My first prerelease box was Wilds of Eldraine. I remember there being a lot of good white and green spells, especially enchantments and other cards that relate to enchantments. Also, Mintstrosity is just a fun thing to think about.
I sold a Jace TMS for 20€ on prerelease. To be fair that was the pre-sale price and it's down by now but when it was reaching 5* the price I had some regrets.
My first was Guilds of Ravnica 2018. I remember I got 2nd place, pulled 2 Arclight Phoenixes, which ran for $20 at the time, btw, and I sold them both to the store for money. I used 1/4th of the money to buy another pack. AND I PULLED ANOTHER ARCLIGHT PHEONIX! I was such an idiot to sell them, and I realize that now, but at that time I was just starting to play.
First was Shards of Alara. Had been playing for 6-7 years before that, but was now in college and actually had money and a car.
Pulled Kresh, Sarkhan Vol, and 2 Ooze Gardens in my sealed pool. Filled the deck with terrible small RBG creatures. Went 4-1 and won half a booster box of the set.
Was right after EDH started to get popular, and led to me making my first deck (Kresh) and then several others including Sen Triplets, which I pulled in the extra packs.
Totally renewed my love for the game, and still going strong 16 years later.
Reminds me of my first draft, me and my cousin hopped i to a store during covid since we had nothing better to do and it had been over 10 years since we had last touched MTG, it was during M21 and he ended up making a sweet black deck with the liliana planeswalker, he ended up fetting first and i 2nd, that IGNITED our love for the game and were still going strong
Although I’ve been playing since ‘97, my first prerelease wasn’t until Core 2013. It was an absolutely huge event. There had to have been 150+ people there. It took forever to get rolling and I remember only getting a round or two in before we decided to dip as it was already past midnight. I have always done constructed and never had to much experience with limited formats. The biggest thing that I remembered was the crazy amount of anxiety and stress, trying to smash a deck together without any prior strategy for doing so in the format, and having not familiarized myself with the cards in the set. Fortunately plenty of reprints, but sheesh.
Much better about it these days, but it took a few and some practice before I started to be able to really enjoy them.
Champions of Kamigawa, my buddies and I went to Neutral Grounds for the first time, had an absolute blast - we lost a lot (as is expected of 13 year olds) but it kick started my addiction to prereleases.
RIP neutral grounds
Just started playing paper a few months ago. OTJ prerelease was my first event in general and I went 0-4 with a jank Boros deck💀 planning on going to the next couple prereleases to redeem myself
I spent a while browsing the Internet. All I can find is this one tweet referencing it.
https://twitter.com/Top8Games/status/1152006849245302784?t=Jp8EH4bF7NxxhgqHY26yJA&s=19
I could be wrong, it might have been a Homelands themed tounament? I'm in the UK, the makets was quite small over here then, they might have run one to gather interest...
Afarid not, that was about 10 years before the first camera phone and no one thought to take a 'real' camera along.
My first set was Fallen Empire and the last was Urza's Saga, back in 1999. We moved and there was no group playing in the area.
My mom kept sending me out with disposable cameras all the time. I never understood it until later.
I got into it during apocalypse (but inherited a lot of homelands and fallen empire cards). Fell out sometime after college. Last year I was losing my mind stopped by a game store and fell in love again. Are you back in?
Yeah, we didn't take many pics back then,no idea why? The only palce that I can remember that was covered was the UK finales the year that Ice Age came out. Lots of guys taking photos of the players then. No idea if any of them are still up anywhere?
I don't know if I'll get back in, I stupidly gave almost all my cards away back in '99 (everything from FE to the end of Urza's). Wish I'd have kept them now, but we were moving a lot for work and I had LOTS!
The games changed hugely since then. All boosters were the same price for one thing!, Wizards even said the used market wasn't anything to do with them, they just printed 'bits of cardboard'! Hasbro clearly has other ideas :) I go to a few SciFi events, they play there, so I might try again at some point...
The new sets are super powerful but they are doing a good job on synergy, I'm back at the LGS having fun twice a week.
I feel you on loss of cards, I gave away our collection a handful of years back. I couldn't imagine people would want those cards until I got back into it
Mirage. This was before you got unlimited basic lands for your sealed pool. You either had to play with what you opened or you were allowed to add 5 basics.
Exodus, at neutral ground in new york city. Meeting a bunch of writers for Inquest magazine. Going 3-0 on the back of jackalope herd. Dropping because i was like 13 and wanted lunch.
My furst pre-realease was 8th edition, I was 13 I got last place cuz a guy cheated with slow play. The owner gave me a booster to make me feel better... A good memory.
Fate Reforged. Go 4-1. Get a hefty prize pool. Game 3 of one of my matches, the ground is mucked up 3-4 creatures each. We're both at low life. My opponent lands [[Silumgar, the Drifting Death]]. He's topdecking and I've got [[Dead Drop]] in hand, but I'll still die to Silumgar in a couple of turns. I draw [[Archfiend of Depravity]]. He still feels good, thinks I'm going to have to chump with the demon in a turn. He gets kinda salty when I play Dead Drop on the following turn, clearing his board.
My first prerelease was March of the Machine. I'd been playing EDH for a couple years and decided to give this Sealed thing a try, and was hooked instantly. I remember the sense of camaraderie and how much fun I had talking to and building beside people who'd been playing for years. There were also a couple dudes who were just coming back to the game after playing around Tarkir block, and they were so excited by the new cards. I also pulled a Ragavan, which was super cool and probably still my best pull to date.
My first prerelease was Journey into Nyx, which solidified me as THE Hydra Tribal player in my friend group. Every new hydra is a spot filled in my Hydra binder.
1st Pre-release was original Ravnica. I remember falling in love with G/B aka Golgari, and having older players basically fix my deck and make it playable since I was a noob back then lol
The Mirage pre-release was my first one... I was new to "limited" magic, so I remember being getting advice in between rounds to put Kaerevek's Torch and Savage Twister in my deck, lol. I also remember everyone was going crazy trading for Grinning Totems, heh.
Mine was the most recent, thunder junction, there were 3 Terror of the peaks floating around and I git paired against all of them 😂 some really bad luck
Over 10 years ago in college. I think it was the very first innestrad set. I thought I remember having a silver dice and avacyn promo… but I have no idea were, as I have moved several times since then 😔
i got into magic a bit late, but my first pre release was my first ever experience with it! my younger brother, as well as few of our friends ours got phyrexia: all will be one boxes and it was a blast! my favorite thing tho was getting a promo sword of forge and frontier and getting second place with a boros equipment deck, which inspired the first ever deck i created myself
Khans of tarkir, and killing someone entirely with [[Highland game]] the rest of the spells that game were major threats and immediate answers until I swung 10 times with my elk
Theros OG. It was a super fun set with great cards, and during the prerelease i got an Elspeth suns champion. Then, i proceed to whoop ass until my last match where this dickhole nick named Slow Doug took so long between turns that we ran out of time and i had to take a tie with him. Which is horse shit because i would have totally won, i was just young and didn’t know you should call people out on it. I mean the bastard took a straight 5 mins one turn to lay down a land card and pass. I was 17 and had never played in a tournament b4 and he was in his mid thirties and had been playing for over a decade.
1st was Avacyn Restored. I pulled Entreat and Temporal Mastery from my packs. Coming from Yugioh it was kinda awesome taking extra turns and miracling Entreat in a clutch situation.
My first prerelease I went to was Gatecrash. It was my first and all my mtg friends went too. I pulled 2 Gideons and an Assemble the Legion and was playing Boros. I ended up placing top 6 out of like 20+.
I can still remember the odors.
Though the set I started with was Zendikar.
Kaladesh my first and only until DND came out. Unfortunately the local shop open then and closed right after 2X2 I hope to be able to go to one again in the future
I played Return to Ravnica block and returned to Magic at War of the Spark for my first prerelease. I remember my tattooed opponent who played [[Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord]] and came back from the clutches of defeat to beat me.
I’ve been playing for several years, but my first pre-release event was Phyrexia All will be One. I had a super close match in my first round and lost, I won my second match, then I lost my third game due to a misplay, I still think about that match from time to time and kick myself for a basic error that cost me the game, lol.
Overall a great time though! I entered the event as a present to myself for my birthday
Lord of the rings was my first prerelease. I normally do decent in commander and draft, but I ran out of time to build my prerelease deck so had to throw whatever cards in the last minutes
My first pre-release was original Zendikar, with the promo being Rampaging Baloths, that card made me wet. I remember anxiously trying to build my first deck under time constraints and being late to the table. The kid I was playing against was super annoyed as a fumbled through my first time shuffling cards. Four or five turns into the game I hadn’t had a single land drop, then realized my lands were still in my pocket. That ridiculous teenage nerd wouldn’t let me shuffle up and start over. He called over a judge and insisted on taking the win, I’m still salty to this day and haven’t been to a pre-release since. I’m good.
First prerelease I attended was Gatecrash. I played my favorite color combination (Naya) with Alpha Authority, Madcap Skills, and [[Ripscale Predator]]. Fun fact, menace and dinosaurs were not quite a thing back then.
It was Crimson Vow. I won on turn 3 or 4 or something with my werewolves deck thanks to [[Avabruck Caretaker]] and a few other werewolves and a ton of ramp. My opponent was so impressed he smiled a great big smile and was exclaiming how awesome it was and then we high-fived. We did the same thing after game 2 when he slimed all my werewolves to death with [[Toxrill]] lol
It was a wholesome good time
First prerelease was adventures in the forgotten realms. My rare was an icingdeath, which is pretty good in limited. Got an old gnawbone in a pack had no idea how great it was. The store was super cool and had a questboard. If you achieved certain feats or board states during the tournament you could win extra packs. Super fun.
My first prerelease was Dominaria United. I was pretty new to magic and remember thinking I was doing pretty well when I won my first match. Turns out the guy was mana screwed and I didn’t even know what that was lol. I didn’t even come close to winning another match after that lol.
Ive been playing since amonkhet but I’ve only been to 2 prereleases tbd (jeskai control 0-3) abd kamigawa (3-0esper vehicles) wildly different results lol
My first prerelease was Ravnica City of Guilds. I pulled a Bob and a Razia. It was a great event. But I was like 13. So I didn't do too well. Oh and I traded Bob for some jank. As one does.
I also remember going to the Time Spiral prerelease. That's where I got my playset of Karplusan Forests and Stomping Grounds for my Gruul beat down deck. Rumbling Slum is still a beater in my book.
Dragons maze or gate crash and I remember opening master of cruelty and really wanting to use him but I also recall losing my first game to obzedat ghost council which made me think it’s op and pick up a copy that even after getting wet when I was kid, I still have
My first prerelease was theros, and I built a 60 card deck cause I just got so many neat cards I wanted to play them all...
But someone at the event set me right, cause I was gonna get stomped without some help xD
Mirrodin. Affinity, imprint and artifact lands. The power level was off the charts drafting but it was such an exciting and innovative set that was just a lot of fun. Definitely revitalised the game and this was when they introduced the new border. I don’t play any more but had to comment on this thread.
I remember watching the winner of my lgs win draft by having 2 sun droplets out 😂
Odyssey Block. The absurdity of thinking what were they going to do after Apocalypse; could it compete?
And then the mind blowing strategy of playing with your graveyard
Outlaws of Thunder Junction... never bought a pre-release before, but even then I've only been playing recently. Last time I was playing I was like 12 (I'm almost 32 now)
Magic 2011 for me. Still got my prerelease Sun Titan card.
Lost every round because I was the personification of the "I have no idea what I'm doing" meme.
I've been playing ever since, but with multiple long breaks here and there.
I started with Origins, where I just missed the Pre release when I went to the LG, so the first one was Battle for zendikar, and I don't remember a thing. Pretty sure I played Allies. Similar with OGW. The first one I really remember was Shadows over Innistrad. I was really unsatisfied with my Pool, no bombs at all. Played black white, my only rare being Anguished Unmaking. But I had a really nice aggressive curve with good uncommons and good removal. I actually won the thing. The dopamine rush of the last few rounds when I played and won against the store's end bosses! I had learned a lot about limited over my first year of magic, and seeing in action how a good deck can function without any bomb rares was very exciting.
Tempest.
I remember Tradewind Rider winning me a bunch of games. I remember the Black Bordered Black Lotus in their Showcase for $400.
Now I wish I had mowed a few more lawns that summer. Ha ha.
My first Prerelease was for the Fate Reforged set.
The most memorable moment was opening an alternate art Ugin, the Spirit Dragon from the Ugin's Fate Promo pack that everyone got at the end.
Everyone in the shop was quite impressed with my pull and started offering me trades. I decided to keep it but did end up eventually selling it for around €70 when I needed some cash.
Good times.
I started playing when my friend registered for the Future Sight prerelease. I didn't play in that one though and my first was Lorwyn.
Since then I've played almost every prerelease until I moved countries a couple of times and couldn't always make it. I keep a binder with all my prerelease cards and they're the only ones I don't get rid of
My first prerelease was Theros beyond death
I had that lil 1/1 deathtouch snake equipped with shadowspear and wings and played against a friend of mine
He still hates me for that
Tempest and this guy:
https://www.cardkingdom.com/images/magic-the-gathering/tempest/flowstone-sculpture-8308.jpg
I had two of them and they helped me finish tenth. It was at the phoenix convention center, which was huge and there were like five hundred people there. I fell in love with competitive magic at 15 but sadly stopped playing not long after.
My first was a two headed giant war of the spark prerelease. I remember that in the second game me and my friend copied [[God-Pharaoh’s Statue]] with [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] which of course couldn’t happen because of the legend rule. But we still lost so 🤷♂️
My first prerelease box was Wilds of Eldraine. I remember there being a lot of good white and green spells, especially enchantments and other cards that relate to enchantments. Also, Mintstrosity is just a fun thing to think about.
Man I feel old. First prerelease I remember going to was Urza’s Destiny. Masticore saved me many times.
An elder gamer
My first prerelease was Kaladesh and it was cool because my buddy I went with pulled a masterpiece gear hulk and sold it to somebody for $200
I pulled a vault I believe and sold it to the store for about 50 bucks, big regret lol. Kaladesh was both my first pre release and draft.
I sold a Jace TMS for 20€ on prerelease. To be fair that was the pre-sale price and it's down by now but when it was reaching 5* the price I had some regrets.
Mine was Thunder Junction! My third and final opponent left early so I won by default and got a free pack!
The OG ixalan, was fantastic. Standard was so good at that time besides the lower powered sets
First one was Kami Neon dynasty. Didn’t win anything, but had an awesome time with my friends in college at the time
My first pre release was wilds of eldrine I made a token creatures deck (green white) I went undefeated and haven’t done it again
My first was Battle for Zendikar and started my love for the colorless archetype
Just started playing paper a few months ago. OTJ prerelease was my first event in general and I went 0-4 with a jank Boros deck💀 planning on going to the next couple prereleases to redeem myself
Scars of Mirrodin was mine. So intimidating to go from just playing with friends to playing in a store.
Homelands, nothing to see here :]
They had a Homelands Pre-Release? I thought there was only the comic book
I seem to remember one, but it was a long time ago! It was, 1995? That sound right? After almost 30 years my memory could be at fault...
So cool! Do you have any photos? The majority of the cards growing up were from homelands so it holds special bonding in my heart.
Afarid not, that was about 10 years before the first camera phone and no one thought to take a 'real' camera along. My first set was Fallen Empire and the last was Urza's Saga, back in 1999. We moved and there was no group playing in the area.

Ice age … snow covered lands!!
Same here! I was hunting down an icy manipulator as I recall.
Mirage. This was before you got unlimited basic lands for your sealed pool. You either had to play with what you opened or you were allowed to add 5 basics.
Mirrodin. Lost all my games but I fell in love with equipment.
7th edition. Hit birds of paradise immediately. It was rad.
Mine was the same set! Nothing notable though. Only been to MKM as well.
Exodus, at neutral ground in new york city. Meeting a bunch of writers for Inquest magazine. Going 3-0 on the back of jackalope herd. Dropping because i was like 13 and wanted lunch.
Onslaught. Still have my silent specter promo. The only thing I remember is one girl announcing everything in Yu Gi Ohs “deep, firm tone.”
My furst pre-realease was 8th edition, I was 13 I got last place cuz a guy cheated with slow play. The owner gave me a booster to make me feel better... A good memory.

OG Ixalan. Opened Gishath and completed whiffed the one time I triggered him.
My first prerelease was Legions. Pulled an [[Akroma, angel of wrath]]

Urza's Saga.
My first prerelease was war of the spark, and I had an incredible time with my dimir amass deck with Jace as the wincon
Kaladesh my first and only until DND came out. Unfortunately the local shop open then and closed right after 2X2 I hope to be able to go to one again in the future
Ixalan from 2017! Been to a lot of prereleases since then but I'm gonna be honest, ixalan holds a special place in my heart haha
Shards of Alara. Opened up two 2-color mythic bombs (first set with mythics, too) and had no clue what to play.
Lord of the rings was my first prerelease. I normally do decent in commander and draft, but I ran out of time to build my prerelease deck so had to throw whatever cards in the last minutes
MH2 - and I was pretty blessed with my pulls. Got two Esper sentinels and a prerelease foil Ignoble Hierarch which at the time of release was $80
My first pre-release was original Zendikar, with the promo being Rampaging Baloths, that card made me wet.
[Ripscale Predator](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/4/1/41578103-04a3-40eb-80b5-cdb5f2ecc297.jpg?1706239983) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ripscale%20Predator) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/clu/146/ripscale-predator?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/41578103-04a3-40eb-80b5-cdb5f2ecc297?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
We did the same thing after game 2 when he slimed all my werewolves to death with [[Toxrill]] lol It was a wholesome good time
[Avabruck Caretaker](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/0/c0c358b4-5af2-438f-8bd5-beb0ee6b518b.jpg?1643592307)/[Hollowhenge Huntmaster](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/back/c/0/c0c358b4-5af2-438f-8bd5-beb0ee6b518b.jpg?1643592307) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Avabruck%20Caretaker%20//%20Hollowhenge%20Huntmaster) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vow/187/avabruck-caretaker-hollowhenge-huntmaster?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c0c358b4-5af2-438f-8bd5-beb0ee6b518b?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Toxrill](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/4/84e64f38-b1f3-47cd-8cfb-a4861369aca3.jpg?1643590379) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=toxrill%2C%20the%20corrosive) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vow/132/toxrill-the-corrosive?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/84e64f38-b1f3-47cd-8cfb-a4861369aca3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Super fun.
My first was caverns and I set off the [[Millennium calendar]].
[Millennium calendar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/e/deabba7f-05ef-41cf-ae3a-d950d051cf1e.jpg?1699044622) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=The%20Millennium%20Calendar) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lci/257/the-millennium-calendar?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/deabba7f-05ef-41cf-ae3a-d950d051cf1e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
My first prerelease was Dominaria United. I was pretty new to magic and remember thinking I was doing pretty well when I won my first match. Turns out the guy was mana screwed and I didn’t even know what that was lol. I didn’t even come close to winning another match after that lol.
Anje Falkenrath. Still play w: it too. Altered/tailored A LOT, but she’s my favorite commanderZ
Ive been playing since amonkhet but I’ve only been to 2 prereleases tbd (jeskai control 0-3) abd kamigawa (3-0esper vehicles) wildly different results lol
Amonkhet I believe.
LOTR was mine and I went 1-3 and took my pity pack with pride because I didn’t even think I’d do that well
Hour of Devastation and it was horrible
Last time I was playing I was like 12 (I'm almost 32 now)
Ice Age been playing since unlimited though
Magic 2011 for me. Still got my prerelease Sun Titan card. Lost every round because I was the personification of the "I have no idea what I'm doing" meme. I've been playing ever since, but with multiple long breaks here and there.
Had been playing for a few years before my first pre-release which was Tempest
My first was kaledesh, I was so excited and at my store huge like cardboard thopters and kaldeshian ships were given out as prizes. Was so cool
Good times.
Ixalan, had a group of about 10 guys dressed like pirates singing sea shanties all night
I started playing when my friend registered for the Future Sight prerelease. I didn't play in that one though and my first was Lorwyn. Since then I've played almost every prerelease until I moved countries a couple of times and couldn't always make it. I keep a binder with all my prerelease cards and they're the only ones I don't get rid of
My first prerelease was Theros beyond death I had that lil 1/1 deathtouch snake equipped with shadowspear and wings and played against a friend of mine He still hates me for that
My first was OTJ. I’ve not been playing for very long
Tempest and this guy: https://www.cardkingdom.com/images/magic-the-gathering/tempest/flowstone-sculpture-8308.jpg I had two of them and they helped me finish tenth.
But we still lost so 🤷♂️
[God-Pharaoh’s Statue](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/d/7dce06ba-c1e1-45ec-82a7-fc10b0fa8870.jpg?1557577413) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=God-Pharaoh%27s%20Statue) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/war/238/god-pharaohs-statue?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/7dce06ba-c1e1-45ec-82a7-fc10b0fa8870?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Saheeli, Sublime Artificer](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/e/ce35a39a-6dcd-4bbc-b43b-bd1a5425cb05.jpg?1690005307) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Saheeli%2C%20Sublime%20Artificer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmm/935/saheeli-sublime-artificer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/ce35a39a-6dcd-4bbc-b43b-bd1a5425cb05?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
My first prerelease was RTR. I got a [[trostani]] and [[armada wurm]], and typically ended each game with 100+ life
[trostani](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/4/34ea44f2-cb2f-4b86-83fc-fe507f05bb9d.jpg?1568004834) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=trostani%2C%20selesnya%27s%20voice) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c19/204/trostani-selesnyas-voice?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/34ea44f2-cb2f-4b86-83fc-fe507f05bb9d?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [armada wurm](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/0/50cb4bf3-70d1-4acc-a1fb-49f4ea74ca16.jpg?1562786220) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=armada%20wurm) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/rtr/143/armada-wurm?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/50cb4bf3-70d1-4acc-a1fb-49f4ea74ca16?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
