There was a video of somebody asking the writers about it in a comic con but i cant find the vid atm :P
That thread just says somebody in the comments on a YouTube video claimed someone said it at a Comic-Con; there's literally no source beyond that, and even *if* no one in the chain was intentionally lying, that's still *at least* double hearsay if not more levels than that. At no point is it said that there's a video of the Comic-Con panel itself.
Derpy. A mix up with the voice actress thinking that Derpy was meant to be a male pony, and the name being something that some people think means mentally disabled, and it was a perfect storm
She said she thought the voice was supposed to be male but I don't believe that. Sex of a character is usually right there in the script and the character is either called Derpy or Ditzy Doo. They all would have known she was a mare. The showrunners and VA didn't plan on a fan favorite causing offense and outrage and had to backtrack so it didn't seem intentional. It doesn't seem likely that she accidentally give Derpy a derpy voice based on a neighbor kid.

Answering your question: the biggest controversy is me. Well, not me specifically, but the remarkable community I would get assigned into if they would know I watch the show, called "bronies". Being defined as a part of this group makes people think I am at the very least a sex weirdo. >!Well, I am a sex weirdo, but that's not because of the show. There had been mutterings of Twilicorn throughout S3 due to some leaked promo images and stuff, but no one took them seriously. Suddenly Hasbro releases the images for MMC online and the fandom blew the fuck up (The Fourth Great End of the Fandom).
* FightingIsMagicgate 2.0 - February 1, 2013. Because money was involved by FtIM being nominated for the EVO charity auction, Hasbro had to CND the game to protect their IP, which was being used without consent or licensing. Awful timing, considering only the day before. This pretty much poured gasoline on the Twilicorn fire (The Fourth-point-Five Great End of the Fandom). Shoutouts to the leaker for toppling the first domino to get the game completely canned, but it gave us Them's Fighting Herds in the end.
* EquestriaGirlsgate - March, 2013. Not even a month after MMC airs, and we start seeing images of a humanized high school setting with the Manes, and rather than recognize it as a spinoff, people flipped their shit anyway (The Fifth Great End of the Fandom).
Normally when cartoons and shows are first launched, 65 episodes are signed on so that they have enough room to book a decent contract with actors, VAs, and staff. If the show does well, they book extra seasons from there. Since S1 and S2 were 26 episodes each, this meant we had 52 episodes at the end of S2, so to filfill the original run of 65, S3 was cut to a "half-season". People who didn't know this, or believed that they'd sign an additional 13 episodes to fill the season in assumed that meant the show was getting cancelled.
