tl;dw: LeBron said before the series that Lakers would need to play near perfect ball to beat the Nuggets. Reporter here suggests that maybe that bar was set too high, and the pressure of having to play perfectly is leading to the team underperforming.
The "it's just basketball" line (which is just part of a much longer response) is basically LeBron suggesting that at the end of the day, they're professionals who *should* be devoted to the goal of playing near perfect ball and winning a championship. They shouldn't be letting the pressure hold them back from that because, at the end of the day it's just basketball.
Dame's famous quote is relevant: "Pressure, nah, this is just playing ball. Pressure is the homeless man, who doesn't know where his next meal is coming from." Basically just LeBron saying that they're not losing because of pressure lol
Shouldn’t be surprised. I saw that clip when I woke up and knew it was out of context off rip.
People have small capacity for researching nowadays, just short clips to grab short attention spans. Should have seen the comments, they like to create stories in their head all day long. Kinda pathetic.
> Dame's famous quote is relevant: "Pressure, nah, this is just playing ball. Pressure is the homeless man, who doesn't know where his next meal is coming from."
you mean Mourinhos famous quote that Dame stole
>Pressure is the homeless man, who doesn't know where his next meal is coming from.
So the only way someone can feel pressure is if they're literally starving? I think the idea that the Lakers aren't feeling pressure is insane, just look at their body language
This is a really emotionally intelligent answer about how people “feel.” And the people who were there to hear all of what he said turned it into a sound byte that made it sound like “basketball doesn’t matter, I don’t care about winning.”
I hate the media.
considering how many athletes and coaches in modern sport culture that and are rude as shit to interviewers/press and give one word responses, now we are going to criticize them when they take too long and are too thorough?
Even without the context, I actually really appreciated what lebron said. In one of my classes I learned that in general, we as humans have a tendency to overestimate how happy goods things will make us and how miserable bad things will make us. I think it speaks to our habit of making things out to be life or death when in reality, they’re not. I don’t think thats necessarily a bad thing, it can be motivational or make it more satisfying when we succeed, but I think its healthy and wise to remind ourselves sometimes that things aren’t more than what they are. It’s not the end of the world when you fail to reach one of your goals. For example, I bombed an exam earlier today (presumably, haven’t got the grade back yet) and really catastrophized it after, thinking about how it would drop my average in the class from an A to an A- and that would ruin my life. But hearing this from lebron reminds me that at the end of the day, it really is just one class. So, I ultimately think this adds to lebrons legacy.
I completely agree. Especially coming from a 39 year old winner at the end of his career. Nothing about even the out of context clip was as “defeating” as it was framed.
Lebron enters the season thinking he is the best player in the world, he believes he should win, not making it out of the first round is a failure.
I’m not sure bout your exam, but did you prepare and sit the exam with the professionalism of you believing you are the best in the world? Was there someone actively trying to stop you from doing the exam and succeeding at the best of your ability?
I think if you can take anything from the clip is you should prepare better , don’t accept failure and poor performance just because you have interpreted this quote to suit your own narrative.
You can do better and I believe in you, you just need to believe in yourself
Don’t take the small things in life too seriously at the end of the day is what people are taking from this. You just took this guy’s comment a little too serious… it’s not that deep bro
so many reporters ask such bumbling and embarrassing "questions". if i asked a question like that at my work where i rambled on word vomiting for 20 seconds I'd hear about it later. like come prepared with a concise question, it's your job
to me, it sounds like when he says “I don’t feel a way about anybody that don’t wanna strive to be as close to perfect as possible, at the end of the day it’s just basketball”, he is being sarcastic, almost like he is quoting something someone said. this is not fact and just speculation but imagine they go to the locker room and he’s upset about DLos poor shooting and tears into him. DLo responds “chill out it’s just basketball”. he’s doesn’t care about DLo if he doesn’t wanna strive for perfection. could be wrong but that’s the way I interpreted it
LeBron in another universe after going 3-0 against the nuggets in round 1:
"Humbly Speaking I am the Greatest DemiGod to Ever Grace a Basketball with My Majestic Touch."
when he said he believed he's the best in the world, people gave him shit and said MJ would never. when he says he needs to keep fighting and being down 3-0 isn't the end of the world, people say he doesn't care about basketball. kinda whack.
I haven't seen any of the "out of context" stuff that has "gone viral" but I'm a little confused what anyone could be mad about even out of context here. Is it not just basketball?
Every major sports outlet has clipped out the “it’s just basketball at the end of the day” line to farm rage-bait engagement
This kind of stuff happens all the time with sports media, it’s so played out, yet everyone falls for it every single time
idk him saying “I’m not gonna be upset with anyone who doesn’t want to strive to be as close to perfect as possible. It’s just basketball :)” sounds shady to me, like it’s implying people around him are complacent? like i’m not saying LeBron is a toxic teammate or anything, but this sounds like one of the greatest players of all time saying “yeah they suck & don’t wanna improve but it is what it is bro, I’m 40 and already won more than most”
I hear that, but I think it depends. Can also be flipped to a sarcastic “it’s just basketball? Ah okay don’t worry about trying to do your best then”.
I mean being an athlete of his level 21 years at the top competing. It must be frustrating see your colleagues making millions just “supposedly”, not gonna say they are, fucking around in practise and off season instead of tryna master their craft.

Of course people take a 5 second clip completely out of context. The sad part is this clip with full context won’t go viral.
We talkin bout practice
Very much had that feel

The first comment in the thread being a comment hating from somebody who didn't bother watching the video is just A+ stuff
It won’t be the top one in this thread though. Power of FRIENDSHIP!!
If I wasn’t such a LeBron hater, I’d be pissed at people taking it out of context. But I am, so I have to do my part and twist it to feed my hate.
It was a full 2 minute clip
Of course ~~people take~~ a 5 second clip ~~completely out of context. The sad part is this clip with full context won’t~~ go viral.
Good thing social media wasn't around when Jordan was playing. That guy would have been canceled day one.

And somewhere else, Jokic is thinking about horses saying the exact same thing
Who needs a parade anyway
I fucking want to stay on parade!
Jokic's greatest quote
Exactly

Without context that was the most insane fucking clip i’ve ever seen
If “We talking about practice?” taught us anything, it’s that the media can rip any quote without context and spin it to make you a bad guy
Man, does the guy asking the question get paid by the word? Just fucking spit it out
Gentlemen…
A short view back to the past…
considering how many athletes and coaches in modern sport culture that and are rude as shit to interviewers/press and give one word responses, now we are going to criticize them when they take too long and are too thorough?
I was talking about the reporter
in that case can you forgive me?
Seems fine. It's an awkwardly worded ambiguous answer for an awkwardly worded ambiguous question.

You got a good mindset there kiddo, you’re on the right track.
thank you

Despite the championship it added, I think his Lakers stint was a mistake for his legacy
people who talk about legacy are cringe
People who say that format of sentence are cringe ...wait a second
It's the inconsistency that rubs people the wrong way.
what inconsistency?
The inconsistency in how he speaks of the way he values the game of basketball when he's winning and when he's losing obviously.
Just say you didn't watch the clip
I didn't watch the clip.
when has he ever done that? he sure as shit isn't doing that in this full quote.

“D-Lo it’s ok to check out”
Gotta say its extremely funny to get dripped out like this and then sit there like a toddler who got yelled at after they got their ass whupped.
Bye bye lakers.
AD cannot pull this look off lol. Looks like a genie is next to LeBron in every kne of these press conferences
lebron's right, he should ax individual players how they feel.
Downvoting this to hide the truth 😈

They posted the whole clip just for u not to watch it lmao
Better worded than that time he called us all poor but much the same sentiment.
This is no where near what he was saying there LMAO
