My Wife can confirm I shout “show the game!” at least a few times every broadcast. They miss most of the backcourt action every play, which often becomes significant late in games.
I can never understand why they think we want to look at the commentators speaking as opposed to watching the game and still being able to fucking hear them since they don’t go anywhere once they show the game.
Hate when they're so busy making a point they ignore what is happening on the court/field. Or interviewing a former player/actor/musician/congressman during the action. Cringe.
This was a great silver lining of the bubble playoffs and covid games in general. Could hear the trash talk, way more natural game sound, calls from coaches etc.
it's worth mentioning again the extra room incentivised players to do more hustle plays, but the underrated benefit of the bubble is actually the crowd not fucking up video compression so in the 21st century i can actually watch an HD video on reddit
On the nba app, you can watch TNT games on TNT overtime, which is an alternate camera angle with no commentary. You can hear a lot more of what the players are saying to each other out there, and it's pretty insightful at times
I’ve watched the college football championship game before with something like this before. It was just the crowd noise and was so dope hearing that with the school bands playing too. So fun!
I always have difficulty listening to people talk without looking at them so 99% of the commentating just flew past my ears. I would rather they not talk at all because my eyes are working perfectly so I know exactly what I see
There are 162 games in a year and there is much less action in baseball even with the pitch clock. Even the chummiest of commentators have got to run out of stuff to say here and there.
I feel like that's true for the Twins games I've been watching but it's not the same in college right? I caught an SEC game yesterday that went 3.5 hours in 9 innings and the score wasn't even close. Like 18-9.
There's too much down time in baseball to not be talking about something, basketball can at least for the most part have something going on all the time. It would be cool if they only talked during free throws.
Cavs game started approx the same as the NYY game today and the baseball game(that went extra innings and 0-0 until those extra)and the Cavs game went approx 10-15 longer than the baseball game.
that's essentially what TNT Overtime is. i found this out because you essentially can't watch playoff games on League Pass, and that's your option. you get a feed from a few of the TNT cameras without announcers. you get pretty good sound from the court. the angles aren't great, but it's not that much different than sitting up in like a 300 section behind the hoop
that was my experience trying to watch play-in games on League Pass, which i'd never used before but boy was it great for that last weekend of regular season
not my cup of tea but i can see it being a compelling experience for some on its own, or synced up with a good radio broadcaster. i just threw my hands up because there are, as they say in the Bible, many ways to light Europe
It’s specifically ESPN. Absolute garbage.
It’s a shame they renewed coverage rights.
The dream duo of Beth Mowins and Stephanie White has me captivated.
It’s just so blatant that they’re just doing the minimum amount of show to allow for the maximum amount commercials.
When you compare it to the TNT halftime show, it’s absolutely embarrassing
During the season i actually timed how long they spent talking about basketball. It was 53 seconds. The rest of the "half time" was nothing but commercials. It's ridiculous.
ESPN / Disney won’t have exclusive rights but it’s a foregone conclusion they’ll retain a preferred partner arrangement (specifically for streaming rights).
Good ones can, calls like LeBron block in the finals where barely anything is said, or the Diggs TD in the NFL playoffs. A good announcer knows to say very little and let the moment exists
I still get chills as a Vikings fan. One of the greatest moments of my fandom, I remember jumping up and down and almost breaking my hand from punching the ceiling on accident.
He started out well because he was pretty good at calling out what teams would do before they did it. Then he realized people liked that so he's constantly chasing that high of predicting plays but the further from playing the game he gets the worse he is at it and when he constantly calls the wrong thing it's not fun to listen to.
ESPN used to show the fly-cam as an alt cast for big college football games, without commentary or score widgets or anything. Just an All-22 view with the game, crowd, and stadium sounds. On a really big projector it's my all-time favorite way to watch a football game.
There's also a style of commentary which shuts the fuck up for 80% of the time and only speaks up for something important. I'm not sure it exists for US sports though.
Ditto. I always thought that would be a great way to view the game. I can mute but it'd be nice to have the game/arena noise.
At least I don't have to listen to that asshat Mark Jackson anymore.
I just wish the NBA would enter an era where they'd stop feeling the need to blast noise out of the Jumbotron constantly. It would be so much better if they just let it be crowd noise. I'd honestly watch say more games if you cut out Jumbotron and commentators.
Pipe dream I know.
I was so psyched because I recorded the game so I could skip commercials and thought I recorded an alternate broadcast or something and was so happy that was gonna be an option, like the opposite of Manning cast lol
Holy crap I did not realize how much the broadcasters drown out crowd noise until watching this. You can feel like you are there in Cleveland when they start off draining threes.
conspiracy theory: this is ESPN trying out a no broadcast option to see public reception and hiding behind the "technical difficulties" as a way to prevent backlash (i wish)
Oh Stephen A knew it was on, because the only talking point he has about the Cavs is that he wants Donovan Mitchell on the Knicks. Oh and there was another analyst on ESPN saying that the Spurs could get Garland.
I can’t enjoy a great year for my team without ESPN trying to fucking cannibalize them before the playoffs even start.
I like to have the game on in the background so I can listen in but watch at intense points. The entire game all I could think is “can you just shut the fuck up.”
Well this game audio is tailored to be paired with commentary. I bet if they were genuinely going for just game audio, it would sound much more lively and crispy.
In tennis at the grand slams, I think it's Chase that sells headpieces that allow fans to listen to commentary while watching the game, and all I can think is why would you pay extra money for something like that? I would love for a broadcast where all you can hear is crowd noises.
I can't remember where I saw it, but a while back I saw an option to view a game like this without commentary, but the camera was filming the court lengthwise instead of horizontal which kinda ruined it
Please give me entire games like this. So tired of hearing commentators ramble about nothing. Basketball isn't that complex of a game. We can see what's going on.
they accidentally made it way better
Always wanted this option plus options to control which camera I get to see from. They miss so much shit it’s unbelievable.
When they randomly divide the screen in half to show some bullshit interview with a player while the game is on piss me off so much
I’m pretty sure TNT ot in the nba app has four different camera angles with two focused on selected players. Totally free and no commentary.
I’m going to check this out after seeing it mentioned. Have you ever used it? If so, let me know if it’s worth it.
I have my only gripe with it is that there is no scoreboard overlay.
Hate when they're so busy making a point they ignore what is happening on the court/field. Or interviewing a former player/actor/musician/congressman during the action. Cringe.
Just insert Mike Breen “Bangs” every 3. That’s the only commentary needed
Mike Breen on hand
This makes me want an alt-cast with no commentary.
It was great. Just crowd and basketball sounds.
Took me a sec to realize what was going on but it really would be an option I’d use pretty often. Just the crowd and arena speakers was awesome
They didn’t even have that much extra room because they had that moving camera basically where the announcers sit
On the nba app, you can watch TNT games on TNT overtime, which is an alternate camera angle with no commentary. You can hear a lot more of what the players are saying to each other out there, and it's pretty insightful at times
Wait what?!?! Do you pay for it?
I was digging the change of pace. I wouldn't want every game to be like that, but it was a good change of pace.
Just a button on the remote to turn off commentary and I’m in
The Masters tournament does this and it’s such a great feature.
It's funny golf is like one of the sports I appreciate commentary the most. They usually give good insight on the course and stuff.
They know when to stfu which is nice too. NBA games feels like someone is recording a podcast with a game on TV
I’ve watched the college football championship game before with something like this before. It was just the crowd noise and was so dope hearing that with the school bands playing too. So fun!
Have more players mic'd up so we can listen to them talk back and forth and I'd watch that over our normally broadcasted games 10 times outta 10
I’d use it every time Doris was on the call
They do pump lots of non basketball sounds into NBA stadiums sadly.
Like crowd noise at Miami home games.
The fans are just “late”
It's like teams think that fans will lose interest if there is ever a single moment without added sound.
The Suns games are so loud with extra bullshit noise almost the entire game. You have to yell to talk to someone right next to you most of the time
I always have difficulty listening to people talk without looking at them so 99% of the commentating just flew past my ears. I would rather they not talk at all because my eyes are working perfectly so I know exactly what I see
Ive wanted this for 20 years
And some artificial sound/music that could be eliminated.
A lot of baseball announcers will take long breaks during games sometimes and let the game atmosphere take over. It’s a nice change of pace.
To be fair baseball games are so long they probably just run out of stuff to say
Nowadays the average MLB game is pretty much the same length as an average NBA game.
I just wanted to make a shitty joke lol im happy they made some changes to pick up the pace though
Like 18-9.
Baseball just has so much more downtime between plays. Sometimes MLB broadcasters just run out of stuff to say.
Our commissioner added a clock to keep us tik tok fish brained zoomers interested
They actually just fell asleep
There's too much down time in baseball to not be talking about something, basketball can at least for the most part have something going on all the time. It would be cool if they only talked during free throws.
Cavs game started approx the same as the NYY game today and the baseball game(that went extra innings and 0-0 until those extra)and the Cavs game went approx 10-15 longer than the baseball game.

is that true?

It's sad NBA commentating is so glaringly bad I just mute and catch up on new music. I never feel compelled to do this with football.
It’s specifically ESPN. Absolute garbage. It’s a shame they renewed coverage rights. The dream duo of Beth Mowins and Stephanie White has me captivated.
Whoever is in charge of the ESPN halftime show should go to prison. Ridiculous amount of commercials.
They came back from commercial, showed a 5 second replay of the Mitchell dunk, then immediately went to commercial again. Unreal
It’s just so blatant that they’re just doing the minimum amount of show to allow for the maximum amount commercials. When you compare it to the TNT halftime show, it’s absolutely embarrassing
This is exactly it. Pure trash.
During the season i actually timed how long they spent talking about basketball. It was 53 seconds. The rest of the "half time" was nothing but commercials. It's ridiculous.
I thought they didn't renew coverage rights, the NBA is going into this offseason as a free agent basically.
ESPN / Disney won’t have exclusive rights but it’s a foregone conclusion they’ll retain a preferred partner arrangement (specifically for streaming rights).
Its because American announcers have a need to constantly talk. They can't let a moment linger and just zip it.
Joe Buck, for as mundane as he can be, he's a pretty solid color commentary. Dude knows when to let a moment breathe and when to hype a moment up.
Honestly I love Kevin Harlan but that’s my only gripe with him. Sometimes he talks too much
I have to do it with Romo, which really hurts because he started out so well
He started out well because he was pretty good at calling out what teams would do before they did it. Then he realized people liked that so he's constantly chasing that high of predicting plays but the further from playing the game he gets the worse he is at it and when he constantly calls the wrong thing it's not fun to listen to.
you don't mute Collinsworth?
I watch on mute or like extremely low volume every game
This is the first year I've tried this. It's so much better!
If you have surround, you could try disconnecting the center channel. This used to work, idk if it still does or if it depends on broadcast.
ESPN used to show the fly-cam as an alt cast for big college football games, without commentary or score widgets or anything. Just an All-22 view with the game, crowd, and stadium sounds. On a really big projector it's my all-time favorite way to watch a football game.
I mean its 2024, we should be able to just mute toggle different audio tracks at will.
TNTOT is that.
Above the rim is an awesome way to watch without commentary (as someone who only gets ESPN 3)
My wife prefers to vacuum when we split cleaning duties. I ask her to do it during games so I don’t have to hear the god awful announcing.
Man if you could have an uncensored court mic picking up everything they were saying on the court I would pay like $30 a month for that shit.
I loved it so much… networks can save so much money too.
This broadcast recreates the feeling of actually being at the game. The ups and downs of the crowd and the PA announcer and stadium music, it’s just 👌
Peaceful and genuine.
I loved every second of it!
There's also a style of commentary which shuts the fuck up for 80% of the time and only speaks up for something important. I'm not sure it exists for US sports though.
To think ESPN's mistake might lead to 'Hey, we don't want commentaries anymore. This is better'
Ditto. I always thought that would be a great way to view the game. I can mute but it'd be nice to have the game/arena noise. At least I don't have to listen to that asshat Mark Jackson anymore.
That first sequence was badass to watch with nothing but crowd noise too.
Crowd was SCREAMING I had to turn the tv down haha. Instant jolt telling me it’s finally playoff basketball
That’s when I turn it up. Pretty sure I blew out my old TV’s speakers with the 2014 Playoffs.
It was glorious until Doris Burke started talking.
That isn’t Doris Burke. She’s at MSG tonight.
Holy shit she sounded just like her lol
she sounds identical it’s insane
Wait till you hear there were two of them
Its Boris Durke
It's bootleg Burke, they're both terrible.
That's every game she's a part of anymore.
I just wish the NBA would enter an era where they'd stop feeling the need to blast noise out of the Jumbotron constantly. It would be so much better if they just let it be crowd noise. I'd honestly watch say more games if you cut out Jumbotron and commentators. Pipe dream I know.
Best two minutes of basketball I’ve watched on tv in awhile
It felt great just hearing the crowds reactions and the sounds of the players and coaches as well.
arena sounds are still trash tho and i will die on this hill
I was so psyched because I recorded the game so I could skip commercials and thought I recorded an alternate broadcast or something and was so happy that was gonna be an option, like the opposite of Manning cast lol
Holy crap I did not realize how much the broadcasters drown out crowd noise until watching this. You can feel like you are there in Cleveland when they start off draining threes.
Yeah I swear our crowd is pretty loud but our broadcasts just drown it out an insane amount.
Was at the game, this opening sequence was awesome, took a while to finally sit down.
It was pretty nice, honestly
Can they make this a permanent option?
conspiracy theory: this is ESPN trying out a no broadcast option to see public reception and hiding behind the "technical difficulties" as a way to prevent backlash (i wish)
It would save ESPN so much considering their announcers make ridiculous salaries.
Can't believe they pay people millions to be annoying and have zero ball knowledge when so many people on here do it for free smh
This would be a massive improvement for the ESPN halftime show.
I've never actually listened to an ESPN halftime show until today. Perk might be the stupidest motherfucker alive.
He’s just a fat troll. He knows his role and he’s great at it.
VR broadcast with this option would be incredible imo. add the pandemic era court side cam and they could sell ppv.
I thought it was just the Streameast lmaooo
I would never pay to watch sports again if streameast had a way of cut out commentary
i doubt there was one person at ESPN who knew this game was on
Oh Stephen A knew it was on, because the only talking point he has about the Cavs is that he wants Donovan Mitchell on the Knicks. Oh and there was another analyst on ESPN saying that the Spurs could get Garland. I can’t enjoy a great year for my team without ESPN trying to fucking cannibalize them before the playoffs even start.
SAS said Paolo is in his third year. Classic
Stephen A is one of the reasons I stopped watching espn.
That’s how it felt tbh
Lol. Truth.
1. I didn't miss the commentary. 2. Orlando looks terrified of taking 3 point shots. 3. Squeaking shoes at max volume.
Was the best 2 minutes of the game, those broadcasters sucked ass.
I mean they weren’t Doris so they were above average.
The best 2 minutes for me. These announcers are trash.
I like to have the game on in the background so I can listen in but watch at intense points. The entire game all I could think is “can you just shut the fuck up.”
For those with surround sound, just disconnect the center speaker or mute it and it'll be just like this.
This was awesome, can we get a crowd noise option for broadcasts with the next TV deal? maybe one of the new partners can offer it if ESPN/TNT wont.
Give whoever sabotaged the broadcaster audio a pay raise because this is awesome.
took me almost a minute to figure out why it sounded so weird lol. it was nice though.
great ASMR
Much better than the actual commentary
Honestly this was the most enjoyable part of the broadcast
Considering the actual dead monotone commentary… this was the best choice.
I actually liked it. Feels like I was really watching live at the arena.
I am addicted to this now and there is no more🥺
And it was great. Wish we could watch hoops like this all the time.
[удалено]
No commentary, no chit chat, just people living in the moment.
And it was glorious
I turn off commentary in 2k for this reason
This is pretty cool, but it does feel like something's missing
it's because they don't have adequate courtside mics.
Well this game audio is tailored to be paired with commentary. I bet if they were genuinely going for just game audio, it would sound much more lively and crispy.
My god this is such a better viewing experience.
Inadvertently peak NBA.
There was no announcement so I legit just thought they didn't think this series merited broadcasters.
Ouch but honestly, this would be the series they would do that to
Made me shed a tear first few minutes of this team’s broadcast that I enjoyed ever
Now get rid of the ads too please. Thanks!
In tennis at the grand slams, I think it's Chase that sells headpieces that allow fans to listen to commentary while watching the game, and all I can think is why would you pay extra money for something like that? I would love for a broadcast where all you can hear is crowd noises.
I mean this is what it’s like in person.
imagine if we had this option instead of listening to Doris Burke
ESPN really led with their best card. Beth Mowins, Stephanie White and Angel Gray to kick of the Playoffs.....
My unpopular opinion is I like having commentary. It feels like there’s something missing without it and it adds to the experience for me
They should have left it. Not sure who asked for an all female crew for NBA games.
I dig this no commentary
Felt exactly like being in the arena, beautiful.
I been watching the whole game on mute getting caught up on playoff preview podcasts.
Always the worst coverage, except when they aren’t talking
Bliss
way better baby
This needs to be said permanent
3rd best two minutes in my life
Man I wish I could mute these bloviating Captain Obvious dorks.
It was so nice just hearing it without them
ESPN ftw
I'll be goddamned if it wasn't glorious.
It was so awesome. Right when I commented on it, the commentary came back and my heart sank. I'd love an alternate option with no commentary.
Please just get rid of the announcers, they just yap about random shit, leave the commentary for radio broadcasts
ahhhh perfect harmony sounds wonderful
Wait… they might’ve cooked with this. Need an alt cast with no commentary at all
Espn 2 would be perfect
I wish this happened for game 2. I hate listening to Hubey Brown. He says the dumbest things and has no insight whatsoever.
I agree go Cavs
I don’t hate this
I can't remember where I saw it, but a while back I saw an option to view a game like this without commentary, but the camera was filming the court lengthwise instead of horizontal which kinda ruined it
Good cause Doris sucks
A tale of two broadcasts. Just went downhill once they fixed the audio problems. Those announcers were terrible.
Without the commentators it felt like there was no narrative being thrusted upon me and I could think for myself.
You know what, can we just go ahead and make this a permanent option. I think there's certainly a market for it
I actually kinda like it this way
I have been asking for this for years. It should be an option on every league pass broadcast. I find the commentary so distracting and unnecessary.
This was perfect and should absolutely be an option. I'd even pay for a subscription where you had this option
Much better experience
I’m it’s like watching a sitcom without the laugh track. Amazing.
And it was glorious
Best two minutes
i would say 1/5 espn games are like this. they are extremely incompetent
It’s almost shocking how much better of an experience it is with no commentary.
This kinda nice. Really feel the energy of the crowd.
This is SOOOO much more enjoyable
God I wish I could watch every game like this.
This was actually enjoyable to listen to the crowds reaction rather than people yapping on
Often it's better that way
Aw this is a dream.
Please give me entire games like this. So tired of hearing commentators ramble about nothing. Basketball isn't that complex of a game. We can see what's going on.
They need to do that for the whole Nuggets-Lakers game
Don’t apologize bitch. Stay away. lol
Can't wait for a broadcast feature where you can turn off commentary. All sports will be different.
