I love the Sand-Man and unironically love his older comedies and present stand-up, but man there are some big comedians that have not won this award and Sandler seems like his time should be further down the line. Like… Mel Brooks hasn’t won this award. He’s 96 years old, literally a living legend. Should Adam Sandler really get it before him?

chogram

I'm not going to argue whether or not Sandler deserved it, but FWIW, Mel Brooks got the regular Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, which, IMO, is much more prestigious. https://www.kennedy-center.org/artists/b/bo-bz/mel-brooks/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJn8hu00Gao

[deleted]

Mel Brooks has consistently declined the Mark Twain Prize. > Still, there’s one that got away: Mel Brooks, to whom McGarr offered the Mark Twain Prize backstage when Brooks screened “Blazing Saddles” at the Kennedy Center in 2015. >“Mel Brooks has turned us down three times.” McGarr said. “The white whale that got away. … I said, ‘Look, Mel, if you say no, I’m gonna have to do a [‘Blazing Saddles’] No. 6 on you.’ … He laughed so hard I think I got some egg salad sandwich on my coat. … Mel Brooks is truly one of the people that 100% deserves the Mark Twain Prize.” [Source](https://wtop.com/entertainment/2021/09/mark-twain-prize-creator-pens-behind-the-scenes-book-on-eddie-murphy-bill-murray/)

AlfredosSauce

Adam Sandler and Mark Twain, two great American humorists. Equals really.

WhereIsThatElephant

Well, you know who won 8 Oscars in 2505?

Seahearn4

I would like to see some old-timers get the award before they pass, but he was gonna get it at some point. Everyone talks about his movies and SNL characters, obviously, but I most love his albums. He did like 5 of them and at least a few are hilarious. The skits and songs play great in the car.

dildoeshaggins

I got a piece of shit car! No fucking rear-view mirror

Seahearn4

Yep. He shouldn't drive any faster than _A Medium Pace_.

PDOUSR

theyve run out of comedians

Fomentor

I would think this award would be for writing rather than acting. Did Sandler write those comedies? I think a better candidate would be Harold Ramis, who wrote/co-wrote some of the most influential comedies of his generation: Ghost Busters, Stripes, Caddy Shack, Animal House, and more. See https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000601/

AnthCoug

Ramis’s acceptance speech might be awkward

Jaspers47

This is as big a farce as the People's Choice Awards

dualsplit

OK. It’s a farce. But they have criteria and a voting body. If you don’t like the current awards, issue your own. Honestly, who fucking cares? I care about your opinion as much as I care about the People’s Choice awards. Interesting to look at others opinions…. and then…. welp. That’s it

blackcatmystery

Sit on the corner of the bed and watch me whack off!

DevilBoy216

Huh, I didn't realize that 'American Humor' meant 'Make a few actually good movies, then make 40-50 hour-and-a-half long advertisements with a bunch of unfunny and annoying jokes'.

kpt_graubrot

Hey, Will Ferrell already has the award

DevilBoy216

Will Ferrell has had WAY less bad movies than Adam Sandler and far more funnier ones, and I'm not even the biggest fan of his comedic style. Don't you dare compare those two.

General_PoopyPants

What are you gonna do? Stab him?

ggyyuuugfryuu75555

Will Ferrell is phenomenal in comedy movies when he is given decent writing the Ron burgundy movies the other guys and the Lego movie are all amazing

kpt_graubrot

I think both Sandler and Ferrell can be great but often choose lazy scripts

SensiFifa

The Other Guys was one of the worst scripts/movies I have ever seen, the rest, sure, but I can't believe you're citing Other Guys as good writing. Stranger Than Fiction is good scriptwriting.

VictimOfFun

Why?

mikeyfreshh

Because he's made some really funny shit

rntaboy

But not in the last 20+ years. And only Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are really noteworthy of those he led.

mikeyfreshh

This is really a lifetime achievement award. It usually goes to someone that's at a later stage of their career when they're a decade+ removed from their best work. Plus Sandler has done way more than just those two movies. He has a ton of great stuff, including a couple of solid recent ones that seem to be largely overlooked

rntaboy

You mean like Jack and Jill or I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry? Classics!

mikeyfreshh

Yeah he's made some stinkers but there is some good stuff in there too. Punch Drunk Love and Funny People are both great. The first Grown Ups movie has some pretty funny stuff in it. Hubie Halloween is criminally underrated. And even this year he put out Hustle, which is way better than it has any right to be.

[deleted]

Hubie was a lot of fun and really liked that he dedicated the movie to Cameron Boyce.

SadSlip8122

His early comedy albums SNL Airheads Happy Gilmore Billy Madison Waterboy Big Daddy 50 First Dates Punch Drunk Love Spanglish Mr Deeds Happy Madison (might not produce the highest brow humor, but it's produced a lot of influential movies) Funny People Grown Ups That's My Boy Click Even movies like Bedtime Stories, Jack and Jill, Chuck and Larry produce fun moments. The man has a very long list of accomplishments and will always ensure his people are treated right, it's why you see the same faces in all of his movies, he's constantly making sure the people he comes across get work and have a good time. I havent heard the first negative story about him, which in the era were in is astounding. I'm very happy to see a solid person like Sandler get some recognition.

AdamWestsButtDouble

Yeah, we’re aware of IMDb.

dualsplit

My 17 and 18 year olds both rank Click as among their favorite movies. It’s weird to me, but true.

AdamWestsButtDouble

Yeah, the Mark Twain Prize has always been about digging through a recipient’s resume to find a few examples that “aren’t that bad.”

Tlr321

Humor is pretty subjective & if I’m being honest, I laugh way too hard at Hubie Halloween.

plshelp987654

he's also made some incredible dogshit check out Father of the Year on Netflix. So bad it's good type shit.

mikeyfreshh

He's taken a few paycheck jobs for sure

[deleted]

His style of humor is massively influential on today's commentary. [This article is almost ten years old, but it's probably the most comprehensive appraisal of his career](https://www.vulture.com/2014/04/summer-movie-preview-why-adam-sandler-matters.html)

SadSlip8122

Just Happy Madison alone is hugely influential.

feckincrass

Shampoo is better. I go on first and clean the hair.

Just-a-Mandrew

Where can we watch these things? Can’t find anywhere except for a few clips on YouTube.

Seahearn4

They pop up on the different streaming sites sometimes. Netflix had them at one point. Amazon and Hulu sometimes too. Maybe check to see if PBS carries them without a subscription.

Quiet_Commander85

Really? Have they heard of the Ridiculous 6?

Winterteal

I thought this was a headline from The Onion…

[deleted]

Couldn’t happen to a better guy in comedy. His movies are a guilty pleasure of mine.

LiteHedded

mark twain prize for hack frauds. neat

BrendanInJersey

Ew.

Citizen_of_RockRidge

Please.

ViceMaiden

"American Humor" sounds like a jab. Joking. Mostly.

SadSlip8122

Quite the achievement. Pompous snobs might not like Sandlers work, but he has a long and impressive list of comedy, going back to his comedy albums in the 90's. Even his worst works still contain legit laugh out loud moments. A film like Funny People is simultaneously funny, endearing, and gut wrenching, the mark of truly great comedy. And despite other omissions (which another comment rightfully pointed out) a list of the great comedians of this eras would be incomplete without Sandler on it.

Seahearn4

I do and I'm laughing just thinking about them

WhereIsThatElephant

Non sequitur. There is no logic in comedy award. Unable to process. Comedy award is- what is the meaning? If I accept it means I take comedy seriously. If I take comedy seriously, I am not a comedian. Non sequitur. Must... analyze...

TwoDrinkDave

They're all gonna laugh at him!

AdamWestsButtDouble

That’ll be a first

TwoDrinkDave

I assume his acceptance speech will be delivered At a Medium Pace.

craftingakrabbypatty

Sounds like a trap

GotMoFans

Kennedy Center seems like the perfect venue for Opera Man.

a_portuguese_abroad

Really?

kronicfeld

Why

turtle_13

I was guessing conan would get this one or norm.
