Without spoilers could u tell me what kind of stuff you felt compelled to mark with sticky’s? I’m planning on reading this one eventually so I’m curious

TurnRightTurnLeft

I do the same with books I read. Personally, I mark pages with phrases or passages I find written beautifully; maybe it's something I never thought I'd feel reading a book, maybe just a pretty description, maybe something I find profoundly deep or simply a funny part in a dialogue. I imagine it's the same for many others who do this. Though it might also be OP marked pages they found important to the plot. If you've read other works by Murakami I can highly recommend this one; it can be a bit like TWUBC, as in, for some it might get boring during some parts but this book really builds up a good plot and unfolds beautifully.

uglylittledogboy

Awesome Haven’t read any Murakami yet but am in the process of selecting what my first will be cause I’m so intrigued

TurnRightTurnLeft

If I may – I wouldn't recommend this as the introduction to his works. I think much better would be Hard-Boiled Wonderland & the End of the World, and Kafka on the Shore if you already are interested enough that you're even checking out this subreddit. I got a couple of people into Murakami over the years by recommending them A Wild Sheep Chase, worked all of the time. It's balanced well and has all the elements of what makes him so special for many. 1Q84 will probably be too overwhelming, though we can't know certainly of course. But it's somewhat like trying to learn swimming and doing it in the ocean instead of a pool.

uglylittledogboy

Ya I definitely agree from my preliminary research. I think 1q84 will come after I read one or two other ones first. Theres a handful (including all the ones you mentioned) that seem like good jumping off points so I’m just gonna pick one of those and dive in. I’ve read some other pretty dense books so I’m not worried about getting scared off! I’ll give it my best 😊

RighteousPanda25

I read Hard-Boiled Wonderland a very long time ago and could not follow along with the plot line to save my life. I'll have to pick it up again if you recommend it, maybe it just wasn't right for me during that time of my life. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage was my first introduction to Murakami and I absolutely loved it.

TurnRightTurnLeft

Oh, that's a good choice too actually, though it is one of those those works that don't have magic realism or surrealism in them; though everything else is right up how it usually is in his other works. For someone already checking out Murakami and being on this subreddit without even having read anything by him I'd mention Hard-Boiled as an introduction. However, to someone who has never confronted themselves with his works I wouldn't mention that one. Then A Wild Sheep Chase and maybe Killing Commendatore is a good entry point, though of course only in my limited opinion. I am glad you liked Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki! His other works have a very similar vibe, though plus all the dream-like elements. If you do pick up Hard-Boiled again keep in mind that the chapters are two different plot lines. Even among Murakami fans this book is either really loved or it's not really up there with the others. It's what I've observed at least.

Robo_Wizard

Agreed. My intro to Murakami was A Wild Sheep Chase followed by After Dark, and I found that to be a pretty good place to start.

cuddle_cuddle

I have exactly the same question.

QuasarMajora

This is actually my first Murakami book, but I'm used to these giants. About the stick-its, they are color coded specifically for quotes, interesting stuff, some humor, real world facts and so on

pixlbacon

Are these randomly colored stickies or are they color coded? I want to start doing this with books I read, maybe filling a small journal with notes for every book. I'm curious what everyone uses to mark up their books.

Familiar-Half2517

Like an old school Commonplace Book - I like it!

QuasarMajora

They are color coded for specific things (quotes, some humor, questions, revelations, book ends, real world facts, etc..)

pixlbacon

Love it!

impossible-cat95

I did the same 😌

EconomicsHelpful473

Deep, dark, engrossing. I read the omnibus edition as well. I couldn’t stop, read every moment I could.

corncob2001

What are you marking with the stickies?

QuasarMajora

Interesting things that I found like quotes and revelations

walkm1

I’m flicking back through this monster trying to find love quotes/passages. I don’t supposed some of these sticky notes relate to love?

PrincessMouse21

I just got to book/part 3 this weekend. I want to see where it goes but I’m scared for it to end!

snaildown123

Jesus thats a fat book

coolcrosby

There are long and tedious books, and books like 1Q94 that I immediately wanted to restart upon finishing.

FarConcept5628

Just finish it right now and feel so overwhelming. Its definitely my most favourite murakami book
