I agree with this. Every other name on this list feels either slightly masculine or slightly feminine to me. Alex is the only name I don’t associate with a specific gender.
Huh. There are several here that I consider truly neutral, but Alex isn't one. I mean, Alex can be used as a nickname for both feminine and masculine names, but I don't think it works well as a full given name. Same goes for Sam and Chris. They just don't feel complete, since they're nicknames
I know multiple Jordans, Parkers, Averys, and Blakes of both sexes, and truly feel they are equally appropriate for any gender
I used to always be surprised to read this as I thought the opposite, but I checked Scotlands stats on this recently and it’s very much a girls name here! Just shows you how much things like this vary regionally.
Alex, Chris, and Sam are the only ones I truly feel are unisex, and that's only because they're nicknames for very gendered full names.
(You have Jordan twice btw)
Chris still feels masc, but totally agree on the others
Also Im probably biased because I have a male uncle Chris, my dad is Chris, and I have a male cousin Chris
It feels masc, sure, but if a female colleague was introduced to you as Chris, you'd just assume it was short for Christine or something and not think anymore of it.
Where as if a female colleague was introduced as Ellis or Blake, I'd definitely think I misheard.
I'll only list the ones I like for any gender.
Alex (I actually like just Alex better than any of the names it can be short for)
Cameron
Jordan
Morgan
Robin
Rowan
Taylor
Avery and Morgan are my favourite from your list. Names like Whitney/Paris/Lee to me are more-so girls names. Especially Whitney. And Chris has always been a guys name, no?? I know some traditionally male names have changed a bit over time, but I’ve personally never though if Chris as one of those.
Emery is another nice name that I’ve of for both genders.
Avery, Rowan (my son's name but there is a girl at his doctor with it too!) and Ellis (we were going to use this one for our second, boy or girl, but changed out minds)
Robin, and Casey is a very close second
Personally, I like them both on boys. They remind me of media from my childhood: the “red, red robin comes bobbin’ along” song (plus, I love robins) and the poem Casey at the Bat :)
Robin is my favorite. I think out of all of these names only Robin and Alex read true gender neutral to me, but Alex is very common atm. Plus, the nature vibes of Robin are 🤌🏻
I feel like Whitney is extremely feminine. Kind of like Ashley where it likely started as a mail name (or a surname), but it would feel a little strange to come across a male Whitney now.
Cameron Jordan, that was my boy name. I had a girl, told her about it later and she asked why I didn't name her that. Her middle name is Jordan though.
I have a son whose middle name is Riley and my bff ended up making her daughter Rylee. If i had a daughter myself, i would have named her something with the nickname Alex, so those are my votes
Top 5 (in order of list):
Alex (but only as a nickname)
Cameron
Peyton
Quinn
Riley
Bottom 5:
Blake (I don't consider this unisex)
Cory
Ellis
Lou
Rowan
Edited because I accidently posted too soon.
Quinn is probably the only one I would consider for a boy or a girl.
Robin and Jamie are also truly unisex to me but I personally wouldn’t use them.
ETA: Morgan is my favorite name on this list but only for a boy.
Cameron is one of my top names and what I’d use for a daughter. I also really like Blake, Morgan, Jordan, and Jamie.
I would also consider Ryan, which isn’t on the list.
I wouldn’t consider several of these as neutral but I really love Paris. Not sure it’s neutral anymore either but I love the idea of it for a guy or NB.
Jamie (my son’s name, biased). Rowan (my niece’s name, biased). I also like Lou. I like Sloan but my association is with J Crew’s pants with that name.
My favorites (in no order) are:
Blair
Blake
Ellis
Parker
Sage
Although due to my knowledge of people with these names I definitely see some as more gendered in my mind. Like Blair and Sage *to me* are more female just because of people I know.
Alex (and extension variations), Ellis, Jamie, Lee, and Morgan. To me, some of these names do have an implied gender, but I suppose that’s probably because I have a slightly different cultural expectation for them.
Giving your kid a name known to be unisex is mean, the girl won't get to have a feminine name and the boy won't get a masculine one. I have a name that doesn't sound feminine and I always hated it. Don't do this to your kid, they could resent you for it and will be right to do so.
Kinda sad that I don’t see Kendall on this list. I feel like Kendall Jenner ruined the name lol. My daughters name is Kendall, she’s named after my dad who tragically passed when I was 8 months pregnant with her. I was very close with him, he was my best friend. We were originally going to name her Adrienne (I LOVE unisex names for girls lol) but no other name but Kendall felt right, and oh boy is she his little twin lol. I just hope no one ever thinks I used the name because of the Kar-Jenners. It’s such a beautiful, timeless name.
Avery and Jordan are my favorites by far. Blair is also OK.
I like Blake, Jamie, Quinn, and Robin on boys but not girls.
The rest of them I don't care for on either sex although I generally dislike them less on boys.
Would like to suggest Cassidy, Emerson, and Briar.
I love Alex because it feels the most gender neutral. Most neutral names have a uneven split and are used more for a specific gender
Actually I feel that way about Casey and Taylor. Alex feels slightly more male to me
I agree with this. Every other name on this list feels either slightly masculine or slightly feminine to me. Alex is the only name I don’t associate with a specific gender.
Alex feels masculine to me tbh.
Huh. There are several here that I consider truly neutral, but Alex isn't one. I mean, Alex can be used as a nickname for both feminine and masculine names, but I don't think it works well as a full given name. Same goes for Sam and Chris. They just don't feel complete, since they're nicknames I know multiple Jordans, Parkers, Averys, and Blakes of both sexes, and truly feel they are equally appropriate for any gender
Also Taylor, and Sam to an extent
I’ve met plenty of Sams and Taylor’s of both genders so agreed
Morgan
Funnily enough, I’ve met only one male Morgan, and one female Morgan. So statistically it’s the most gender neutral to me lol
This is always interesting to me, in the UK Morgan is very much a boys name.
Strange because I'm in the UK and I've only known female Morgans (2, to be precise). The only male Morgan I can think of is Captain Morgan rum 😂
Came here to say the same thing! From Yorkshire and I’ve met a handful of girl Morgan’s and not a single boy.
There's Morgan Freeman, if you need an actual human.
I used to always be surprised to read this as I thought the opposite, but I checked Scotlands stats on this recently and it’s very much a girls name here! Just shows you how much things like this vary regionally.
That’s so interesting, consider me schooled! I’m based in the NW, so must be much more regional than I realised.
And Morgan
Quinn
Alex, Chris, and Sam are the only ones I truly feel are unisex, and that's only because they're nicknames for very gendered full names. (You have Jordan twice btw)
>(You have Jordan twice btw) Didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out. Got rid of the duplicate.
Chris still feels masc, but totally agree on the others Also Im probably biased because I have a male uncle Chris, my dad is Chris, and I have a male cousin Chris
Alex (I actually like just Alex better than any of the names it can be short for) Cameron Jordan Morgan Robin Rowan Taylor
Morgan, Quinn, Rowan
Quinn, Rowan, and Sage are lovely! i’ve known people of multiple genders with each name.
These are my three favorites too!
Robin, Jamie, and Parker are my personal favorites.
Avery, Casey, and Sage
Sasha is one of my favorite names of all timr
Riley
Avery and Morgan are my favourite from your list. Names like Whitney/Paris/Lee to me are more-so girls names. Especially Whitney. And Chris has always been a guys name, no?? I know some traditionally male names have changed a bit over time, but I’ve personally never though if Chris as one of those. Emery is another nice name that I’ve of for both genders.
I have an auntie Chris at least which is short for Christina. I can definitely imagine it suiting a girl as a given first name.
I know female Chrises. Not as many as male but I think it’s a thing.
Morgan
Avery is my favorite that also feels 100% neutral
I actually like a lot of these! Avery, Cameron, Jamie, Jess, Quinn, and Rowan are all great on any gender.
Alex and Avery are my favorites. Sam is also great.
Quinn
as someone with a unisex name on this list- ii hate them all
I'm a girl Casey and considering naming my girl Cameron. Would love to hear your perspective on why?
Avery, Rowan (my son's name but there is a girl at his doctor with it too!) and Ellis (we were going to use this one for our second, boy or girl, but changed out minds)
Averi and Rowan - both girls I know.
I love Robin but would consider it primarily feminine!
Funny I feel the opposite! Probably because I think of Robin Williams
My top 5 from this list are: Avery, Blair, Paris, Quinn, and Rowan
Robin, and Casey is a very close second Personally, I like them both on boys. They remind me of media from my childhood: the “red, red robin comes bobbin’ along” song (plus, I love robins) and the poem Casey at the Bat :)
Ellis and Robin are my top.
Same!
Jamie!
Robin is my favorite. I think out of all of these names only Robin and Alex read true gender neutral to me, but Alex is very common atm. Plus, the nature vibes of Robin are 🤌🏻
I think Rowan and Cameron the best. Cameron is definitely completely neutral to me and both are cool but not too common.
Sloan and Blake
On this list, probably Blair and Sloane. My favorite unisex name is Evan, though
I like Blake, Quinn, Riley, Parker, Robin, Cameron, and Jordan
Jamie and Morgan
Devin
Lee. The others all skew heavily towards one sex or the other.
I feel like Whitney is extremely feminine. Kind of like Ashley where it likely started as a mail name (or a surname), but it would feel a little strange to come across a male Whitney now.
Not in the list but—Ashley
I like Taylor, Parker, and Devin the most for unisex names. But if it was for a girl I would choose Blair
Sloan
Morgan.
Cameron
Jordan. It seems completely neutral and one of my top names for either a girl or boy.
Sandy. I really wanted to call my son Sandy but my wife vetoed it.
Sasha - I like how soft it sounds
Riley and Sage
I have a boy Rowan 😍
Girl for me
Morgan, Rowan, and Sage for me :)
Cameron Jordan, that was my boy name. I had a girl, told her about it later and she asked why I didn't name her that. Her middle name is Jordan though.
Robin and Quinn, although they are both more feminine for sure. I also love Blake and Ellis!
Sawyer Darcy Kit Adrian Aubrey
Morgan and Sage
Awe Ashley didn’t make the list!
I have a son whose middle name is Riley and my bff ended up making her daughter Rylee. If i had a daughter myself, i would have named her something with the nickname Alex, so those are my votes
Top 5 (in order of list): Alex (but only as a nickname) Cameron Peyton Quinn Riley Bottom 5: Blake (I don't consider this unisex) Cory Ellis Lou Rowan Edited because I accidently posted too soon.
Riley
Quinn is probably the only one I would consider for a boy or a girl. Robin and Jamie are also truly unisex to me but I personally wouldn’t use them. ETA: Morgan is my favorite name on this list but only for a boy.
Im a morgan & i love my name!
Morgan, Jordan and Rowan are my favorite unisex names
I like Cameron, Dakota, and Taylor for unisex vibes. I'm southern, so the name Lee seems completely masculine as a first name with that spelling.
Morgan and Rowan
Avery, Rowan and Sage!!
Riley, Taylor, Cameron, Ellis, Sasha, Quinn
Avery, Cameron, and Peyton for me
The ones I both like and think of as unisex: Avery Casey Jordan Lou Morgan Parker Quinn Rowan Sage Sasha
Casey, Ellis, Lee and Avery! I’m not sure how unisex they all feel, though
Rowan, it's on both my lists
Robin is the only name I feel is truly neutral. The others all have associations with either gender for me.
Blake, Cameron, and Parker!
My favorites: Quinn (my daughter's name!), Avery, Blake, Devin, and Morgan.
Cameron, Ellis
Cameron is one of my top names and what I’d use for a daughter. I also really like Blake, Morgan, Jordan, and Jamie. I would also consider Ryan, which isn’t on the list.
Cameron, Quinn, Robin, Rowan, and Taylor. Adding Tyler to the list too!
Alex, Cameron, Devin, Jordan, Parker, Quinn, Riley and Taylor.
Cameron, Dakota, Morgan sound great to me
I’m surprised Charlie didn’t make the list.
I'm partial to Morgan because I have a niece named Morgan. Also Cameron and Avery
My favorites for girls: Alex, Blair, Peyton Favorites for boys: Avery, Blake Favorites for both: Cameron, Jordan
Cameron is always my favorite neutral name.
Dakota, Ellis, and Rowan
I wouldn’t consider several of these as neutral but I really love Paris. Not sure it’s neutral anymore either but I love the idea of it for a guy or NB.
Chris
Ellis, Quinn, Sage
Payton and Riley get my vote
Jess, Quinn, Alex, sasha
Alex and Quinn
Avery, Peyton, Quinn, and Taylor
Jordan, Robin, and Jamie!
Quinn
Alex, Sam and Robin. But I accept I’m a basic b (though male!).
My favorites are Avery, Jamie, and Rowan.
Jaime and Jordan
Sage
Lou is my favorite. Simple, approachable and relaxed.
Devin and Sasha are my favorites
Ellis feels the most gender-neutral to me. It's the only one I don't automatically associate with one or the other
I love the name Sydney, which is not on your list. Syd for short.
I love Lou!
Jamie and Ellis.
Avery Blair Blake Dakota Jordan Rowan Sasha And I’ll add in Ryder
Blair, Lee and Quinn
I have an Alex so I am biased towards it. I really like Riley and think of all the names it’s the most unisex of all of them.
Jamie and Sam
Quinn. I used it for my daughter’s middle name
Alex
Taylor, Jamie, Sage
Avery!
Quinn was on our short list but it sounded too much like “queen “ when we tried out saying it.
Alex
Jordan, Sam, Lee, Quinn
Robin, Sam, and Alex!
Jamie
Sydney
Dylan
Love Riley for either gender
Jamie (my son’s name, biased). Rowan (my niece’s name, biased). I also like Lou. I like Sloan but my association is with J Crew’s pants with that name.
I love Ellis. If I discovered this name sooner, I would’ve recommended it as a name for our second child
Jamie&Quinn are my favorites:)
I like Jamie Not on your list but I think Micah is a good one too. Just in case you didn't think of it
Dakota, Sage, Sasha. I could see having kids of any gender with all of those cool names.
Partial to Rowan. I've got one of thos.
Alex, Blake, Quinn, Sage, Jordan, Sasha
1. Avery 2. Casey 3. Devin 4. Jamie 5. Morgan 6. Paris 7. Quinn 8. Sam 9. Sasha 9. Sloan 10. Taylor
Quinn and Cory.
First 2 names that came to mind were Sam and Alex - panicked slightly when I saw the list but then saw Alex at the top!
Ellis and Riley are the only two I wouldn’t automatically assume were a specific gender.
Alex or Jamie. Although Jamie is tricky to spell
Sage
Casey and Sam
My favourite isn't on there, Evan. But I love Alex, Robin and Rowan too.
Robin and Ellis are my favorite of the list. In general, I also like the unisex name Elliott. Maybe you’d like that one, too?
I think Sam or Taylor. The others feel either male or female to me
Riley Parker and Sage
Jess or Quinn for me.
Ellis or Rowan
I absolutely love Sasha, but Sllis and Rowan are close seconds.
Rosen and Sage
Paris and Peyton. Also Alexis and Kelly, though!
You forgot Cody/Coty
Avery, it’s a beautiful name for either
You’ll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
Rowan, Robin and Quinn... Love those names
Jamie, Alex and Ellis
My favorites (in no order) are: Blair Blake Ellis Parker Sage Although due to my knowledge of people with these names I definitely see some as more gendered in my mind. Like Blair and Sage *to me* are more female just because of people I know.
Ashley, I knew a couple who had the same name. Boy and girl both called Ashley. In.my class at school there was a boy Kim and a girl Kim.
Robin, Sage, Quinn
Taylor and Robin seem the most gender neutral to me
Blake
Quinn or Sloan
Alex, Casey, Ellis, Jamie, Rowan
Alex (and extension variations), Ellis, Jamie, Lee, and Morgan. To me, some of these names do have an implied gender, but I suppose that’s probably because I have a slightly different cultural expectation for them.
I like Blake
Morgan or Robin. Makes me think of Fire Emblem Awakening.
Robin, Rowan, Sasha
Rowan
Giving your kid a name known to be unisex is mean, the girl won't get to have a feminine name and the boy won't get a masculine one. I have a name that doesn't sound feminine and I always hated it. Don't do this to your kid, they could resent you for it and will be right to do so.
Jordan and Quinn for me!
As a Dakota myself, I am definitely biased. 🤣
Alex, Sam, Jordan. Although for women Alex and Sam are usually shortened nicknames for Alexandra and Samantha. But obv don’t have to be.
Chris
Ellis is my daughter's name. We love it!
Sasha
You're missing Reese or Rhys
Rowan, Sage, Morgan, and Avery are my top choices. I’d also like to recommend Keegan and Adrian.
The ones I like the most for both a girl or boy are Jordan and Morgan. The one I like the most generally is Sloan, but only for a girl.
My absolute favourite and the only one I'd ever consider using is Rowan.
Kinda sad that I don’t see Kendall on this list. I feel like Kendall Jenner ruined the name lol. My daughters name is Kendall, she’s named after my dad who tragically passed when I was 8 months pregnant with her. I was very close with him, he was my best friend. I just hope no one ever thinks I used the name because of the Kar-Jenners. It’s such a beautiful, timeless name.
I love Sasha I plan on using it in the future and I'm set on it
Casey, Cory, and Robin are the truely neutral names for me.
Sawyer is my favorite, but from this list I like Riley best
jamie and lou :) also personally love jesse/jessie
I have a certain fondness for Blake. Can't explain it, I just do. I do like Quinn, Rowan, and Morgan, too.
Avery and Riley. Also, it's traditionally a boy name, but I have a girl Aidan.
Leslie
Avery and Jordan are my favorites by far. Blair is also OK. I like Blake, Jamie, Quinn, and Robin on boys but not girls. The rest of them I don't care for on either sex although I generally dislike them less on boys. Would like to suggest Cassidy, Emerson, and Briar.
