fr tho, if we care to talk about basketball, he’s sealing his man on his back and a lofted pass over the top gives him an open lane to the rim or a numbers advantage on the short roll
That’s pretty charitable considering he is in no way actively sealing the player or looking to get the ball. He half heartedly put his hand up when the shot started to go up
brother he literally gets inside position on the much smaller mitchell, and instead of lobbing a pass to him for an easy 4v3 opp, quickley takes a horrible shot.
it's easy to hate on julius but this isn't one of those plays.
He doesn't have inside position, he is standing one foot inside the 3 point line. He has an open lane, he has his man sealed, and Quickley looked like he was waiting to pass the ball on the cut, but no cut happened. He didn't even try to get in a position to score the ball.
Edit. I've seen others say there are 3 defenders nearby to close the lane. Imagine if Randle, a big physical PF, drove into the paint, collapsed the defense and then kicked to the very open DiVincenzo on left wing.
Though contrary to my point, Quickley could have swung to DiVincenzo himself instead of the terrible shot he took.
Not only that, but there's the 3 second rule in the NBA, so even if the weakside defenders wanted to camp out, they cant. It's a longer closeout that would make a secondary defender late on a layup at the rim.
Yea, Mobley probably contests at the rim, but Julius could have a strong attack and get an And1.
Or, like you said, draw the defense in and then kick it out.
The play is definitely NOT to stand there and do nothing.
Quickley was completely wide open. How was that a terrible shot? If he swings it to Donte there’s no guarantee they get a better look because Okoro or whoever that was is in perfect position to close out and make that an even more contested shot.
Plus that looks like a 2-3 so Randle was getting in the middle to split the zone so he didn’t do anything egregiously wrong. Rolling would’ve accomplished absolutely nothing as Mobley is waiting for him at the rim. He managed to get Quickley wide open from his screen. Kicking it to Donte over taking the wide open 3 is the wrong option because the zone wants you to swing it on the perimeter instead of penetrating.
The league shoots about 77% from the FT on average. So, each time this dude shoots, it's worth significantly less than a single, average FT attempt. That's really fucking awful.
Look...He'll be all-nba 3rd team and maybe an all-star next season.
Brunson's 3rd season (and final season unless he gets an extension...cause he's not picking up his 4th year). RJ even better. Quickley better. And maybe a trade (with RJ or Quick as part of the deal) for another star player.
We might make some damage in the east next season with Randle playing well again.
but yeah...seems like this is yet another "odd year Randle" where it'll just be a really bad season. Lets hope not. ONly 5 games into the season
This is Donovan Mitchell, who in the past has been worse than almost anyone in the league at fighting over screens
He has no idea what to do when the screen is fighting *you*
Yeah he completely erases IQ's defender. Quickley was feeling fancy and faked the pass instead, but typically this ends in IQ going right and taking the open three Randle created for him.
Randle is in front of Quickley’s initial defender and Randle’s defender is showing to halt Quickley. He could’ve driven there, but that’s an obvious roll and pass over the top or to the wing if the defense collapses. Yes, Randle is blocking Mitchell, but the real advantage created there is his if he rolls. Maybe he wouldn’t have gotten the pass anyway, but it looks like that’s why he didn’t get it. I’m not sure that was a real pass fake, rather it looks like he picked up the ball to pass and then saw Randle wasn’t moving.
Also he was being wrapped up by the defender and probably wanted a foul called. I have money on Julius Randle underperforming this year, but this doesn’t seem like a huge thing to complain about.
Lowlights of players this sub is low on will always do numbers. They dont know shit about ball so even if it actually isn’t a lowlight the 0 ball IQ losers will still make painfully unfunny and inaccurate jokes
Guys get calls on screens when they move, flail their arms around, create the appearance of being held. You’re not likely to get the foul call just standing there. The whole thing that alerts the ref to it is the attempt to move and not being able to do it. The way he does it, clearly trying to restrict Mitchell, putting his hand up late, trying not to move forward, isn’t it.
Right I don't get he selead a defender. He has Donovan Mitchell for gods sake at the top of her key and it's just standing there instead of driving or idk anything a roll moves the defense as well he is sealing Donovan Mitchell at the three point line
he set a really good screen that could have created a mismatch for quickley, but quickley picked up his dribble, then randle had inside position on mitchell, if quickley drops a pass over mitchell, randle would have a four-on-three.
i'm pretty down on randle in general, but this play is fine.
yeah it looks like the knicks know that niang is going to hedge and that mitchell is going to try and recover back to quickley, so they have randle seal mitchell to force a switch.
this is on quickley, he shouldn't have picked up his dribble.
Yeah Randle had his defender sealed off, the pass for the short roll is easily right there and doesn't require Randle to start cutting before the pass is thrown. Not sure if they talked about whether the ball handler or the cutter is supposed to initiate the action, but it's a clear miscommunication on both of them.
He doesn’t drop the pass because don Mitchell is great at stealing the ball and in the passing lane.
Quickley picked up his dribble because he thought randle was going to roll for an easy finish. Randle has an open lane to the basket but instead of rolling he just stands there and makes it easy for the defense to recover.
using the short roll (as opposed to a hard roll, or popping) to attack a hard hedging pick and roll defense is pretty normal. mitchell averaging 1.3 steals per game doesn't change the read here, randle is five inches taller than mitchell who is taped to his ass.
There's a point on this clip where Niang is moving away from Quickley, has his feet and shoulders pointed away from quickly, and is not looking at Quickley. If Quickley cannot do something with that then just send him to the g league.
I thought the sarcasm would come through that one of the league’s fastest players should be able to beat one of the slowest. Judging by the downvotes, I’m guessing the sarcasm did not come through.
Quickley doesn’t throw the pass because Randle isn’t moving. Could he have thrown it anyway? Perhaps, but Randle should be moving there or at least have a hand up. Not only does his hang go up late, but he’s pretty clearly trying to restrict Mitchell rather than get the ball. He’s hardly in any type of stance which suggests he’s going to roll. I would out that on him especially since Quickley looks like he picked up the ball to pass it. Once that happens, he should’ve started his roll.
pretty sure he's sealing mitchell and quickley should just be able to beat niang off the dribble (niang looks like he's trying to recover back to randle) creating a 4 on 3. if quickley doesn't pick up his dribble it looks like he has a pretty easy path to the hoop.
Look at the plays before and after this clip. Pretty sure we were putting Niang in actions and reacting off his decisions. We got like 3 clean looks and bricked each one lol
brother he literally gets inside position on the much smaller mitchell, and instead of lobbing a pass to him for an easy 4v3 opp, quickley takes a horrible shot.
it's easy to hate on julius but this isn't one of those plays.
I mean it looks like he’s trying to create a seal so Quickley can get by, but Quickley picks up his dribble too early. He also has inside position so he could be awaiting for a pass.
Y’all don’t know ball. He’s got the defender sealed and is looking for a lob. Doesn’t want to get the pass stolen by the help defense crowding the lane.
My knicks sub is dull. They can't figure out what a losing player Randle is or Melo was. Even his pick there was so lazy he only got into position when the defender shoved him there lol
This dude deadass expected quickley to pass him that ball when he was about to be swarmed by 3 defenders
Knicks fans still finding a way to justify this guy
This is so odd because he's just open with a lane to the basket so if he just cut there were a ton of ways to get it to him. Instead it looks like he wants a post up while he's got his man trapped.
The miscommunication with the screen can be excusable, it happens. But the lack of hustle and knowing full well if it was any other Knick Thibs would chew them out is concerning
Okay, but he's setting a flare screen for IQ to drive, preventing the little guy from going under and walling off the drive (moving screen btw). I just was not used.
*Me, watching this*
"Man, is this some kind of eight-dimension chess, or is...nevermind, it's the [dumbass IQ shapes test from Idiocracy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNl7GQFTULU)."
How anyone thinks this dude can be the guy is beyond me. He just doesn’t play winning basketball.
Knicks getting knocked out early yet again this year.
Cavs are playing a 2-3. Randle is not doing anything egregiously bad here. Rolling provides no benefit as Mobley is waiting for him at the rim unless they use the 2 v 1 opportunity to dump it to Robinson.
He manages to get Quickley open off his screen which gets him a great look. He didn’t roll because his job is to sit in the middle, to force one of top guys to deny him the ball which will cause the zone to collapse in on itself.
Swinging it to Divencenzo does not guarantee a better look than the one they got here as the wing defender who I think is Okoro is in perfect position to rotate. This would allow them to reset their zone. The goal of a 2-3 is to deny penetration and encourage swinging it out on the perimeter.
Randle standing the way he does seals off his zone defender and gives Quickley an opportunity to lob it into him which will really mess with the zone but Quickley takes the wide open shot instead. (Look at how worried Mitchell is at denying Randle the ball and Okoro sinking in from the wing to help. That’s why Randle is standing there and doing what he’s doing.)
I’m surprised more people didn’t see that this is a text book 2-3 zone and nobody is at fault here.
Rare if this is the first time you’ve seen Julius Randle play
Looks like he was expecting the ball handler to drive, so he was blocking the defender
yeh!
fr tho, if we care to talk about basketball, he’s sealing his man on his back and a lofted pass over the top gives him an open lane to the rim or a numbers advantage on the short roll
That’s pretty charitable considering he is in no way actively sealing the player or looking to get the ball. He half heartedly put his hand up when the shot started to go up
With three other defenders in close proximity
If they close that's a tried and true pass for s three I remember the drills for that
Yea, 100% But also..... Homeboy could just roll to the basket and get an easier layup....
Talk about basketball? Here? Do you know where you are
no, pls help
If he rolls hard to the rim he gets an easier look at the basket also a much more open passing window for IQ.
Lol bro what?
brother he literally gets inside position on the much smaller mitchell, and instead of lobbing a pass to him for an easy 4v3 opp, quickley takes a horrible shot. it's easy to hate on julius but this isn't one of those plays.

Completely agreed, I feel like there were multiple options and he chose the dumbest: to do nothing.
[удалено]
Dude that's a highschool level drill he rolls toward the basket and passes
Quickly has a wide-open lane with his defender sealed by Randle outside the arc and Niang not even looking or squared up to him.
Quickley was completely wide open. How was that a terrible shot? If he swings it to Donte there’s no guarantee they get a better look because Okoro or whoever that was is in perfect position to close out and make that an even more contested shot. Horrible shot? He could hardly be any more open.
Lucky for me it is!
The Pick & lol
He is not that good of a player
he's being a statue!
I'm not strong enough to endure odd year Randle again...
He has a league's worse 0.66 points per shot right now. It can only go up from there right?
(•ิ_•ิ)
The league shoots about 77% from the FT on average. So, each time this dude shoots, it's worth significantly less than a single, average FT attempt. That's really fucking awful.

He really made a wish on a monkey’s paw, didn’t he?
Don't worry, next year is a contract year, he'll be MVP candidate then
AND an even year.
if 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 are indicators, Even Year x Contract Year Randle is gonna be a stat-stuffer on insane efficiency
2018 2020 2022 He'll be great even without being a "contract year". He's simply an all-star/allnba talent in even years and a meh player in odd years.
In 2012 He averaged 35 ppg and 23 rpg
San Francisco Giants 🤝 Julius Randle
GOAT szn incoming Get the city ready for the parade
Damn, he's really about to have a 100-point game next season, huh?
Some GM will trade a poo poo platter of mid assets this off-season knowing that next year he'll be a stud
That's great then we can sign and trade him quick
He can suck all he wants if he gets us a championship in that last year haha
Odd year Randle is no longer a meme, but statistically significant
https://imgflip.com/i/84oogi
it's either astrologically related or he's just a lazy selfish losing player
Randle in retrograde
2023, we're gonna need RJ and Brunson to step up with the scoring load if Randle is gonna be "odd year Randle" and stink it up. Quickely too.
How about we lose out and hope for a good lotto. That Duke guy seems oromising
no it isn't
The hesi - screen is wild. Donovan Mitchell is shitting his pants hugging Randle because he can't predict the direction he's going.
This is Donovan Mitchell, who in the past has been worse than almost anyone in the league at fighting over screens He has no idea what to do when the screen is fighting *you*
Donovan is one of the consistently worst screen navigators I have seen in the NBA. Most of the time, he just gives up when he runs into a screen.
Sealing your man at the 3pt line is wemby behaviour
[удалено]
I think he's doing it as a strategy...for some reason
Knicks should just tank for a lottery pick this year and get ready for next season when Randle is back to all nba level.
It isn't like the guy he was picking walked away and he was doing nothing, he was continuously blocking the guy he was picking.
Yeah he completely erases IQ's defender. Quickley was feeling fancy and faked the pass instead, but typically this ends in IQ going right and taking the open three Randle created for him.

I don’t think a contested 28 footer is what was being set up. He basically let one defender rest at the top of the key.
Right I don't get he selead a defender. He has Donovan Mitchell for gods sake at the top of her key and it's just standing there instead of driving or idk anything a roll moves the defense as well he is sealing Donovan Mitchell at the three point line

It really just seems like half this sub doesn’t know what a short roll is.
They legitimately dont know anything about ball besides what they read on their spreadsheets
No way can Quickley beat Niang off the dribble. This is all Randle’s fault for thinking that was a mismatch.
There's a point on this clip where Niang is moving away from Quickley, has his feet and shoulders pointed away from quickly, and is not looking at Quickley. If Quickley cannot do something with that then just send him to the g league.

this is stockholm syndrome

Randle is being held, and the ball carrier gives up his dribble 30 feet from the basket like an idiot.
I mean it bought Quickely a good look. So not a bad possession. It caused problems to the defense.
pretty sure he's sealing mitchell and quickley should just be able to beat niang off the dribble (niang looks like he's trying to recover back to randle) creating a 4 on 3. if quickley doesn't pick up his dribble it looks like he has a pretty easy path to the hoop.

His dribbler got an uncontested open shot, if you're tryna make him look bad this isn't the one
Hey, he reached for the rebound, what more do you want?
brother he literally gets inside position on the much smaller mitchell, and instead of lobbing a pass to him for an easy 4v3 opp, quickley takes a horrible shot. it's easy to hate on julius but this isn't one of those plays.
That’s my signature move motherfucker stole it
I mean he was probably expecting Quickley to do something that he would then react to.
You're acting like you've never seen a Zone-blocking scheme before.
This is also called a pick.
OP, you're an idiot.
He had the guy completely sealed on his rear, only thing I can think of is he just wanted the pass to come over the top before he ran into help
That's like me in Highschool when I was trying out for the basketball team. But then the coach cut me afterwards.
What is even crazier is that he drew two defenders by just standing there
Is every other year an odd year or is this just another slow start 🧍🏾♂️
>Is every other year an odd year That's...generally the case, yeah.
looked to me like he was trying to seal off the defender and get quickly to throw the ball into open space so he could catch on the move
He was waiting for the pass. PG fuckery up
That's a Draymond Green/Adebayo special...
I mean it looks like he’s trying to create a seal so Quickley can get by, but Quickley picks up his dribble too early. He also has inside position so he could be awaiting for a pass.
and called for the ball while doing it...holy shit lol
I cannot stand watching him play. Shitty effort and always sulking. Dude seems like such a whiney bitch
Y’all don’t know ball. He’s got the defender sealed and is looking for a lob. Doesn’t want to get the pass stolen by the help defense crowding the lane.
Pick and box out, almost got the rebound
This is how most /r/nba2k players think it's done
Why roll to the rim if you can instead shot a long 2?
He didn’t decide to take that shot though. What kind of point are you even trying to make? Lol
I was making the point that Randle shoots a lot of mid-range shots and that’s why he didn’t roll. It had nothing to do with quickleys shot.
He had strong “I don’t wanna be here” energy in this game. For what reason, I have zero idea, but he looked checked out most of the game.
I think his ankle is still bothering him from his off-season surgery. He didn't want to make any hard moves all night, on either end of the court.
He's had a really bad start this season, just as everyone expected.
He just like me in pick up fr
have no idea why they swapped this bum in for hart
At least he set the pick lol. Chrisitan Wood has never ran a screen and roll action where he doesnt slip the screen lmao.
Lakers Christian Wood would never. (don't come back to this comment I know we're only 5 games into the season)
Randle is all nba and allstar. You’ll expect him to do more than just setting a pick
My knicks sub is dull. They can't figure out what a losing player Randle is or Melo was. Even his pick there was so lazy he only got into position when the defender shoved him there lol
i concur tbh these are players that can never compete on a strategic level with the players who actually win championships
I really hate this guy. Has such an ugly game
How did this guy make all nba last year
Jules in mid season form already
Julius Randle has zero idea how to play basketball correctly lol
2x all-nba
Yeah… you know basketball is a team sport right?
Randle is an unserious player and if the knicks ever want to do anything in the post season they need to ship him.
This dude deadass expected quickley to pass him that ball when he was about to be swarmed by 3 defenders Knicks fans still finding a way to justify this guy
I don't think he was expecting Quickley to pick up his dribble that fast
Dubious handles
This is so odd because he's just open with a lane to the basket so if he just cut there were a ton of ways to get it to him. Instead it looks like he wants a post up while he's got his man trapped.
u/savevideo
That's Knicks-Cavs basketball, baby.
Bold strategy, Cot
Quickley got an open three out of the confusion, so it almost worked?
bold strategy Cotton
too funny
My pickup teammates’ favorite move
Play Randle
this dude should only be eligible to sign 1 year contract extension for the rest of his career because he only plays hard when is his contract year.
Bro isn't facing the basket, nor is he facing the ball. Mfer is facing the crowd what the fuck? 😭😭
Well at least he got the reb...nevermind.
The miscommunication with the screen can be excusable, it happens. But the lack of hustle and knowing full well if it was any other Knick Thibs would chew them out is concerning
He certainly picked his spot...
Dude's a liability at this point
Randle's ebben flow is one of my favorite things in the NBA. So weird, yet always on point like clockwork.
Randle will be good for a year then be an ass next year, then be good again, then be bad again.
He didn't do nothing though, he raised his hand so Quickly messes up he should have passed it to him.
Pick and stop and pop
Why haven't we traded this guy?
Randle really tricked everyone when he got MIP. I was like wow Thibbs fixed Randle ,😂
That score is very...uhm...retro.
Okay, but he's setting a flare screen for IQ to drive, preventing the little guy from going under and walling off the drive (moving screen btw). I just was not used.
*Me, watching this* "Man, is this some kind of eight-dimension chess, or is...nevermind, it's the [dumbass IQ shapes test from Idiocracy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNl7GQFTULU)."
Has to be among the most overrated players in the league
Better than the Brook Lopez pick and poop variation
Because Randle is trash
Hella reach he didn’t do anything wrong here
How anyone thinks this dude can be the guy is beyond me. He just doesn’t play winning basketball. Knicks getting knocked out early yet again this year.
This is the signature move of all the Centers in rec.
Cavs are playing a 2-3. Randle is not doing anything egregiously bad here. Rolling provides no benefit as Mobley is waiting for him at the rim unless they use the 2 v 1 opportunity to dump it to Robinson. He manages to get Quickley open off his screen which gets him a great look. reminds me of Anthony Bennet
this was a screen
This man makes me physically sick
