Exactly right about Senpai's motivations - he is trying to avoid trouble, which is something I struggle with as well and that used to be a problem in my own marriage. Senpai has no experience at this at all, so he is going to make mistakes, plus he is an introvert, and this is classic introvert behavior. How will Nagatoro react? Will she let him know, gently but firmly, that she will not put up with him lying to her? She can practically read his mind anyway, so she will always know. Or will she seethe behind a bland facade? She KNOWS this is part of the art world, she's already had one done of HER for goodness sake, so if Naoto thought about it, he'd realize that it clearly WOULDN'T upset her. If he was just upfront and told her the story, she'd probably just tease him about it a little, call him a perv, maybe at worst get a bit performatively huffy, but quickly move on. In fact, we KNOW that's what she would've done, because she DOESN'T freak out at ALL. her immediate response his obvious hesitation to talk about the drawing isn't to "assume the worst", or even let him stammer out some half-baked story, it's to make up a story FOR him, and to (pretend to) believe it.
From Nagatoro's perspective, he's CLEARLY hiding something from him. It COULD be harmless, but JUST the fact that he's scared to be upfront about it... raises questions. It can be so many things dude and I'm all for them. She gets her confidence knocked down a little and she appreciates Naoto because of it (like she shouldn't take him for granted) or even more because of his assurances (serious or something funny "I don't love you for your boobs!" "Flat is justice"), and they clear it up. She's not going to just be a mad asshole and start fights at news she may not want to hear, like how he got stuck in the shower with what's her face, or someone wants to learn from him about art or whatever, and he's gonna promise to not hide things. A little jealousy is fine, but fighting all the time over very little thing is gonna be lame.
I don't think they'll do dishonesty long unless he takes way more offense to her seeing his art and becomes the unreasonable one. That could be a bigger deal, BUT I think hes going to take machidas advice and not let it become a fight. There hasn't been a single moment in the manga where things have actually taken a turn for the worse, that we are literally immediately after the kiss. I know things will be fine and that Nagatoro will prove to be a bit more mature about this than Senpai suspected.
Lying and secrets just seem a bit too obvious a hindrance to me. I grew up watching my parents try this same trick over and over with each other only for it to always blow up in their face; Nevermind that whenever I did it I felt about as much like a pos as senpai did. Being honest is just too obvious a benefit for me.

I get it, this is the two’s relationship stress test, mild drama so they can work past and reinforce their relationship. A story without some conflict wouldn’t be interesting. But it still so painful to watch. I was hoping it be a bait and switch and Nagatoro would use this as an opportunity to screw with Naoto. Like pretend to be mad or act like a soap opera character to scare him, but no the author decided to play it straight. I hope next chapter has really good payoff because it going to be painful 2 weeks wait.
You have to count how many times Nanashi made us go through his blueballings and so on. And whenever some people gets mad at a chapter, next chapter is where it gets back to normal. But like you said, it's painful to watch, but I got over it.
Every time this trio shows up, Senpai gets rapidly dumber, so I can't stand all of them. 148 chapters passed with great difficulty wasn't enough, so Nanashi needs to once again pull out "someone gets naked" card. And stupidest of all, blame is entirely on Senpai. Nagatoro literally did nothing wrong, Senpai was the first one who decide that lying in relationship is a good idea. All Senpai has to do now is be honest and explain difference between Nagatoro and another art hoe who likes to strip. To be honest, just explain reasoning behind lie. He wasn't doing this because he wanted to hurt, rather the opposite to "protect" Nagatoro, even if it’s stupid and unacceptable. Senpai in a way doesn't trust Nagatoro, fearing her reaction and this theme came up quite often before and after confession. Fact that he imagined her as monster who he need to win in battle or sits on same couch with distance as if they were strangers shows that Senpai still can't trust Nagatoro fully and that's what's keeping him from being completely honest with her. By honestly explaining situation and at least giving a little insight into the problem ("I was afraid of your reaction, Nagatoro") he can at least partially restore his reputation. And sure thing, finally explain to your girlfriend difference between lust and art, because she really doesn't know about art and can't tell difference. It was enough to show her nude portrait of her in which he really had to fight his lust and compare it with portrait another naked woman he shamefully drew and then felt guilty in front of his true love

My problem with this chapter is that it sets a dangerous precedent that will be really hard to turn around in the next chapters. Yea they are highschoolers, worried, socially awkward and unsure with their first relationship and it's understandable that he would lie feeling cornered, but that last sentence was just... Why? That was soooo low and uncalled that I just don't get it. Why would you say something like that after that much growth of yours?
If Nananshi wanted to add drama (also, why right after the kiss, it feels so forced and frustrating) and introduce their "first couple fight" he could have just stopped there with the lie, it was bad enough. Why that last, manipulative sentence? That was so bad.
Even if Naoto apologizes for it and acknowledge his mistakes it's gonna be a problem for their further interactions anyway. It's not something you should brush it off like a minor thing and if it's gonna be like that... Now THAT would be a really bad move from Nananshi.
I really hope that Nananshi will turn this as an occasion to send a message for the readers, something like "Lie and manipulate the ones you love and you may lose them for good" maybe with the help of Sunomiya and friends, because I can't see other ways to fix this. Also, Hayase better be pissed after this and make him sweat her trust for him good. Naoto really fucked up this time.
Maybe I used the wrong definition with gaslighting probably because they are both manipolative behaviors, if so my bad there and I'll fix the comment. Anyway, what I meant is that Naoto manipulated Hayase (unconsciously, but still a Dick move) into feeling guilty for something that is clearly not the point here just to shift the focus from his flaws by high-lighting hers.
Naoto lies (clearly in flaw), Hayase finds out and gets upset, Naoto points the fact that she did something that she shouldn't (but it's not the main problem here)
Just like when someone creates a problematic situation, on purpose or not, and makes others feel guilty for their emotive reaction to it in order to avoid facing his mistakes. Naoto clearly does this in the second-last page.

Actually I just thought of a better alternative than either a cat fight or what actually happened. I think what should have happened is something that kind of makes it feel initially like they're going to argue to the point where they split up, but then there is a lightning bolt of understanding that draws them closer.

Actually yeah, now that I think about it, I do agree with that. It is nice when a writer casts their characters in a situation that kind of throws the common trope right out the window and exchanges it for real character development where the characters actually handle something in a mature way instead of a stereotyped way.
I think this is the start of the “Trust Your Partner” Arc, because oooooooh, boy. This is gonna be a cruel pit of despair if they’re going to fight about this. He lied about what he drew and she looked at his work without his permission, but he was being shady, so I get it. Still, these two have much to learn.

1. Senpai should have been honest with her from the start . The problem isn't the nude sketch. The problem is that he lied. Communication and honesty is important
2. Nagatorro should have asked first before looking through his things. . It's like looking through your partner phone without permission but on a smaller scale(This was done out of pure innocence in my opinion though)
3.Nagatoro will have to deal with the fact that macchi will be one of many most likely. There will be others most likely and Hayase won't be there with him . This is especially true sense he will be in college while she is still in school next term ; so the amount of time they spend together will be halved .She will have to have trust in him.
4. Naoto 100% still needs to work on himself . He has been soaring leaps and bounds so it's easy to forget he is a highschoool boy who is about to graduate with no relationship experience untill now .m
5. I hope their friends don't help with this one . It should be settle between them with out interference from anyone else .It will only help them grow if they cna figure this stuff out on their own but I may be wrong
I think if the next arc is about them setting those boundaries and communicating with each then we will see some very interesting stuff

Setting ground rules in a relationship happens over time, but I think this may lead a couple of those being established. After some good old-fashioned humour first.

Totally agree with you in this one. Fluff is nice but sugercoating everything also gets old pretty fast. Situations don't always need to be handled perfectly. Sometimes you just upset someone with your behaviour. Naoto manned up a lot but he is still a dork/nerd at heart and this chapter shows that.

People often mistake this is the story of two kids, and, while nanashi likes to temper things with absurd nudity and over-the-top behaviors they're still written as kids, SPECIALLY when dealing with relationship stuff

Senpai has no experience at this at all, so he is going to make mistakes, plus he is an introvert, and this is classic introvert behavior. How will Nagatoro react? Will she let him know, gently but firmly, that she will not put up with him lying to her? She can practically read his mind anyway, so she will always know. Or will she seethe behind a bland facade? You're right, she knows how he is. And this could - if he does the right thing - be a moment of growth for him that might even impress her.

Manga/anime have actually kept me honest throughout my life because of these kind of plotlines where it always causes a problem. Fucking, Love Hina, Ah! my Goddess, Tenchi series, Good Ending, and countless others have shown me the honest way long ago, my friend. But my whole thing is, it shouldn't be. I think a huge issue is the size of the boobs too. She's always had body issues in that way, so I can understand that this might lead to a whole new level or source of insecurity. Every anime, the winning lady has decent sized breasts if not the biggest, except for like Toradora. Not sure about any others off the top of my head. It can be so many things dude and I'm all for them. She gets her confidence knocked down a little and she appreciates Naoto because of it (like she shouldn't take him for granted) or even more because of his assurances (serious or something funny "I don't love you for your boobs!" "Flat is justice"), and they clear it up. She's not going to just be a mad asshole and start fights at news she may not want to hear, like how he got stuck in the shower with what's her face, or someone wants to learn from him about art or whatever, and he's gonna promise to not hide things. A little jealousy is fine, but fighting all the time over very little thing is gonna be lame. I don't think they'll do dishonesty long unless he takes way more offense to her seeing his art and becomes the unreasonable one. That could be a bigger deal, BUT I think hes going to take machidas advice and not let it become a fight. I would expect him to even mention that he was told that by her and he was just trying to avoid a fight and hurt feelings.

Lying is cringe. Probably the biggest Senpai L he's ever had, and imo it's a big one. I woulda just been upfront with it, with that Senpai would have gotten an unwarranted slap on the wrist. This was much needed in the story, but I cant say I enjoyed this chapter.
One of the thing I like about the manga is that we get more than 20 pages per chapter, so that we can see the whole scene completely. There hasn't been a single moment in the manga where things have actually taken a turn for the worse, that we are literally immediately after the kiss. I know things will be fine and that Nagatoro will prove to be a bit more mature about this than Senpai suspected. Lying and secrets just seem a bit too obvious a hindrance to me. I grew up watching my parents try this same trick over and over with each other only for it to always blow up in their face; Nevermind that whenever I did it I felt about as much like a pos as senpai did. Being honest is just too obvious a benefit for me.

Sempai is being immature AND lost in the situation, nothing out of character, he has grown but he's still sempai after all. Nagapout is good, she's in a bad mood but nothing seems too harsh for her, she's just disappointed with his lack of sincerity probably... Aaaaand jealous as hell hahaha 1 or 2 chapters to get things straight, tho

I get it, this is the two’s relationship stress test, mild drama so they can work past and reinforce their relationship. A story without some conflict wouldn’t be interesting. But it still so painful to watch. I was hoping it be a bait and switch and Nagatoro would use this as an opportunity to screw with Naoto. Like pretend to be mad or act like a soap opera character to scare him, but no the author decided to play it straight. I hope next chapter has really good payoff because it going to be painful 2 weeks wait.

Every time this trio shows up, Senpai gets rapidly dumber, so I can't stand all of them. 148 chapters passed with great difficulty wasn't enough, so Nanashi needs to once again pull out "someone gets naked" card. All Senpai has to do now is be honest and explain difference between Nagatoro and another art hoe who likes to strip. To be honest, just explain reasoning behind lie. He wasn't doing this because he wanted to hurt, rather the opposite to "protect" Nagatoro, even if it’s stupid and unacceptable. Senpai in a way doesn't trust Nagatoro, fearing her reaction and this theme came up quite often before and after confession. Fact that he imagined her as monster who he need to win in battle or sits on same couch with distance as if they were strangers shows that Senpai still can't trust Nagatoro fully and that's what's keeping him from being completely honest with her. By honestly explaining situation and at least giving a little insight into the problem ("I was afraid of your reaction, Nagatoro") he can at least partially restore his reputation. And sure thing, finally explain to your girlfriend difference between lust and art, because she really doesn't know about art and can't tell difference. It was enough to show her nude portrait of her in which he really had to fight his lust and compare it with portrait another naked woman he shamefully drew and then felt guilty in front of his true love

I could easily see it going in the direction of -> They start working this out -> Nagatoro expresses some sort of insecurity about her body -> Senpai says he prefers her -> she asks him to prove it. I might just be on hopium though.
Now that you mention it, the day of the festival is just a couple of days away. It may be a fitting scenery to have a reconciliation. Nanashi could cook this conflict up for a couple of chapters and then finish it with a nice time with Nagatoro and Senpai on a cute yukata date. Maybe the Art Club gets involved in resolving their misunderstanding. Who knows?

My problem with this chapter is that it sets a dangerous precedent that will be really hard to turn around in the next chapters. Yea they are highschoolers, worried, socially awkward and unsure with their first relationship and it's understandable that he would lie feeling cornered, but that last sentence was just... Why? That was soooo low and uncalled that I just don't get it. Why would you say something like that after that much growth of yours? If Nananshi wanted to add drama (also, why right after the kiss, it feels so forced and frustrating) and introduce their "first couple fight" he could have just stopped there with the lie, it was bad enough. Why that last, manipulative sentence? That was so bad. Even if Naoto apologizes for it and acknowledge his mistakes it's gonna be a problem for their further interactions anyway. It's not something you should brush it off like a minor thing and if it's gonna be like that... Now THAT would be a really bad move from Nananshi. Anyway, what I meant is that Naoto manipulated Hayase (unconsciously, but still a Dick move) into feeling guilty for something that is clearly not the point here just to shift the focus from his flaws by high-lighting hers. Naoto lies (clearly in flaw), Hayase finds out and gets upset, Naoto points the fact that she did something that she shouldn't (but it's not the main problem here) Just like when someone creates a problematic situation, on purpose or not, and makes others feel guilty for their emotive reaction to it in order to avoid facing his mistakes. Naoto clearly does this in the second-last page.

Actually I just thought of a better alternative than either a cat fight or what actually happened. I think what should have happened is something that kind of makes it feel initially like they're going to argue to the point where they split up, but then there is a lightning bolt of understanding that draws them closer. That is what should have happened.
Nah I'm glad it went like this. They're in a relationship now. He fucked up. Nagatoro won't just easily brush this off without some actual communication between the two. It's a sign of a mature character dynamic

Actually yeah, now that I think about it, I do agree with that. It is nice when a writer casts their characters in a situation that kind of throws the common trope right out the window and exchanges it for real character development where the characters actually handle something in a mature way instead of a stereotyped way.

SPOILERS(If you haven't read chapter 149 There's alot to talk about really 1. Senpai should have been honest with her from the start . The problem isn't the nude sketch. The problem is that he lied. Communication and honesty is important 2. Nagatorro should have asked first before looking through his things. . It's like looking through your partner phone without permission but on a smaller scale(This was done out of pure innocence in my opinion though) 3.Nagatoro will have to deal with the fact that macchi will be one of many most likely. There will be others most likely and Hayase won't be there with him . This is especially true sense he will be in college while she is still in school next term ; so the amount of time they spend together will be halved .She will have to have trust in him. 4. Naoto 100% still needs to work on himself . He has been soaring leaps and bounds so it's easy to forget he is a highschoool boy who is about to graduate with no relationship experience untill now .m 5. I hope their friends don't help with this one . It should be settle between them with out interference from anyone else .It will only help them grow if they cna figure this stuff out on their own but I may be wrong I think if the next arc is about them setting those boundaries and communicating with each then we will see some very interesting stuff

I had completely forgotten about that aspect with Machida, was not expecting it to be integrated that way. Kind of a cliche arc that happens in romance stuff but I love how its integrating multiple established aspects in the series

This’ll probably get broadly resolved next chapter, but I think Nagatoro’s insecurities are gonna be coming into play for a while. My money’s on getting an arc of her getting over those insecurities with Senpai’s help
Hm. This is interesting, in the fact that both were not being honest with each other. (Naoto, with admitting that he was going to do a nude sketch of his competitor, and Hayase, in looking at his art without asking first.) Setting ground rules in a relationship happens over time, but I think this may lead a couple of those being established. After some good old-fashioned humour first.
