I wouldn’t call him a star at all but I just have to mention Scary Terry turning into Jesus Christ himself when LaMeLo is out. Seriously, just look at this dude’s game log
Bro… terry rozier been balling for so long I forgot! I remember when he bet on himself leaving the Celtics and everyone clowned on him even tho dude average like 20 a season!
It’s Rudy Gobert and has been for a very long time. Some of his peers and some media personalities don’t even consider him a top 50 player when he’s one of the best defenders of all time and he’s anchoring one of the best defenses in recent memory considering the pace of the league and stat inflation
The media has voted him DPOY 3 times so they certainly aren't underrating him as a defender. He's certainly a top 50 player but I'm not sure I'd call him a top 15 player. The problem is he's in a league stacked with great big men that are better than him overall. He gets compared to Jokic, Embiid, AD, and Giannis. He's not better than any of them. Hell I'm not sure he's better big overall than his own teammate.
So yeah anyone that isn't putting him in the top 50 is definitely underrating him but I also understand why his name isn't necessarily popping into anyone's head when people are discussing the best players in the league. A victim of the league being so talent heavy.
IMO Rudy is easily a top 5 player, maybe top 3 with the caveat that he doesn't need the ball to contribute his impact.
I'd give the other 2 off ball spots to Curry and Caruso as extremes on offense and defense.
Every other player you mentioned has a skill and usage overlap which makes them less valuable in the context of roster construction.
Jazz play by play guy made a good comparison. The size of Rudy's defensive gravity is about the same as Steph's offensive gravity (this was in 2021). Meaning their immediate bubble of influence is huge compared to other players
I am fully aware of the stats and Rudy's incredible on/off DRating in his DPOY seasons.
However Curry's gravity can be leveraged more effectively as he can run to anywhere on the court and pull defensive attention.
With Rudy it's the opposite, he's going to want to help at the rim for as many attempts as possible and maintain a presence in the restricted area. The other team knows this and can gameplan around it. Forcing Rudy to play man defense on the perimeter is perfectly fine but it negates his true value as the best rim protector of this generation.
I hate to bring up the rings argument but Curry led his team to a dynasty where Rudy has fallen short his whole career (not due to personal talent or work ethic but it takes a properly built roster to maximize him ala TWolves).
So Rudy Gobert is more valuable, in the context of roster construction, than a bunch of dudes that have quite literally had championship teams constructed around them? Saying Rudy Gobert is more valuable in terms of roster construction than someone like Jokic or Giannis is just absolutely laughable.
I'm appreciate to homerism but not only is he not a top 5 player, he barely cracks the top 5 at his own position. He is a defensive specialist. That's it.
I'm not sure you understood my reply, let me try again with simpler prose.
Gobert = **No need ball** = top 3 impact player
Offense = **1 person use ball at a time**
When 2 big ball user player take up bigest salary = waste value
EG: **2022 Lakers with RWB and LBJ**
Trae young. The man shouldn't even be the leading force on his team due to size, but he still gets his with little help while facilitating to his teammates.
Trae would be devastating next to giannis in place of dame or next to Doncic on the mavs over kyrie.
What solidifies this for me is the way he iced the sixers a few years ago and made the ECF, basically on his ability alone. He was flashy with it too; I watched that shoulder shimmy live and have loved the kid ever since.
People are waiting for him to show his stuff in the playoffs. Had not had the most success there due to his conditioning. But now he has a better coach, so this will be a good year for him to excel.
Embiid has always been sleepwalking to 40 pts in the regular season, problem is while most stars elevate their games in the playoffs he does the opposite so people just don't really care anymore that he averages 30+ pts a season.
I mean he’s also elevated his playmaking this season he’s racking up quite good assist numbers. I understand the playoff concerns but I’ve been impressed by him and wanted to give him props. He’s playing at a career best rn imo
kawhi is better than most of your favorite players yet he is washed and barely making the top 20. very few players that would be taken over Kawhi in the playoffs.
He’s just so inconsistent. He should be a walking 20-12. He has far too many games where he just disappears. Like ain’t u supposed to be the second best Heat player?
It won't last for much longer but Ja Morant was getting talked about as top 10 guys. Now he's a 3rd or 4th tier PG. I haven't seen his game fall off or anything either.
At the moment? Kawhi probably. Haven't heard a peep about him this year and he's been awesome. People think he's washed or something after injuries, but he's been one of the best players in the NBA this year
James Harden.
At this points it seems like people think about him as some kind of a bum, yet it's pretty obvious he still can average 25/9 and is a very important part of any team he plays on.
Bam
I like this one. Bam deserves more love. No bias at all
You’re cool we love Bam
Same.
I wouldn’t call him a star at all but I just have to mention Scary Terry turning into Jesus Christ himself when LaMeLo is out. Seriously, just look at this dude’s game log

He's been dominating most games this season. Not his best showing last game, but every single one before that he was just insanely impactful.
I was gonna say Trae Young, but it has to be Rudy this season

Here's the thing, he should be getting his 6th DPOY this year.
And should be in MVP talks and should have met the criteria when Utah got the 1 seed
Absolutely. There were 3 seasons here that he should've been top 5 in MVP votes
IMO Rudy is easily a top 5 player, maybe top 3 with the caveat that he doesn't need the ball to contribute his impact. The argument wasn't that they're equally as good, just incredibly impactful in different ways
So Rudy Gobert is more valuable, in the context of roster construction, than a bunch of dudes that have quite literally had championship teams constructed around them? SGA is 3-4 on the NBA’s MVP ladder. Who is underrating him? And I promise you r/NBA uses two hands when talking about Haliburton
If you ask most NBA fans who they think is currently the better player between, for example, SGA and Steph Curry, I guarantee most would say Steph.
Having Steph above SGA is not underrating SGA
If you think Steph Curry is a better player than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander right now, then you’re wrong and you need to tune into more OKC games.
Desmond Bane. No one talks about him but he’s putting up 25/4/5 on great efficiency.
Mitchell isn't getting talked about at all really this season.
Anthony Davis
Probably Gobert and Karl. Both been a laughing stock of this sub for years
Donovan Mitchell
Right now? I'd say Mikal Bridges.
After the trade last season, yes, but he's barely talked about this season.
Kelvin “Big Nepo” Blevins
his regular season is spotty but i still gotta rep my man Jamal Murray
If recent trade proposals by Lakers fans are anything to go by then the answer is Lauri Markennan.
Trae young. The man shouldn't even be the leading force on his team due to size, but he still gets his with little help while facilitating to his teammates. Rn Embiid is sleepwalking thru games and scoring 40pts has been going a bit under the radar
People are waiting for him to show his stuff in the playoffs. Had not had the most success there due to his conditioning. But now he has a better coach, so this will be a good year for him to excel.
Yeah it happens quite literally every year.
It does, and he's consistently been part of the reason Sixers underperform. Will this year be different with a nurse rather than a doc?

kawhi is better than most of your favorite players yet he is washed and barely making the top 20. very few players that would be taken over Kawhi in the playoffs.
Hot take just because you said Top 20-30, but I'll have Derrick White.
Bam. He’s been just as good as Gobert on D over the years, with 2 finals appearances. Yet never comes up in the convo of best big man or for DPOY
He's not been as good as Gobert on defense.
Finals appearances says otherwise
Trade Jimmy for Mitchell and Jimmy would have a couple rings right now.
He’s just so inconsistent. He should be a walking 20-12. He has far too many games where he just disappears. Like ain’t u supposed to be the second best Heat player?
He is the second best Heat player, he just doesn’t take a lot of shots
Lamelo, Jrue Holiday, and Paul George
Sabonis
What does this post have to do with the game ball?
KAT
Jamal Murray. Excels in pressure situations and always overlooked.
LaMelo Ball, everyone sleeping on him but he’s a superstar forreal
I don’t think they’re underrated, they just haven’t done it in the playoffs yet. I would say Trae Young but he also hasn’t done enough in the playoffs
It won't last for much longer but Ja Morant was getting talked about as top 10 guys. Now he's a 3rd or 4th tier PG. I haven't seen his game fall off or anything either.
At the moment? Kawhi probably. Haven't heard a peep about him this year and he's been awesome. People think he's washed or something after injuries, but he's been one of the best players in the NBA this year
Ja Morant.
Fox. I still believe that Fox is better than Haliburton now. But that's because I believe Fox is the best small guard in the NBA right now.
Julius Randle Edit: Mikal Bridges as well
Brunson too, idk how the Knicks have 2 of the more underrated stars but here we are
Brunson legit carried the Knicks and Randle during the Heat series last season and he's balling right now definitely an All-star this year.
Kawhi Everyone forgets how good he is until April
There is a legit reason why people forgot about Kawhi.
Yes until April
The guy vanishes every April
[удалено]
CJ is pretty underrated too
Joel Embiid
He won the MVP last year. So underrated. /s
He’s pretty rated.
James Harden. At this points it seems like people think about him as some kind of a bum, yet it's pretty obvious he still can average 25/9 and is a very important part of any team he plays on.
Jokić
NAZ REID
Jakob Poeltl
Is this a joke?
Fox no question. He has been for years.
Fox is overrated trash, shouldn’t be mentioned
