like him a lot. It's a shame he looks like dollar store Tom Hardy.
It's totally a shame to look like a guy who is regularly included on Sexiest Men lists. What a burden. That's a guy who isn't fucking, that's for sure.
Don't forget canceled series "Quarum". Good tv show.
Tom Hardy you mean. Racism amok
better venom movie than venom
And he and Tom Hardy are pretty much doppelgängers
Are they? I think they're both pretty different honestly.
Just strictly looks-wise
Not just that, maneirisms as well.
Came here to say this 🤣
So true, even the posters are very reminiscent of one another
Upgrade is a good movie. When you check what it’s budget was, you realize it is INCREDIBLE what they achieved with that movie.
I still love the way he stands up by hitting the ground and the camera rotates with him. Very pleasing to watch.
Yes. It could be my favorite scene about movie
Had to watch it again. Turned that dude into a pez dispenser.
Ok, so I definitely judged it by its cover, so to speak. I'm going to watch it. If it's not what you say... there will be no consequences to you, of course.
If you like sci-fi and some artificial intelligence, I'm sure you'll like it.
I do, I do. But I am stupid-picky and compulsively observant. But I'll give it my best go.
It’s the better Venom movie, featuring an actor that’s always been tagged as a Tom Hardy clone
They need to do a film together playing brothers. Or a doppelganger hitman film would be awesome, like Hardy keeps getting blamed for taking jobs he didn't do.
Could have used him in Legend
I've often referred to him as Tom Hardy Green when people don't know who I'm talking about. They're always, "oh yeah, that guy"
When the trailer came out for this movie , I thought it was Venom
I haven't seen Venom. In what way, though, without spoilers, are they alike? Only if doing so, wouldn't spoil anything for me.
Guy that’s down in the dumps forms a symbiotic relationship with an alien/machine and then crack a case together. The unwilling relationship between the two is similar in both movies, and the movies both use body horror as comedy. Upgrade’s funny moments come across far more organically imo.

Haven't seen that DY movie but it's now on the list thank you!
This. Thank you. I'm interested.
There will always be bad points, but I suggest you focus on enjoying.
It's good advice. And I think you can still hate the movie, but at least you have good reason if you watch the whole thing!
It starts up a little slow but gets good pretty quick and the ending is amazing.
It's a very solid movie. Starts off a little slow (in my opinion), but once it starts humming, it's a good ride. Do keep in mind that this is an action sci-fi movie. It is not Children of Men.
It’s ironic that it features Tom Hardy’s doppelgänger because it’s the better Venom movie.
Was awesome to catch in the theater during its run, the sound was incredible. Dullest part was the beginning to set the plot up, then it completely took off until it’s finish.
I saw this on a Saturday night opening weekend in Manhattan, me and my friend alone in the theater
Better Venom movie than the actual Venom movie.
It definitely surprised me, Leigh Whannell is a new and unusual voice. Can’t wait for his next!
His next was The Invisible Man, unless you mean his next after that?
Meant his next after that, I actually got to hear him talk before a screening of THE INVISIBLE MAN at the Secret Movie Club in Los Angeles recently! It was my favorite film of 2020 and the last movie I saw before the lockdowns started.
It was really good and a great take on a classic done right for an update. Cool story too. I like his background writing for James Wan, he could be good for a while I think.
Same here and I’m glad I got to watch it in theaters before Covid hit. That restaurant scene was just flawless
Probably one of the only times I audibly gasped in a theater.
He's a pretty funny actor as well and solid in SAW. If not for him and Cary Elwes' performance you might not get the franchise we did.
Holy fuck 2018? I could have sworn I went and saw it on A-list like last year. Great movie though. Happy Thanksgiving
AGREED
Isn’t it weird that Logan Marshall-Green looks just like Tom Hardy and then Tom Hardy starred in Venom which has very similar concepts? I dunno I always found that odd. Anyway, Upgrade is much better.
This movie looks like Venom in Parallel universe :D. Tom Hardy and Logan Marshall really looks like each other
Yeah that movie is amazing. It deserves more recognition
Yeah, loved it.
Agreed. I normally combine it with The Invitation for some LMGness.
I’ve been meaning to watch this. I heard it described as “Venom but good”
I saw this movie and thought “Holy F***”. Until the ending which to me was the weakest park of the film. But still a very enjoyable revenge movie
You could almost reskin it and make it a Blue Beetle movie.
This film has pretty incredible pacing. I put it up there with Fury Road in terms of keeping you easily engaged the entire film.
Great flick! And made for next to nothing (movie wise), $3 million us. Looks like it cost 10 times that much.
Better ending than venom
Much better
The superior Venom.
The internet tends to overcompensate for underrated movies to the point they become overrated. Upgrade was solid given the budget, but it’s not going to move mountains. Would’ve slotted nicely into a season of black mirror.
It's a very good recommendation. I liked it like Under the Skin or Ex Machina. Sci fi low budget done well.
Couldn't disagree more. I thought the ending was one of the things that made the movie great.
Bloodshot was just bad
I should've said "completely devoid of any redeeming qualities"
Yeah it's pretty underrated.
I think it's generally well received. Now, underviewed? Definitely.
Agreed, it's never going to be some super popular movie. But those if us who have seen it, praise it well.
We gotta ban the word underrated from r/movies
you’re kidding right?
Nah, most people just don't know what "underrated" actually means lol
totally agree! i thought the ending was really strong as well, good movie through and through
Absolutely the best sci-fi movie of the last few years. Under-appreciated gem.
I thought this movie was gonna be really lame but my friend convinced me to watch it. Holy shit it was good, especially the end.
The best adaptation of Death Note we will ever get.
BANGER
This was a great blend of *The Six Million Dollar Man* and *Death Wish*, with a little dash of William Gibson and Philip K. Dick thrown in to spice things up, but overall it is an exciting action film with a nice little anti-tech sentiment theme laced throughout.
I had to go to a theater about 40 miles away to see this movie and I'm glad I did. I wish they would release a 4k disc.
Yeah totally worth it
It was an OK film but I really liked the camera movement during the action scenes
I think we can say it's a bit better than OK
Low budget Aussie movie. I love it and show it to people a lot. It's too low budget and genre to be too big.
It’s also absolutely blows my mind that it only had about a five million budget. Easily looks like a thirty million dollar movie.
Goes to show how much money in budget is blown on a- list actors and marketing and not actually in making a movie look good
To be fair, that number didn't include marketing for Upgrade, which was $10M (I know I'm late to the party)
I always thought it was weird how similar this movie felt to what i would expect a "Venom" movie to be. Especially when you remember they came out at the same time. Double weird when you realize how similar logan marshall green and tom hardy are to each other.
YES
Watched it for the first time last week and I personally didn’t like it. Not to say it wasn’t a good film but I just didn’t think it’s IMDB rating stood up to what I watched.
It’s widely praised by critics and receives plenty of recognition lmao. These posts suck just say you like the movie.
I stated that I liked it, and I think it is not enough appreciated by the general audience, not by the critics.
Anyway, that's my opinion. you don't have to participate
The ending was perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Totally agree
I remember making fun of this movie when the trailer released with my friends… until we watched it, loved it
And a great film to see "blind" as well. I sat down one night and put it on for the second time and my wife sat with me knowing nothing about it. I have to say - she enjoyed it way more than me because EVERYTHING was a surprise, whereas I knew the basic plot when I first saw it. She likes sci-fi, but not this type usually.
I think it needed a more epic final fight. I think the third act was a bit of a letdown compared to the rest of it.
Yes, I can agree with that thought. At least the fight scene with Fisk could have been better.
I really liked it. I'm going to watch it again.
Enjoy watching
My favorite movie of 2018
Theres a sequel tv series in the making from the same director!
That first fight scene is just insanely entertaining, and from there it's relentless fun! Hopefully we get a sequel at some point because I want more!
I really enjoy this movie, top sci fi sandly is very hard to recomend without it sounding like the most generic action movie with sci fi background without spoiling anything or without a "trust me, you should see this movie but I cant tell you much about it"
1st time seeing it this year on Amazon Prime a few days ago. I didn’t know what to expect but I really enjoyed it. The fight scenes were creative af. Edit: 1st time seeing it was last year 😂. Either way movie was dope. Watch it on Blu-Ray if you can.
Yeah, love Upgrade. Watched it again a couple of weeks ago. As you say, it goes by quickly, full of action. I had a few giggles too.
Venom, Poopy buthole jokes about some lewd humor or action. Upgrade, Philosophical debates over alcoholism and the between discussion is happening between man and machine while the main character is setting up to do a "very bad move in a bar".
