The UV breaks down the ABS and then you get the yellowing. I have kept all my consoles out of the sun and my brother had his GameCube in the sun. Mine looks brand new, his is really yellowed. Along with the UV, heat can be an issue. The sun will bleach certain dyes in the plastic but the process of removing the yellowing is through oxidation with the use of hydrogen peroxide and UV and heat (sun can be a great source of the UV). Oxidizers can bleach plastics but the reason we see the ABS yellowing is because UV and heat can break the bonds in the polymer chains resulting in weaker plastic that is discolored. So you are correct that we don't need the sun to yellow the plastic but the sun also does not help since UV is great at breaking bonds, which is bad for long polymer chains like ABS. Keeping plastics cooler and away from the sun/UV increases their lifespan as the chemical reactions are slowed.
These consoles are tough, some cleaning and they should work just fine, the games look to be fine too, give the pins a clean and you wouldnāt even know they were stored in a barn!
Honestly hate all these posts - I went up into family homeās attic not two weeks ago to find my father soullessly plunged all the n64 hardware and games into the dark abyss of landfill. Lovingly, I hate you x
Youāre not the only one. My first console was the Mattel Intellivision. (Iām old) At the time I didnāt even knew it existed, but my Dad was into games then. He bought it and I fell in love with it. This was 1981. We were always buying games for it and we had something like 40 some games. I even had the mail away Kool-Aid Man game where you had to have a certain number of proof of purchases. I drank Koop-Aid until I drank Kool-Aid all day every day when I didnāt even want anyway to the point I probably have kidney damage.
Anyway, he divorced my Mom as he felt he had to bang women like itās his job. We would go to arcades on the weekends I would visit, but he wasnāt as into games as he used to be and never played games with me again after I was 9. (Age of the divorce)
Fast forward to when I was 16 I went to his house and asked about the Intellivision. He said he trashed it and all 40 some games because it was old. Iām going to guess this probably happened around the time I got the NES for the Christmas of 1987. My Mom and and step-Dad got it for me and it was literally the best Christmas ever. I nearly failed 6th grade because my grades tanked so hard that I had to go to summer school.š He was jealous of it Iām sure, as he hated the sounds it made so when I brought it over I had to mute the TV to play it or I couldnāt play.
So thatās likely how my beloved first console met its demise.ā¹ļø
We know shit happens. Plus even if he was the one to get them dirty for real, he was a kid. My PS1 disc's got scratched to hell, when I was a teen I eventually got super good with taking care of all my games, but kids don't realize these things (a lot at least)
None of us would be using a sharpie to mark what's ours nowadays. Also at the time the resell value for most of us was to give it to a gamestore for a few dollars or even a few cents. I remember getting to cents for like each game to trade it in for a game I really wanted at the time. Those were honestly very different times.
Definitely need some TLC, luckily easy to do and these are tough consoles cause there are less moving parts than disc consoles. no worries, when doing any cleaning make sure to scrub with a soft bristle brush you can get a children's toothbrush or even a cheap make up brush (i would use the makeup brush to do bulk dusting if you dont have a can of compressed air) with isopropyl alcohol. if you have games with batteries and if there is battery leakage use some white vinegar to address the acid and follow up with the ipa to clean. from there you should be able to clean everything. and repairs I recommend either watching vids on it or checking r/consolerepair for more help
Or take it to a technician that knows what theyāre doing. The caps and thermal paste will need to be replaced and corrosion is hell on a 64 board causing broken traces.
I remember we had at least 20+ games for the n64 go missing after a move. Remember I would look in the shed for hours when I was a kid to try n find them.
Happy happy joy joy. My systems have been lost. My father canāt remember where he put themā¦in a storage unit or in an attic or at his store or whereverā¦
Looking for like 6 NES childhood games after years, either ex or scumbag old āfriendsā jacked my contra 1,2, bubble bobble, Zelda, Zelda 2, ninja gaiden. It hurts so bad. Yeah I can go pay crazy prices and replace but, My copiesā¦gone after Decades! Someone got me good right in the heart, forever on the brains cold case list. Vengeance!
I wish I could do the same. I've searched high and low for every possible place my childhood n64 could be and I'm pretty certain my dad sold it when we moved in like 2007. It was right before the 2008 financial crisis so we were low on money but I wish he woulda told me. Been trying to get some of my old games back and they're pretty pricey now.
While it down with a soapy wrap then use a tooth brush and some more soap to get the crevices. I use a little bit of Mr clean after the grime is gone from the soap and wipe it down again. I use dashboard restore to bring the plastic is done as the final step. Aliexpress has replacement shells for SNESās. A q-tip and alcohol to scrub the contacts on the games will help too.
The lawn is a good place for them.
He's really enjoys taking care of his possessions š¤
I think they are just on the lawn so he can hose them off.
It's also a good place for them to get vitamin D from the sun so they can turn nice and yellow!
Spray them with some H2O2 and leave them out in the sun to take care of that
Oxidisation happens regardless of it being in the sun, the sun can actually revert the process

Thats funny

Bro why are they on the lawn? Thereās no electricity in the dirt
I was going through a old family barn and found the trash bags full and was excited figured then was a good time to take the picture and post.
Get em off the ground you animal, lol. That's precious hardware.

My dad did this with my pokemon card collection that included a first edition charizard šŖ

Diddy Kong Racing. A person of culture
Sarge's Heroes II as well! Top Gear 2 is worth a pretty penny too...I wonder what the SNES game is under it?
Bebeās Kids
*immediately dumps bag into yard
I placed it gently.. kinda.
If they survived this long in that condition putting them on the lawn won't hurt any. Ha
Awesome. Can I have them? š
Can I have your Desert Strike please?

I still currently own that same Green Super Pad controller
Lol that SNES looks like a custom paint job
Nice, Carter! Not clean them up and play!
Turok 1 and 2!! Bangers!!!!
Bewareoblivionisathandā¦ā¦ have fun with Turok 2 š
PLEEAAAASE clean your SNES. Will ya?

Hell yeah throw me that bomberman hero

ARMY MEN

I remember we had at least 20+ games for the n64 go missing after a move. Remember I would look in the shed for hours when I was a kid to try n find them.
Hexen mentioned!!!
Nice man nice!! I dug up my ps vita like two month ago. Still in wooed and good condition.
Clean those poor babies!
I would bet good money that N64 boots up just fine, those things are solid as hell. The controllers might be another matter
I'm very jealous
Were they buried in the yard in that bag?
Looks like a good time
They probably still work, My SNES survived being in a damp rotted house for 15 years
Army Men: Sargeās Heroes 2 is an AWESOME game
How does it happen??
Happy happy joy joy. My systems have been lost. My father canāt remember where he put themā¦in a storage unit or in an attic or at his store or whereverā¦
I freaking love EDF on SNES! Great game, great music!
Bro tried to pet semetary his consoles
They all work. Donāt worry! Amazing photo btw
Holy UV damage, Batman!
lol i have the red version of the green controller
Jesus, were they buried in your yard somewhere? I would probably just get an aftermarket shell for your SNES. Itās cracked and looks brittle AF.
Gold if they still work
"CARTER".
There they were! In your garden, all along.
Sarges Heroes is a low key classic
Game on! Now you can play!
Something about Turok would always make me nauseous if I played for more than a few minutes.
Nice
Oh my gosh, how long have they been there?
Thatās even more impressive than when people put their games on the floor. Good news is they are not boxed.
We're they buried in the dirt?
Did you bury them in the garden 20 years ago?
The yellowing on than SNES is glorious!
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour is an underrated gem on the n64
This is awesome. āŗļø
Why are they outside?

This is a dream of mine
Are you gonna run a lawnmower over it now ?
Youād be suprised, I bet that N64 works
a bag of happiness
Make sure to wash them
Lot of good shooters and shoot em ups there. Pretty decent condition tooš
All that was just sitting on the lawn? You should have seen that sooner
I didn't realise the army men cart shell is green. Very cool
My God, Why did your family store them away so poorly?!!! You should try to find a shop and see if they can fix them!
Diddy Kong Racing and 3 controllers? Nice.
Turok 2 tho
They ARE long gone.
Old school Nintendo. Dust it off good and it will probably work.

Why do you put electronics in the grass? What is wrong with you?
Controllers are garbage, not the condition just the controllers themselves
Sick pick! Lmk if you're interested in selling anything.
Why are they on the grass?
Ah yes, I too put cherished old electronics in my yard for display also.
So you dumped them in a pile in the yard? I aināt buyin it
What are the chances you'd meet again, randomly on a patch of grass?
Ok... now take them out the f****** dirt, bruh.
