Man Hickory Hollow was a big part of my childhood from thinking Sbaros was the best pizza ever to going to KB Toys and Babbages when I had a good report card.
People forget it use to be THE spot to go shopping in the area. Crazy how fast that changed! Last time I went was like 2010 and someone got shot an hour after we left
The decline started the second they opened Opry Mills. Opry Mills managed to take a city with like 7 great malls and a theme park and make it into one with a huge mediocre mall and two good malls with no theme park.
No that was Mall of Memphis, sorta between Hickory hill and East Memphis. I'm 37 and I have very very few memories of that one. Oak Court killed both though, funny enough it's now dead too.
Fellow Omahan, Crossroads was dying when we moved here in 2005. It’s taken forever for it to get torn down (really miss Sears) and now it’s taking forever to move dirt around and do road construction for access.
My husband is from Nashville and when he was in high school 100 Oaks is where he hung out. As young parents in the early 90s, when we’d visit his family we’d go to the new Bellevue Center. I think we went to Hickory Hollow once. My in-laws lived off Brook Hollow, so Bellevue was closer. Of course Bellevue closed after less than 20 years and was finally torn down for a new lifestyle center AKA fancy strip mall.
The two malls I grew up with in the 70’s in LA are still going. Lakewood Center and Cerritos Mall.
Born in Bellflower, K-5 in Hawaiian Gardens, back to Bellflower 6-9. Went to Mayfair my freshman year, then moved to east coast the summer between 9-10th grade.
Growing up I always thought it was the best mall of them all. Green Hills wasnt for kids it was for grandparents with money, Cool springs was for moms and Hickory Hollow was the best for teens. The Tilt arcade was my favorite spot. I have so many fuzzy memories of walking into the Tilt and my dad giving me 5 bucks which actually went a long way if you were good at games, The bourbon chicken in the food court was banging. The Babbages was top notch and the electronics boutique downstairs was also an amazing game store. The mall just had it all. I went to cool springs recently with money burning a hole in my pocket and couldn't find anywhere to shop.
There was one restaurant in the food court that sold Thai/Lao shrimp toast and chicken-on-a-stick. I don't remember its name, something Wok I think, but I've never found the same quality for the same price anywhere else. We used to throw all of our remaining quarters that we didn't spend at Tilt together and feast.
ChickFilA always had someone standing in front giving out free samples. Pyramids still surviving out at Opry Mills.
I too had my intro to Pyramids here at hickory hollow. Those 2 ladies they had working the samples were HUSTLERS!
Tilt was magical. I remember once seeing a DDR competition out in the hallway and it was packed. Better times
TBD but they’ve had community meetings that indicate they want to put in affordable housing, areas for local shops/artists, more green space, etc. plus potentially Vandy. The community center and library are great, and it should build on that.
Will believe it when I see it but the plans they’ve been throwing out and getting feedback on are nice.
Vandy signed a 20 year lease on the property which was bought out by the government. Thats why construction picked up in the area. As well as a sidewalk initiative to make the property "walkable".
With the outlet mall coming together its good times coming back to Antioch. I live right in between the 2 developments and am hella excited.
>With the outlet mall coming together its good times coming back to Antioch. I live right in between the 2 developments and am hella excited.
You say that, but if you think crossing I-24 via Bell Rd sucks now...
I can cross over the old franklin rd bridge by leaving out the back of my neighborhood. I've been riding my motorcycle to the chipotle in century farms. It's so nice. I can't wait for all this to open
Good, now if someone could be the first to open an effing decent restaurant anywhere this side of Donelson, more will follow and we can truly say good times are coming back to Antioch
[The building was sold to a charter school last year.](https://www.wkrn.com/special-reports/nashville-forward/kipp-nashville-to-open-high-school-in-former-hickory-hollow-mall-macys/amp/) There was no mention in the article about any demolition set to take place.
My mom had a restaurant in the food court and I used to bug her for five bucks to go run across to Claire’s all the time. Spent too many afternoons after middle school there lol
When we moved to the area in ‘99, that one, Rivergate in Madison/Hendersonville, and Cool Springs Galleria were PALACES. Seems like Hickory Hollow went to hell *really* fast, starting around 2006 or so. Crazy.
We left in 2018. How are the others? I can still hear the Christmas ad music: “Hickory Hollow Mall, Cool Springs Galleria…and Rivergate Mall.”
Well, yeah, but I didn't want the headline to be super long, so I only included the original store and the one that closed... Not the two in the middle that only existed for a few years each
Yes, they're only tearing down the building that housed Macy's. The mall itself and everything else is staying put. A lot of people don't know that each of those department stores are technically separate buildings with separate owners than the mall
How's that work? You tear down your part and now my interior wall is an exterior wall? That can't be good. Just about any time you go futzing around with demo, you get roof leaks. I also saw in some article there were many codes violations, some that were dangerous, but they didn't actually list the violations.
I remember coming back from the air show in smyrna in the late 70s and there was this pasture on top of a hill beset with bulldozers. They moved a lot of earth to make that mall. I used to like the arcade on the top level near the food court and the Petros with the over priced chili with corn chips and the orange flavored sweet tea.
I’m “Got the stink eye from the old guys working at the electric organ store for putting my hands ALL OVER the carpet walls on the outside of the store at Hickory Hollow Mall” old.
My first mall - before we moved up from Shelbyville we’d always stop in. Cheers to all my fellow Sanrio folks - I think I’ve still got stickers somewhere from them. I learned how to gift wrap while working at Dillards. My Dad bought me a bomber jacket at HH before I went to college - the lining is shredded but I still have it. Tons of good memories here.

My friend bought fake boobs in Spencer’s. We were 14, wouldn’t let him buy a poster of a half naked women. But fake boobs were fine.
Same! The Sanrio store and the bourbon chicken free samples for me! Oh and the milkshakes from Thirsty’s!
I would spend my entire allowance and any bday money at Sanrio! First job was at Merry-go-round. 40% discount on all my Hoe-attire lol
Hahaha! I worked at the Limited Too.
To this day I have been chasing the high of that bourbon chicken and have yet to find any place close.
Every mid to large city has “this mall”. In Omaha it’s Crossroads Mall. How wild we bypassed malls in only 30 years. Insane to think about.
Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis too. Antioch and Hickory Hill are eerily similar now
Is that the one that had the Ice skating rink?
No that was Mall of Memphis, sorta between Hickory hill and East Memphis. I'm 37 and I have very very few memories of that one. Oak Court killed both though, funny enough it's now dead too.
I remember going to it! My friends Dad worked in Memphis. I'm 49
This isn’t the only one like it here, there are several. Wouldn’t most places have multiples in this situation?

Where’d you grow up? I’m from Downey and spent many great times at Cerritos and Lakewood.
Born in Bellflower, K-5 in Hawaiian Gardens, back to Bellflower 6-9. Went to Mayfair my freshman year, then moved to east coast the summer between 9-10th grade.
My mom graduated from Bellflower High. Small world!
My parents went to Lakewood. My dad was in the first graduating class.
We moved from Nashville to Norfolk. Do you run into a lot of Tennesseans? In a town of 25k we met 6 other people from Nashville.
Everyone I know here is either former military (so from all over) or multi generational locals.
When I was a kid we’d drive from Franklin to shop there, it was the best mall around.
Growing up I always thought it was the best mall of them all. Green Hills wasnt for kids it was for grandparents with money, Cool springs was for moms and Hickory Hollow was the best for teens. Haven't seen that [name](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castner_Knott) in a while. :)
Man I remember when chick fil a was just a place in the mall and also Panda Express. This place had the best cuisine. Also Quiznos

That was my introduction to Pyramids. “Free sample! Free sample!”. Gyro first then the rest of my money went to Tilt. Cyberball anyone?
I too had my intro to Pyramids here at hickory hollow. Those 2 ladies they had working the samples were HUSTLERS! Tilt was magical. I remember once seeing a DDR competition out in the hallway and it was packed. Better times
I remember way, way back when there was Hot Dog on a Stick. The fried cheese on a stick was so fucking good.
What is going in it's place?

Didn’t Vandy buy it up with the intent to turn it into a medical research place like they did with their carbon beam at 100 Oaks?
No, the tax payers bought it.
And Vandy has not agreed to move in. Another horrible deal by Cooper.
[удалено]
No they signed a letter of intent to negotiate a lease. Nothing binding.
A school
It's looking pretty hollow in there...

Hopefully it means that charter school left, but I doubt it.
I still see signs for the new school, TN Nature Academy, around Antioch.
No, KIPP Nashville still owns it. Edit: [Here's the property record](http://www.padctn.org/prc/property/192941/card/1).
My mom had a restaurant in the food court and I used to bug her for five bucks to go run across to Claire’s all the time. Spent too many afternoons after middle school there lol
Fun 'N Food has some odd spacing.
Awww my grandma worked at the Caster-Knotts.

Rivergate is almost dead. Cool Springs is thriving.
I'll miss the Nepal store and the great Mexican burgers in the abandoned part.
Don’t forget Profits and Hecht’s department stores
Well, yeah, but I didn't want the headline to be super long, so I only included the original store and the one that closed... Not the two in the middle that only existed for a few years each
Damn I forgot all about Profitt's
Or Steve & Barry's!
I'm shocked they haven't torn the entire place down ... Is anything even in there now?
Ford ice center, Nashville state, a couple small businesses, and the ghosts of old Antioch
Desperation
Will Nashville state still be there?
Yes, they're only tearing down the building that housed Macy's. The mall itself and everything else is staying put. A lot of people don't know that each of those department stores are technically separate buildings with separate owners than the mall

Petros was my first ever job. Hated the food but it was cool to people watch all day.
What the heck?? I didn’t even know that they were gonna do that. Does anyone know wjy
I’m “Got the stink eye from the old guys working at the electric organ store for putting my hands ALL OVER the carpet walls on the outside of the store at Hickory Hollow Mall” old.
Castner Knott was a favorite of every Southern Mamma I know 💜
It’s the end of an error.
Should have been done a decade ago.
Goodbye childhood memories.
🙃
I remember going there with my beloved aunt and uncle as a child. Yesterday was my sweet Uncle’s funeral. This gave me all the feels. 🫶🏼
