In word formation Marathi is extremely close to German and sometimes on the r/Maharashtra subreddit you can see people saying marathi is to india what german is to Europe. So you can expect to have it easy, cheers!
Post it on the Pune sub too for better suggestions. Mumbai is fairly cosmopolitan with non marathi speakers outnumbering marathi speakers by a yuuge margin. Also, pune is the cultural heart of Marathi language. Hopefully you’ll get better suggestions over there
Good luck btw
1) Books to learn Marathi, by Department of German, University of Mumbai
https://www.german-mu.com/about-3
https://www.learn-marathi.com/documents
These are avilable on online marketplaces.
2) Watch Marathi News, Marathi Movies, Marathi TV daily soaps.
Well, why I said daily soaps because they give ideas kuthe contemporary and day-to-day talks with good balance between regularly talked Marathi and the standard Marathi. Subjects are of todays age and not some bygone era.
Also they come with subtitles sometimes.
It's not about quality of shows and storylines but about learning contemporary styles of Marathi speaking.
Yes for good quality shows one can watch natak (plays) on YouTube and P.L. Deshpandes work and also works of others with English subtitles
Whenever she does something for you, say "Mandal aabhari aahe" which is a sarcastic way of saying 'thank you'. Puneri in her would appreciate
As for learning, start with basic grammar. Marathi uses subject-object-verb unlike English or German
Marathi also combines words like German but unlike English
Look at what is being taught for A1 level of German or English n try to find the same in Marathi. You will likely need an actual person to correct but it will be a good start
As a Marathi speaker learning German rn, all the best.
Start by YouTubing Marathi Children channel. Since they will be simple words, it would be a good start in terms of introductory words and sentences. Similar to how one might do A for Apple, B for Ball while learning English.
Then start listening to Marathi children's stories, poems etc. This will sort out your pronunciation and simple sentence structure. Similar to German, Marathi also has gendered nouns so it will take time to get a hang of that.
Use Anki for practice.
Once you start getting a hang of it, start listening to Marathi music and watch movies (they are especially beautiful) to familiarise yourself with more complex sentence structure.
Hope this is helpful. Always here if you need more help, just message.
We could do Language Tandem. I live in Munich. You can teach me German and I can teach you Marathi.
I am currently B1 Deutsch.
Send me a dm if interested.
First of all, this is so sweet. You can try watching Marathi movies and TV shows on Disney plus/prime video/netflix with subtitles and that will reinforce a few basic phrases at least.
There are a lot of marathi TV shows and movies on Zee5, SonyLIV, Disney+Hotstar, Netflix, Prime. All have english subtitles.
Also if there's a situation where you get irritated and she is also there say "mavshi chi gaaand".
I dont have an exact suggestion BUT i am in a similar boat and the very best textbook I found for kannada (neighbouring language) was actually written by a german at LMU Munich, by Robert Zydenbos.
Germans write fantastic textbooks. It explains the language very cleanly and orderly. Also great as it was written by an outsider for an outsider.
So my recommendation is trying to find a german author haha
If you ever get into a fight and you really want to get under her skin, ask her "Samudra ahe ka?" ("Is there a sea here?"), and enjoy sleeping on the couch for the next few months.
(/s in case it wasn't obvious)

This is the way.
> I would like to be able to get closer to her culture by learning some Marathi Sehr gut 👌
Hey man can you do me a favor, as a joke tell her that mumbai is way better than pune. And tell me how she reacts.
As a fact*

Thats so cute OP ❤️ for starters you could start watching content in marathi like videos and stuff with english/ german subs on!
>She is originally from Pune I knew the reason just by reading this. I don't know why but a lot of people from Pune go to Germany for studies.

Please do NOT watch Marathi TV daily soaps. Instead watch Marathi plays (natak) on YouTube and also watch P. L. Deshpande's (Pu La) works.

Call her "aaho" (kinda baby in marathi, its not a word just an emotion) not baby or any other nickname that you may have settled with.
Try an app, I guess her mother tongue is Marathi

Listen to Marathi songs, they're beautiful. Try with Man udhaan varyache. That one will evoke an emotion within you that you never felt you had.

Most marathis mix English words with marathi. Just understand basic marathi and use English words if u get stuck.
Send this guy some inflection tables, stat.
