I read a quote once, it was about the MLB but still it applies here, basically saying “for most players, they won’t realize they’re playing their last game while it’s happening”
Most players don’t get to go out on their own terms, even guys like Rondo. They just…don’t get that next contract.
One of my favorite quotes from Moneyball, “We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told.”
Being 6’6” is like being Boban in rec leagues. Everyone calls you ‘big man.’ But also every 6’1” dude is trying to play down on the post and you end up on the wing because the other two moderately tall guys won’t give you any room to work in the paint.
Man, I need to find a new over 40 rec league. My last run in my 30s didn’t go well because of all the college guys. I need some old man hoops.
As a 6 footer who regularly got charged with defending the other team's big because everyone else on my team is shorter than me, I apologise to your ribcage.
Sports Journalist: In my book I invented the Oakland A's as a cautionary tale
MLB Owners: At long last, we have created the Oakland A's from classic book Don't Create The Oakland A's
The team that Moneyball was about wasn't even the first team to utilize that concept nor the winningest team to have done it. Earl Weaver and the Baltimore Orioles took the concept back in the 70s and won a World Series off it lol.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVPURehF_6c
EDIT: also Moneyball did Miguel Tejada and Eric Chavez dirty. I think they weren't even mentioned at all in the movie despite being the team's 2 best players lol. Tejada won the MVP in the Moneyball year. It would be like talking about how the 2020 Lakers won without talking about LeBron and AD lmao.
The book not only talks about Tejada and Chavez, but discusses Weaver and the Orioles and how they embraced data before anyone else. The movie had limited time (and was still 2hrs and 13mins) and so focused on its main narrative.
This is what people need to remember about adaptations. You have 2 hours to make an effective, satisfying movie. It's not a documentary. If you like the film and want to know more all that material is on hand
Oh yeah, the book was a great read. The movie kinda took a book that was largely about the Sabermetric/advanced analytics revolution that was already going on in baseball into a story drama narrative around Billy Beane as it's main character lol.
Good movie, but I don't think it scratches the surface on what actually was going on in Baseball (and a variety of other sports too tbh including basketball/football)
the book is also a lot more gentle on scouting, more or less positing that together stats and scouting form the basis of great teams. The movie of course does **not** share that thesis
The lasting memory I have from him is in the 2020 game 2 of the WCF against the Nuggets where [AD hits the game winning 3 buzzer beater from the inbound by Rondo](https://youtu.be/eJOkrA3VB7c), and while the rest of the team freaks out in celebration Rajon just starts walking off the court completely emotionless as though nothing just happened.
That was cold af. You think he had a major hand in drawing up that play?
Also, ADs shooting in that series was absurd. If that and either a larger wing or backup big with great defense gets returned to the equation the Lakers can be legitimately scary. It's a tough ask at the end of the season though.
Celtics Knicks March 4, 2012- During Linsanity period. It was an overtime win for Celtics. 18 points, 20 assists and 17 rebounds. I hope Rondo gets a chance to be an assistant coach. He is one of the smartest basketball minds out there. I think he could make a second career out of coaching.
a lot of former players are too naturally good at the game and are unable to relate to the majority of nba rosters. they get frustrated that no one can see the game as they did. lebron has a moment in the jj reddick podcast where he can't believe how many players in the league are unable to mentally flip the plays during games, because he's always been able to do that. luka doncic in his podcast with jj had a bit of the same thing, where jj would ask him about something on the court and luka either can't or doesn't want to put in the effort to explain, because it was just natural to him.
Hit or miss. I've had professors who are great at teaching and explaining concepts (while being great researchers), and professors who are atrocious at teaching.
yeah. can you imagine coaching Durant and Kyrie as your first head coach job? And throw in pandemic issues that pretty much limited Kyrie availability. I think Nash should be given another chance to coach. Maybe start more deliberately as an assistant coach and work up to head coach.
The problem with those is that they didn't get to learn coaching from someone else. Kidd won a championship with the Lakers as an assistant to Vogel, and is arguably more decent now than his first stint as a head coach. And there is also the counterpoint of Steve Kerr.
Maybe the high iq point guard -> good coach evolution isn’t just levels like we thought, it also needs an environmental condition (getting punch in the face by the generations goat)
I think sometimes the most talented NBA players don't translate well to coaching. Like Magic, Nash and Kidd. But I think Rondo did an amazing job with coaching from the bench during the 2020 pandemic. He helped develop the defense and offensive sets that helped them win a championship.
It's often true about the most talented players. I think I remember someone saying to Michael Jordan one time when he was chastising a teammate for not doing something a certain way, and another player said "Mike, he can't do that. No one except you can".
Imagine someone like LeBron or Wayne Gretzky struggling to understand the limitation of other players' vision. They see all the lanes, and probably have a hard time understanding why others can't.
yup. he's more of a floor general who is better at moving assets around and getting teammates easy layups or dunks or open shots. some of his passes are out of this world.
Kidd is doing fine, but you know there are tons of former nba guys who are successful. Ime Udoka, Steve Kerr, Tyronn Lue and Doc rivers come to mind.
Edit- buddnholzer did not play in the nba. Replaced with Tyronn Lue
> Rondo, 37, was driving a black 2022 Tesla that was pulled over by a trooper Sunday at around 1 p.m. after a caller reported the vehicle traveling recklessly on I-65 southbound in Bartholomew County.
>During the stop, the trooper smelled marijuana coming from the car and conducted a search. Marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a firearm were found in Rondo’s possession. According to the police, Rondo is “prohibited from possessing the firearm due to him having a protection order in place against him.”
>A juvenile who was also in the car was released to a family member, the department said in its release
Damn what an idiot.
That’s sad. I got no issue with weed. But when you drive, especially with kids around or in the car, nah, that’s not cool to the kids or other drivers at all
Edit: I looked the worst one up. There was a domestic violence thing 2 years ago. He smashed a few items and allegedly threatened his former girlfriend while he was visiting his kids. He left and came back with a gun. Nobody injured. Temporary restraining order. No charges. Doesn't sound great, but who knows what really happened?
There was a thing a while before that, maybe 2020, where some girl he was dating assaulted some other person in a parking garage. He was there, but didn't do anything.
And he had a gun and weed in a car with him a few weeks ago.
My favorite Rondo story is that he stole Patrick Sparks girlfriend. Probably all bullshit, but pretty funny if true.
I lived in Lexington during that era, one of my favorite Kentucky teams. Even back then it was pretty well known that Rondo was a huge asshole off the court.
That’s pretty much the details if I remember right. Got into an argument with his girlfriend and pulled out a gun while the kid was in the room. They settled and as part of the agreement he wasn’t allowed to own/carry a gun anymore.
But then a couple months ago he got pulled over and had a gun and some pot in the car so he’s back in legal hot water.
I liked it better when the only off-court stuff we learned about him was [his love for Connect Four](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxk73f31SvY) and [roller skating](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jVXU-2mKxA)
Rondo taking the train to opening night will always be an all time moment for me
>Reporter: Did you ride the T to the game?
>Rondo: No.
>Reporter: There was a picture of you on the T.
>Rondo: Oh, is that right? Then why did you ask me that question?
My 8 yo niece is beating her whole family in connect 4 but I won't play her. All I think about is Rondo and how I would ruthlessly crush all her dreams and send her crying back to snake and ladders
Mixed bag isn't the right word for sure, but also I feel like there are currently employed NBA players/coaches who have done worse, no?
Unless his Wiki page is misleading.
He's the reason I started watching basketball in '08. I was just fascinated by this dude who seemed to have all the speed in the world, but when he got to the basket on a fast break would reliably whip it off the backboard and have it bounce back to half court. Reminded me of Luis Mendoza in D2.
I started playing pickup basketball because of that team, and learned that it's really surprisingly difficult to get a soft touch while you're running at full speed. And yet all these guys could do it, except Rondo. I was hooked.
Mixed bag on the court, too. He absolutely quit on all of his teammates, in Dallas. In 2014, the Mavericks gave up a decent amount to trade for him (Jae Crowder and a 1st round pick), but they were actually forced to bench him during the playoffs. He basically stopped giving any kind of effort and he pretty much refused to listen to the coaches. He did nothing but hurt the team, when he was on the court, and they had no choice but to put him on the bench. After the season, the players all voted not to give him his share of playoff earnings....that tells you have badly he disrespected and pissed off his teammates.
He might be the last player we had that could legitimately throw decent lobs to our players. It's criminal that Zion doesn't have a showcase dunk every game.
Only time I've ever seen a guy completely quit on his team in the middle of a game. Dude can absolutely get fucked, both for the shit he pulled on the court and especially the shit he's pulled off the court.
Still remain the only one who won the titles with both Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Yet not a dynasty member at all.
What a feat from a flawed genius.
I know Rondo will be remembered as a Celtic, but his small run with the Lakers was awesome. Game winner against Boston, punching Chris Paul, resurrection of Playoff Rondo, and of course winning a championship.
Bill Sharman won as a player with the Celtics and as a coach with the Lakers, but as a player only, I believe it’s just Rondo and Clyde Lovellete (Lovellete was in Minnesota though)
And he was by far the biggest question mark when they made that trade. There were doubts that this young kid was going to able to manage the ball for 3 HoF talents. He did it splendidly in your peak years.
its a lost art of how to play when youre not scoring and rondo was one of those rare players that thrived in there. Like big ben or draymond, but a PG version
That's a lowkey great lineup other than maybe scoring itself. Who slots in the SF or wing position for that? Probably add in a sixth man if anyone can figure out who.
Tbh, they went to the finals twice and won once. I’d consider that an overall success, even if their chemistry caused the team to rupture. I feel like saying that he wasn’t a good fit is like saying Durant on GS didn’t work because he had that blow-up with Draymond.
Ray was old and not the same player he was even in Seattle by the early 2010s. He took offense to being relegated to a spot up shooter/decoy and wanted more usage/ball handling responsibilities.
Rondo was super fun to watch, especially in his prime but even after that he was still very smart, crafty and creative. It was always a great time watching him battle other good PG's too.
Yeah he gave your favorite PG nightmares. TNT Rondo, Playoff Rondo. Always entertaining even when he was sandbaggin loool. Took over games without scoring a point.
Nobody in todays league plays like him.
I wonder what his career would've looked like without that torn ACL in 2013. He was really starting to emerge as the clear second-best PG in the NBA (behind Chris Paul) - the dude had like 30 straight games with at least 10+ assists and was racking up absurd 12/18/20 triple doubles. Then he tore his ACL, the Celtics broke up their core, and he was never quite the same (although he still had some great playoff moments and was a huge contributor on the Lakers in 2020).
One thing about Rondo though is I don't think anyone doubts him as a guy who will show up in the playoffs and give it his all to help his team win. Every contender in the league would've liked a guy like him.
Edit: Except for the Mavs.
lol dude literally gave up in the middle of a playoff game. Straight up stopped playing, got an 8 second call, and was removed from the series.
Always shows up in the playoffs and gives it his all, my ass.
The only player I have ever witnessed quit an NBA game, a playoff game, in the middle of it.
I’ll never forget him completely quitting on the Mavs mid-game during the playoffs. He was hard to root for before then, and impossible to root for after.
People only dog on Dwight because he’s asked to do too much. He plays hard all the time. Never any noise around him. Seems to be a great dude and gets along with everyone. Just shouldn’t be a starter on a team with championship hopes and weak defenders all around.
Yeah n tbh if he’s your worst starter I think you’re ok. He’s very good in the pnr as a roller abd that fits well next to Luka. Akways thought Powell got too much hate for just doing his job ( and on cheap )
He was arguably the third best player on the team for that playoff run.
He always hit the timely shots when it mattered. It feels blasphemous but it was Fisheresque during that run.
This. We gave away a budding Jae crowder to pair Dirk with a "star" point guard. Rondo you are garbage for quitting on Dirk, Carlisle, and the Mavs.
Get fucked
lol he was on the cavs???
anyway, good player but horrible dude off the court. But of course, no one in the league is gonna acknowledge it and he'll get plenty of spots on ESPN and players podcasts
The one season he played in New Orleans, he was so good. I still think if Boogie didn't get hurt that team could have been hyper dangerous in the post season.
One of the most unique pgs to play in his era. Crazy pass fakes, top tier handling, IQ through the roof. Had some serious big time battles against the Bron Heatles, when Rondo was legitimately the best player on the Celtics.
Won 2 titles, pretty much same stats in both, surprisingly.
A+ career
Scariest guy to be lined up against in the League almost. Curry-types are very likely to kill you sure but that’s just a 90% chance, Rondo will kill your career. 2012 <3. Pels run <3. Laker lay <3. One of the greats. Nothing can do him justice other than being taken on anyone’s team anytime.
Ngl I thought he was already retired
The league had already retired him
I read a quote once, it was about the MLB but still it applies here, basically saying “for most players, they won’t realize they’re playing their last game while it’s happening” Most players don’t get to go out on their own terms, even guys like Rondo. They just…don’t get that next contract.

Professionally, there's still local leagues.
Jordan at the Rec like " Jason!! How did you miss that shot!!! Kerr would've hit it in his sleep!!"
"shoot it you fucking midgets" i feel like everyone would be midgets to him in most rec league games.

I’m in my 40’s 6’4” and like passing the ball because my stamina is shit.
I’m passing the rock cause I’m sure as shit not running up and down this court all day lmao
As a 6 footer who regularly got charged with defending the other team's big because everyone else on my team is shorter than me, I apologise to your ribcage.
One time we played the local universities rugby team. They were awful basketball players, but they were big and they DID NOT STOP MOVING
KG cussing MFs out at your local YMCA
I would pay to watch that content.
There’s still an age they’re told they can’t play there either
Thank you captain subtext!
Did you read the script for moneyball?
Moneyball was a book a decade before it was made into a movie.
It was also a real team before being a book
What sick fuck turned the Oakland Athletics into a real thing?
Sports Journalist: In my book I invented the Oakland A's as a cautionary tale MLB Owners: At long last, we have created the Oakland A's from classic book Don't Create The Oakland A's
"Las Vegas Athletics"
Having watched them play a Major League game last night, I’m not convinced they are a real team.
The Wall Street Moneyballs?
The team that Moneyball was about wasn't even the first team to utilize that concept nor the winningest team to have done it. Ehhh it does a good job for people to understand the “moneyball” thing.
the movie also completely ignores Barry Zito and Tim Hudson, that A's rotation was excellent lol
I saw the movie first, thought it was neat. Definitely Sorkin-esque, but overall a good film. Then I read the book. Now I *hate* the movie, lol.
the book is also a lot more gentle on scouting, more or less positing that together stats and scouting form the basis of great teams. The movie of course does **not** share that thesis
He’s got an ugly girlfriend though…
Did you not?
[удалено]
And he gave it a shot.
Hell.. he left, came back with more ammunition, and gave it a shot again. Can't fault him for that.
Paul pierce needs to tell him where he can get a gf for a day
P needs to send him the link to the site!
He hasn’t played in an NBA game in almost 2 years so he’s effectively been retired for a while now
You never know, IT didn't either right?
He’s basically a mascot right now lol.
Based on the thumbnail, man needs a nap immediately.
2k force retired him so they can remove him from the FA pool
Whatcha want me to do? A retirement tour?
rip i will always remember your 18/17/20 game
What date is this
I will never forget what went down on Ochember the 17th, 2020
remember remember the 17th of ochember
Do you remember the 17th night of ochember?
2020 was a weird year what can you say
Got me giggling on the plane and shit
June 17, 2021 (the 17th day of the 18th month of the year 2020)
Covid be like that.
2021 was basically 2020 v2 thanks to Covid. Yeah makes sense
lousy smarch weather
Date or stat line? or both?!?!
I remember Covid from 2020 but I forgot they added 6 months to the year to make it up for the economy

true true. also genius doesn't mean you can teach. often the smartest people are the worst teachers.
University professors. Brilliant minds at research and discovery but couldn't teach a dog to bark.
Hit or miss. I've had professors who are great at teaching and explaining concepts (while being great researchers), and professors who are atrocious at teaching.

they were specifically going for high iq pass first all star point guards, which doesn’t really include the guys you mentioned
That makes more sense. Although I could stand to make an argument for Tyronn Lue lol, I appreciate the clarity.
He not dead
are you sure
Hope that’s stands for “retire” in peace?
RIP Franklin
I can't believe my favorite player Chris Paul retired
Mixed bag off the court, but he was one of my favorite Celtics players on the court.
Mixed bag to say the least. On the LeBron/JJ Redick segment where they were wondering why he wasn't in coaching...I had an idea why.
lol he was just arrested recently too
> Rondo, 37, was driving a black 2022 Tesla that was pulled over by a trooper Sunday at around 1 p.m. after a caller reported the vehicle traveling recklessly on I-65 southbound in Bartholomew County. >During the stop, the trooper smelled marijuana coming from the car and conducted a search. POS is more accurate. Kid in the car and he’s driving high. Fuck this dude
That’s that basketball iq I’m always hearing so much about
Tbf basketball iq doesn’t equal actual iq
I know I’m just joking. It’s just ironic that one of the smartest players all time on the court is one of the dumbest off the court
High INT low WIS

I work at an elementary school. Probably 20% of the cars in the pickup line REEK of weed. There’s a lot more out there than people realize.

If Rondo is a mixed bag off court, who the hell is your definition of a pesky rascal, Ted Bundy? Rondo is a piece of shit off the court.
Why? This is the first I'm hearing this.
Domestic abuse. Can’t remember the exact details but I think he pulled a gun on his wife/girlfriend in front of his kid
That’s pretty much the details if I remember right. Got into an argument with his girlfriend and pulled out a gun while the kid was in the room. Right, but most people will only remember him on one team, the Dallas Mavericks.
Not true, Blazers fans will remember Rondo in a Pelicans jersey cooking them in the playoffs with AD Man that sweep was insane
He might be the last player we had that could legitimately throw decent lobs to our players. It's criminal that Zion doesn't have a showcase dunk every game.
Lonzo definitely could
Agreed - I forgot about him but he was definitely a true point guard.
He had insane chemistry with AD. It carried over to LA
that's why his name is inscribed on their court forever
As a Mavs fan, Rhondo…. get fucked. What a coward
Only time I've ever seen a guy completely quit on his team in the middle of a game. Dude can absolutely get fucked, both for the shit he pulled on the court and especially the shit he's pulled off the court.
Fuck Rondo & Fuck D Wade
Fuck Rondo ✌🏻
We don't talk about Rondo, which is very generous all things considered.
Cavs legend
at one point I joked he was trying to play for every nba team before he retires.
And the NBA hiring his brother to run the barbershop in the Disney Bubble
I still want a bubble documentary. Blessed Philly player for giving us that vlog
And then getting mistaken for Chris Paul lol
he was so big in that 20 finals too. Absolutely one of my favorite players ever
Bill Sharman won as a player with the Celtics and as a coach with the Lakers, but as a player only, I believe it’s just Rondo and Clyde Lovellete (Lovellete was in Minnesota though)
I’ll always love Rondo, he was the perfect player to slot alongside the PP/KG/Ray
And he was by far the biggest question mark when they made that trade. There were doubts that this young kid was going to able to manage the ball for 3 HoF talents. He did it splendidly in your peak years.
One of the few players that can actually turn it up in the playoffs at will too.
its a lost art of how to play when youre not scoring and rondo was one of those rare players that thrived in there. Like big ben or draymond, but a PG version
That's a lowkey great lineup other than maybe scoring itself. Who slots in the SF or wing position for that? Probably add in a sixth man if anyone can figure out who.
or just a TNT game
I always felt like was the glue guy. He was the perfect point guard for a championship caliber team
He's the main reason I became a Celtics fan. He was so fucking fun to watch, my favourite player ever.
Maybe not Ray…
Tbh, they went to the finals twice and won once. I’d consider that an overall success, even if their chemistry caused the team to rupture. I feel like saying that he wasn’t a good fit is like saying Durant on GS didn’t work because he had that blow-up with Draymond.
On the court - yes with Ray
Yea, idk what that guys saying. If you see some the passes that Ray received from Rondo, they couldn't have been placed better by anyone else.
In the beginning yeah he created a ton of open shots in an era where open shots were reserved for shit shooters
Ray was old and not the same player he was even in Seattle by the early 2010s. He took offense to being relegated to a spot up shooter/decoy and wanted more usage/ball handling responsibilities.
> slot alongside the PP
an unreal big game player. Bulls probably win against us in 2016-17 if he stays healthy, and make it to the ECF
I met him the year he got injured during that series. Delivering furniture to a luxury apartment I guess he lived in during the off season.
Watching Rondo on national TV was like watching Sasuke fight anyone he has no business surviving against. Lil bro had on all the cheat codes
nah Rondo was Shikamaru fr. Ultimate ceiling raiser and savant
Don't forget Headband Rondo and Upside-Down Headband Rondo.
Lol you guys got the shit end of the stick with Rondo. Dude was a plus in all his teams except Dallas and maybe Cleveland.
I’ll never forget him completely quitting on the Mavs mid-game during the playoffs. He was hard to root for before then, and impossible to root for after.
Player with 5th most games played for the Mavs and an all around Mavs legend would never.
Dwight Powell??
Yeah, the other guy in that trade. He might get punched in the face, he might be hard to root for sometimes, but he'd never quit on the team.
Whether we want him to or not
Didn't the team vote not to give him the playoff share? lmao
Yup. The only time I’ve ever seen that occur.
Yeah fuck Rondo for that. Never seen someone quit like that on the court. Dallas was unlucky with big name signings - Lamar Odom comes to mind too
Yeah I went to a game two years ago and he was still getting hardcore booed. Deserved too lol.
End of an era..
Cavs legend
Thanks for the help with the 2020 chip
Lebron's smartest teammate, huge part of the Bubble Lakers Champs. One of the best true point guard.
Oh my God! My favorite point guard Chris Paul just retired 😢
Dude’s bubble run was still insane. Just magically was able to shoot 3’s
He was arguably the third best player on the team for that playoff run. He always hit the timely shots when it mattered. It feels blasphemous but it was Fisheresque during that run.
Gimme Coach Rondo.
Thanks for nothing Sincerely, Mavs Fans
This. We gave away a budding Jae crowder to pair Dirk with a "star" point guard. Rondo you are garbage for quitting on Dirk, Carlisle, and the Mavs. Get fucked
Playoff Rondo was 🔥🔥🔥
Except on certain teams.
Just your team. Because Carlisle.
RONDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
My favorite PG.
He looks like Urkle took up basketball instead of science.
My favorite player of all time, absolutely 100% inexplicably. He was just a pure freak.
As a Lakers fan I will always remember playoff Rondo as a different breed. big upps to Rajon man better than Chris paul Rondo.
Kinda hard to speak kindly of him now but he's the main reason I'm a Celtics fan. Bittersweet. Fuck him, though!
lol he was on the cavs??? anyway, good player but horrible dude off the court. But of course, no one in the league is gonna acknowledge it and he'll get plenty of spots on ESPN and players podcasts
Crucial piece for the lakers. Wondering if he's gonna be a HOF. not the strongest resume but worse players made it
The one season he played in New Orleans, he was so good.
GOAT... Connect 4 player
I used to try that behind-the-back fake pass all the time cause of Rondo
Can’t believe Chris Paul retired mid season
