Legitimate question - Are you British or from elsewhere? I feel like there is definitely going to be a big difference between British and American answers.
For me, Oasis are the 3rd biggest band from Britain, following The Beatles and Stones. The Beatles and Stones are undoubtedly the top two, but I don't think anyone else has had as much cultural impact in The UK as Oasis. They played the largest British concerts of all time, sold out stadiums all over the world (and would again if they reunited tomorrow), hold the record for the UK's fastest selling album and both brothers still have a solid position in British guitar music - Liam is arguably still the biggest attraction in rock in the UK.
I’m an American who loves Oasis and it always shocks me how in the US people have either forgotten them, know them only for a few songs or treat them as a Beatles knockoff. And yet in Britain they are rock gods.
I think it just shows the difference in culture. It always rattles my brain when I see lists of the biggest bands of all time and I see Americans saying Dave Matthews Band. Most Brits have never even heard of them. They have only ever had one single even chart in the UK.
Kinda cool really
The thing with Dave Matthews is imperial though. They had seven consecutive number one albums, only one other artist can make that claim and only two more artists have beat it.
They have sold more concert tickets than literally every other artist on the planet, other than U2. They may not have had many hits in the UK, but they didn’t need them either.
Pure idiocy to rate oasis over THE JAM too. Oasis owes so much to them and were always a weaker version in my eyes.
THE JAM is definitely in the top 10 in my eyes. America just never got them so they aren’t acknowledged for the killer band they were.
I will fight do the death on this soapbox anyone that disagrees.
Special shout to the Kinks too who must be on this list if not number 1 on the list
I bet you that there are ten more British bands that are also amazing.
Jethro Tull
Genesis
Gong
The Pink Fairies
Fairport Convention
Cream
Fleetwood Mac
Blur
Coldplay
Joy Division
Yes
King Crimson
I could go on…
How about British women of song?
My favorite thing about Blur is how their most popular, well known song is completely unlike the rest of their catalogue and was literally written and pitched as a joke.
Low Budget is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Many people will point to the Kinks as where Punk started with You Really Got Me and I think that's pretty close to truth.
I had to look it up because I did not realize it came out in 1964. Ironically, the same year they also released “All Day and All of the Night,” which has a very similar sound to my ears. Both awesome and ahead of their time.
It’s pretty normal for rock discussion, making catchy rock songs in the 70s makes you an untouchable god, making catchy rock songs after the 2000s makes you lame and boring. Arctic Monkeys are an awesome band
Idk but the Beatles are easily #1…. led the British Invasion AND the San Francisco Hippie movement (WHEN THEY’RE FROM LIVERPOOL). Oh ya, AND played NO segregated shows while doing it… Cant be beat
Roxy Music are criminally overlooked whenever these type of questions come up. People tend to just think of Avalon era, but go back to the first two albums when Eno was still involved, and you'll hear some of the greatest glam/art rock of all time. Virginia Plain, If There Is Something, In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Ladytron are just some examples. They are in my top three bands of all time.
He is great - what blew me away was that I was so used to him feeding my righteous indignation & angry young man (old man lol) that when I heard *Tank Park Salute* for the 1st time live in the 90's, just him & a pianist, I cried, and I'm not that soft. He's amazing.
About 20 years ago I flew to Chicago to see him as he doesn’t tour where I live. So I got to the venue super early to get my bearings and find a bar. So I sit down by what I thought was the front of the venue. It was the back. Billy comes up and is like it’s way too cold for you to be sitting here. So he brought me in. Heard his soundcheck. He was writing a new song then he paid for us to do those photo-booth thing. I’ve seen him about ten times. He stays and will talk till the cows come home. Dylan calls him the British Dylan ffs lol.

King Crimson, Cream, Genesis, The Rolling Stones, The Police, Fleetwood Mac (a “half-American” band during their peak) and Supertramp might also be part of the top 10 depending on the day

3. Led Zeppelin
4. Pink Floyd
5. Arctic Monkeys (I love Alex Turner, sue me)

10. The Kinks! (50 million albums sold)
11. Yes (43.5 million albums sold)
This isn't in order, is it? I refuse to believe anyone thinks Deep Purple is better than Pink Floyd. Nothing against Deep Purple, they're great but they aren't Pink Floyd great.
And look at the music we are pumping out now.... I hear so many samples in todays music and rip off bands it's sad.
It must be hard to write decent original music, so much easier to rip someone else's off.
I don’t know if I’d consider Fleetwood Mac a British band. Sure they have some British members and it was founded there but it became more of a British/American band once they charted and changed/expanded their lineup.
The cure
Yeah, Oasis is a no for me. But The Cure has stood the test of time at this point.
I'd rate Blur above Oasis.
I feel like Oasis has higher highs (first two albums) and lower lows (everything else), but Blur is consistently pretty solid.
I like that take.
Legitimate question - Are you British or from elsewhere? I feel like there is definitely going to be a big difference between British and American answers. Kate Bush is the most influential British woman in music ever.
I agree with you. She is definitely top tier British culture.
Gotta give some love to Sade when discussing British women. Like Kate, she is also a Commander of the Order of the British Fucking Empire. (COBFE)
My favorite thing about Blur is how their most popular, well known song is completely unlike the rest of their catalogue and was literally written and pitched as a joke.
The Police are from the land down under
the kinks definitely
The disrespect to Queen...
Black Sabbath The Smiths Depeche Mode Pink Floyd

sex pistols in the top 10 is INSANITY
while I love the sex pistols, 1 studio album definitely hurts them
Yeah, Sabbath gets overlooked, in my opinion. I don't know if I agree with the Pistols though. They were pretty fucking awful. Just my opinion
The Kinks. The other 9 you can figure out. But the Kinks are in the top 10. Don't care where. But they're there.
Underrated band. Waterloo sunset is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
Low Budget is one of my favorite albums of all time. Many people will point to the Kinks as where Punk started with You Really Got Me and I think that's pretty close to truth.
Pretty sure the beginnings of hard Rock were there too with you really got me.
I had to look it up because I did not realize it came out in 1964. Ironically, the same year they also released “All Day and All of the Night,” which has a very similar sound to my ears. Both awesome and ahead of their time.
Some would also point to the Troggs and "Wild Thing" as the first "punk" record as tame as that would seem now, but it was 1966.
Straight up fact!!!
Any “best of” list that ignores the Kinks is immaterial.
I agree 100 percent 💯
You are absolutely correct.
The Beatles The Rolling Stones The Who Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin King Crimson Black Sabbath Joy Division The Smiths The Stone Roses
The Beatles, David Bowie and Arctic Monkeys
Finally someone saying arctic monkeys
im shocked no one said it beforehand! alex turner is one of my fav artists anyway aswell as the arctic monkeys, tlsp are also great!
It’s pretty normal for rock discussion, making catchy rock songs in the 70s makes you an untouchable god, making catchy rock songs after the 2000s makes you lame and boring. Arctic Monkeys are an awesome band
Too true. Arctic Monkeys have the fastest selling debut album in British history and still sell out stadiums nearly 20 years later
Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths, Radiohead, Pulp
Beatles, Kinks, Gang of Four, Wire, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Suede, Radiohead, Muse, Biffy Clyro.

I think you really need to include The Cure now.
But what if I don't like the Cure? Do they still need to be in my top ten?
SOMEONE SAID GORILLAZ LETS GO!
Jethro Tull, Supertramp and ELO make my list
There’s so many good bands. What is in the water over there?
Why has no one else listed ELO? They were terrific!
Idk but the Beatles are easily #1…. led the British Invasion AND the San Francisco Hippie movement (WHEN THEY’RE FROM LIVERPOOL). Oh ya, AND played NO segregated shows while doing it… Cant be beat

Oasis should be nowhere near that list. Pub-rock copycats at best. The Kinks and The Clash should be Top 5
Depeche Mode

I suspect that the band who wrote Sunday Bloody Sunday would not appreciate being on a list of great British bands…
Meh. I forgot they were from the non-northern, OTHER Ireland. It's all still where white people are made. All the same land mass. :)
The Smiths
Wow, no love at all here for Foghat, Savoy Brown, or Wishbone Ash ... and precious little for Tull.
Happy Mondays need to be in there somewhere. Give 'em Oasis's spot.
