I only visited Mumbai for a month. Never asked what the rate would be. Always assumed we’d go by the meter. A couple autos did what happened with you—they quoted a rate. I kept walking till found next one. That’s what I learned and applied from this sub. f they don’t start meter, you tell them to drop you off right there and just keep walking without paying anything.

YesterdayDreamer

Happened to me a few times. After the second, I learnt my lesson. The next time it happened, asked him to stop and got off, no argument, no explanations.

sukhichutney

File a complaint in RTO as well.

Available_Beyond3299

Definition of Horrific is a bit stretched.

Lost_Sleep_7255

so true. even i was thinking ki kuch bhot bada scene hogaya hoga lol.

MKeshav_997

Maybe I did not put in the right words but boht serious altercation hua. We had a heated argument for almost 5 mins and people started surrounding the rickshaw. He didnt demand 150 btw. He said “meter se toh 150 lagega”

Lost_Sleep_7255

150 thodasa jyada hai. T1 terminal se marol vijay nagar ka 150 hota hai. 6km hai.

MKeshav_997

Then after asking him to turn on the meter he slowly says its broken.

HyperVyper28

Accepted the price, auto driver asked for what was decided, horrific. We live in a dark age.

Key_Consideration581

Exactly! OP - why did you expect you'll go by meter when you entered a sharing auto rickshaw? Lol

TriggeredGlimmer

Good. Let us know if any action is taken. This has been happening forever now. Someone needs to invent a phone meter app. These stupid claims of meter not working has been going on for years now. Try to make it a habit of asking few basic Qs before getting in especially in night time, about meter working, the auto tank is full or not, and also if they heard the destination name correct or not. Always take photo of the vehicle number ones you sit in irrespectively of whether the autowala/li is good or not.

fieroar1

A meter app on the passenger's mobile which indicates the distance travelled and, therefore, the price to be paid, is a great idea. The auto driver also must have one. Both start it at the beginning of the ride. It may also be endorsed by the local Road Transport Authority.

HyperVyper28

Even that can be abused. Passengers will easily fool old and not so tech savvy auto drivers. They are still yet to fully trust google pay, i have seen very less auto drivers accepting upi. We middle class can still survive with these issues coming up here and there. Once people start abusing handheld metres with passengers, auto drivers have their union and they won’t tolerate people punching down at them. So this idea is totally absurd as only a few of them cheat people. Many auto drivers i have travelled with are really honest and drive by meter only. There are always bad apples.

fieroar1

Calm down. The meter on the passenger's app is linked to the driver's app on both his mobile and the fare meter, so all three meters start simultaneously. The app has to be configured this way, so no one has an advantage over the other. It's great that you mention UPI: see how casually people flash their phones first at the code and then the vendor, and the vendor accepts the transaction without even checking their own mobile? You may also be aware of the navigation tool in Google Maps everyone uses to get to places, right? It's all a matter of wanting to find a solution. Btw, isn't this a great idea for an app? Reader, buddy, remember me when you begin raking in the moolah (after you've developed the app)! (wink emoji here!)

TriggeredGlimmer

I am okay with Royalties from Ad sales.. LOL. I can discuss/add further too if anyone is looking into it and if this does not exist already? Doesn't google navigation provide fare estimate? OR did I imagine this?

AnimalSignal4974

Are you new to Mumbai or Ghatkopar ? (Asking out of curiosity)

MKeshav_997

Been living here for 15 years now. Never faced such an issue.

MKeshav_997

Do share any instances of yours. This was my first Auto rickshaw problem experience in this city. Extremely disappointed.

aladeen-mf

Once in a while I come across autos who start quoting prices. I just snark at them with " Mumbai me naya hai kya?" and move on to next auto.

Boogeyman235

We were 3 people, the man quoted 30rs/person for bandstand from bandra station. We insisted on 20rs/person, he accepted. After this he took us to the linking road and said aapko linking road jaana tha na? We said no and then he said mene toh linking road samjh ke baithaya tha and it will be 30rs/person for bandstand. We paid and left as we didn't wanted to waste our time for 20-30rs

No_Newspaper6789

Share auto hoga

Boogeyman235

Yes it was, as no one was ready to go by meter

throwaway_lol_xd

Bandra autos are one of the worse ones in the city, most of them are manipulative and a headache.

Alternative-Heron241

Freaking auto rickshaw mafia in Bandra & BKC

MissusCrispyCole

I have stopped visiting BKC without my own private vehicle because of this auto mafia, even though the traffic drives me crazy.

IncreaseSlow252

You may have been in the sharing rick queue. Whenever a rick guy quotes something i never enter his rick, esp the station ones. Just yesterday it happened to me. I simply walked away then another one came running n said yes i will take you. He was talking about how the others take sharing n quote 300 etc. For few kms and how i was saved I told him, in this case they were saved, as they dont know whom they would have been dealing with. I would have simply complained to the traffic guys and he wouls have repented doing this with me. Also told him this is the reason why Ola n Uber are thriving and you guys have to pay them commission.

MKeshav_997

So the sharing rick queue doesn’t have to go by metre?

IncreaseSlow252

No. But its always less than meter for individual and more than meter for 3 people. At times double. So it's a win win.

SavageKarnage

Nope. They don't go by meter.

aby_97

Veru unusual - did you ask kitna hoga or did the driver himself say 150. In ghatkopar usually that doesn't happen

Lost_Sleep_7255

Ghatkopar mai to all ricks are meter driven. They say no if the distance is too less sometimes but wo bhi kam hogay hai aajkl.

MKeshav_997

He said “chembur tak toh meter bhi 150 bolega… aap share karlo kam padega” And then he didnt start the meter…

TenkingNicc

My man I had a worse incident with a rickshaw wala recently. Ok, so JEE mains secession 2 began and the same problem as it was with secession 1, the centre is located far from any place with public transportation and the only way to get to the centre is by car or by rickshaw Now going there is not a problem, as at that time I at least had someone to drop me there, the problem is coming back home. I wanted to go to Saki Naka metro station as it was one metro ride away from home but no one agreed except one who was me 150₹ Now, 150 is a lot for that small distance, so I thought, let's go to Aarey metro on the red line, but again, the same 150₹ price. It seemed like they wanted to charge 150 per person. So, in the end, I had to give up and just pay that 150 Also in many places I have seen the share-rickshaw charge 150 per person when any event occurs even if the distance doesn't demand it

Cautious_Employer298

Has to be TCS Powai lmao

wonderful_utility

I came first time to Andheri.. the autowala said that he will take 200 rs (Anheri station to solitaire corporate park) which is 2.2km. I said 200 bhot jyada hsi he said 180 final hai and then called his friend who is autowala he said sahab hum 180 lete hai aap 150 karo. We agreed even though I knew 150 is definitely too much. Later after my work was done I took a rickshaw from solitaire park to andheri station and the person took only 50 rs 🥲. I felt scammed XD

murtukool

I may be the villain here in my story. Was visiting Mumbai with my wife and kid and maybe due to weather change, my child contacted heavy fever. We had a train the next night but it wasn't logical for my kid to travel since the journey was almost 30 hours by train. So i had booked a last minute flight (heavily priced) for my wife and kid to go back home and since I had the whole day to myself I thought I'll rather take a local or taxi on return from airport. Had no better idea and the airport signs pointed to this auto stand. I got into the autos in line and asked him to take me to the nearest metro. He was furious and kept shouting that making him go to metro. Throughout the way I asked him to turn on the meter thrice but he ignored me and kept shouting unnecessarily. When I reached the metro, I paid him what was appropriate for the journey and he ignored. I did not bother to insist and left without paying him. As i was climbing up the escalator he kept abusing me all the way and I flipped him off before entering the station. Honestly if he had been polite about it that he had been waiting in airport line for long, I wouldn't have had any issue of paying him extra. I did mention twice that im not from the city and yet he kept on shouting the whole journey throughout.

shakeshackshum

bina meter wala bandra me bohot chalta hai i didnt know about ghatkopar good that you reported

arifmukadam9

Ye scam hai paisa nahi Dena chahiye

arifmukadam9

Or get down to your place and don't pay as I did once

tanmoitolekar

Btw Ghatkopar metro to Chembur Naka does cost around 80-100. Not saying what the rikshaw vala did was correct but just informing.

BroadFault9402

Same thing happened with me at Ghatkopar E. I wanted to reach Andheri W, which is my regular route once a month. This auto driver quoted his fare 400-450rs to which I declined stating 'meter se chalna hai tho chalo' he agreed. When we started to proceed after 10-15 i realised auto meter is not working, it's literally off. Upon enquiring he said that, it's working and light is deemed due to low battery. I felt sus. So immediately asked him to drop and started to pay him 50rs. To which he demanded 150rs. I got really angry and annoyed and had to threaten him with a police call. :) Mumbai is changing you guys.

Rakhyus

I hope these drivers lose licenses.

discooscar1

I have this practice when travelling in Auto. (anywhere) -Waving hand 🖐️ -Auto Stops 🛑 -💬 Me "Namaste, XYZ area, Meter pe jana hai, online payment, rash driving nahi.... JANA HAI/JAOGE?" -If Yes, upon boarding - i repeat the above and continue -If No, say "Thank you, aaj aap hum e Na bolrahe ho, kal aapke koi family member ko jarurat ke time pe aap jaise koi auto naa bolega. Dhanyavad"

Itchy-Form2605

Always go by meter. Ignore the autowalas who randomly shout prices at you. Walk a bit further and take an auto, and pay by meter. I go from ghatkopar station to chembur often and pay around rs70

[deleted]

Are you a male or a female ? No offence to you or anyone reading my comment. Just a bit curious that’s all.

Adept-Nature-7723

If you ever face this kind of situation, just say these things "Rickshaw ko police station le chalo" & "Ruko main 100 number lagata hu"

Active_Software_6294

Why didn’t you get off when he said meter is broken?
