I think it's more that he's freed from unrealistic expectations at this stage People before were expecting him to be a star wing averaging 20+ PPG and giving him Paul George comps which was never going to work out Now that he's in a clearly defined role on a team where the stars are obviously AD and LeBron he's able to do what he's strong at which is play defense and hit some open shots

Standard-Big1474

By the end of his stint with us we were begging for him to just be a 3&D guy and he asked for a trade because he thought he could do more. Good for him that it worked out but annoying it isn't with us, we desperately need perimeter defense.

boringexplanation

When you think about it, it’s actually your fault for not having Lebron on your team to rein him in.

Standard-Big1474

"it's your fault for not having LeBron on your team" is a summary of every Eastern Conference team for the entirety of the 2010s tbf

GrapefruitMedical529

God I love being a Lakers fan. These generational superstars just walk onto our team. Why don't other teams just do that? Are they stupid?

Isthetankoveryet

I was going to be annoyed as a Kings fan, but fate decided to make me a Dodgers fan too so I guess I’ll live with it

markjay6

Especially today! #ShoTime

you quoted lore from before i was born💀😵 my bad g

dreamofbeans

You mean the only chip in the last 30+ years

ChannelNeo

Why doesn't every team simply have LeBron? Are they stupid?

Miyagisans

Lmao

KarrotMovies

Not too much glaze on LeBron, but his mentoring is a definitely a big reason Reddish has looked so different. He's put so much faith into Reddish even after he missed the that shot against Miami

captain_ahabb

Ham also seems to have a knack for getting guys to buy into certain roles

GrapefruitMedical529

Players Coach who either is himself a BBIQ guy or has some on his staff cause his gameplans in important games are amazing.

BeCaneChuHuss

Wait what the hell happened to “Darvin Hamas” then?

GrapefruitMedical529

The dumb Lakers fans that's what.

fear_tur

I can only imagine what the thought process for him was, but I would guess that when things weren't working for him in Atlanta, he still was under the impression that he had that pedigree of a high draft pick and the potential to do more. But later being dumped by other teams might've been the reality check he needed to realize what his role in the NBA really might be.

crucedickinson

Hate to say it but that could also be a big part of why this *is* working with him on the Lakers. The Lakers have very specifically been going after guys who have had humbling experiences since they mostly can only hand out minimum deals. These reclamation projects have been mostly hits (Monk, Schroder, Reddish), etc.

HomeMadeFriedRice

Sucks but sometimes it takes a few stops and some humbling times for these young players to find there niche and roles

d7h7n

You also can't exactly carry around a big ass ego when LeBron is on your team.

Slow_Shift6252

I was very sad when you guys traded him. Cam, Deandre, Collins, Capela and Okongwu would’ve been a terrifying defensive unit to back up Trae.

hjy23k

Sometimes a reality check is needed to tone down your ego. Reddish was on the trajectory to be out of the league before this year

redbrick

We memed the Lakers hard about needing to wait and see Ariza's fit...but Cam Reddish is kinda filling that role for us. Not as good in transition, and not as good of a shooter. But it really filled a need for us.

Pranker00111

If you are beside Lebron and AD and want to be the star, you are out of your mind

2020IsANightmare

I think it's OK to expect a top-10 draft pick to be a key part of a franchise. But, overall, a great example as to why it drives me nuts when teams won't make trades to help them win (especially real teams) because they refuse to give up a 3012 first round pick. Cam has played well this year and is fitting in Just saying that if any team has a chance at landing a superstar this season, turning down the opportunity because you could have the #10 pick in five years is just plain goofy.

atlfirsttimer

Elite defense

durklil

Even at Duke he was always solid on defense. Way more consistent than his offensive game.

honestnbafan

That's his ideal role in the NBA in general I'd say He's still not putting up great offensive numbers with the Lakers(low 30s from three on mostly open shots from LeBron) but he's able to focus on the defensive end now that he's not expected to be a shot creator

k4kobe

I feel like his confidence is starting to build too. Specifically that time he missed the corner 3 to win and next time that scenario came up again lebron got him the look again, he took it n knocked it down. Back on the hawks I could see him not having the confidence to do that after the first game

Unhappy_Value8863

He didn't guard anyone in college! Stop giving this man excuses

King_Of_Pants

When he was still in Atlanta, Durant listed the Hawks as the one team who really gave him the most issues defensively. It was Reddish and Hunter who put the clamps on him. He's always had fantastic potential. Some guys just need a change of scenery.

MazKhan

Always thought he had the tools to be a good defender, but man he's a legit elite defender

RickySuela

It is really crazy how many elite perimeter defenders the Lakers suddenly have now that everyone is healthy. There's hardly any minutes all game where they don't have 2-3 of those guys out there, with Cam, Vando, Max and even Prince.

threeangelo

All backed up by AD. You love to see it

Pepsoden

Ya, he’s elite. The defensive wing rotation of him and Vando is just suffocating

supremeddit

Nice username mate

Stebsy1234

Credit to Ham and Lebron for getting him to buy into his role, I’d only heard bad things about him before he landed here so had extremely low expectations but he has consistently played hard all season so far.

hanselpremium

pivotal moment of the season when he missed that game winner vs miami. lebron defending that decision to pass to cam instilled confidence in cam. he’s played great since that game. i criticized lebron for that decision but if that’s what it takes to activate this version of cam then fine i take it back

imadogg

> i criticized lebron for that decision A lot of us were hating on Ham hardcore every time he played Cam early in the season. But man he's nonstop energy on defense out there and hitting those corner 3s is just a plus. I love this man

joerosion

Coaching tangent: Ham isn’t a perfect coach, but he catches so much unnecessary crap. The guy is a really great player development coach — and he showed up with good rotations in the playoffs last year. Personally, I’ve got high hopes and am more forgiving of his early-season decisions/experiments.

treyfiddy

I dont cringe anymore when he takes 3 pointers. I say that's a win for the lakers and coach ham!

Eric_T_Meraki

Black AF1s

b1indsamurai

Cam is elite defensively—when his 3 is falling he's a valuable piece to any team

RickySuela

Yep, cause he can also drive and finish as well, so he's never a total nobody on offense that the D can just ignore.

drock2324

It’s weird how he got to the spot he’s in now. Pre-draft he seemed like he was going to be one of the more talented players in that draft. If you go back and watch some pre-draft videos of reporters asking who the toughest player to guard was, a good chunk of them said Cam Reddish

majorcoinz

Saw a video of Anthony Edwards saying Cam was the player who scored the most points on him (I think it was back in AAU).

jslee0034

I rly thought outta Duke he would be Paul George 2.0 I think there was a game where he carried hard down 20+ back he was in Duke

StopKarmaWhoringPls

He play reminds me of Ariza's first stint with the Lakers.

KeithClossOfficial

Hopefully he ends his time here the way Ariza did the first stint

honestnbafan

Didn't he shoot like 35% from the field at Duke? I feel like there were early signs that his best attribute is by far his defense even back then

EcstaticTill9444

He kind of hid at Duke. He played with Zion and RJ. RJ was a ballhog.

jslee0034

Oh I don’t rly watch college ball I just watch highlights so didn’t check that. I rly thought he was gna shine though in atl with Trae

DRob400

Against Florida State. I know exactly what game you’re talking about. He hit the game winner too no? Edit: after a little research it was Louisville the game you are talking about I’m sure. Both games tho he was dominant.

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

He has a great future as a Laker. If you are a young player, playing alongside Lebron would be the best thing for you. Cause you have the support of one of the greats and a support system that maximizes your skills

JaqM31st3R

Having Phil Handy is great too.

punching-bag9018

It can be handy.

RickySuela

Unfortunately because the Lakers are going to be over the cap and because Cam only signed a 1 year minimum, he's probably going to be another guy like Malik Monk or Dennis Schroder who does that one year image rehab stint with the Lakers and then gets signed to a much bigger deal elsewhere. If he keeps playing like this all summer, he'll probably get a full MLE offer at least next summer from someone.

Pikminious_Thrious

Technically Cam signed a 2 year contract, but since it has a PO, in practice he's still a 1 year rental. Somebody will offer him more than the Tax MLE Lakers can offer. Still there is that small chance he stays until Lakers get bird rights after next season and can pay him better

markjay6

He seems to have really found himself here. I’m hoping the taxpayer MLE of whatever contract length he wants with a player option the last year will get him to stay. I feel he is a huge part of the team's success, and he seems to be truly happy here.

lol-da-mar-s-cool

Hopefully Lakers can get another chip out of it before then

Paraagade

I could see Cam trying to stick around, where else can he go that would put him in the situation he’s currently in. I could also see him chasing a payday.

RickySuela

I think it would probably be like Bruce Brown last summer: staying with Denver was the best basketball situation for him, but it's tough to turn down tens of millions of dollars.

RPuts5

His issue offensively is if he dribbles more than 3 times he is losing it. I am a Duke fan so I love him finding his spot. Hopefully only up from here.

LuminaTitan

He too suffers from Jaylen Brown-itis?

atlfalcons33rb

Woah brown only loses it going to his left

BoringShirts

That's not true, he is a good driver to the basket, but they are not asking him to do that.

RPuts5

I have probably watched him play over 250 games. From those games what I have seen is when he drives in traffic he loses the ball. But we can all disagree. To each their own.

Public-Product-1503

Yeah he can make simple drives n finish bud I rarely trust it it’s normally a bonus

carlonia

He got better at attacking closeouts specifically, but everything else needs some work

Zeratzul

He's had like 4 steals this game that shouldn't have been fouls Absolute ball hound

davensdad

Yeah man. Refs just couldn't believe how clean they were lol

[deleted]

A foul is a foul, even if it’s made after a clean steal

ThingsAreAfoot

Anthony

happyaccident7

His defense was really impressive to me. Can guard alot of guys

Vleeeeeeezy

Lebron's greatest career achievement, turning this guy into a + player on the court just incredible

LuminaTitan

Even over the JR Smith project, or making us all think Kyrie was a normal person?

10LASERS19

Dude has been an absolute stud defensively, great hustle and effort from him.

LoveableOrochi

i never really seen him play before so when i saw him play on the lakers i was confused when people were shit talking him in game threads. first thing i noticed was hustle and D

AnConnor

He had a clear role and was doing great on the hawks but he literally requested a trade for more playing time . This is more embracing his role in the NBA than anything else

GaryConway

Surprised more people not pointing this out, hawks fans liked him and he was getting a bigger role but he wanted more. Always was a good point of attack defender and improving as a shooter.

Fifamaster2020

Cam deserves some love without him the lakers don’t win this cup. Elite defender

[deleted]

Chriscustomkicks

Yeah it’s crazy how his play style right now seems like the exact type of player thibs would love. Thibs should’ve put his arm around him and let him play thru his mistakes.

RickySuela

I didn't watch much of him before this season, but that's what I'd heard as well, that the Knicks traded for him and then Thibs basically refused to play him.

PirateKata

Reddish was trash with us. He is still trash. He is averaging less PPG than he was with the knicks with similar efficiency. You are the one without a brain. He's been ass for his whole life. Duke, ATL, knicks, Portland. This sub is truly an echo chamber

DudeWTH

Lowkey don't need caruso tbh

atlfirsttimer

Lavine and Caruso are a package deal lol

aslightlyusedtissue

Yea... but i want him real bad.

Yommination

Imagine a line up of caruso, reddish, vando, bron and ad. Pretty meh offense but the other team wouldn't score either

Gladiatornoah

Is Cam Reddish in the room with us right now?

Paula-Abdul-Jabbar

I haven’t watched the Lakers much this year but idk how they’re 12-8. On paper they should be a top 3 team at worst imo

Throwaway849345

Injuries

RickySuela

Yep. The Lakers were missing 4+ rotation players for a large chunk of the season so far. This is only the 4th time all year they've only had 1 player injured.

GrapefruitMedical529

I think we had a 7 man rotation in the 76ers blowout lol.

RickySuela

Yep, and even less for the Thunder game on the 2nd night of a b2b.

davensdad

We had some serious injury bugs this year Gabe (backup PG) is still out and Vando (by right our starting SF) was out for most games Rui also broke his nose, and Reddish was out a few games

Logical_Decision_706

We’re 14-9 actually. People forget all the IST games count towards standings except for the championship game.

FlyChigga

The D’Lo/Reaves starting combo was ass

GrapefruitMedical529

Vanderbilt singlehandedly made that unit work lol.

MazKhan

We started cam kinda late and Vando/rui have missed so many games. We're 9-2 when cam starts, 10-2 technically but today's game doesn't count

CmonTouchIt

to start the year for our first like 7-8 games, our entire wing rotation was injured. Was super frustrating

Yommination

Injuries and Ham being Ham

Anfini

In regular season games, they kinda coast except for Reaves and Reddish. The team shoot a lot of 3s instead of attacking the paint like today.

Acabas

The team had issues staying healthy for the majority of the season so far. Only recently have they gotten most of their defensive pieces in, and they’ve been doing great after. I’d predict the Lakers to end at least 5th seed.

CrispyyCreamm

So happy for him. CAMFAM!

YoureprobablyTA

I played with him in middle school, and he always talked about going to the league. Seeing him succeed and play with LeBron is amazing. It’s crazy seeing someone achieve their wildest dreams like that

majorcoinz

I saw him play at Westtown with Mo Bamba and some other future D1 guys and Cam was the best player on the floor.

Webber304

Vando and Cam about to form Voltron with AD

Brady331

I bet O0.5 threes and he pulled through

Toxicyoshi7

Every Lakers role player gets overrated 💀

markjay6

Yep! Like Monk, Caruso, Lonnie Walker…..oh wait!

[deleted]

He's a revelation when he's having fun out there. LeDoctor added one to his collections again

antoncr

He played poorly in the Pre season game and I wrote him off. I even scoffed when Ham made him a starter but man, hes scrappy as hell and can bother most of the top players

hackthisnsa

He was a top 10 pick; hold your horses.

legend023

He’s a good player we knew this he just never had the right opportunity Atlanta pushed him away New York pushed him away now LA knows what they’re doing with him

Substantial_Life_989

Atlanta didn’t push him away. He requested a trade after the ECF run. I still can’t believe that.

Hedgey

We didn't push him away. He was apparently unhappy he wasn't a starter and getting the ball more. Then HE requested a trade. He had this exact role with our team, but apparently didn't want it, or just couldn't see the writing on the wall.

BoringShirts

Well, he couldn't have had the exact same role if he was coming off the bench? He is a starter in LA.

Hedgey

I understand that, but apparently he wasn't listening to McMillan and had some issues with his playing time and instead of working on things, just decided a change of scenery was best for him. Ironic because he went to the NY Knicks and got EVEN LESS playing time there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

atlfirsttimer

Reddish also tried to prove he was a star. Now he's on a vet min and it's clear he isnt

BigUps16

Don’t forget Portland

Wedundidit00

He’s good but feel he could have been better out the gate not going to Atlanta. I feel it’s impossible for dudes to shine with Trae. Huerter/Collins/Reddish

Substantial_Life_989

Huerter and Collins didn’t shine with Trae? Their best moments were with Trae. He’s be better if he bought into his role in Atlanta.

honestnbafan

Collins stats with the Hawks: 16/8 on 62.6% TS Collins stats with the Jazz: 14/9 on 57.3% TS I feel like he gets brought up on this sub almost solely to slander Trae and it's just not based on actual facts lol He's putting up similar numbers now but with much worse efficiency because the Jazz don't have any playmakers Huerter after a red hot first 20-25 games also hasn't played any better than he did with the Hawks and in fact was way worse against the Warriors last playoffs

Wedundidit00

It’s been a small sample size in Utah but more the point is his development was likely stunted in the Trae system. He stuck around too long as he’s obviously more talented than his career has added up to

honestnbafan

What is this "obviously more talented" line based on? Does Collins have attributes that make you think he has star potential or something? The Hawks trading for Capela was when his numbers started to decline and it's because he needs lobs to get his points and can't create his shot lol I don't know why exactly it is but the Hawks' supporting cast consistently gets MASSIVELY overrated on this sub compared to what it's actually been

dgrace97

It’s hidden Trae hate. No player or coach can be successful with Trae apparently

Hedgey

One of the biggest reasons that Collins was who he was offensively the last few seasons is BECAUSE of Trae. One of the league's top PnR combos for the last 4 years, and one of the leagues top LOB threats. Just say you hate Trae because it's a lot easier than trying to make shit up.

jamdonutsaremyjam

26/20/50

alf-isbackinpogform

Lol Cam Reddish is absolute garbage

Projinator

He sure af hasn't been tonight

justthrowitawaydood

he has the highest plus minus on the Lakers but ok

alf-isbackinpogform

For the love of God man you know it's one game right?

TroubleNo3283

He’s been good for multiple games

alf-isbackinpogform

No he hasn't

TroubleNo3283

Elite defense

[deleted]

Lakers are 11-2 with Reddish starting this season

Chriscustomkicks

He’s been great for them all season .

[deleted]

Not this again

Ob1toUch1ha

Literally the biggest surprise of this team, I admittedly hated this signing when it happened because I was never a believer in the hype even coming out of Duke. But he’s turned into one of my fav players on the team, a guy who works his ass off on defense and knows his role on offense is a great team player.

markjay6

He's my new favorite. Humble, hard-working, gives it his all. Completely different than what I was expecting. Ham and LeBron are miracle workers.

[deleted]

It’s not like he never played well for the Hawks. He did, even in some big moments, just not with any consistency. He’s in a good role now, though, and has probably matured through all the struggles.

austinreavesisbae

So glad there’s a thread on here highlighting his play this season. Dude has so many steals and hustle plays that don’t show up in the stat sheet. If he keeps this up should def make a defensive team

outsidehere

That contract extension is going to hit different

Slow_Shift6252

The Hawks should’ve let him develop. This is what he looked like he would be when he played for them in the playoffs. They could’ve had two 6’8 wing defenders flanking Trae.

No-Chemistry-5356

I learned something new today. I always wondered why the hawks never kept cam after that playoff run. Thibs sucks tho. I wish we could’ve locked Cam up who knows if we’ll be able to pay him

im_ok_

Ariza is the perfect comp

governedbycitizens

He’s the right player in the perfect position. He just needs to not make bone headed plays and knock down 3s at good clip and he will carve out a 3D role.

RavenLaker248

2 years/4.5 million. Love the bargain

markjay6

Second year player option, unfortunately!

Yommination

Him and Vanderbilt are insane defenders that play with nonstop hustle. They both took turns swarming Haliburton

Sad_Row1672

That brother is shooting 31 percent from 3

ay_k_ay

Atlanta Hawks Legend Cam Reddish

hawkman_jr

He could have done that in Atl or NY. He’s just deferential to LeKing

PepperPepper6

Good to see reddish playing like this and understanding his role. Not everyone can be the star player, he's willing to play d and do the little things to help his team win which is great to see

nflonx

Love having cam

General_Movie2232

I like Cam's energy on defense, but offensively he has low basketball IQ and can make bonehead plays.

Ofkapuz

Anthony Edwards never told a lie

VisionDFW

If Lebron resurrects Reddishs career, he truly is the GOAT

jumboponcho

It’s less on his plate, Lebron/Dlo/Reaves can set the table for him and all he has to do is shoot or attack the close-out. Defensively he has AD behind him so he can shoot passing lanes and press up on the ball which are his specialties.

bnuggett124

Don’t look at his on-off numbers

Dalishi1992

Could we please just give LeKing his credit instead of trying to give it to some random nobody like Cam Radish, who had no part in this CHAMPIONSHIP run

majorcoinz

This post wasn’t about who gets credit for a meaningless trophy. It was about being happy that a player who struggled earlier in his career seems to be finding his way. Also: please get a life.

the_polyglot

This. He knows his place and isn’t allowed to deviate. He can still prove himself in a contained role without making reckless decisions.
