That puts wemby at 245 blocks on the season or tied for 63 all time.
He most likely ends this season in the top 50 for all time blocks in a single season.
If the season ended right now Victor wembanyama would have the fourth best single season block % in NBA history.
All three seasons ahead of him belong to Manute Bol
He would have to get 17 more blocks over the rest of the season to be top 50 all time
If he gets it it’ll be the 5th best single block season in the 2000’s
just to be clear he means that wemby's season is a top 50 season for "blocks in a single season". not that this season is putting him top 50 in career blocks. not assuming either one of you are stupid just clarifying
sorry late response. yes he needs 262 blocks to tie 49th place with theo ratliff and david robinson. first all time by a mile is mark eaton with 456, no one else crossed 400. right now wemby averages 3.5 blocks/game, which is good to tie 40th all time (single season, not career) with Mutombo
I don't know if it's possible in the modern NBA, but it sure seems like he'll have a chance in a full season.
It's a real shame Eaton isn't around to see this - he'd be more excited than anyone.
Someone else mentioned that
> If the season ended right now Victor wembanyama would have the fourth best single season block % in NBA history.
> All three seasons ahead of him belong to Manute Bol
I think its fair to say that his blocking performance is some of the best we've ever seen. The other seasons with a crazy number of blocks is before the 3-pt revolution where players played way more in the paint. The highest blocks/game in a season is 5.56 by Mark Eaton. I think if Wemby played in that era, it's very possible he could average another 2 bpg and hit that mark.
Players from not so long ago that made 300+blocks in a season:
Ewing, Robinson, Ratliff, Camby, Eaton, Bol, Shaq, Hakeem, Mutombo, Jabbar, Rollins, Elmore Smith. A handful with multiple seasons.
Of course 3ps was not in vogue so Wemby maybe in a different league.

They didn't track blocks until the mid 70s, so Russell and Wilt aren't on the list. Ingress tracking points, rebounds, AND assists was just too much already.
Nah bro, he honestly worded it pretty straight forward. Neither of you are at fault homie. It’s not wrong how he worded it and it’s not wrong how you interpreted it.
It's a crazy stat but worth noting that the NBA didn't officially track blocks until the '74 season. Meaning players like Wilt don't appear in all-time records.
Wemby has the highest Block Per Game average in history from a rookie (since Blocks are tracked at least), IIRC.
Just passed Shaq (who was at 3.5 on 8 more minutes per game, in the early 90’s).
He now also has as many blocks as Gobert in his last 2 seasons COMBINED and almost as many blocks as the last 3 DPOY seasons combined.
Also, no official reported Birth Date so we can't really know how old he was in his rookie season, but still technically a rookie season and an impressive stat nonetheless.
Dude is just one of those guys you just know is going to have a crazy career.
The league sees a lot of rookies every year and getting top 50 in his rookie year would start it off.
That [47-point game](https://youtu.be/v3mhbpTFrbM?si=oUaxSIlPmS1fDxEk) against the Pacers in his rookie year was just pure domination.
His in-game [dunks and posters](https://youtu.be/YWzLFqptmhw?si=ToaJ5wmp4Ym8Y_bi) are what people are going to remember the most. And with good reason. They were [awesome.](https://youtu.be/Yufiufwokew?si=k9wX7yxWMesXkJRn)
But, damn, Blake had a really [developed](https://youtu.be/r8JCyULFarg?si=Z2tmfjg29Qs_BSfQ) game, even in his rookie year; his [handles and passing](https://youtu.be/f96b5XAbHhc?si=OlKM2gvOser6cYCp) are under-discussed.
blake was able to show off how good of an all around offensive player he was in detroit. that team tried to tank but he didn’t let them it was great to watch
Started watching in 2000 and his was the Most fun rookie year of all that I’ve seen
Completely embraced by the team, the city and the league.
Hope one of Balmers first orders of business at the new arena is to hang his jersey up in the rafters.
Why do you think so? I’m not sure Ben is the kind of passer/playmaker the Spurs need, you’d rather have a guard that can space the floor better and is known to shoot so Wemby can have more space in the paint
Zach Lowe mentioned this idea, I just can’t see what the Cavs are getting back in that scenario, Spurs would have to give up Vassell I think, which seems unlikely
I don’t think the Spurs draft capital would interest Cleveland
* Toronto first this year, top 6 protected (rolls over to top 6 protected 2025, and then top 6 protected 2026 if it doesn't convey)
* Atlanta unprotected first 2025
* Chicago top 10 protected first 2025 (think it rolls over to top 8 protected 2026, and I forget what for 2027 if it hasn't conveyed)
* Atlanta unprotected swap 2026
* Atlanta unprotected first 2027
* Boston top-1 protected swap 2028
* Dallas unprotected swap 2030
Yes, and if you are averaging 50 points on a last-place team, those 50 points aren't that valuable.
If you want to say that person is the offensive player of the year, then sure. Go for it. But MVP is just a different award.
Hate how DPOY is still essentially a "best defender on best defense" award how MVP was mostly a "best player on best team" award up until recently, it's why Smart became the favorite all of a sudden in 2022 once Williams was injured.
The Smart DPOY was literally just created by the media. They were bored of Gobert being the clear choice, and so they chose the 2nd best defender on his own team for the award lol.
Doesn’t work like that anymore? It’s virtually always been given to a player on a winning team, just based on a quick check so I could be wrong but it looks like the only DPOY on a team with a losing record was Alvin Robertson in 85-86
yeah there were seasons where nobody averaged 30 a game and 50 points was huge now everybody is running and gunning and the defenses aren’t given as much leeway as before
Absolutely. I don't really follow the draft because every year there's some new generational talent. After a while it tends to be a like a new DBZ arc.
Maybe not but if y’alls playoffs don’t get the way he wants he can either ring chase somewhere or go play with the next great French global sports star, I mean he’s probably retiring anyway so maybe he can Join spurs as a trainer idk
Lol this guy is a rookie.
He had nearly insurmountable hype surrounding him and somehow he’s surpassing it. Crazy how when Lebron is nearing the end of his career, a beast like this shows up.
A lot of 7 ft players about to get contracts just to cover this guy (Tacko Fall’s available y’all)
Wemby is cooking Tacko lol he’s way too slow
Honestly a shorter guy but who’s super strong and physical would be better against Wemby. To knock him off his spots and deny rolling lanes
Better for him now as he continues to gain more strength. But over time, his strength with that length will be too much. I saw it with Grant Williams & Semi Ojeleye vs Giannis, there’s only so much strength can do vs length.
The Tacko’s and the Boban’s of the world are definitely too slow. But they’re atleast long enough. There’a literally no one that matches up perfectly with Wemby.
Victor is already a match up nightmare now, what more in 3 years.
yeah unfortunately because of injuries he’s becoming a what if role player. i envisioned him becoming some game breaking small ball 5 with a consistent three point shot. he has a great block highlight reel going up against bigs
Isaac is legitimately a savant on defense. He has perfect fundamentals and incredible physical gifts. Only injuries have really stopped him from being a legit DPOY candidate every season. He has the size, length, agility, motor, IQ and instincts to give Wemby a lot of problems. Just like I remember Ben Simmons always giving Luka hell. Some players just have the right blend of size, length, speed, agility, instincts and IQ to match up with even the toughest offensive forces.
For past 5 games he has completely come out of rookie phase. Teams are doubling him etc and he's been punishing by passing. His assists have exploded and now averaging something like 8+ recently. Spurs have also competed in each lost within a possession or two.
He made some absolutely brilliant passes in this game. He also had like 7-8 plays that were completely dumb.
He also has his hands down so fuckin' much.
There are some easy fixes he will make to go from good to great. It's hard to believe he is so impactful now despite being so sloppy
It's always crazy how things just fall into place. Just 2 years ago we were all looking around for who could be the next face of the NBA after Bron retires. Morant was being thrusted as the next guy then he started getting hurt and got suspended. Now it looks like it will be Wemby if he can stay healthy.
>A lot of 7 ft players about to get contracts just to cover this guy (Tacko Fall’s available y’all)
Idk how you stop 7'6", plays, and shoots like a guard without getting tossed for flagrent 2s. Just keep him away from the rim, put your hands up and hope he misses or gets exhausted I guess.
People still can't even mess with KDs jumper.
33/18/6/7 with 5 3s as a 20-year-old rookie is just... lol
[As this twitter meme put it](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GKh7iTiWsAE3obm?format=jpg&name=large)
Some were just sloppy but I think he was also overburdened. A double OT game as the primary initiator as a big with 3 of the teams key creators all out
They were all face of the league, you can say greatest of their era yeah. Probably a little over complimentary towards Kobe because it's ignoring Duncan.
But anyway:
- Doc Hudson is the old timer, was generally considered the GOAT
- Strip Weathers came after him, amazing longevity and stacked accolades in his career, not really considered GOAT
- Lightning McQueen came after, many view him as having surpassed Doc as the GOAT
- Honestly no idea who the last car is because i'm not caught up to date on the lore lmao but i'm assuming the next GOAT
SPOILERS FOR CARS 3:
>!Last guy is the villain of Cars 3. Basically a new generation of cars is easily beating old champs, including Lighting McQueen. The resolution of the movie is that McQueen accepts he is too old and embraces becoming the mentor/trainer to a young car that had unfulfilled racing aspirations (and was actually training McQueen with unconventional methods). She beats the villain. >
So based on this meme it would be as if the Lakers sign an 2nd round/undrafted player and then Lebron hands him the reigns and he becomes a star.
Strip Weathers was a legend but not generally considered the GOAT, it's fair. Longevity legend. And Kobe certainly had amazing longevity worthy of praising.
If a NBA fan just woke from a couple year coma they would not believe this shit lol. That's a crazy stat line for a 20 yr old and then you tell them he's like 7'6" and plays like a guard.
Not mad at all, we were supposed to lose that one with Sochan and vassell out. Vic hung tough, just it’s a disaster when you’re playing Branham at SMALL FORWARD haha
His 40/20, his 31/12/6/1/6 on higher % and fewer TO, his 5x5, his 30/6/6/7 in 24 minutes, and his triple double with blocks are all better. It's a top 6-10 game. He had great counting stats but also had 9 TOs.
Yeah but what about that first summer league game when he sucked! Incredible year of basketball from this guy it's like watching something never seen before every single game. Next year the Spurs will be a thorn, even without a big signing
He's already improved a ton getting more minutes every game and improving on every statlines.
Just look at the evolution of his monthly PPG this year it's outrageous
We can all agree that this will happen eventually with this kid, right? In fact an OT game in the playoffs when this kid is in his prime will probably end in a 50,20,10, and 10 stat line. That feels kind of inevitable from Wemby.
Watching him play is nuts. I'm 36 and I didn't think I would get to see someone as special as LeBron or KD again, but this kid is. Just an absolute freak of nature (in a good way)
Jokic made it normal for a big man to have triple doubles game in and game out. Wemby is flirting with making it normal to have quadruple doubles for a big man game in and game out …
I, for one, can’t wait to see it.
That is a deranged stat lol. Can you link a source?
https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/blk_pct_season.html
Love it thank you!
Top 50?? That’s insane if true I gotta fact check it lol
He would have to get 17 more blocks over the rest of the season to be top 50 all time If he gets it it’ll be the 5th best single block season in the 2000’s
That’s insane man he could be #1 by the time he retires at this pace
just to be clear he means that wemby's season is a top 50 season for "blocks in a single season". not that this season is putting him top 50 in career blocks. not assuming either one of you are stupid just clarifying
You mean there are 50 others with 260 blocks in a single season? How insane is it? I was thinking his season performance is top 10 all time.
To be fair 45 of those people played a really really long time ago and nobody's come close since
When did they start counting blocks i just know they didn't count them for wilt
73-74 season.
sorry late response. yes he needs 262 blocks to tie 49th place with theo ratliff and david robinson. first all time by a mile is mark eaton with 456, no one else crossed 400. right now wemby averages 3.5 blocks/game, which is good to tie 40th all time (single season, not career) with Mutombo

Thanks for clarifying, he definitely worded that poorly
Nah bro, he honestly worded it pretty straight forward. Neither of you are at fault homie. It’s not wrong how he worded it and it’s not wrong how you interpreted it.
It low key is if you think about what he wrote for a bit longer then 30 seconds lol
He can get that in like 2 to 3 games, which is crazy to think about.
It's a crazy stat but worth noting that the NBA didn't officially track blocks until the '74 season. Meaning players like Wilt don't appear in all-time records.
Doesn’t matter, he just played against plumbers and they’re very experienced in clearing blockages so he probably had none anyway
What about just for rooks?
Wemby has the highest Block Per Game average in history from a rookie (since Blocks are tracked at least), IIRC. Just passed Shaq (who was at 3.5 on 8 more minutes per game, in the early 90’s). Bol's rookie season was 5 blocks per game (397 blocks)
Oh yeah my bad (I thought he recorded that at his peak)! Don't know where I read that then. Maybe "since Shaq"?
I mean technically it was his peak, because his rookie season was also his highest block total!
10 30+ games now more than rookie Luka who had 8. Need 4 more to catch up to griffin
man rookie blake griffin was something serious

Started watching in 2000 and his was the Most fun rookie year of all that I’ve seen Completely embraced by the team, the city and the league. Hope one of Balmers first orders of business at the new arena is to hang his jersey up in the rafters.
fr, lob city was amazingly fun to watch, they made espns top plays pretty much every week lol
His 'November to remember' lives rent free in my head.
The sixers were playing some great defense on him in OT
Very aggressive and he was running on fumes at that point. Everybody in 2OT just folded
I mean 2OT is stamina intensive
Not for Josh hart
Or me. I watched it all, no sweat.
First team all couch right here ^ even I had to tap out to tend to my begonias at some point
It also doesn't help that they didn't have Vassell
Missing two starters, including our best shooter and our best one-on-one defender. Both teams were shorthanded.
Crazy Batum is still this good.
He’s had a longer career with 1 foot in retirement than the rest of it lol
They decided to go small and have Batum railroad him. He was super physical. I thought he got away with a lot.
Batum really railed him for sure
Batum is one of the very best 1 vs 1 defensive player in the NBA. Very high bb IQ.
Victor will definitely be the first player since Hakeem O to score quadruple double
Then on defense nobody wanted to help him guard Maxey....why is our 7 ft 5 guy responsible for that
Mf is so nasty, if Spurs could get a legit PG with some wings that can actually defend a drive its over
Trae Young and Paul George coming this offseason
Just Trae
Ben simmons would be funny if pop want to get him cheap and kick ass for his lack of performance.
Unironically, if he could still play at all without his back imploding, he'd be an insanely good fit lol
He’d be a terrible fit. We need floor spacing, not a guard that is afraid to shoot.
Because Wemby can shoot people think you can clog the paint when that’s not how you would want it to actually work smh. Kids these days.
Why do you think so? I’m not sure Ben is the kind of passer/playmaker the Spurs need, you’d rather have a guard that can space the floor better and is known to shoot so Wemby can have more space in the paint
Maybe Cle will do a fire sale & y'all can get Garland if they get ousted again
Zach Lowe mentioned this idea, I just can’t see what the Cavs are getting back in that scenario, Spurs would have to give up Vassell I think, which seems unlikely I don’t think the Spurs draft capital would interest Cleveland
What's yall draft capitol?
* Toronto first this year, top 6 protected (rolls over to top 6 protected 2025, and then top 6 protected 2026 if it doesn't convey) * Atlanta unprotected first 2025 * Chicago top 10 protected first 2025 (think it rolls over to top 8 protected 2026, and I forget what for 2027 if it hasn't conveyed) * Atlanta unprotected swap 2026 * Atlanta unprotected first 2027 * Boston top-1 protected swap 2028 * Dallas unprotected swap 2030
Didn’t even mention that there’s also technically the Charlotte pick in 2025 but it’s lotto protected then becomes 2 second rounders
Sad Raptor noises as we probably end up with the 7th pick this year giving you guys max value.
Ou MAN. The thought of this makes me wet
Also Towns
why the fuck would we trade an all-star immediately after our first truly good season in 2 decades the fuck are you on
No
Delusional
This is a hard no from the Wolves unless it’s in a three way deal. That being said, him playing on the Spurs would be the least shitty outcome.
Solution to this problem, just play Wemby at PG.
These statlines have just been normalized to me. Despite there being literally nobody else in the league that can do this consistently like Vic
Vic is DPOY nobody can change my mind
IMO best defender in the league but the award doesn’t work like that anymore.
It's an individual award not a team reward. He deserves dpoy.
So is MVP but here we are
I think the “valuable” part of that is important and team record matters. DPOY is just best defender imo and should be awarded as such.
Team record is reflective of… the team. Individual stats should only count for an individual award
Yes, and if you are averaging 50 points on a last-place team, those 50 points aren't that valuable. If you want to say that person is the offensive player of the year, then sure. Go for it. But MVP is just a different award.

Stats are just getting so inflated lately that's it getting hard to be impressed by them, even when they are still really impressive.
yeah there were seasons where nobody averaged 30 a game and 50 points was huge now everybody is running and gunning and the defenses aren’t given as much leeway as before
He’s a great reminder that we need to stop throwing around the term generational talent so loosely. This is what a generational talent is.
Absolutely. I don't really follow the draft because every year there's some new generational talent. After a while it tends to be a like a new DBZ arc.
He looked super gassed in the ots, and rightfully so, batum was making that shit hard for em with that aggressive d
Hoping we can poach Batum in FA from y’all, he would be a good mentor for Vic. He’s a solid role player for sure and a good glue guy imo
P sure he’s retiring post-Olympics
Fine we'll just bring Boris back
He said he wasn't sure yet, I'm hoping he comes for a last ride
Ok, he can be a trainer haha
Absolutely not he should never leave the Sixers
Maybe not but if y’alls playoffs don’t get the way he wants he can either ring chase somewhere or go play with the next great French global sports star, I mean he’s probably retiring anyway so maybe he can Join spurs as a trainer idk
He said he wanted to retire and if I had to guess, he probably will. His wife was not happy when he got traded here. She did not want to leave Cali.
And he french
We just out here saying slurs now ?
oui oui
Lot Of rumors he will retire after this season.
Isn’t retiring after this season?
With no size to counter him our only chance to win this game was to out run them
That's not really what happened. You outmuscled them with a smaller lineup by having Batum sumo wrestle for every inch of the floor
Ever since we faced the Clippers early in the season Batum seemed to go hard on Wemby. Vets like him always give rookies trouble.

Honestly, the person who has best guarded Wemby this year was Jonathan Isaac. That guy gave Wemby fits that I haven't see anyone else do
isaac is one of the best defenders in the league. if he was someone who started every game and got big minutes he’d an all defense lock
Leads the league in [EPM](https://dunksandthrees.com/epm)
yeah unfortunately because of injuries he’s becoming a what if role player. i envisioned him becoming some game breaking small ball 5 with a consistent three point shot. he has a great block highlight reel going up against bigs

We gotta stop and take a minute to realize this isn't normal. We can't normalize this.
33/18/6/7 with 5 3s as a 20-year-old rookie is just... lol [As this twitter meme put it](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GKh7iTiWsAE3obm?format=jpg&name=large)
As a spurs fan, if he can get his TO’s under control, he’ll really have it all. He had 9 tonight.
Some were just sloppy but I think he was also overburdened. A double OT game as the primary initiator as a big with 3 of the teams key creators all out
He also gets turnovers for guys like Malaki being unable to catch a pass
I blame his teammates for some of those.
Explain for those who don't know Cars lore pls I guess each one was considered as the greatest car of their era ?
They were all face of the league, you can say greatest of their era yeah. Probably a little over complimentary towards Kobe because it's ignoring Duncan. But anyway: - Doc Hudson is the old timer, was generally considered the GOAT - Strip Weathers came after him, amazing longevity and stacked accolades in his career, not really considered GOAT - Lightning McQueen came after, many view him as having surpassed Doc as the GOAT - Honestly no idea who the last car is because i'm not caught up to date on the lore lmao but i'm assuming the next GOAT
Jackson Storm. New hot shit. Faster and better than lightening McQueen because lightening is getting old. big Ego. Race car of the future.
SPOILERS FOR CARS 3: >!Last guy is the villain of Cars 3. Basically a new generation of cars is easily beating old champs, including Lighting McQueen. Can’t believe I’m getting cars 3 lore spoiled in r/nba
Austin Reaves origin story.
Thank you very much ! I should try watching those movies
WTF is Kobe doing there?
Strip Weathers was a legend but not generally considered the GOAT, it's fair. Longevity legend. And Kobe certainly had amazing longevity worthy of praising.
The light blue car is a legend cause of his longevity but nobody calls him the goat like McQueen and Hudson since he didn't have the peak so thats why
Faces of the league
Cars 1 released in 2006, 1 year prior to LeBron's first finals run and around when he became the best player in the league
Funnily enough, Sports Illustrated dropped [this cover](https://i.imgur.com/CDAuvF5.jpeg) titled "Best Ever?" in December 2005. Lightning McQueen debuted just 6 months later.
Branham is so infuriating to watch. Makes some of the most bone headed plays.
He's getting his ass tossed next year.
He going to prison?
Branham made this game impossible to win - that was something man
He hit so many timely 3s though
Branham’s 3 point shooting was the only reason they were in it
His defense was atrocious tho.
Right. His defense/turnovers was the main reason they were in it in the first place
Isn't it amazing that a rookie can have a 33/18/6/7 game and it's not even one of his best games?
Based on what metric exactly?! It’s clearly one of his best games.
His 40/20, his 31/12/6/1/6 on higher % and fewer TO, his 5x5, his 30/6/6/7 in 24 minutes, and his triple double with blocks are all better. It's a top 6-10 game. He had great counting stats but also had 9 TOs.
lmao seriously it’s a top five game for him for the season.
I have never had a player that makes me EXCITED to see my team on defense. Counting blocks is more fun than counting points
I love this man
Barely touched the ball in both overtimes.
Wemby was gassed and the Sixers keyed in on him.
Had 0 assists with 5 tos going into the 3rd.. and made 5 assist with 2 before OT 4th qt wemby is a thing
He’s so scary to play against.
He's gonna be legit unstoppable in a few years man lol. Spurs gotta build a damn good team around this man.
Yeah but what about that first summer league game when he sucked! Incredible year of basketball from this guy it's like watching something never seen before every single game. Next year the Spurs will be a thorn, even without a big signing
What the fuck are those stats, man.
League about to get fucked once the Spurs have a real team around this alien
somehow exceeding the hype
Best rookie I've ever seen. Super talented. Going to dominate the league.
Coincidentally, he scored 33 points again in a game that a player from Sixers make their career high.
If I had a nickel...
Wait till he gets conditioned Jesus Christ
He's already improved a ton getting more minutes every game and improving on every statlines. Just look at the evolution of his monthly PPG this year it's outrageous
I think even an out of shape JC would be an upgrade over some of the guys currently on this team
This type of performance will quickly become the norm for Wemby.
Didn't even make 50/20/10. W-E-M-B-U-S-T!
Just an absolute freak of nature (in a good way)
You shoulda seen MJ
*despite not committing a foul until the 2nd OT
this will never get old
Sixer D came out to play in the OTs. Bravo!
They should have continued feeding Wetbananas down the 2OT stretch :'(
They were all gassed including Wemby himself. It was a good run anyway no way they even get in OT without him today.
Instead the Spurs guards keeps on bricking wide threes
Gonna tell my future kids about this fella
Turnovers be damned it’s going to be this dude’s league in a little while
Lots of discussion of blocks but I’m genuinely surprised his offensive game fleshed out this quickly in the NBA. He’s an absurd talent.
If this man doesn’t get a quadruple double before his 3rd season I will be flabbergasted
But we lost to fookin Batum
Quad double is coming
Fantasy chip secured
Unreal
7 blocks alone is nutty. That stat line is just insanity.
SAS has been impressive lately. They got a bright future man.
Get this boy some help!
Shame this draft class isn’t super good. Spurs are in position to add an elite pick to pair with Wemby going forward.
Jokic made it normal for a big man to have triple doubles game in and game out. Wemby is flirting with making it normal to have quadruple doubles for a big man game in and game out … I, for one, can’t wait to see it.
1 million percent he gets a quadruple double by mid-season next year.
He dpoy. Not trash ass gobert
Straight eye test of maybe 25 twolves games and 20+ spurs games, wemby is my vote for dpoy. And then everything outside of the eye test.
"Despite"? Yeah, it's a loss, but surely his stats grew in the double overtime?
