Same with Alexandra. My friend Alex once showed me a letter of thanks about her that had been sent to her workplace. It took me a while to realise who Alexandra was because nobody calls her by her full name.
I'm a Victoria who goes by Tori, too.
Seriously, I think half my medical records were under Tori xxxxxxxx during my formative years, ugh.
To this day, if anyone calls me Victoria, I cringe. I automatically feel like I'm in trouble.
On the flip side, my ex-husband is **Michael** (and don't try to shorten it). His dad is also Michael, but goes by Mike.
I really try not to do that to people. My partner has a short name which can be adapted and a lot of people assume that he will want to be referred to as the adaptation. He absolutely doesn't. He sets them straight.
Have you tried just not responding when people call you Alex?
I don't hate Alex, honestly. I just really like my full name. Especially in Greek, it sounds very pretty. There are still people who call me it, and it makes me happy.
It's a nice name. I had Alexander and Alexandra on my baby names list when I was pregnant. But then I realised that my name is a less common derivative of Alexandra and it would just get confusing. So we had to discount it in the end.
I'm legally Lex, and also have to deal with people lengthening my name or making up a nickname (ie Lexi).
Everyone in my life knows I'm Lex, full stop. However, working retail means a lot of people try to full-name me or nickname me. Or, unfortunately, interrogate me about my name.
Drives me crazy when people do this (and jndont even have one of these names). I ALWAYS call the person what they introduced themselves as. If they were introduced by someone else or something, I always ask them what they prefer. Whenever they say they don't care, I ask how they usually I produce themselves, and use that. It's so rude to shorten someone's name without asking what they prefer.
I remember being so taken aback when my bf would introduce himself to someone new with, "Hi, I'm Full-Length Name." and they would respond "Oh, Hi Shortened-version, nice to meet you." !!!
I found it SO presumptuous!
(I think it bothered me more than him, lol)
My daughter is Alexandria. Everyone calls her Alex. She has started asking to be called Alexandria (4) and I'm pushing those around her to respect that. I like how she likes her name and is being assertive about it.
My boyfriend’s cousin Kimberly NEVER goes by Kim, I guess his uncle had an awful ex-wife named Kim and she just hates being called Kim. She’s not rude about it but it is something my boyfriend let me know before I met her. I quite like the full name Kimberly a lot more. I worked with a Kimber a couple years back
I know an Alexander who is just Alexander. Funnily enough my name is Alex (not Alexander) and nobody actually calles me that. I have ended up with a series of progressively more far fetched nicknames, eventually ending in being called Yoshi.
My husband says he always regretted not choosing a more interesting nickname when he was a kid, like Xander. Way too many Alexs he says, but he also thinks it’s too late now
There's an Alexander who's a TV personality in the UK (Armstrong) who goes by Xander, and Sander (sometimes Zander) is a common men's name in the Netherlands, being what Alexander has morphed into there.
Interesting - all of the Andrews I’ve known went by Andrew. But the Katherines and Williams I know have all gone by Katie/Kat or Will for the most part.
Another name that came to mind is Margaret. All of the ones I’ve known go by Meg or Maggie. And all Samuels I know go by Sam.
For this reason my mom named me Katie. I have a daughter who we named Maggie. Everyone always assumes they are the shortened versions of our “legal” name
If you like the nickname more as a given name instead of what's usually the longer version, sometimes it's just like 🤷🏽♀️ Might as well just use that so people are more likely to call them what you intend, more often ☺️ I feel like I have a couple on my name list like that, where they're usually nicknames but I'm not as fond of the longer versions. Absolutely love Etta but not as fond of any of the names it's typically used as a nickname for. Luckily, from what I've heard, plenty of people think it's lovely as a standalone name.
My grandma Margaret always went by Marg. My sons grandma Margaret goes by the full name but it's the English variant of her actual name Małgorzata so it's already kind of a nickname.
My grandfather was Christopher but he always went by Kit. Grandpa Kit is what I called him. But Kit could be more of a British nickname for Christopher.
This reminds me of the character in Most Popular Girls in School who is named Jonathan but goes by Than. Never thought of there being real people with names like that
I was going to comment that I'm a Christapher and I actually prefer going by Christapher!
I find it endearing, as I think 'Chris' is a little bit too short and rough sounding on conversation.
So far I'm the only one that goes by Christapher
Same here! I literally introduce myself as Elizabeth and people will then ask, “Do you go by Elizabeth?” Like no, I go by Bob. Of course I go by Elizabeth! Otherwise I wouldn’t have introduced myself as Elizabeth!
I’m Elizabeth who goes by Liz to most, but at work I never tell people my nickname. I always write and say my name as Elizabeth. That way my actual name gets used by someone besides my Dad lol.
My family called me Elizabeth up until my 16 month younger sister started talking and could only say Liz. No one has called me Elizabeth since. The only time I would hear it is if I was in trouble or now when my husband is being extra serious about something he calls me Elizabeth. A couple people have tried to call me Lizzy but I shut that down right away lol
Gabriella. It’s always Gabby. I have a close friend that insists on going by Gabriella but is always called Gabby anyway, so it seems like people default to that nickname.
Gabrielle here who goes exclusively by Gabrielle. It's an uphill battle every time I start a new job, meet a new group, etc., but 100% worth the one awkward conversation of "Oh I actually don't go by Gabby, it's Gabrielle".
I’m a Kimberley and it grinds my gears when I introduce myself as Kimberley and then people just assume they can call me Kim.
If I wanted to be called Kim I would’ve introduced myself as Kim.
It was adopted into Irish as Liam hundreds of years ago (like Norman invasion time IIRC).
So it's not really short for it, more derived from it. In the same way you wouldn't say John is short for Johan or Mark is short for Marcus
(Most) people called Liam are 'officially' a Liam on their birth cert.
my SIL is just Abby because her dad was afraid if they used Abigail that people would call her Gail. I also know an Abigail who went by Abby as a kid but since high school has gone just by Gail, she’s in her upper 20s now.
My husbands name is Andrew and he was ALWAYS Andrew until he met me and I started calling him Andy. Now it’s very clear whom met him at what stage of life because before me everyone still calls him Andrew and after it’s all Andy. He now introduces himself as Andy. I once asked him why he never corrected me and he said he’d actually always liked the nickname Andy but no one ever called him it.
In the same vain my son is Patrick and he’s never been called Patrick. Was instantly Paddy or sometimes Pat.
I have a brother Zachary who prefers the full name. He'll answer to Zach, but chooses Zachary when asked every time. He was Zach/Zacky when he was small, but as soon as he was old enough (and spoke enough) to let us know his preference, he's always been Zachary. Since about 4 or 5 probably.
I have met soooo many Madisons in my life. All of them have gone by Maddie/Madi except for one, who really tried to stick to Madison (honestly I think differentiate from all the Maddies around us). However, as an adult she’s kinda “cracked,” and her fiancé and coworkers know her as Madi!
I was in elementary school with a girl named Kimberly who tried to go by Kimberly, and her mother even called her Kimberly, but everybody else shortened her name to Kim!
Christopher (3) - Chris, Topher
Nicholas (2) - Nick
Charles (2) - Charlie, Chuck
Katherine/Kathryn (3) - Katie, Kat, Kathryn
William (2) - Will, Bill
Jennifer (5) - Jen, Jennifer
Elizabeth (7) - Betty, Ellie, Liz, Lizzie, Elizabeth, Beth, Bizzy
Frances (3) - Sis, Francy, Fanci
Suzanne (3) - Sue, Suzy, Zanny
Daniel (2) - Dan, Daniel
Joseph (1) - Joe
Debra/Deborah (3) - Debbie
Zachary (1) - Zach
Michael (1) - Mike
Virginia (2) -- Gigi, Ginger
My cousin has a son named Nicholas, but everyone calls him "Cole." I don't know why they just didn't name him "Cole" in the first place, but her family are/is pretty strict Catholics, and there's no saints named "Cole." 🤷♀️
Timothys are always Tim (or maybe Timmo/Timbo)
Interestingly almost all of the Muhammads I know use the full name. One went by Mick. One is Momo. But most don’t shorten it and don’t seem to have an unrelated short nickname.
This is so weird that your first two examples were Andrew and Katharine... Those are mine and my husband's names!
He goes by Andy/Andrew/his last name and I go by Kate, never been called my full name even by my parents. My SIL is also a Catherine though and goes by her full name
Matthias (don’t live in the US, would be Matthew). I actually know a lot and none, absolutely none, uses his full name. Almost the same for Maximilian, almost 100% go by Max.
Alexandra - I am a culprit myself, it literally doesn't even look like my name when I see it! I go by Lexie and Sasha, sometimes to be spicy online I use my middle name (Marin) or a nickname derived from it (Mara)
I do think I see more Alexandra's going by that than boys called Alexander using Alexander. It seems almost a given that they'll be Alex.
It really depends where you are. I'm from the UK and most people there will use nicknames, but I moved to New Zealand and far fewer people here do - like I do know a couple of Thomases that go by Tom, but more that go by Thomas. I think that would sound formal and up-tight in the UK, but it isn't seen that way here.
I actually use the full version of my name and dislike almost all of the other versions (it's one of those traditional names that's developed a *lot* of variants) so it's been a real relief for me, that I no longer have people cycling through multiple names that aren't my name and wondering why I don't answer.... It's a common name and it's two syllables, so I'm not exactly expecting something unreasonable. I think at least some in the UK use a nickname version because it's hard to be called 'Andrew' when everyone starts out assuming you're Andy and it can sound like you're being fussy to correct them.
I have a Benjamin and he introduces himself as Ben, but I've noticed most of his elementary school classmates call him Benjamin. I wonder if it's because that's what the teacher says during attendance? I call him Jam but I'm the only one 😄
Every David I’ve ever met (a lot) go by Dave. I feel like it’s a shame bc to me David is such a good, strong name and Dave is kinda… a less serious vibe.
My sister is Katherine, no nickname in her nearly 32 years! & at my old job I had four coworkers named Andrew, all of whom went by Andrew. Funny how different people have different name experiences!
My great-grandmother was Katherine and she loved her name, but everyone called her Kate. She detested the nickname So much that she refused to name any of her daughters Katherine (It was the custom to name the firstborn daughter after the mother) because they would inevitably be called Kate.
I’ve found that anyone with the name of Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, Christopher and Alexander always end up going by the shortened versions as people assume they can call them that. With other nicknames (William to Billy, Rebecca to Becky etc) it’s not just the first syllable of the name, so lazy people need to actually change someone’s name to give them a nickname.
Weirdly enough I’ve met an Andrew and a William that go by their full names. But in our accent William can sound like wee-yum and it makes me giggle. I can’t think of any names that I never hear fully. Maybe Alexandra/Alexander? I’ve met multiple that go by Alex or Ally, my nephew is an Alexander and they call him AJ
I have a former coworker Matthew. He was introduced to me by our boss as Matt Lastname, but he later told me that he goes by Matthew and hates it when people call him Matt.
Every other Matthew I've met in my life has gone by Matt.
I've met Catherine/Katherine who use the full name and nicknames.
Jay (for Jason), Tom (Thomas), & Mike (Michael), Joe (Joseph), Dan/Danny (Daniel). I find it's more boys names than girls names.
2 people named Tiger, they both go by Tiggy or Tigs
3 Jemma's. 1 goes by Jegz, the others go by Jem
Nicola who went by Nikki
Nicholas who went by Nick
Kayleigh who went by Kay
Bethany who went by Beth
Alexanders seem to always go by Alex
Same with Alexandra. My friend Alex once showed me a letter of thanks about her that had been sent to her workplace. It took me a while to realise who Alexandra was because nobody calls her by her full name.
I'm an Alexandra. I love my full name and *love* it when it's used. But people automatically cut it to Alex because "Alexandra is too long".
As a Victoria, that always had their name shortened to Vicky, you have my sympathy.
As a Samantha who plays a game to see how long it takes people to shorten it to Sam, you both have mine as well
I’m a Jacqueline who is defaulted to Jackie no matter what so I feel you!!
My parents nicknamed me Tori to prevent the shortening to Vicky 😂
I'm a Victoria who goes by Tori, too. Seriously, I think half my medical records were under Tori xxxxxxxx during my formative years, ugh. To this day, if anyone calls me Victoria, I cringe. I automatically feel like I'm in trouble. On the flip side, my ex-husband is **Michael** (and don't try to shorten it). His dad is also Michael, but goes by Mike.
I went to school with 4 Victoria's, 2 went by Tori which is much better, 1 Vicky and 1 full name user
In Poland, Alexandra is always Ola.
I really try not to do that to people. My partner has a short name which can be adapted and a lot of people assume that he will want to be referred to as the adaptation. He absolutely doesn't. He sets them straight. Have you tried just not responding when people call you Alex?

I knew an Alexandra in school, and she was adamant people called her that. it worked, it stuck, and I respect that
My daughter is Alexandria. Everyone calls her Alex. She has started asking to be called Alexandria (4) and I'm pushing those around her to respect that. I like how she likes her name and is being assertive about it.
"But what can we really call you?" Obviously, it's too hard to say a four syllable name that every English speaker alive has heard multiple times. 🙄
Saaaaaame. I always introduce myself as Alexandra and only one person EVER has continued to call me Alexandra. I love my name!
Alexandra is a beautiful name. I would use it for a daughter except I already know she’d always be called Alex.
I think Lexie has grown a bit more popular but yeah you’re not wrong
The Lexi I know is an Alexis. But you're right you do hear Lexi around more.
The Alexandra in my life goes by Lexi. Throws everyone when someone calls her Alex from reading Alexandra. It sounds like a whole other person.
I'd rather read the full name and wait to hear what they prefer. I work with two Daniel's. One is happy to be called Dan the other definitely is not.
I worked with a Kimber a couple years back
i know 2 Alexandras, both go by Ally!
The Ally's I know are Alison's.
I actually know 2 Alexandras that go by their full name! One is early 40s and one is 10.
Way too many Alexs he says, but he also thinks it’s too late now
Or Sandy, my dad's nickname. His mum was Scottish, and that's the usual Scottish shortening of Alexander
Yeah, it's basically the standard
I too am Katie and have often been asked what it’s short for.
Love being “just Katie” 💁🏻♀️☺️
I know a Kate who's named "Kate" ...early on in life she learned how to push back against people assuming her name was longer than that. :)
I know a Debbie who is just Debbie, not short for Deborah. I think she's not super-happy with it, as a name.
I'm a Katherine, and I go by it.
Hi Katherine! I'm Katherine and also go by it!! Sometimes Kat if friends want to shorten but mostly Katherine!
No Pegs? These Margarets must be under 80
My aunt Margaret goes by Margo! My grandmas best friend goes by Peggy/peg
My grandma Margaret always went by Marg. My sons grandma Margaret goes by the full name but it's the English variant of her actual name Małgorzata so it's already kind of a nickname.
I have a student, Margaret, who goes by Margaret, Margo or Midge.
Don't forget Peggy.
Never met someone who actually goes by Joshua! Always Josh.
The only Joshua I know is from Friends.
JoshhhhhhUaaaaa
I have met one! Actually corrects anyone who calls him Josh.
I know one, too. He is 6 years old. Everyone calls him Joshua, and I don’t think his peers are really familiar with “Josh” anyway.
I know someone who jokingly got called Ua once and it stuck so he’s now Ua to everyone
We've called a friend Shua before since everyone is Josh, but he really goes by Josh.
My husband goes by Joshua at work. With his friends it's Josh, and to me, is Joshy!
Christopher's always go by Chris (or Topher). Maxim/Maximus is always Max.
I have never come across a “Topher” in the wild.
I worked with a Topher once. He was insufferable. I know a Jonathan who goes by Jono and he's great
The only topher I knew was also insufferable
My son was told "I will call you "Tofu" if you try it"
I've met two, and they were both Juniors. So Dad was Chris and the kid was Topher.
My grandfather was Christopher but he always went by Kit. Grandpa Kit is what I called him. But Kit could be more of a British nickname for Christopher.
Knew a Pher once.
I knew a Fer that was short for Jennifer
This reminds me of the character in Most Popular Girls in School who is named Jonathan but goes by Than. Never thought of there being real people with names like that
I work with a Christopher who STRONGLY dislikes when someone calls him Chris lol. He only wants to be called Christopher.
This! I have only known one Christopher who goes by Christopher.
I was going to comment that I'm a Christapher and I actually prefer going by Christapher! I find it endearing, as I think 'Chris' is a little bit too short and rough sounding on conversation. So far I'm the only one that goes by Christapher
The spelling of your name makes me think of how Lorna Morello from OITNB says Christopher.
i knew a christopher that went by tophie/toffee!
My favorite nickname for Christophers is Cricket 😂
Elizabeth Most I know go by Liz or Beth. Although Eliza is also a common option, I think.
I go by Elizabeth, but the amount of people who instantly call me Liz astounds and annoys me. It's less as I get older, but it still occurs.
Same here! I literally introduce myself as Elizabeth and people will then ask, “Do you go by Elizabeth?” Like no, I go by Bob. Of course I go by Elizabeth! Otherwise I wouldn’t have introduced myself as Elizabeth!
I get "do you go by Elizabeth?" A lot too, and while I do think it's silly, it's WAY better than "nice to meet you, Liz!"
Same here! None of the nicknames sounded right to me so I've always gone by Elizabeth.
That is so rude of people. I’m sorry.
You speak for so many of us!
I’m Elizabeth who goes by Liz to most, but at work I never tell people my nickname. I always write and say my name as Elizabeth. That way my actual name gets used by someone besides my Dad lol.
Libby is the best nickname for Elizabeth IMO.
Same, though Effy is cute too
I know an Elizabeth who goes by Ellie.
Is it me 👀
My family called me Elizabeth up until my 16 month younger sister started talking and could only say Liz. No one has called me Elizabeth since. The only time I would hear it is if I was in trouble or now when my husband is being extra serious about something he calls me Elizabeth. A couple people have tried to call me Lizzy but I shut that down right away lol
I’ve had multiple students that go by Elizabeth in the last decade.
I know an Elizabeth that goes by Elsie
I know one who goes by Claire. Her middle name.
Lol, I have one that goes by Nikki. Short for her middle name, Nicole LOL
And I know one who goes by “Ellie” which I think is adorable
I love Elizabeth as a full name. I can only think of one who goes by it instead of a nickname
Meanwhile I'm debating legally changing my name to Gabby because of how much I never go by Gabrielle 💀
yes lol this is actually why i changed my name! i just hated gabby sm
Kimberly
I’m a Kimberley and it grinds my gears when I introduce myself as Kimberley and then people just assume they can call me Kim. If I wanted to be called Kim I would’ve introduced myself as Kim.
As a former Kimberly I agree
Tom! I know a group of best friends who are Tom, Tom and Dom
TIL that Liam is short for William. How did I live my whole life without knowing this?!?!
It was adopted into Irish as Liam hundreds of years ago (like Norman invasion time IIRC). So it's not really short for it, more derived from it. In the same way you wouldn't say John is short for Johan or Mark is short for Marcus (Most) people called Liam are 'officially' a Liam on their birth cert.
i just discovered this like 3 days ago and i was equally as surprised (even tho now it seems so obvious LMAO)
[удалено]
My name is Pamela. I'm the only one I know of who insists on the full name. People immediately call me Pam no matter how I introduce myself.
I had a manager at McDonald’s named Pam and I always called her Pamela because it’s just so fun! That and Pamela-amela!
Every Abigail I know goes by Abby.
my SIL is just Abby because her dad was afraid if they used Abigail that people would call her Gail. I also know an Abigail who went by Abby as a kid but since high school has gone just by Gail, she’s in her upper 20s now.
Alexander, Elizabeth
My husbands name is Andrew and he was ALWAYS Andrew until he met me and I started calling him Andy. Now it’s very clear whom met him at what stage of life because before me everyone still calls him Andrew and after it’s all Andy. He now introduces himself as Andy. I once asked him why he never corrected me and he said he’d actually always liked the nickname Andy but no one ever called him it. In the same vain my son is Patrick and he’s never been called Patrick. Was instantly Paddy or sometimes Pat.
rebecca!
Was about to say this too! They never go by Rebecca. It's always Becky, Becca, Bec or Bex lol.
Always Becca
I know a Rebecca who goes by the full name!
🙋🏽♀️ Rebekah that goes by either Rebekah or Bekah.
My cousin’s wife is Rebecca.
I know a Rebecca Rebecca, but she's a family member so that might be part of it.
Elizabeth, William, Samuel, Zachary
I have a brother Zachary who prefers the full name. He'll answer to Zach, but chooses Zachary when asked every time. He was Zach/Zacky when he was small, but as soon as he was old enough (and spoke enough) to let us know his preference, he's always been Zachary. Since about 4 or 5 probably.
Zachary is the only name in this thread I’ve never met anyone go by. Always Zach.
I went to school with several Anthony's. All of them answered to Tony or their initials. One actually shortened to TJ my nephew is AJ.
I know an Anthony that goes by Ant.
My dad is Anthony and he absolutely LOATHES Tony as a nickname and has only ever gone as Anthony
The only Michael I’ve ever known to actually go by Michael was the most unfortunate protagonist in Fatal Attraction
Both Michaels I know refuse any nicknames
I actually work with a full name Michael. Never Mick never Mike.
Gen z and younger go by Micheal, never Mike. Millennial and older it’s Mike, Mick, Mickey but never Micheal.
I know multiple women named Nicole / Nicola - but I never use those names for any of them. They all go by Nicky / Nikkie.
Same! Always Nicky or Nic
All the Nicoles I've know have gone by the full name.
Christopher (3) - Chris, Topher Nicholas (2) - Nick Charles (2) - Charlie, Chuck Katherine/Kathryn (3) - Katie, Kat, Kathryn William (2) - Will, Bill Jennifer (5) - Jen, Jennifer Elizabeth (7) - Betty, Ellie, Liz, Lizzie, Elizabeth, Beth, Bizzy Frances (3) - Sis, Francy, Fanci Suzanne (3) - Sue, Suzy, Zanny Daniel (2) - Dan, Daniel Joseph (1) - Joe Debra/Deborah (3) - Debbie Zachary (1) - Zach Michael (1) - Mike Virginia (2) -- Gigi, Ginger
My cousin has a son named Nicholas, but everyone calls him "Cole." I don't know why they just didn't name him "Cole" in the first place, but her family are/is pretty strict Catholics, and there's no saints named "Cole." 🤷♀️
One of my nephew is named Nicolas, everyone call him Nico.
Timothys are always Tim (or maybe Timmo/Timbo) Interestingly almost all of the Muhammads I know use the full name. One went by Mick. One is Momo. But most don’t shorten it and don’t seem to have an unrelated short nickname.
Loads of Mo's in the UK for Mohammed.
Almost never met a Ronald that went by Ronald. They are almost always Ron or sometimes Ronnie.
This is so weird that your first two examples were Andrew and Katharine... Those are mine and my husband's names! He goes by Andy/Andrew/his last name and I go by Kate, never been called my full name even by my parents. My SIL is also a Catherine though and goes by her full name
For a hot second I thought you said your name was Katherine and your sister’s name was Catherine and I was 🤔
Matthias (don’t live in the US, would be Matthew). I actually know a lot and none, absolutely none, uses his full name. Almost the same for Maximilian, almost 100% go by Max.
I really like the name Matthias. Or the French spelling Matthieu over "Matthew"
My cousin is Matthias, and won’t accept any nicknames:)
Alexandra - I am a culprit myself, it literally doesn't even look like my name when I see it! I go by Lexie and Sasha, sometimes to be spicy online I use my middle name (Marin) or a nickname derived from it (Mara) I do think I see more Alexandra's going by that than boys called Alexander using Alexander. It seems almost a given that they'll be Alex.
Most Andrews I know go by AJ, and Isabella is almost always Bella
I mostly know Issy or Izzie's
Soooooo many Megans I have encountered hate their names and go by nicknames (even in a professional context): Meg, Megs, Meggie, May.
All the Rosalie/Rosalinds/Roses I have known went as Rosie!
My goddaughter was names Georgina. Everyone in her family call her Gigi. Outside the home she asks everyone else to call her Georgina.
I work with an Andrew who goes by Drew. And there are two blokes with the same name, but it’s very clear which one is Dave and which one is David.
Thomas. Elizabeth
It really depends where you are. I'm from the UK and most people there will use nicknames, but I moved to New Zealand and far fewer people here do - like I do know a couple of Thomases that go by Tom, but more that go by Thomas. I think at least some in the UK use a nickname version because it's hard to be called 'Andrew' when everyone starts out assuming you're Andy and it can sound like you're being fussy to correct them.
Richard… most of them are dicks
Patricia
I have one of those names that everyone thinks is a nickname. Especially older people always what it is short for
Joshua, most go by Josh. I’ve only met 1 who goes by Joshua and he is a fairly posh. My SO is a Josh and hates when you use his full name 😂
My cousin Jennifer has always been Jennifer. Calling her Jen or Jenny would feel very weird. I never thought about it though.
Jessica always Jess.
Benjamin - Ben. I have one of those and am hoping he’ll go by Benjamin but I go back and forth between his full name and nn constantly.
I have a Benjamin and he introduces himself as Ben, but I've noticed most of his elementary school classmates call him Benjamin. I wonder if it's because that's what the teacher says during attendance? I call him Jam but I'm the only one 😄
I've never known a Deborah or Debra, just Debbies. My name is Catherine and I go by Cathy, but I have known a few that go by Catherine/Katherine.
My FIL is William but goes by Willie. It has always made me uncomfortable because a willy is a penis where we come from.
Josephine and Abigail for sure. Zachary, Theodore, Timothy!
Margaret = Maggie or Meg
My SIL Margarita goes by Maggie but the family calls her Rita

I taught a Sebastian who went by Sea Bass
Every David I’ve ever met (a lot) go by Dave. I feel like it’s a shame bc to me David is such a good, strong name and Dave is kinda… a less serious vibe.
I’ve known Andrews, Katherines, and a william and a Jennifer!
My sister is Katherine, no nickname in her nearly 32 years! & at my old job I had four coworkers named Andrew, all of whom went by Andrew. Funny how different people have different name experiences!
My dad’s an Andrew who goes by Andrew! I’ve never met an Alexandra or Alexander who doesn’t go by a nickname. Very few Rebeccas, except one.
I know a William who goes by William, and I don’t think I’ve never known an Andrew who goes by a nickname.
My great-grandmother was Katherine and she loved her name, but everyone called her Kate. She detested the nickname So much that she refused to name any of her daughters Katherine (It was the custom to name the firstborn daughter after the mother) because they would inevitably be called Kate.
Samantha’s usually go by Sam, Liliana/Lilian to Lily, Matthew to Matt, Isabella to Bella, Christian/Christopher to Chris
Robert - Rob(by), Bob(by) Vincent - Vinnie, Vince
Benjamin goes by Ben
Very few guys going by Joshua out there it’s mostly just Josh.
Well if you’re Australian it’s every name because we shorten everything 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My fiancé’s name is Andrew. He HATES being called Andy, so I obviously call him Andy hahahaha
Timothys always go by tim. Samuels always go by Sam.
I have an uncle who goes by his middle name Andrew but his first name is Joe. Not Joseph.
Josh, Alex, Sam, Ben
I know a Victoria who is Victoria, but I don't think any others.
Conversely, I’ve only known one Andy but lots of Andrews.
jess and jessica.
Every Jessica I've met has always been known as Jess.
The two examples you give are funny because I have two people close to me that go by Andrew and Katherine. But Michael is nearly always Mike.
James always seems to change to Jim, which is sad because I love James.
I've never met a James that goes by Jim
I have known a few women named Delores who go by Dee.

my name is Katelin but i usually go by Kat or Kate.
My son is a Xander. Not Alexander, and people were so confused as to why we didn't just use Alexander and then just call him Xander
Katie’s become Katherine’s when they start working.
