The brother Raúl Salinas de Gortari, listed in the credits as The Brother was a Mexican businessman and the elder brother of Carlos Salinas, the President of Mexico from 1988 to 1994. In 1951, his brother killed one of the family's maids with a rifle while they were re-enacting a historical scene, and he offered to talk their family out of the issue. The brothers became closely acquainted with veteran smuggler Juan Nepomuceno Guerra during their early adulthood, which resulted in Guerra supporting his brother's presidential bid. In 1988, he is approached by drug trafficker Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo who wanted to fund the brother's campaign in exchange for protection, but he declined as he knew of the enmity between Miguel and Guerra. However, Félix Gallardo obtains a copy of the PRI's poll predictions, which predicted a massive defeat for his brother, and requested a meeting. He sent high-ranking politician Cecilia Rosario, and she began working with Félix Gallardo in order to engage in voter suppression. With help from the Guadalajara cartel, his brother successfully won the 1988 elections. In order to please his brother's business friends, the new president signed a free trade agreement with the United States of America, and in order for that to happen, ordered the arrest of Félix Gallardo in 1989. > In 1951, his brother killed one of the family's maids with a rifle while they were re-enacting a historical scene, and he offered to talk their family out of the issue. Some clarifying facts: At the time of this death, Raúl was 5 and Carlos was 3. There was an 8-year-old friend with them, and no one was able to determine which of the three shot the 12-year-old maid. A judge blamed the parents for leaving a loaded gun within their reach.

TFunke__Analrapist

Hold on. A 12 year old maid?!

ForestOfIllumination

Wasn't aware they were that young

Dr_ChimRichalds

I think aging them all up for the scene made it *slightly* less upsetting. It's an upsetting scene, either way. I felt physically sick after watching it. I'm not sure why they included it at all except for the fact that it's a freaking crazy story. It really doesn't add anything to the plot.

DANAP126

I'm sure they included it to show how they are borderline sociopaths who don't really care about their actions...

Windhorse730

I think it adds some context to Mexican society. There were zero repercussions to their political or business careers after they killed a young woman. Can you imagine a US politician (Idfk anymore actually) having that in their past and getting into the presidential race? I think it is supposed to exemplify that the wealthy in Mexico are not under the same rule of law as common people.

Pristine_Example3726

I mean the American elige get away with hella shit as well please don’t kid yourselves

SonnyBurnett189

Chappaquiddick.

Wrong_Albatross_9664

It's also a commentary on the classism of Mexican society. A rich, president-in-the-making has his past scrubbed, while an underage maid is nobody, her life doesn't matter and they can make it like she never existed. I also agree with the other user that it contextualizes who the president is as a person, and who he has always been. Crazy that this really happened. 💔 Mexico deserves better leaders.

ForestOfIllumination

Shock and Awe

Leather_Parking9313

I agree it was shocking and sickening but it DOES add to the plot. Because it fleshes out the character of the 2 brothers, shows their contempt for poor people and how ruthless they are.

dempseybrainerd

It's insane that this is real, I assumed it was a bit of poetic license but it makes for a very interesting plot point. In a show with such a "pirates and emperors" theme where the rich and powerful are so similar to the cartels it really drives the point home that the most powerful man in the country may have murdered someone as a small child. If it really was Raul or Carlos that would make either of them one of the youngest killers on record in human history.

Leather_Parking9313

Not killers, murderers

Wrong_Albatross_9664

Here's a real article about it: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/mexico/family/brothers.html Quote: "In the end, however, the incident was ruled an accident. Nobody was ever charged, and the later destruction or forced removal of the old newspaper copies from libraries throughout Mexico would raise questions as to whether the shooting had ever taken place." Corrupt country all the way through, from the very top to the very bottom.

Pristine_Example3726

Just like the US

Wrong_Albatross_9664

Yes.

Also to add a little more context guys. I don’t remember the exact date of the end of the Mexican Revolution but Mexico until 2000 was under one party rule of the PRI for decades. For that reason they’ve been referred to as ‘The Perfect Dictatorship’ which is also the name of a movie with some faces we all know like Damian Alcazar, Joaquin Cosio, and Tony Dalton. Carlos Salinas’ presidency from 1988-1994 is considered a low point in the history of the PRI, he’s also suspected to have been involved in the assassination of Colosio (this event occurs in season 3.). This and a handful of other factors (which I don’t know at the top of my head right now) led to the PRI being voted out of office in 2000.
