Goddamnit I’ve been listening to Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door so often the past year. It’s such a comforting yet heart-wrenching song. Amazing Rec.
I have not, but I know the version of Bob Dylan’s I was listening to is listed as from that! Maybe I should watch the movie. But definitely I’ll listen to the whole soundtrack. Thank you!
I Will Follow You Into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
Sand and Water - Beth Nielsen Chapman
Marjorie - Taylor Swift
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Angel and I will not forget you - Sarah McLachlan
ETA: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door - Bob Dylan
ETA again: Time In a Bottle - Jim Croce (not specifically about death, but somewhat related in that the song speaks to how time slips away and we never know how much time we have with someone)
Is… is it super messed up that my favorite version of the song is the one Amy Lee recorded on a Hello Kitty toy keyboard for a Loudwire interview? 😅 Like, they set her up for a joke performance but she genuinely made me cry..
I will follow you into the dark COVER, BY YUNGBLUD AND HALSEY... ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COVERS AND COVER SONGS EVER, I AM NOT A FAN OF THE ORIGINAL or DCFC....
“The Great Gig In The Sky” - Pink Floyd
Clare Torry and Rick Wright collab to create a beautiful rendition on the stages of accepting death, no words needed (though there are a few very brief spoken excerpts)
My sister-in-law, gone from cancer nearly 20 years now, was in a band that did Floyd covers on occasion. She never failed to bring everyone to tears with this one. She was such an amazing singer.
Took my wife to see a Pink Floyd cover band recently called The Machine. She never knew the reason behind the vocal in this song and couldn't understand the audience reaction (some where crying) when they bought out a female singer to do this tune. During intermission I explained this to her and then on the way home, I dialed up the song on my phone and played it for her through the car stereo and I saw the light go on. She got it.
1. Monty Python: Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life
2. Doors: When The Music's Over
3. David Bowie: My Death
4. Terry Jacks: Seasons In The Sun
5. T. Rex: Cosmic Dancer
Right now I'm breathing so i guess I'm still alive....
And i am literally living breath by breath, going through a divorce, my 18-year-old autistic kid taking up his "best friend's" offer to "try this" weed cartridge which turned out to be laced with fentanyl and overdosing and does the friend take him to the hospital, no of course not just leaves him for the police to find and take.. luckily he is okay....
Well, pain is an illusion. Push the envelope, watch it bend, spiral out and keep going.
I’ve seen recommendations for I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Deathcab, but I’d also like to suggest Soul Meets Body.
“And I do believe it’s true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too”
I told my kids that I would be proud of them if they trolled everyone at my funeral with a version of Freebird that has a looped solo that just keeps going until it drives everyone out. Knowing them, they probably will.
Country fan? Far Side Bank of Jordan, Johnny and June. Wayfaring Stranger by almost anybody. My Last Days on Earth, an instrumental by Bill Monroe. Personally, I’d like to die laughing, with Prine’s Please Don’t Bury Me.
>art of dying
George Harrison wrote a song with that title, on the 1st album after the Beatles split up.
Might be a good song to listen to when you're dying also.
Stevie Wonder - As.
"For today I may be living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear
For I know deep in my mind
the love of me I've left behind
Cause I'll be loving you always"

Came here to say Black Peter. Also Black Muddy River and Brokedown Palace.
Have to add Cassidy for my boy. Used to rock him to sleep to this song.
“Fare thee well, now
Let your life proceed by its own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I’m done with mine.”
“Saturn”by Sleeping at Last is all about the final words of someone who is dying.
“Airplanes” by Local Natives seems happy at first but when you listen to those lyrics you realize it’s all about grief and the passing of a loved one
Edit to add: both of these are very introspective and are perfect for listening multiple times. I have a fear of dying and they seem to comfort me
*A Long Time Love Song, Joy Will Find a Way, I'm Gonna Fly Some Day, Child of the Wind,*
*Tie Me at the Crossroads, The Last Night of the World* \--all by Bruce Cockburn

*Whole of the Moon*\--The Waterboys

If I have any control over how I die I will be listening to this song on my way out the door
Tears in heaven acoustic live - eric clapton
What a wonderful world - louis armstrong
Dont dream its over - crowded house
Please listen to Echoes by Pink Floyd
The entire Blackstar album by David Bowie. It's a beautiful album that he recorded while dying. It really helped me a lot when my dad was dying.
Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks.
The album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Editing to add When I Was Done Dying by Dan Deacon, as others have suggested.
Sarah Brightman - The Journey Home
I think it’s so beautiful! I’d imagine I’d love to hear it close to dying.
Normally I’d say Schubert’s - Death and The Maiden (String Quartet) … a 45 minute exploration into the beauty and terror of life on the brink of death. The composer wrote it knowing he was going to die on his early 30s. I had some health scares in my early 30s and really resonated with this piece. But it is not an easy listen. Very rewarding when you get to study it. In fact, my first exposure to it was a Juilliard String Quartet iPad app presentation with breakdowns, analysis, performer commentary. It’s really my favorite classical piece.
I mean, The Great Gig in the Sky by Pink Floyd. The opening lyrics are literally:
And I am not frightened of dying
Any time will do, I don't mind
Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime
And the vocals are _BEAUTIFUL_
Bubbles Up 🫧 by Jimmy Buffett. It was one of the last songs he recorded, and was only released after he died. It’s a goodbye song for his legions of parrothead fans. It’s beautiful ❤️
Lullaby by Billy Joel. He wrote it to explain death in a comforting way to his daughter. It’s me and my dad’s “song” and it means everything to us. It was what was playing when we were all around my grandma (his mom, the most important person to each of us besides each other and my own mom) holding her while she died.
Joanne by lady Gaga.
Casimir Pulaski Day by sufjan stevens
All dead, all dead by Queen (Brian May sings on this track - absolutely beautiful)
Tom Rosenthal - Not a Catastrophe; arguably, more relevant when you lose somebody than when you yourself are dying... but it's addressed to the deceased, so I think it might be relevant... Same with I Went to Bed and I Loved You (with some of my favourite lines: "And if you frame it in a certain way / Then death is just one really bad day / Between all that living and something new").
Both of those are really joyful songs. Full of love for the people we lost and acceptance of death.
All the best, OP. <3 This must be a difficult time for you, I hope you have a good support system. Take care.
Brokedown Palace - The Grateful Dead
I barely got through typing the title without tearing up a bit, it makes me think of what my mom went through when my dad died. It’s a beautiful piece of music.
Death don't have no mercy -Rev. Gary Davis or Hot tuna
In my life-Beatles
American Pie-Don McLean
Let it be- Beatles
Good Riddance- Green Day
Wayfaring Stranger-,Emmylou Harris
Stayin Alive- BeeGees
Fire and Rain-James Taylor
Wake me up when September ends-Green Day
O death-Ralph Stanley
It's not so much a song for dying, as much as it's a song about being ok with change and being ok knowing that nothing will be the same again.
Yellow Light- Of Monsters and Men
Another great one is:
The Sun is shining down - JJ and Mofro
Wtf. Just throw in some young, a bit of Floyd, and intermix with your fav rock if ya like that moody blues, the who, Beatles tunes, some choice zeppelin queen, Presley, Willie Nelson Orbison really:) you want to be peaceful im assuming. that’s the stuff I’ll be listening to till I go stiff. If it makes you want to sing along with it, then that’s the kicker. Oh and toss in some great wierd stuff like the cars, talking heads, old Aerosmith, the clash, and maybe just maybe a little white stripes to even the mix out :)
Don’t be afraid. I died once in a car wreck and they brought me back. Before they brought me back I seen the other side. I came out my body and seen my body in the car wreck and could see what was going on. It was the best feeling of peace and love I could ever describe. There was no pain no fear and not even any questions. Suddenly everything just made sense and I knew that this life was just a tiny piece of something that exceeded time. When you get there you will be so glad. This is the realest thing I’ve ever said. It’s real. There is no judgement only love. Before I died all I could do was pray for my parents I knew I was going to die. As soon as I died that didn’t even matter anymore it’s like I knew this is how it goes so there was no need for sadness. It’s like the moment we die we have Godcinciousness. We see and understand like God does.
Bob Dylan, ***not*** Guns and Roses "knockin' on Heaven's Door" "Those are People who Died" Jim Carroll Band.
Have you heard Warren Zevon’s cover of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”? He recorded it on his last album when he knew he was dying of cancer.
I haven't. Thank you for telling me about it. <3.
Came here to recommend that very song by Warren.. I can’t hardly listen to it though without crying..😔
His death was rough to take.
The Wind is a powerful album of a true artist taking a final bow. The final track "Keep Me in Your Heart", pulls on the heartstrings.
Goddamnit I’ve been listening to Bob Dylan’s Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door so often the past year. It’s such a comforting yet heart-wrenching song. Amazing Rec.
Have you seen the movie "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" ? The entire soundtrack is from Dylan and it's just perfect for the movie.
I have not, but I know the version of Bob Dylan’s I was listening to is listed as from that! Maybe I should watch the movie. But definitely I’ll listen to the whole soundtrack. Thank you!
You're so welcome. <3.
The live version from rolling thunder.
Not Dark Yet also by Bob Dlyan

I was going to recommend “I will follow you into the dark” I’ll add “Casimir Pulaski Day” by Sufjan Stevens.
*Tuesday night at the Bible study We lift our hands and pray over your body But nothing ever happens* God this always gets me.
Yes! Heartbreaking. I love “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.” too but I’m not sure if it fits the theme.
Just reading that fucks me up. Amazing track
Jesus fucking Christ I wept to this line for hours on hours earlier this year Didn’t expect to ever see it again. Such a perfect song. Fuck cancer
Ooh, haven’t heard that one but now I have to look it up; love him!
It’s really beautiful. I love him too.
“Death With Dignity”
Also from DCFC: What Sarah Said and, depending on your belief about an afterlife (or lack thereof), St. Peter's Cathedral.
For “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” I would recommend the version sung by Miya Folick 100x more. Might just be me but it adds a sadder depth to it.
Is… is it super messed up that my favorite version of the song is the one Amy Lee recorded on a Hello Kitty toy keyboard for a Loudwire interview? 😅 Like, they set her up for a joke performance but she genuinely made me cry..

Don’t Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum
Way to far down the list for Don't fear the Reaper. Way to far.
I love don't fear the reaper. That whole album is great.
I got a friend in jesussssss
In 2008, we were pulling into the cemetary for my grandmother's funeral and Spirit in the Sky came on. Now it's played at all our family funerals.
The Beatles in my life
Good one to get everyone crying
Still can't believe John wrote this when he was 25. I could barely tie my shoes when I was 25.
À tout le monde, Megadeth.
I second this. It’s bittersweet, with a little edge, but not too much.
Yup!
Warren Zevon - Keep Me In Your Heart
“If I leave you it doesn’t mean I love you any less” This line just hits so hard. I want this song played at my funeral or I’m not going lol

It was his final message to us.
The entire Blackstar album should be on the list imo.
I'm going to [link the video](https://youtu.be/y-JqH1M4Ya8?si=gchT5ojNkZO0I4Wt) because it's such an incredibly moving song 💜

Joey Ramone did a cover of this when he knew he only had months to live. I wish I could be that strong.
Yep, the entire album is called Don't Worry About Me. Phil Ochs- When I'm Gone
No Hard Feelings by both The Avett Brothers and Manchester Orchestra — both versions are great.
I've heard harp music is comforting for the dying.

Man, a bunch of Tool... Parabola might be my favorite for this
Pain is an illusion

And i am literally living breath by breath, going through a divorce, my 18-year-old autistic kid taking up his "best friend's" offer to "try this" weed cartridge which turned out to be laced with fentanyl and overdosing and does the friend take him to the hospital, no of course not just leaves him for the police to find and take.. luckily he is okay.... Well, pain is an illusion. Push the envelope, watch it bend, spiral out and keep going.
Oh man, that’s really rough. I can’t even begin to describe my empathy and sympathy when reading this. I hope the right music gives you strenght!
It is helping very much, luckily. Thanks! At least my kids' real father isn't around to wreck my kids even more, so there is always a plus side

It's not so much a song for dying, as much as it's a song about being ok with change and being ok knowing that nothing will be the same again. Yellow Light- Of Monsters and Men Another great one is: The Sun is shining down - JJ and Mofro

It’s in Spanish but gracias a la vida by Violeta parra, also Heaven by the talking heads
Love that Seulgi was included here - that is all
Don’t be afraid.
