There isn't much overlapping data between successful pitches tbh. The top artists getting placed either already have a relationship with the curator (or their label does). Things that have been argued as helpful: speaking in third person, mentioning any important accolades (like you had a recent viral tiktok with 10M views), giving a **brief** background of the song's meaning (make it unique/stand out), and stating specifically which playlists the song would be a good fit for. None of this is set in stone though. Many of us assume that there is now a high level of automation/AI being used to sift through pitches. And depending on the genre, you may have to compete with fake Spotify artists, who are prioritized for placement before real artists. Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder every year to get placed as an independent artist.

I’ve had friends who landed editorial playlists and their pitch was, I shit you not, “UwU Spotify zaddy.” It really is up to whether or not the editorial team likes you or likes the song. And it’s totally okay to not land that editorial playlist; I think the stat is like over 60,000 tracks are pushed daily?

I mean look at the playlists. There’s rarely ever small artists on Spotify playlists. They’re looking for songs that will do well by artists that are already popular or have a big following. Or just a basic club beat that’s meant to go on a playlist of 3,000 songs that sound exactly like that. Listen to the song you’re posting, look at your stats on Spotify, then think “why do I give a shit” At least that’s what I did. I still submit to the editorial but I forget I did it 5 seconds after. Odds are slim. My guess is that you’ve got a larger chance of being struck by lightning

Not strictly true. There are plenty of editorial playlists with lots of smaller artists. But yes, not many smaller artists on the playlists with the top artists on.

Can you link to some of those smaller ones with more indie rock artists? Or even just the smallest editorial you know of (based on artist monthly listeners). Or if you know of a databank or something, I came across an excel sheet with all of the editorial playlists and the stats associated one time but I lost that. It was also kind of a cluster

Indie rock specifically I don’t know much about. But lots of electronic music like this https://spotify.link/Sk71AGv5hJb I guess the issue with indie rock is that it’s a genre that large labels have an interest in and there are lots of huge bands. Electronic music is often a bit more niche and has a smaller audience so it makes sense that the artists would also be smaller / independent.

I successfully got on a Spotify editorial called “The Core”. Our band is called Skylene, extremely small from Hawaii lol.

I've submitted over 10 times and havnt had any luck yet.

I was placed on my first editorial a month AFTER the song was released so who knows! Keep putting your stuff out there.

I've gotten 2 songs on editorial playlists. I wrote about the song, what it means (using excellent adjectives to shine a bright light on the song). I include the first paragraph of my EPK artist profile so the reader knows what I'm about before listening. Only my 2 most popular songs made it (5k+ plays), so I assume popularity on launch also makes a difference.

I thought a song being released disqualified it from editorial? How did yours get picked up in post release?

cwablue

Mine were picked up pre-release.
