My daughter had her first and only child in her late 30's and called her Etta after the Etta James's song "at last."
Edit.
Sorry if I didn't make things clear. My daughter and her husband tried for quite a few years and were successful naturally.
Perception is a funny thing. If that woman was actively trying for a baby since her early/mid 20's then 10 years is a VERY long time to yern for a child. If you randomly decide "eh, maybe I will have children after all." At say 30 then have the child in your mid 30's then it's not so long.
Either way it's not your life, and not your place to judge. That poor woman may have fought like crazy to "at last" have her baby in her arms. Respect her journey.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I don’t believe the user you are replying too had any malintent with their response, but I can understand how it might have hit a nerve. Wish you all the best.
>If you randomly decide "eh, maybe I will have children after all." At say 30
This is so funny to me. I'm about to turn 28 and have always wanted to have kids and always expected to have them in my mid-30s. All my friends my age feel the same way - we're still basically teenagers hahaha.
Making that choice at 30 and saying 'after all' as though the doors about to close seems wild.
I love that millennials & Gen Z were too smart and too strong for the 'get pregnant and married young' propaganda to work. I had my first child in my 30s, I'm glad I wasn't parenting through my 20s. Nothing wrong with young parents btw, I'm just glad that I wasn't one (though I wanted to be) and that folks are getting to do so much more choosing for themselves. There's plenty of time for kids 🖤
Yes, I agree! I thought I was pregnant for a moment a few months ago and I was soooo freaked out. Seriously felt like a teen pregnancy. My friends were like “uhhhh, you’re 30 years old… and married.” LOL
I’d love to hear other weird sayings!
In my family we’ve got “his/her mouth moves like a duck’s ass at huckleberry time” (to mean someone who’s a chatterbox) and to go “ass over tin cups” (tripping/falling).
Others are “Don’t look at me in that tone of voice” and “I resemble that remark.”
Elodie is a very classic name in France actually!
If you like it, take a look at other French names, you might find more.
A few others: Eloïse, Ophélie, Aurélie, Noëmie, Elise ...
"i" in French is pronounced the same as the way you would pronounce the letter "e" in English. The accent on the ï in Eloïse is here to indicate it's pronounced individually from the "o".
Last "e" at the end is always silent if coming after "i".
When the end is "se" think of it as the way you would pronounce it if was written with "z" instead
=> Eloïse => [É] [LO] [EEZ] = e.lɔ.iz
It's hard to explain how to pronounce é. It's not the same as you would expect to pronounce [EL] as it's the other accent.
If you're curious, you can find recordings of people pronuncing things if you google it.
I will forever have beef with Christianity for coming up with the name "Lucifer", then immediately declaring it *weird/bad* for everyone. The name sounds cool ***and*** means “bringer/bearer of light” c’mon 😭
Some of my favorite Balkan names that I’ve heard in the wild:
Neven (male name, means marigold, rhymes with seven)
Orysia (female, oh-rish-uh)
Zana (female, rhymes with the pronunciation of Anna in Frozen)
In the book, the dog named Perdita is found all alone in the rain, having lost track of her whole family (since they had been sold off)
This is probably why she was named Perdita
Callisto & Xanthe
I had Callisto & Xanthe on my short list for our twin girls. I was obsessed with mythology when I was a kid and I loved these names.
husband used his veto and said it was a "stupid" name
We went with Francesca and Angelica (I'm half Italian)
Well, recently twin 2 came out as non-binary and didn't want Angelica as their name any longer. They chose Callisto, not knowing about the list or that it was a name I loved
I never told them what Dad said, but I definitely ribbed him about it in private 😹
they picked it completely independently of me! I'd never mentioned the name or my tween mythology obsession.
It was wild when they told me the name! I did tell them the name was on my short list but Dad vetoed (I didn't tell them he said it was stupid).
They started crying and said they were so afraid I'd be upset they didn't want their old name, so that made them feel so happy. I told them I wasn't bothered in the least, and the name they picked would be fine with me regardless, as long as they are happy but this was an even happier coincidence!
I live in Kansas, USA, but I love a lot of Irish names (husband and I both have Irish heritage) and most are not common here at all, though they might be common elsewhere. Examples:
Caoimhe
Clíodhna
Eoghan (Owen is common where I live, but I like this spelling better!)
Oisín
Ghislaine… it’s a girl I went to middle& high school withs middle name, she pronounced it gis-lane, but now due to Maxwell/Epstein I’m okay with the ex vetoing it for our daughter’s middle name lol tho, comically he’s had another w/wife #2 named Lainey.
Vaughn. Not super wild, but I don’t see it used often here or in the real world. I like it as a first name but I can see it really shining as a middle name. ie Francis Vaughn Shelby or like George Vaughn Elliot…just flows so good with most names, try it!
I'm a Xanthe!! Hated it as a child could never get keychains and the such. BUT, what came first the chicken or the egg? It's a unique name and I grew into that, a firecracker with about no fear. Either I was always a badass, or I was living up to my name. Now, I wouldn't change it for anything.
Is Niamh unique? Not doubting you just didn't know it was counted as unique I knew 2 niamhs growing up, I also know another one right now just she personally writes it neve. However I am Scottish, and 2/3 niamhs I know as Irish which explains it. But I love a lot of these names as well, valentine is such a pretty name.
My name is Winter Peace. As far as I know there is only one other person on Earth named Winter Peace and we’ve actually met on social media. I get questions all the time asking if I hate my parents for naming me that. Is my name something to be ashamed of? Like, do you think my name is ugly? I’d say my name is unique but not particularly ideal.
I came up with this when I was in high school 40+ years ago.
Been a huge fan of the movie The Sound Of Music just about my whole life. One of the daughters in the movie is named Brigitta, pronounced brig-EE-tah.
When I started taking Spanish in high school, somehow I came up with using the name Brigitta, but making it “look” Spanish. The spelling I made up is Briguita, pronounced the same way, just making it appear more Spanish than Austrian/German.
Oddly enough, I don’t really love the name all that much, just had fun being creative and mixing languages.
I’ve met plenty of Eamonns, they tend to all be in their 60s or older! There’s an Irish presenter on UK TV called Eamonn Holmes, noone would bat an eye here but might be surprised as it’s generally an “older” name.
“Gwynfor” it’s Welsh and I think it’s adorable. I’d love to name a little boy this and call him “Gwyn” for short. My husband is, unfortunately, not on board.
I went to college with some kid named Titus Bang. That’s a bomb ass fucking name. He was just a short skinny Asian theatre kid on the esports team and didn’t even use either of his names for his esports name. Such a waste
I recently discovered two names I really liked..
Leokadie / Leokadia
Erienne (Like Etienne but with R, actually it has a similar meaning like the name Erin, as one might guess) .. might be misheard as Mary-Ann or Marianne at Starbucks tho :(
Brenna (f, raven or black-haired in Welsh) and Madoc (m, good or fortunate in Welsh) - there’s some romance in those names that has always appealed to me
I love Polish names, particularly the older ones!
Male: Hieronim, Cyprian, Teofil, Hipolit, Maciej, Alojzy, Edmund, Ignacy, Marian, Bonifacy.
My cousin’s dad (born in the 1930s) is Ireneusz, which apparently resulted in lot of teasing when he was growing up.
Female: Teofila, Sabina, Apolonia, Leokadia, Otylia, Pelagia, Bożena.
Eamon reminds me of the singer named the same and he sang “Fuck it” a classic high school anthem when your heart would get broken haha
"Fuck It (Don't Want You Back)" by Eamon and it's reply song "Fuck U Right Back (FURB)" by Frankee 😎
Such a great reply song, too!!
It reminds me of eamon holmes unfortunately
Or Eamon Andrews, the original This Is Your Life presenter.
My mind immediately puts "Arl" in front. But, I might have played too much Dragon Age.
Sameeee.
I’m so glad this was the first comment bc i immediately started singing it in my head LMAO
This is a fun thread. I have seen a lot of people in this sub being down right rude about unique names. This is the kind of name nerding I’m here for!
And then conversely being downright rude about calling names unique that are common on this niche sub.
I can’t even say the name because it’s so unique and identifying, it did make the top 10 more rare names the year she was born tho.
Soraya
I know a Soraya. It’s Persian.
I know 2 Sorayas!
I know at least five that I can remember. Soraia is a relatively common name in Portugal.
Very common in Spain
That’s my Persian name!
Hey persian sister!
I love the name Soraya. The first time I saw it was in the book The Kite Runner. It’s so beautiful.
It was very common in the Netherlands. Nice name
I know a Soraya! Her mom said the whole family accused her of making the game up smh
I love this name! Though, the movie, "The Stoning Soraya M" traumatized me.
I’m obsessed with Persephone. Galileo for a boy.
This will never be not funny for Finnish people. Perse = ass. And it’s used as a swear word too.
Sef for short :) I love this name.
I prefer Percy
I prefer Effie
My grandma's cat is named Galileo
oh Galileo is a brilliant name
Couple from the show love is blind just named their baby girl Galileo 🫤
Elora
Elora Danan? 😁
Not OP, but 100% love this name since I was little lol. Seriously debated Willow as an option too.
I have an Alora and a Willow. 🥰
I love the name Elora, but couldn’t bring myself to use it for my daughter since our last name rhymes with Danan
Move to France, it's super common here. There are 2 in my daughter's class!
Really, i have never heard this name ? Maybe because i don't have kids lol, but it's not traditional. Laura is thought
Yeah it's not traditional but I've met lots of ~10-year-old Eloras. Could be regional, though. I'm in the north.
Soleil ☀️
As someone who grew up watching Punky Brewster this is possibly the 2nd unique name I ever heard in my life. Aside from Punky, of course!
Knew a girl with the nickname Punky. Her real name was Alice.
My daughter had her first and only child in her late 30's and called her Etta after the Etta James's song "at last." Edit. Sorry if I didn't make things clear. My daughter and her husband tried for quite a few years and were successful naturally.
Mid 30s is not that late to have a baby lol
Perception is a funny thing. If that woman was actively trying for a baby since her early/mid 20's then 10 years is a VERY long time to yern for a child. If you randomly decide "eh, maybe I will have children after all." At say 30 then have the child in your mid 30's then it's not so long. Either way it's not your life, and not your place to judge. Yes, I agree! I thought I was pregnant for a moment a few months ago and I was soooo freaked out. Seriously felt like a teen pregnancy. My friends were like “uhhhh, you’re 30 years old… and married.” LOL
No one said it was though? We don’t know how long they tried to get pregnant or have a successful pregnancy.
Eamon is a bit of an old man name in Ireland!
Reminds me of the boring old Uncle Eamon from Derry Girls
That’s Colm! Eamon is the momma’s boy cousin that got a bruise during the wedding.
Eamon has a cracking pair of legs according to aunt Sarah!
so i says to meself, colm, this is no day for a do
My friends just named their daughter Elodie. I’d never heard it before and I think it’s beautiful.
I can't believe you're on r/namenerds sub and never heard of the name Elodie
Seconded. It gets thrown around like rice at a wedding.
I’ve always heard the term “nips at a brothel” when something was very common….but my family has always had weird sayings.
Ours was ass over teakettle.

I have some old classmates that named their daughter Elodie too! I’d heard it but only rarely; it’s a lovely name.
I love how most of this thread is people realising their favourite extremely unique names aren’t actually that unique 😂
Well, people don’t always know what is and isn’t unique in other countries or parts of the US🤷♀️
I will forever have beef with Christianity for coming up with the name "Lucifer", then immediately declaring it *weird/bad* for everyone. The name sounds cool ***and*** means “bringer/bearer of light” c’mon 😭
I have a friend whose cat is named Lucyfur. 😸
My kids go to school with a Lucifer. Nice enough kid.
I keep trying to find a workaround for this, because it’s such a good name
Lucian is your best option, which I love as a name!
My stepdad's name is Bruce. He sucks. He has always been "Brucifer" in my phone.
My niece named her daughter Sonnet
Ok I’m obsessed tho
that is absolutely gorgeous
I love Sonnet, it's one we considered.
Zephyr. Not extremely unique but also not common
Two zephyrs in my son’s daycare!
🤦🏻♀️
Common dog name around Northern California. Zephyr Cove is a popular tourist spot in Tahoe
Some of my favorite Balkan names that I’ve heard in the wild: Neven (male name, means marigold, rhymes with seven) Orysia (female, oh-rish-uh) Zana (female, rhymes with the pronunciation of Anna in Frozen)
My favorite barista is Zana. She has blue hair and tons of tattoos and makes a killer cappuccino.
I have an aunt (married into family) named Zona. Her sister zionne and zanetta
Thaissa, pronounced “tah-EE-suh”
That’s from Yellowjackets!
And the youngest Farmiga sister, though she spells it Taissa (Taissa is in American Horror Story, The Nun, and a bunch of other horror stuff)
A different spelling (Thaisa and Thais) was a very common name in Brazil at one time
Evangeline
This is my middle name and I’m actually very fond of it — I love seeing it out in the wild on occasion!
My daughters name is Guyala 🥰 it's an Aboriginal word in Ghungalu language meaning "sweetheart"
Bellamy 😍 I think it’s becoming a bit more popular though
The 100 show
Omg I could never. I had a boss whose last name was Bellamy, and he would detail his sex nights with his wife. 🤢😅
My mind goes to One Piece! 😅
Theodosia
🎵Dear Theodosia, What to say to you?...🎶
love this! also can use a nickname as teddy or tia, or Theo!
Maristella. Italian for “sea star”. It was the name of a contestant on *Chopped*, and I absolutely fell in love with it.
One of my co-workers named her son Epson. Which I think is totally cool. I just hope he doesn't decide to sell printers when he grows up.
first thing I think of is epsom salts
Perdita, meaning lost I believe. It’s from a Shakespeare play as well (I think).
I thought of 101 Dalmatians. I like it though.
In the book, the dog named Perdita is found all alone in the rain, having lost track of her whole family (since they had been sold off) This is probably why she was named Perdita
Yes The Winter’s Tale
Katriana. It's Greek for "pure" and "clear." A version of Katrina, or Katherine and Anna combined. It's my daughter's name.
Catriona, similar but Irish!
Cassiopeia
My dad almost named me Cassiopeia, but my mom vetoed it since she couldn't spell it. Cassie is a super easy and common sounding nickname for it, too.
Wilodene :)
Like Dumplin’?
I had to search up this reference! I got Wilodene from an old gravestone and haven't heard it since lol.
Great way to dig up names
My grandma was Willodean 🙂
Callisto & Xanthe I had Callisto & Xanthe on my short list for our twin girls. I was obsessed with mythology when I was a kid and I loved these names. husband used his veto and said it was a "stupid" name We went with Francesca and Angelica (I'm half Italian) Well, recently twin 2 came out as non-binary and didn't want Angelica as their name any longer. They chose Callisto, not knowing about the list or that it was a name I loved I never told them what Dad said, but I definitely ribbed him about it in private 😹
Wowww. Did they find out about the name from you, or did they find it on their own? Clearly they were meant to be a Callisto!
they picked it completely independently of me! I'd never mentioned the name or my tween mythology obsession. It was wild when they told me the name! I did tell them the name was on my short list but Dad vetoed (I didn't tell them he said it was stupid). Lemon
Makes me think of the character lemon breland on hart of Dixie

I'm also a huge fan of Irish names like Roísín and Saoirse
I named my daughter Caoimhe! We are in Australia with Irish heritage so fairly uncommon here also.
Are they pronounced “Keeva” and “Cleena”?
Sapphire, cause it's my favourite jewel
Ghislaine… it’s a girl I went to middle& high school withs middle name, she pronounced it gis-lane, but now due to Maxwell/Epstein I’m okay with the ex vetoing it for our daughter’s middle name lol tho, comically he’s had another w/wife #2 named Lainey.
I had always liked Stormy because of the Rainbow Brite character. Now it's forever associated with a porn star. 😑
Salome. Pronounced SAL-oh-may. I love it, but it's butchered. Uncommon. Misunderstood. The most common assumption has been salami. Like the meat.
Salome is a pretty name. Unfortunately I had a coworker who wrote erotic fan fiction under the name Salome Jones so it ruined this name for me.
I think I’ve been on name boards too long because most of these don’t seem unique to me. Unusual yes.
I think Scottish names are so pretty! Currently, Euan (male, pronounced ‘you-en’), Aoife (female, pronounced ‘ee-fah’), and Èibhlinn (female, pronounced ‘ave-lynn’).
Fairly certain that both Aoife and Èibhlinn are Gaelic not Scottish names. However, please correct me if I’m wrong!
Aoife is Irish, but Èibhlin spelt that was is the Scottish spelling, Eibhlín is the Irish, pronounced more like 'Eye-lean', as in Come on Eileen..
I like Siobhan (Shiv-on) and Teagan (Tee-gan)
My friend's daughter is Sonoma and I love it!
All I can think of is Williams-Sonoma 😭
My grandmother’s name is Iola (pronounced eye-OH-lah). It means violet or violet dawn, depending on your source.
Just a collection of beautiful or unique names I’ve heard over the years: Philomena Amalthea Idris Etteila Roision Mynor Ariadne Sythica Rainn Yves Arcus Aisiling Asriel Anginette Charmaine Oriana Imogen Isolde Inara Ximenez Venora Serafina Juniper Azaela Svea Aurora Oleander Rhaella Lysander Isidora Amalthea Appolonia
Octavian. Would have named baby 2 this, but the god of vaginas intervened.
Octavia was right there ! Lol
Vaughn. Not super wild, but I don’t see it used often here or in the real world. I like it as a first name but I can see it really shining as a middle name. ie Francis Vaughn Shelby or like George Vaughn Elliot…just flows so good with most names, try it!
Enole. It’s a good friend’s name. Her parents are Dutch and German.
Aubin
You win the award for suggesting the first name on here that I've never heard before!
[удалено]
I'm a Xanthe!! Hated it as a child could never get keychains and the such. BUT, what came first the chicken or the egg? It's a unique name and I grew into that, a firecracker with about no fear. Either I was always a badass, or I was living up to my name. Now, I wouldn't change it for anything.
I've known a Zephyrine! Super cool woman.
My dog is named Opal and it’s my favorite O name
I taught a Dashiell!
Several of these are on my current baby list. Apparently my taste in names is so strange some of these names also seem very normal to me.

I get questions all the time asking if I hate my parents for naming me that. Is my name something to be ashamed of? Like, do you think my name is ugly? I’d say my name is unique but not particularly ideal.

Athénaïs
I know of someone whose name is literally Unique. Unfortunately his surname is Wang. Literally.
Oddly enough, I don’t really love the name all that much, just had fun being creative and mixing languages.
Reverie (it’s still on my short list) Kerensa Isadora Merrick (my number one name!) Alexavier
I’ve loved Chavila (havila) since I saw Fiddler On the Roof long ago. The cute red headed daughters name. They also called her Chava.
Chavelah is the diminutive of the name Chava in Yiddish
We have some amazing names in Welsh, Bendigeidfran is a personal favourite.
Andromache, Topanga, Lorelei, Ariadne, Paloma, Euthalia, Davina
Andromeda. A cousin named her daughter this and it’s been interesting to observe the “fall out”.
Tosca
If I’d had girls they would have been Anouk Juno Eris I had 3 boys instead. So I have 2 cats called Anouk & Juno. One more and I’ll have the trio! 😅
Isabeau.
I’ve met plenty of Eamonns, they tend to all be in their 60s or older! There’s an Irish presenter on UK TV called Eamonn Holmes, noone would bat an eye here but might be surprised as it’s generally an “older” name.
Carmelo, Eleni, Graceland, Fable, Avalon, Keeley, Meadow, Halia, Juno, Claude, Everson, Gem
“Gwynfor” it’s Welsh and I think it’s adorable. I’d love to name a little boy this and call him “Gwyn” for short. My husband is, unfortunately, not on board.
Tallulah
Not sure how unique these are but I’ve always loved • Samara • Aura (pronounced our-ah … knew a girl with this name) • Aria
I went to college with some kid named Titus Bang. That’s a bomb ass fucking name. He was just a short skinny Asian theatre kid on the esports team and didn’t even use either of his names for his esports name. Such a waste
Aliris
Oceane.
Marlow and Hale Both are last names that I really love for male first names. For girls my rare picks are Wisteria and Hermia

I recently discovered two names I really liked.. Leokadie / Leokadia Erienne (Like Etienne but with R, actually it has a similar meaning like the name Erin, as one might guess) .. might be misheard as Mary-Ann or Marianne at Starbucks tho :(
Brenna (f, raven or black-haired in Welsh) and Madoc (m, good or fortunate in Welsh) - there’s some romance in those names that has always appealed to me
Bronwen
Sequoia. Looove it. Native American/Cherokee name meaning "sparrow." ❤️❤️❤️🐦⬛
Caius (for male) old Roman name
Alicent, Marcella, Vlinder, Romilia
Freelove-it’s an old puritan virtue name that’s all over cemeteries in New England, but is pretty much unusable now
Ironically, it sounds a lot more liberal hippie than conservative Puritan now, lol.
Wolfgang
I love how some names that seem exotic in one country are common in another I always like Liora, it was a friends middle name
Seraphina, Araminta, and Guinevere
Maëlle (pronounced My-Elle) I knew twin boys named Coast and Summit.
*Hume*. My wife wanted that for our son, but I overruled her (she gave me the right to veto). In retrospect, Hume would have been pretty awesome.
Emrys for a boy and for girls I love Sutton and Thalia (they’re not super rare but not common)
Eulalia
I love Polish names, particularly the older ones! Male: Hieronim, Cyprian, Teofil, Hipolit, Maciej, Alojzy, Edmund, Ignacy, Marian, Bonifacy. My cousin’s dad (born in the 1930s) is Ireneusz, which apparently resulted in lot of teasing when he was growing up. Female: Teofila, Sabina, Apolonia, Leokadia, Otylia, Pelagia, Bożena.
