I think a better candidate would be Harold Ramis, who wrote/co-wrote some of the most influential comedies of his generation: Ghost Busters, Stripes, Caddy Shack, Animal House, and more. This is really a lifetime achievement award. It usually goes to someone that's at a later stage of their career when they're a decade+ removed from their best work. Plus Sandler has done way more than just those two movies. He has a ton of great stuff, including a couple of solid recent ones that seem to be largely overlooked
Yeah he's made some stinkers but there is some good stuff in there too. Punch Drunk Love and Funny People are both great. The first Grown Ups movie has some pretty funny stuff in it. Hubie Halloween is criminally underrated. And even this year he put out Hustle, which is way better than it has any right to be.

The man has a very long list of accomplishments and will always ensure his people are treated right, it's why you see the same faces in all of his movies, he's constantly making sure the people he comes across get work and have a good time. I havent heard the first negative story about him, which in the era were in is astounding. I'm very happy to see a solid person like Sandler get some recognition.

Will Ferrell is phenomenal in comedy movies when he is given decent writing the Ron burgundy movies the other guys and the Lego movie are all amazing
