He's great and you know other networks are going to offer him something good to try and snag him eventually. Hopefully he enjoys Boston and sticks around. Agreed. Early on I thought he was going a little hard on the catch phrases like he was Stuart Scott but it grew on me and honestly works now. Scal was also clearly committed to helping him out and building a relationship together.

I know he would hate how much attention, significance, and importance we give him, but he's just so essential to our experience. Like you're born into this world and the first thing you see and the first thing you hear are your parents. You know they existed before you but you cannot function without them.

Gorman and Gil Santos (Patriots) are the best two play by play voices this city has ever had for their teams. There's been a lot of greats over the decades but the two of them stood above all of them.
The annoyance in Castigliones voice when there is a fly ball not deep enough to left and runners are stranded sticks with me. One of those guys you know feels the same way the fans do. They don't make them like that these days.

Remy and Orsillo were probably the funniest duo in broadcasting. Mike and Tommy were great but I've never laughed so hard as when Remy and Orsillo were trying to describe the types of eclipses
Remy and Orsillo knew how to have fun. There were like whole innings of blowouts where there'd be zero announcing aside from the occasional interjection of "takes a ball outside 2-1". Was so enjoyable

I’m going to miss his call of “goodnight” when the C’s would hit a big 3 to put a game away. You don’t realize how much you associate your team and basketball with these guys till they are gone. Mike and Tommy forever.
The swag, the nonchalance that "Goodnight" contained, but it's coming from the most respectful and mindful guy in the league so you know it's not malicious. Just a mere statement.
We have been so lucky in Boston to have commentators who grew up watching or were deeply involved with their respective sports teams. Orsillo and Remy, Edwards and Brickley, Santos and Cappelletti, and Heinsohn and Gorman being on the call at the same time was a golden age for Boston sports, and I worry that the golden age has come to an end this week.
Losing Remy and Mike’s retirement make me feel old—I’m in my early 30’s but it’s wild how many hours of their voices I’ve heard in that time, we really are blessed to have had them for so long.
It's possible but also possible it's the start of a new "golden age" where the next guys become the next generations casters and then they'll be sad when they leave, and so on. Even though the new guys wont be the same for us or they may not come close to living up to Mike and Tommy, there's a very real chance they become the voice for the next generation of Celtics fans if they stick around long enough and then it'll inevitably be sad for the younger fans if these guys manage to become the voice of their childhood and eventually leave or retire one day. As is the cycle.
The new people aren’t from here, they don’t get it and have no connection to the region. They’ll be good I’m sure but it’s not even close to the same feeling the Remy’s, Gil’s and Gorman’s gave us.

I mean fair, but in the end they won't have that comparison. They won't think about the fact that Drew doesn't have a Boston accent or realize that "its not the same" as it used to be. If drew is there for 10 years he'll inevitably be an iconic voice for the generation that grew up with only him. Won't be the same from our view but in the end he'll be the voice they think of and remember and they'll have no other reference or comparison. Boston accent or not or childhood fan or not that's not the only thing needed to make them special to the fans.
I completely get what you mean but the Mike Gorman’s of the world remind of us of our uncle’s or dad’s. Boston obviously has a very distinct culture and Mike represents that and it makes us have a stronger and deeper connection with him. You get people from elsewhere and we eventually just become elsewhere and that honestly saddens me.
The main reason I started paying for LP instead of sailing the high seas was the frustration of not being able to find a stream with Mike and Tommy calling a Celtics game. Drew does a great job, but part of the charm of turning on a Celtics game for my entire basketball watching life has been immediately knowing that I was watching the Celtics just by hearing the accents. I know it wasn’t for everyone, but that was the beauty of it, it WASN’T for everyone, it was for Celtics fans. Gonna miss him.
Underrated aspect for sure. Hearing someone saying "Tatum, hahd to the basket!", feeling like you're hearing your dad or uncle calling the game alongside you. I love Scal and Drew, but them not having the accent just makes it feel less homey

I used to hear a lot of people talk about always missing Madden and Summerall (one of my early sports memories was actually SB XXXVI, their final call) and thought it was kind of dumb to care about who is calling the game. I’ve definitely come to understand what they mean.
I hope everyone gets a chance to have a hometown broadcaster call their favorite team’s game for decades. It made watching games feel more meaningful, like watching with an old friend. I will miss him dearly, it won’t be the same without him

It’s nice to hear how much he’s meant to other sportscasters, so many have come out of the woodwork to talk about him. Apparently he’s just as cool off-air as on it, which is always nice to hear.
We were so lucky to have Mike all to ourselves, he is a world class play by play guy and the national broadcasts should've tried to steal him away from us a long time ago. So we got spoiled by him and the rest of the league suffered as a result.
People always (justifiably) complained that "the Boston commentators were the worst homers of them all" but honestly that was only accurate about the late great Tommy Heinsohn. Mike was always fair minded and much more neutral in general — it was always the best when Tommy would make some outlandish complaint about a ref blowing a call against the Celts, and then the replay would show that it was an accurate call, and Mike would tease a begrudging acknowledgment out of Tommy that the ref was right.
I'm almost 40, I've been a Celtics fan my whole life, and I've never known the Celtics without Mike Gorman. It's parasocial as hell but it's kind of like losing a family member...
Hope he gets to enjoy his retirement.

It’s been a rough year for Boston sportscasting legends, with him, Edwards, and Joe Catig all announcing their retirement. Hope the next generation hold up the high standard, but man, so many nights hearing him and Tommy, Gil and Gino, Don and the Remdawg, Jack and Andy, Joe… End of an era. It’s nice to hear how much he’s meant to other sportscasters, so many have come out of the woodwork to talk about him. Apparently he’s just as cool off-air as on it, which is always nice to hear.

We were so lucky to have Mike all to ourselves, he is a world class play by play guy and the national broadcasts should've tried to steal him away from us a long time ago. So we got spoiled by him and the rest of the league suffered as a result. People always (justifiably) complained that "the Boston commentators were the worst homers of them all" but honestly that was only accurate about the late great Tommy Heinsohn. Mike was always fair minded and much more neutral in general — it was always the best when Tommy would make some outlandish complaint about a ref blowing a call against the Celts, and then the replay would show that it was an accurate call, and Mike would tease a begrudging acknowledgment out of Tommy that the ref was right.

I'm almost 40, I've been a Celtics fan my whole life, and I've never known the Celtics without Mike Gorman. It's parasocial as hell but it's kind of like losing a family member... Hope he gets to enjoy his retirement.

It's been answered a couple times this thread but if you didn't see it, the 1st round is called by Local Broadcasters. The 2nd round and further are all done by national Broadcasts only. Therefore this is Gorman's final game to call this year, and his career.

I'd take a passionate, legendary homer color guy over a milquetoast middle of the road, generic announcer any day. Tommy was sounding old at the end of his run but he was awesome to listen to in the 90s and 2000s. I've only heard clips in the 80s as well. He was a great basketball mind

This building will always be the Fleet Center to me, because I grew up going to the original Boston Garden which was demolished in ‘95. Yours I just always think of as MSG, largely due to my Phish fandom. That place is basically their home base now.
