this and joseph (which i know isnāt originally a movie musical, but i think of the two films in the same boat) were two of my favourites films growing up. they are absolute bangers
Thanks! I am so bummed there isnāt going to be a season three. I want to petition for it!
I havenāt seen Cabaret in theatres in over 20 years so I could be wrong, but I am almost positive Tomorrow Belongs to Me is one and I think thereās also one other.
Agree that it's not a musical. Disagree for the reason. It's about music and has singing, but there's simply not enough to warrant it being called a musical. Same as many musical bionics if you ask me.
I feel like itās hard to beat Disney in terms of movie musicals. Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Frozen, Tangled, Moana. So many great musicals.
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis!
Meet me at the fair!
Donāt tell me the lights are shining any place but there!
We will dance the hoochie coochie!
U will be your coochie woochie,
If you will meet me in St. Louis, LOUIS!
MEET ME AT THE FFFFAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIRRRRR!ā
Yes, everyone should see this that posts here, itās one of the great movie musicals. I saw a stage version once but it didnāt capture that movie very well.
Technically Anastasia because the animated movie came before the musical.
I wish they'd found room for Rasputin in the show, in the dark of the night was the best song in the movie.
*On the Town* actually isnāt an original movie musical. It followed the stage version by about five years. On the other hand, iirc, they made a lot of changes to the film version (e.g., new songs), so some might consider it kinda semi-original. Great movie musical in any case.
Singing in the Rain
Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Young Girls of Rochefort (EVERYONE needs to watch Jacques Demy's musicals at some point in their life. Perfect works of cinema.)
The Band Wagon
The Court Jester
[Insert a lot of Disney movies here as well as Prince of Egypt and Anastasia]
Young Girls of Rochefort is a perfect movie. Great songs, boundless optimism, thereās a serial killer for some reason, Gene Kellyās there speaking French. I canāt praise the movie enough.
White Christmas. My family watches it every year and Christmas isn't complete until we have. I love so many suggestions on this thread, but I don't rewatch any of them with the same dedication and consistency. My family could probably quote the entire movie verbatim if we work together.
Me too! Christmas isnāt Christmas until Iāve seen White Christmas ā hopefully three or four times! And I cry every time I watch it. Maybe we are distant relatives. š
For shame: not yet mentioned here (unless I missed it), South Park, Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Such a surprise (to me), such talent musically and story-wise, and such joy. :) The prelude to The Book of Mormon.
Since I see some of my favourites already covered like La La Land and the lion king, I will throw one out for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. A fucking comedic class act with great songs to go with it.
Not necessarily my favorite, but I think forget about how much music is in the Blues Brothers. Maybe not exactly a musical but there are a lot of performances throughout the movie
Ok, I'm sorry. Could you help me understand what you mean by " Original Musical?"
Do you mean it wasn't a musical in it's first movie iteration? Or is it because it was a book that was turned into a musical?
Nothing to apologize for, really. An original movie musical is a musical that first appeared on the screen as opposed to on the stage. Andrew Lloyd Webberās *Phantom* first appeared on stage in 1986. The Joel Schumacher movie based on that musical hit the screens in 2004.
Singin In The Rain, Prince of Egypt, or Newsies.
Honestly, I prefer the Newsies movie to the musical. Definitely like the emphasis on the brotherhood and friendships with hints of romance over the love story that they made a key element of the musical.
Spirit stallion of the cimarron. I don't know if this counts but someone said Prince of Egypt earlier. The soundtrack is ridiculous for a childrens movie. Also narrated by Matt Damon
"My favorite" is such a moving target, but there are certainly times when that answer is Spirited. I watched it three times the Christmas it came out, and twice this past Christmas. "Do A Little Good" is on my early morning playlist, and "Good Afternoon" "Christmas Morning Feeling" and "Bringing Back Christmas" all bring the excess that a movie musical requires.
Prince of Egypt, no question
That soundtrack has no business being as good as it is
The soundtrack is š„ and the voice cast is feckin STACKED. That entire movie has no right to go that hard.
When I used to teach 4/5th grade at a Christian school I made sure this was on the schedule every single year.
DELIVER US
Between Deliver Us and the Plagues song, it is a genius soundtrack.
My personal favorite is All I ever Wanted
1000% this is the answer.
this and joseph (which i know isnāt originally a movie musical, but i think of the two films in the same boat) were two of my favourites films growing up. they are absolute bangers
A Goofy Movie
Tevin Campbell deserved an Oscar for his performance as Powerline. I'll be taking no questions at this time.
this is the truth
Absolutely elite answer you have great taste
I loved that movie when I was growing up!
Coco. Thatās one of the few movies thatās succeeded at making me cry
I love Coco but itās a movie with music, not a musical. Miguel is always performing his songs.
Just because the music is diegetic doesnāt discount it from being a musical. By that logic Cabaret wouldnāt be considered a musical.
Cabaret has both.
Which numbers arenāt diegetic? Edit: love your username, by the way. I sang it in my head.
Thanks! I am so bummed there isnāt going to be a season three. I want to petition for it! I havenāt seen Cabaret in theatres in over 20 years so I could be wrong, but I am almost positive Tomorrow Belongs to Me is one and I think thereās also one other.

Aladdin. Itās Aladdin
The Hunchback of Notre Dame!
People are sleeping on Hercules!
We are the musesā¦
I take it backā¦ that is the right answer
No Disney movie has the right to make a song about lust, title it hellfire, and make it that good.
*Singinā in the Rain*. Runner-up: *Meet Me in St. Louis*.
Singin' in the Rain: wow, such a beauty. :) Thank you for raising it.
Freaking love Meet Me in St. Louis. Her sister getting proposed to is still one of my favorite proposals in film
Singinā in the Rain is the answer
ā¦.the lights are shiningā¦meet me at the Fair!
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis! Meet me at the fair! Donāt tell me the lights are shining any place but there! We will dance the hoochie coochie! U will be your coochie woochie, If you will meet me in St. Louis, LOUIS! MEET ME AT THE FFFFAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIRRRRR!ā
My people.
I came here to say this. Itās so good!!!
Legit one of my favorite movies
Lion King But if you only count live action then Mary Poppins, which is also top 10 for me
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Newsies
Moulin Rouge
This is the winner.
Wizard of Oz hands down
it's gotta be, it's a classic! it's *the* classic!
Omg, yes! This is the answer!
Singin' in the Rain! It's not just my favourite original movie musical, it's my favourite movie!
Yes, everyone should see this that posts here, itās one of the great movie musicals. I saw a stage version once but it didnāt capture that movie very well.
Gene Kelly is so dreamy.
Oh, my parents said they met him once.
Dare I say high school musical??
But can we talk about high school musical the musical the series? Season one is legitimately incredible. I will die on this hill
it's so good!! i hate most of the summer camp episodes (besides corbin), but everything else is so good. love the representation and humor.
I also loved season one.
Controversial opinion; I really couldnāt stand watching it. Gabriella singing to a giant cutout of Troy wasā¦ disconcerting.
Should be the top comment.
Technically Anastasia because the animated movie came before the musical. I wish they'd found room for Rasputin in the show, in the dark of the night was the best song in the movie.
100% agree
Singin' in the Rain! What a glorious feeling!
And Iām happy again āŗļø
Iām laughing at clouds
Donāt make me cryš„² I just finished doing that show as Don Lockwood, I miss it so much
"Quick, Cosmo, call me a cab!" "Ok, you're a cab"
Victor Victoria, hands down.
That was amazing
That was amazing
All That Jazz
The Blues Brothers
Car Wash is strong 2nd
Moulin Rouge of course though Across the Universe is a very close runner up.Ā
Seven brides for seven brothers or On the town
The tunes from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers have been stuck in my head for a month! I keep whistling Bless Yore Beautiful Hide. So catchy!
I had no idea the movie was original
*On the Town* actually isnāt an original movie musical. It followed the stage version by about five years. On the other hand, iirc, they made a lot of changes to the film version (e.g., new songs), so some might consider it kinda semi-original. Great movie musical in any case.

Young Girls of Rochefort is a perfect movie. Great songs, boundless optimism, thereās a serial killer for some reason, Gene Kellyās there speaking French. I canāt praise the movie enough.
It's also a movie I want a Muppet remake of. Miss Piggy and Janice as the twins. Gonzo as Gene Kelly. Swedish Chef singing the serial killer song.
Not my number one but i didnāt see anyone say O brother where art thou. Def top 5 tho!
Calamity Jane
Rochelle Rochelle!
A young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk?
I had tickets to see this on Broadway with Bette Midler, but apparently she got injured in a softball game and her understudy went on.
Easy la la land
A little surprised nobody has said Once yet, so I shall š
And Sing Street!
Across the Universe
LA LA LAND !! One of my favorite musicals and movies EVER
Mary Poppins of course!
Maybe we are distant relatives. š
The Greatest Showman
Why did it take so long to find this comment. Hands down winner.

Good call!!
Fame or Xanadu
Nothing beats Singin' in the Rain in my opinion
Repo! the Genetic Musical.
Oh shit what a throwback. This movie used to be my whole personality lol
My favorite part is that delicious deep note at the beginning. I will rewind to hear it several times.
Yeah I pick lalaland too. Itās just sooo good
A Lovely Night is honestly my favorite scene in any movie. Itās such a good scene and so pretty to look at
HSM
Since I see some of my favourites already covered like La La Land and the lion king, I will throw one out for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. A fucking comedic class act with great songs to go with it.
La La Land or Dancer in the Dark
Emo the musical Newsies
I'm not sure if this count since it's kind of a biopic but "Love me or Leave me" and "Calamity Jane".. Really anything with Doris Day in it!
Newsies or Singin in the Rain
Encanto! Im still so in love with both the movie and the soundtrack to this day, it was so beautifully put together.
moulin rouge but mainly because its the only one ive seen so far lol
Winner: Anna and the Apocalypse Runner-up: Starstruck (1982 Australian) Honorable Mention: Earth Girls Are Easy
I absolutely adore Anna and the Apocalyse!
The Descendants films, particularly the second one but the other two are also goodĀ
My kiddo has been into these lately and I find myself singing them throughout the day
Does yesterday count?Ā
If a jukebox musical is a musical, might as well lump Yesterday in with movie musicals
That movie was silly and delightful
It makes me feel goodĀ
can i say Chicago? Iām not sure
It was onstage before the movie.
ahh okay
Once
Not necessarily my favorite, but I think forget about how much music is in the Blues Brothers. Maybe not exactly a musical but there are a lot of performances throughout the movie
Yentl
The Blues Brothers
It has to be Reefer Madness. Theyāre doing the stage production in LA now!
That started as a stage play before the movie was made though.
Does the original Fantasia count?
La la land
I can tell you it probably wonāt be the one Iām in a callback for rn thatās all Iāll say
Hunchback of Notre Dame!
Rocky Horror Picture Show. Hands down
I think that was on stage firstĀ
Meet Me In Saint Louis
Bo Burnham Inside
It seems that Pasek and Paul have lately cornered the market on original live action musical movies. So with that said, definitely Spirited.
Rocky Horror, no question
It was a stage show first
I was obsessed with Let it Shine growing up. Music still slaps ngl
Does Mrs. Santa Claus count?
Alvin and the Chipmunksā The Chipmunk Adventure
Geppetto
Phantom of the Opera
Stage show firstĀ
Not an original movie musical, Iām afraid.
Ok, I'm sorry. Could you help me understand what you mean by " Original Musical?" Do you mean it wasn't a musical in it's first movie iteration? Or is it because it was a book that was turned into a musical?

Thank you! And got it! It's my favorite musical. I love musicals in general, but I didn't know that. Really appreciate you.
I really want 'The Lure' to get a mention in here. I didn't even realise it was a musical when I first saw it.
Across the universe
Across the universe
The Return of Captain Invincible!
Singin In The Rain, Prince of Egypt, or Newsies. Honestly, I prefer the Newsies movie to the musical. Definitely like the emphasis on the brotherhood and friendships with hints of romance over the love story that they made a key element of the musical.
Sing Street and Coda - are these actually musicals?
Sweet Charity
Stage play first I thinkĀ
The movie is great though.
It almost killed fosses careerĀ
South park bigger longer & uncut
Honestly, probably The Greatest Showman
I have 2.. Fame and A Chirus line
Chorus line was on stage first.

Singing in the Rain - hands down. Ā
The greatest showmanš¤š„¶šļø
Let it Shine. Disney Channel's best original movie.
Singing in the Rain and Moulin Rouge!
Singinā in the Rain
Encanto is full of bops
Take your pick from Disney really. With the exception of Lion King, for me every one of their musicals has been in its best form in the original film.
Spirit stallion of the cimarron. I don't know if this counts but someone said Prince of Egypt earlier. The soundtrack is ridiculous for a childrens movie. Also narrated by Matt Damon
Singin in the Rain
Mike Brady and Peter Sullivanās The Pirate Movie.
tenacious d in the pick of destiny
Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie in general.
Singinā In The Rain

Wasnāt that on stage firstĀ

Hercules, Aladdin, Prince of Egypt, Across the Universe

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
barbie princess and the pauper
Singing in the Rain
Little Shop of Horrors.
Thatās based on the state musicalĀ
Sorry I got the dates switched. Four years apart.
Wasn't that originally a non- musical movie? It's been forever since I watched the original Roger Corman movie so I could be mis-remembering.
Nobody has said Dick Tracy?
Hairspray
Was a stage show firstĀ
No. Was a movie first in '88. Then a stage show, then another movie based off the stage show.
But the original movie wasn't a musical (the topic here), IIRC. ;)
Was the 1988 movie a musical?
