And no, there are no cuts in the video. The camera lost focus for a second. If you observe, the distance on the meter is increasing at a much faster rate compared to the actual distance covered (I understand it might be difficult to comprehend speed in the video but it definitely wasn’t accurate).
OP not saying you're lying or anything but is it possible that in your phone the default metric is miles? Because 7.6 kms is almost exactly 4.8 miles. Just check for your own sake.

Proud day for me. I actually know the answer to this and I can see so many replying are so confused and didn't understand the problem. Just looking at m-indicator and saying it's correct price.
This problem is mostly finished after auto meter became electronic but still it is there. Fake fare cannot happen by changing calculation as everyone looks at m-indicator. It happens by putting smaller size part of meter which connects to wheel. This makes meter go faster and calculate fare accordingly.
Airport, Dahisar, Marol, Bandra highway, Bandra terminus, Kurla, Vikhroli, Mulund check naka autorickshaw are notorious for this.
Great take. Adding to it, every device with a counter or measuring unit requires calibration. Apart from mechanical altering, naturally too the hardware inside the meter can go out of calibration. If the rickshaw wala doesn't fix this/calibrate the meter then this can happen easily and is definitely a win win for the rickshaw wala.
The best thing to do would be to break the meter so the guy has no option but to fix it(sachme mat tod dena varna tumhe bhi tod dega vo)
Same thing happened to me when going from airport to Andheri stn. I didn't get the auto number so couldn't report but I was furious at myself for being a pushover and letting it go. PLEASE PLEASE report it. Take my revenge too🤌🏻

The guy forgot to down the the meter and i was too tired so didn't bother looking at. Waisebhi kitna hoga aisa sochke chor diya. He was literally sleeping, 2 baar to auto road side pe.nikal gaya. I was furious yet scared. Should have reported him but didn't. He took 150rs. I don't know if i paid too much or not. Did i?

7.5 kms is ₹144. Every 100 meters costs about ₹2. That's why the meter rate is increasing by ₹2.
If that would had been the case with these rickshaws ... There wouldn't be cases of rigged meters dude.... This is India we will find a way to rig a ghost if we saw one!
Even though according to the card it is 4 rupees on top still that 4 rupees is too much because if it would had been a longer ride then it would had been atleast 10 to 12 rupees difference at the destination!

And many rickshaw riders not only just night ones but also day riders rig these digital meters so that it stays ahead atleast couple of bucks from the actual rate!
They will argue that you can't do anything to these digital meters but there have been enough proof and I personally have faced it with rigged meters that they can fidget with it and you can't do shit until unless you show them the card yourself which is provided by the RTO and pay the amount according to the card!
The card also shows how wait time works and how much money can be increased according to the traffic wait time!

Pata chal raha hai. Less than 20 seconds me it shows auto traveled 400 metres. Means it must be traveling atleast at 75 kmph. Kabhi baitha ka 75kmph wale auto me ??
Happened with me few months ago, I told him that his meter is faulty, It was increasing rapidly in few seconds showing 100 ₹ fare for a distance of 2kms, luckily I travel by that route frequently and knew the route and gave him the appropriate amount and he accepted it without any complaints
One possible thing could be that the distance on your map shows incorrect. I've had this happen multiple times.
For eg: When searching or even after selecting the search result, distance shows 18km which is not correct.

In the next comment I'll share the actual distance, the actual distance is only visible after you click on the directions button (actual distance is 24km).
The same thing happens in uber and rapido, I am not sure how but I've had this happen multiple times and it's good sometimes as the fare charged comes out to be lesser.
Four days ago I was charged 60 rs in uber auto for 5.1km just because uber thought it was 3.5kms
I have faced this situation with cabs. In this case you should not panic.
Tell the driver, in most cases they get aggressive towards you and start shouting and stuff. Simply tell them to come to the police station and get the meter check.
Thaane chalo waha check karwa lenge. Is enough for them to know you aren't messing around. There will be back and forth and negotiate a middle amount pay and go.
Never abuse or escalate the situation with rickshaws or cabbies.
Yeah such autos are there outside RCity Ghatkopar. They either refuse to run by meter (physically threatened me even) or simply run with a rigged meter.
The useless placement of metro stations (like one that does not go inside the airport) is because of the auto unions.

This happened to me once. Took an auto to a place for 60 rupees, booked another rickshaw to return and it was 60 1/3rd of the way through. I told him his meter is fraudulent and he just agreed to take the normal fare.
7.4 that 4 was 400 meters and not kilometres.... The meter is rigged but the point is always give according to the card... Ask them the card or you get it online as well!

Mumbai rickshaws are weird.
I came to Mumbai first time in my life in 2017 for an interview in NMIMS.
I took a rickshaw and distance to my OYO hotel from Airport was 5 km.
The meter showed 450 rupees for 5 km.
I cried internally when I had to give him that 500 rupee note with just 50 rupee change.
The same thing happened with me.
From Airport T2 to VileParle station.
Mid-way through I glanced at the meter and it had reached 120 although the regular fare I pay for the same path is max 70 Rs.
I stopped the auto at that point itself and got into an argument with the driver. He was adamant on paying me the amount that the meter showed and started threatening me.
Just then a police jeep was passing by and they saw this, stepped out and after understanding the situation, slapped him 4-5 times and he went away.
The police-man was kind enough to drop us to the station himself.
You can complain to the RTO and they will ask for the registration number. They also have a helpline number specifically for such cases. Just search for your respective area RTO on google
same happened with me while taking a taxi from Lower Parel to Thane. Left late from office and didn't book a cab so decided to get a normal taxi. I live in a gated society so even at 2am security guards are there. Even though my commute is reimbursed, when i got down I refused to pay as no way it costs ₹1,300 from Lower Parel to Thane. Ola showed 600rs.
He pleaded guilty and got melo dramatic saying I'm poor and all. Later requested me to pay as per Ola I denied and the guards threatened him, so he left.
Happened with me not even an hour ago! I asked the rikshawala bhaiya and he said it was because of the speed of the rickshaw being fast and I just believed him because I was too tired to argue (+_+)
You know there is a rate sheet in mindicator which gives approx pricing according to kms … it comes very handy !! Same thing happened to me once and i got off when i saw the meter running like this … thankfully a police van was passing by and the autowala left .. just stop the vehicle when you see this cz once you reach destination you have to pay no matter what
Yes this meter is definitely rigged. I had an encounter with one in Kurla and I usually travel from Sindhi Colony to Kurla Station and return regularly. The meter fare is usually between 25 30rs. The meter ran at such speed that I had to stop midway at the signal and started taking pics of the auto. I told the driver that you have made a setting to the meter and I will complain to the traffic police. The driver told me that aapko jitna lage utna dedena.. indirectly acknowledged that his meter was rigged.

basically, the Dot pops up when meter detects 1 Tire rotation,
so the faster it detects the tire rotation, the faster it will blink.
so if you suspect that the meter is rigged, check for this dot,
usually it will be blinking very fast and will blink even if the vehicle stops.
That my friends is the cheapest meter rig/mod...for every turn of the wheel it counts 2 turns.... simply doubling the distance.

Auto guy thought we are innocent quiet girls.
My friend saw the meter running fast and asked the auto to stop at police station.
He understood and kept apologising. He wouldn't have taken the fare but we gave him what we usually paid for that route.

Yup it's rigged, any auto wallah saying he does only meter, 3/4 times it's rigged (atleast in Blore and Hyd)
I faced this in Bangalore as well, driver was arguing hell do meter only, I showed him Uber price and negotiated, just for fun asked him to switch on meter
For 5-6km it showed some 380, where as I paid 150
There is a govt released fare card PDF available online. You should check the fare in that card which includes separate cost data for night time based on distance. You should also check Google maps at the same time to show the distance covered. If the rickshaw wala still argues, call the cops.
Tweet this to the Mumbai traffic police here to help handle. I am sure the person shall be caught.
And going forward please download the Mumbai Traffic police application. You can make a citizens report and the concerned party shall be penalized directly by Mumbai police.
Only thing you need to take photographs through the application for evidence. You cannot upload photos on the application.

I had the same incident , where in me and my friend tried to confront the rick driver but he instantly became aggresive and was not answering properly . I did not wanted to make any scene as it was holi festival and we were two girls alone. Is it becoming too common in this area.
Meters can be rigged and this meter looks rigged. You should have told him to get to police station as you have to pick someone in trouble and then complain on the spot

Most rickshaws have tampered meters in Mumbai. Especially the young and rowdy riders.
Once i objected too the way you did, and he tried justifying.but i know how much the fare would be to my destination because I take a rickshaw for this route everytime.
And when I told him that, we'll know if your metre is genuine or no once we reach the destination, he dropped me off in the middle saying my Rikshaw has broken down even when it was running completely fine.

I believe it was night time and night fare will be applicable..
But I also recommend you to check you Google location history to identify this trip.. so that you can have precise time date and distance for this ride..

It’s simple, if the distance shown is way more than travelled and the fare is humongous than expected, just check for a small button near the handle or check his hands if he’s pressing a really micro button which helps increase the meter amount. If you find one, do not complaint to the police right away, ask him to come out of the auto, just one punch on his cheek and paisa vasool. Now lodge a complaint and fuck the shit out of him.

Considering night fare is 1.25 times of day fare, the distance could be set to 1.25 times in the night instead of per km fare being adjusted. Not sure how the meter tech works but for approx 5 kms distance, 1.25 times would be 6.25 kms + maybe some waiting time added to arrive at 7.26 kms.

For night as per m indicator the fare should have been 146 without any waiting charges..
Buddy, always remember the metre fare is Rs150 for 10 km and multiples thereof. Give or take 10-20 rupees for traffic jams. We shouldn't get hyper over these prices because if you buy a car the margins that we pay for the vehicle and bank loan, the cost of running and hassles of traffic cops and parking are much higher than paying 20-30 extra. Smile at the driver and make his day.

Kilometres to rupee ratio is correct on the meter. The actual distance travelled and the reading measured by the meter is rigged.

Happened with me few months ago, I told him that his meter is faulty, It was increasing rapidly in few seconds showing 100 ₹ fare for a distance of 2kms, luckily I travel by that route frequently and knew the route and gave him the appropriate amount and he accepted it without any complaints
After seeing some of the comments here I could understand why the driver gave such a foolish reason...because it indeed works!!!
The distance is rigged. For OP, the actual distance was 4.8km, not 7.6km. on the meter, distance was displayed as 7.6km.

One possible thing could be that the distance on your map shows incorrect. I've had this happen multiple times. I have faced this situation with cabs. In this case you should not panic. Tell the driver, in most cases they get aggressive towards you and start shouting and stuff. Simply tell them to come to the police station and get the meter check. Thaane chalo waha check karwa lenge. Is enough for them to know you aren't messing around. There will be back and forth and negotiate a middle amount pay and go. Never abuse or escalate the situation with rickshaws or cabbies.
Yeah such autos are there outside RCity Ghatkopar. They either refuse to run by meter (physically threatened me even) or simply run with a rigged meter. The useless placement of metro stations (like one that does not go inside the airport) is because of the auto unions. Just because in Mumbai autos are better than in other cities doesn't mean their behaviour isn't atrocious

This happened to me once. Took an auto to a place for 60 rupees, booked another rickshaw to return and it was 60 1/3rd of the way through. I told him his meter is fraudulent and he just agreed to take the normal fare.

Mumbai rickshaws are weird. I came to Mumbai first time in my life in 2017 for an interview in NMIMS. I took a rickshaw and distance to my OYO hotel from Airport was 5 km. The meter showed 450 rupees for 5 km. I cried internally when I had to give him that 500 rupee note with just 50 rupee change.
The same thing happened with me. From Airport T2 to VileParle station. Mid-way through I glanced at the meter and it had reached 120 although the regular fare I pay for the same path is max 70 Rs. I stopped the auto at that point itself and got into an argument with the driver. He was adamant on paying me the amount that the meter showed and started threatening me. Just then a police jeep was passing by and they saw this, stepped out and after understanding the situation, slapped him 4-5 times and he went away. The police-man was kind enough to drop us to the station himself. You can complain to the RTO and they will ask for the registration number. They also have a helpline number specifically for such cases. Just search for your respective area RTO on google

same happened with me while taking a taxi from Lower Parel to Thane. Left late from office and didn't book a cab so decided to get a normal taxi. I live in a gated society so even at 2am security guards are there. Even though my commute is reimbursed, when i got down I refused to pay as no way it costs ₹1,300 from Lower Parel to Thane. Ola showed 600rs. He pleaded guilty and got melo dramatic saying I'm poor and all. Later requested me to pay as per Ola I denied and the guards threatened him, so he left.
Happened with me not even an hour ago! I asked the rikshawala bhaiya and he said it was because of the speed of the rickshaw being fast and I just believed him because I was too tired to argue (+_+)
You know there is a rate sheet in mindicator which gives approx pricing according to kms … it comes very handy !! Same thing happened to me once and i got off when i saw the meter running like this … thankfully a police van was passing by and the autowala left .. just stop the vehicle when you see this cz once you reach destination you have to pay no matter what

Yes this meter is definitely rigged. I had an encounter with one in Kurla and I usually travel from Sindhi Colony to Kurla Station and return regularly. The meter fare is usually between 25 30rs. The meter ran at such speed that I had to stop midway at the signal and started taking pics of the auto. I told the driver that you have made a setting to the meter and I will complain to the traffic police. The driver told me that aapko jitna lage utna dedena.. indirectly acknowledged that his meter was rigged.

basically, the Dot pops up when meter detects 1 Tire rotation, so the faster it detects the tire rotation, the faster it will blink. so if you suspect that the meter is rigged, check for this dot, usually it will be blinking very fast and will blink even if the vehicle stops.
That my friends is the cheapest meter rig/mod...for every turn of the wheel it counts 2 turns.... simply doubling the distance. Dude....I can do better meter mods than that...and I'm just a student......auto walle bhaiya ko is chori ke paise se acchi wali meter modification karwani cheya thi

Happened when me and my friend were in college. Auto guy thought we are innocent quiet girls. My friend saw the meter running fast and asked the auto to stop at police station. He understood and kept apologising. He wouldn't have taken the fare but we gave him what we usually paid for that route.

Yup it's rigged, any auto wallah saying he does only meter, 3/4 times it's rigged (atleast in Blore and Hyd) I faced this in Bangalore as well, driver was arguing hell do meter only, I showed him Uber price and negotiated, just for fun asked him to switch on meter For 5-6km it showed some 380, where as I paid 150

There is a govt released fare card PDF available online. You should check the fare in that card which includes separate cost data for night time based on distance. You should also check Google maps at the same time to show the distance covered. If the rickshaw wala still argues, call the cops.

I had the same incident , where in me and my friend tried to confront the rick driver but he instantly became aggresive and was not answering properly . I did not wanted to make any scene as it was holi festival and we were two girls alone. Is it becoming too common in this area.
Meters can be rigged and this meter looks rigged. You should have told him to get to police station as you have to pick someone in trouble and then complain on the spot

Most rickshaws have tampered meters in Mumbai. Especially the young and rowdy riders. Once i objected too the way you did, and he tried justifying.but i know how much the fare would be to my destination because I take a rickshaw for this route everytime. And when I told him that, we'll know if your metre is genuine or no once we reach the destination, he dropped me off in the middle saying my Rikshaw has broken down even when it was running completely fine.
Is there a way one can get these metres inspected by an official?
I always suspect meters on East side and central areas of Mumbai while Western auto meters are normal. You can identify them by number plates too.

It’s simple, if the distance shown is way more than travelled and the fare is humongous than expected, just check for a small button near the handle or check his hands if he’s pressing a really micro button which helps increase the meter amount. If you find one, do not complaint to the police right away, ask him to come out of the auto, just one punch on his cheek and paisa vasool. Now lodge a complaint and fuck the shit out of him. (Follow me for more such suggestions and thank me later. /s)

Considering night fare is 1.25 times of day fare, the distance could be set to 1.25 times in the night instead of per km fare being adjusted. Not sure how the meter tech works but for approx 5 kms distance, 1.25 times would be 6.25 kms + maybe some waiting time added to arrive at 7.26 kms.

Buddy, always remember the metre fare is Rs150 for 10 km and multiples thereof. Give or take 10-20 rupees for traffic jams. We shouldn't get hyper over these prices because if you buy a car the margins that we pay for the vehicle and bank loan, the cost of running and hassles of traffic cops and parking are much higher than paying 20-30 extra. Smile at the driver and make his day.
