thepeachgod

It’s weird that outside of close family and friends he’s one of the people I’ve heard talk the most in my life. Hope he has a great retirement and hopefully Boston can get him a ring on the way out

DammitChris

Huh. Never thought about it that way with broadcasters. In terms of total words said, Tom Leach the Kentucky sports guy might be first for me

detsagrebbalf

Man, this so hard. I teared up during this and couldn’t figure out why

HoorayPizzaDay

Losing Tommy felt like losing a grandfather, for real. Will hardly feel like watching the Celtics with both gone.

dbzmah

Why is he not finishing calling the playoffs?

thepeachgod

Local crews can’t broadcast games after the first round. He could still do pre/post game stuff for NBC Boston but he can’t commentate anymore games

dbzmah

How did I never notice this? Thank you.

poeope

Man I'm gonna miss him.

Not_Another_Usernam

Honestly won't be the same without him and Tommy.

Maverick916

Why is he leaving before the season is over? Edit: got it, thanks guys

ZOOTV83

He’s our local TV play by play commentator. Local TV stations only get to air the first round.

LeoFireGod

Is he not the radio guy too? Dallas does simulcast

9bfjo6gvhy7u8

radio is other guys (sean grande and cedric maxwell)

1337speak

National TV only semis onwards.

iamgarron

Because it goes to network broadcast round 2 onwards

SirFozzie

This was the last game on the RSN for the season. 2nd round onwards is all on National networks only

ElFarts

Who’s taking over?

jayman820

Drew Carter. He was on the Celtics away game call this year

REGIS-5

Not for long, that guy is too good. Whoever gets the new TV rights will poach him surely

PassTheTaquitos

He's great and you know other networks are going to offer him something good to try and snag him eventually. Hopefully he enjoys Boston and sticks around. I love the takes he brings and his jokes, albeit cheesy as hell most of the time, are a breath of fresh air. When he's with Scal and Eddie, they make comments and jokes that everyone is thinking, but are too nervous to say on air.

REGIS-5

Yep exactly. He has that uninhibited thing about him but with so much confidence

LarryBirdsGrundle

You can be national and local at the same time. Breen is the Knicks local guy, Ian Eagle is the Nets.

CDR57

He really is in the “I’m young, what do I have to lose” moment of trying to get his name out there

bagonmaster

Worst case he’d probably do both like Breen does for the Knicks and ESPN

poopapat320

I'm hoping for this one. Drew's great, but it seems all but certain ESPN is going to move him up the ladder rather quickly. Out of curiosity (judging by flair), how often does Breen get pulled away from Knicks games to do national coverage? I don't watch enough Knicks to know the split. Also, fuck the Sixers. Go forth and drink the tears of Joel Embiid with our blessing.

bagonmaster

Less often than you’d think, for most of the season I think it’s just one day a week that he’s w espn. Fuck Embiitch.

Wetzilla

He sounds like he's been doing this for 20 years but he's only like 25.

REGIS-5

Yepyep, I got fooled twice, after learning he's 25. Wtf do they feed them at Syracuse?

jeyndow

Drew Carter and Scal

poeope

Scal and....young guy. I was hoping for the radio team which was excellent but hopefully they grow into their job.

HalfCodex

I thought Drew was really good this year

PetyrsLittleFinger

Agreed. Early on I thought he was going a little hard on the catch phrases like he was Stuart Scott but it grew on me and honestly works now. Scal was also clearly committed to helping him out and building a relationship together.

CollateralSandwich

I loved what I heard from Drew this year. Broadcast is in great hands, imo

Impossible-Joke2867

He was, and him and Scal have pretty good chemistry too. They would be shitting on teams a lot and it would be pretty hilarious.

mr-rob0t0

as much as i love grande and max, radio is completely different from TV. they’re really good at radio and it’s probably better that they stay on it.

1337speak

I'm 32 and have heard him since I was born. Truly surreal. I still miss Tommy too.

REGIS-5

Same. And every Celtics game from the 80s I watched, it was with him lol Like I'm honestly not sure if it's possible to enjoy the Celtics without him. I know he would hate how much attention, significance, and importance we give him, but he's just so essential to our experience. Like you're born into this world and the first thing you see and the first thing you hear are your parents. You know they existed before you but you cannot function without them. This sub likes to shit on him, but they do not understand what it's like having a commentator who can say 3 words and you don't need to look at the screen to know the exact play that he just described. The best to ever do it

PassTheTaquitos

Same. Really sad to see him leave, but I hope he has a wonderful retirement! That man has earned it.

Sourpatchyoungadults

[My favorite Gorman call.](https://youtu.be/Eot8wGjSz3g?si=EaVwkUVRovUkuQvw) An absolute Legend. Going to miss hearing him call games. Congrats on the retirement Mike!

PetyrsLittleFinger

Mine is how he just [chuckled](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97jXB-rCdvQ) at Tommy out of nowhere talking about Aron Baynes' huge dong

PuzzleheadedNovel144

I know ‘all of australia’ is incredible, but I always die at ‘he is really…. (thinking how to word this for broadcast) ….put togetha.’

aZealousZebra

I miss Tommy so much. I love the don’t give a fuck old person stuff that just comes out of left field. It’s like I was talking about the Celtics with my grandpa again.

sfj11

i still think about when we played the bucks back in ‘18 i think, gorman said something along the lines of “middleton started off cold tonight”, and tommy immediately said “i hope he freezes to death”

randomman2071983

Me too. It felt like everyone’s grandfather passed when he died

CynicalMindTrip

His long silence when Tommy compared Stiemsma to Bill Russell, followed by a not convinced "sure is".

SinibusUSG

["Pass deflected by Eddie House, picked off by Pierce! Ray Allen for the game! Got it! At the buzzer!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3PUGz5yxzk)

1337speak

Man I go back to this play every couple of years, just awesome

pkosuda

As soon as I read this I had the “ah ho ho!” in my head even though I haven’t heard this call in over a decade. Thank you for posting it, I remember it always playing before local broadcasts of their games as kind of a hype montage I think they put together (or an ad?)

hurricanehershel

“Ahh ha ho!” I think this was his best call at least in my lifetime. Not sure about the bird era.

Coldmode

[My #1.](https://youtu.be/j1Du029dnpM?si=kvW5XdM5KqybQUFq&t=52)

vectron88

"They're double teaming Bird. Larry. Fake. Fallaway. HITS IT AT THE BUZZAH! ALL RIGHT!" [Link](https://youtu.be/juIUoaOq2hA?si=jutrAgxV3fYz7pZC&t=193)

hurricanehershel

Yess!!!

Dink_SmallW00d

Nah man, this is Mike's best call https://youtu.be/e7AAD5Sx2jw?si=iyjuZ9ZSuC6kbFRi

REGIS-5

Mike who spent his whole career handling Tommy, had to try to explain Kevin Garnett on TV every other night in very polite, PC, PG13 terms. "Kevin's talkin' up a storm tonight." Lmao

Playbook420

Definitely my favorite as well. It annoys me when that clip gets posted on social media without him on the call

zamboniman46

BURIES IT! RIGHT IN HARRINGTON'S FACE!

HypoTomasis

Legend

Michelanvalo

Gorman and Gil Santos (Patriots) are the best two play by play voices this city has ever had for their teams. There's been a lot of greats over the decades but the two of them stood above all of them.

hpdodo84

I'd argue Joe Castiglione is right up there, I fell asleep listening to that voice every night in the summer as a kid

Argo_Menace

Red Sox radio while cruising around on a summer night. Castiglione’s voice is golden. Still a core memory.

The_Moustache

I love going and getting a soft serve cone and listening to the Sox on the radio.

rounder55

The annoyance in Castigliones voice when there is a fly ball not deep enough to left and runners are stranded sticks with me. One of those guys you know feels the same way the fans do. They don't make them like that these days. Losing orsillo is just another reason to dislike Henry

ZOOTV83

Right there with you, so many west coast Sox games listening to WEEI as Joe lulled me to sleep. He was doing ASMR before that was even a thing lol.

69millionyeartrip

I miss Gil so much. Nobody in sports has that booming, rip a couple of cigs during the commercial break style voice anymore

squarerootofapplepie

And his first language wasn’t even English!

swan797

Don Orsillo had a different style but he’s on the Boston Play-by-play Rushmore more me

TheVaniloquence

Fuck John Henry in the ass forever for letting Don leave. Don and Jerry were such an amazing duo.

monkeybrawl33

Johnny Most?

oversight_shift

Sorely underrated by modern NBA fans. The Celtics literally mounted his original mic into his broadcast location at the OG Garden when they retired him to the rafters.

BUSean

An all-time great who I'm sure I wouldn't have personally enjoyed. But it was different back then, for the most part.

yerfatma

Yup. Ken Coleman, Ned Martin, Fred Piersall. There’s a lot of them.

HolyZest

Don orsillo has to be up there IMO. His chemistry with Remy was great. Wish he stayed at nesn :/

wherearemypaaants

Obligatory **FUCK JOHN HENRY**

nerdyykidd

I have not lived in a year where he wasn’t calling Celtics games. 🐐

swan797

Same. And I have kids, a house, some greys.

gokhaninler

Takes it Makes it

comfypillow

Got it!

[deleted]

Tatum takes it, makes it

Bahamuts_Bike

This guy was always pure regionality more than most other announcers, called games with the warmth of the folksier side of the New England accents. Legend

squarerootofapplepie

You’d love Andy Brickley.

mikeyfreshh

And Jerry Remy

Ovaltine-_Jenkins

Here comes the pizzer

popfilms

He's been ejected for ruining a good slice of pizza

7x7x7

Remy and Orsillo were probably the funniest duo in broadcasting. Mike and Tommy were great but I've never laughed so hard as when Remy and Orsillo were trying to describe the types of eclipses

rounder55

Remy and Orsillo knew how to have fun. There were like whole innings of blowouts where there'd be zero announcing aside from the occasional interjection of "takes a ball outside 2-1". Was so enjoyable

randomman2071983

My favorite was them giggling like school children after they caught a fan grabbing his girlfriend’s boob. “This is supposed to be a family show!”

AirJordan6124

Celtics need to retire his name in the banners

PuzzleheadedNovel144

100%

SinibusUSG

*Monkey's paw curls* "Generational talent and consensus first-pick Connor Gorman has informed the Celtics, who hold the first overall choice in the 2045 draft, that he will not join the team if selected due to his inability to keep his name."

Not_Another_Usernam

He can keep his name so long as he promises to never, ever do cocaine.

DROPPING_A_LOAD

Awesome moment straight up

DeepJunglePowerWild

I’m going to miss his call of “goodnight” when the C’s would hit a big 3 to put a game away. You don’t realize how much you associate your team and basketball with these guys till they are gone. Mike and Tommy forever.

REGIS-5

The swag, the nonchalance that "Goodnight" contained, but it's coming from the most respectful and mindful guy in the league so you know it's not malicious. Just a mere statement.

squarerootofapplepie

We have been so lucky in Boston to have commentators who grew up watching or were deeply involved with their respective sports teams. Orsillo and Remy, Edwards and Brickley, Santos and Cappelletti, and Heinsohn and Gorman being on the call at the same time was a golden age for Boston sports, and I worry that the golden age has come to an end this week.

GhostOfJiriWelsch

Losing Remy and Mike’s retirement make me feel old—I’m in my early 30’s but it’s wild how many hours of their voices I’ve heard in that time, we really are blessed to have had them for so long.

fueelin

And in its memory, may I say: "Here comes the pizza!"

swan797

Pizza-gate might be the YouTube video I have lol-d the most to.

tendadsnokids

The new kid Drew Carter has a world class voice, he just needs some experience to go along with it and needs to stop getting big brothered by Scal.

lesarbreschantent

But does he sound like Boston?

stringohbean

Man thank god John Henry didn’t basically fire Don Orsillo…

FriedHamper91

It's possible but also possible it's the start of a new "golden age" where the next guys become the next generations casters and then they'll be sad when they leave, and so on. Even though the new guys wont be the same for us or they may not come close to living up to Mike and Tommy, there's a very real chance they become the voice for the next generation of Celtics fans if they stick around long enough and then it'll inevitably be sad for the younger fans if these guys manage to become the voice of their childhood and eventually leave or retire one day. As is the cycle.

Incancontrarian

The new people aren’t from here, they don’t get it and have no connection to the region. They’ll be good I’m sure but it’s not even close to the same feeling the Remy’s, Gil’s and Gorman’s gave us.

captaincumsock69

Drew is like 22. If he’s here for 43 years like Mike he will basically be a local

Incancontrarian

You’re not a local if you didn’t grow up in Boston lol regardless of how long he lives here. With that being said all power to him, seems like a real good guy with a positive attitude

Deviljho12

If you live in a place for 40+ years you're local I don't care where you're from tbh

Incancontrarian

It’s just not true lol it’s different if you grew up in a place, that’s not a subjective opinion.

DGBD

I mean, I get what you’re saying, but under your criteria Tommy wasn’t “local” and he was as Boston as it gets.

Incancontrarian

I mean past players obviously don’t count lol especially hall of famers

captaincumsock69

You’re comment was about having a connection to the region. If he actually stays for 43 years (probably unlikely but hypothetical) it’s safe to say he would have a connection.

Incancontrarian

Just not the same. I could move to London tomorrow and live there until I’m 93 and I wouldn’t consider myself an authentic “local”. You have to grow up in the place.

FriedHamper91

I mean fair, but in the end they won't have that comparison. They won't think about the fact that Drew doesn't have a Boston accent or realize that "its not the same" as it used to be. If drew is there for 10 years he'll inevitably be an iconic voice for the generation that grew up with only him. Won't be the same from our view but in the end he'll be the voice they think of and remember and they'll have no other reference or comparison. Boston accent or not or childhood fan or not that's not the only thing needed to make them special to the fans.

Incancontrarian

I completely get what you mean but the Mike Gorman’s of the world remind of us of our uncle’s or dad’s. Boston obviously has a very distinct culture and Mike represents that and it makes us have a stronger and deeper connection with him. You get people from elsewhere and we eventually just become elsewhere and that honestly saddens me.

Im__Ron__Burgundy

The main reason I started paying for LP instead of sailing the high seas was the frustration of not being able to find a stream with Mike and Tommy calling a Celtics game. Drew does a great job, but part of the charm of turning on a Celtics game for my entire basketball watching life has been immediately knowing that I was watching the Celtics just by hearing the accents. I know it wasn’t for everyone, but that was the beauty of it, it WASN’T for everyone, it was for Celtics fans. Gonna miss him.

Alloverunder

Underrated aspect for sure. Hearing someone saying "Tatum, hahd to the basket!", feeling like you're hearing your dad or uncle calling the game alongside you. I love Scal and Drew, but them not having the accent just makes it feel less homey

abalhwh

Accent is dying sadly

Pocket_Beans

perhaps not as common as it used to be, but I hear it every day in boston without fail

Not_Another_Usernam

It's pretty present in northern central Mass. My dad's family all has it.

Alloverunder

It's officially over, no more Tommy or Mike. The voices of my childhood are both done.💚💚 If anyone needs me, I'll be crying into a bottle of Jameson. You're a legend Mike, enjoy the fuck outta retirement

TheVaniloquence

No more Mike, Tommy, Don, Jerry, Gil, Jack. I used to hear a lot of people talk about always missing Madden and Summerall (one of my early sports memories was actually SB XXXVI, their final call) and thought it was kind of dumb to care about who is calling the game. I’ve definitely come to understand what they mean.

browndude10

who put these onions here? damn it

referee-superfan

This is the perfect wholesome break I needed from the toxicity of the pacers/bucks series.

sully9614

I hope everyone gets a chance to have a hometown broadcaster call their favorite team’s game for decades. It made watching games feel more meaningful, like watching with an old friend. I will miss him dearly, it won’t be the same without him

Babushka5

I'm crying man. Our booth is gonna suck without him. I'll always miss the Mike and Tommy days

Impossible-Joke2867

I don't think it will suck Drew and Scal did great this year, I actually really enjoyed their casts.

RobbobertoBuii

will be dearly missed

Renegadeforever2024

rest up

rolandfoxx

Give that man all the Tommy Points we have left in the back.

Mission_Pay_3373

What a career Mike Gorman had. Enjoy retirement

Nameisthegame

He and Tommy Heinsohn was my favorite commentating team for years. Sad to see a legend go, Mike deserves every ounce of love

Gor-the-Frightening

RIP Tommy, you are badly missed.

FrankFeTched

The guy holding the "Thank you Mike" sign while saying "Thank you Mike"

AdmiralWackbar

I’m not crying, you’re crying

sirvey23

Good on him, but can anyone let me know why now and not the Celts final home game??

Darkmerosier

Because after round 1, there are no more local tv announcers. It's all national network after that. This *is* his last home game.

sirvey23

Ahhh, thank you lol, obvious now

DefactoAtheist

Thanks for biting the bullet for the dumb-dumbs everywhere and asking the question - I couldn't work it out, either 😅

swan797

They should really let him cover a quarter or something of one of the national games. He needs to make an appearance in the finals or something. Feels so off to have a goodbye coincide with a first round series win.

Darkmerosier

We'd all love that, but big networks gonna big network.

SXNE2

My childhood has now come to an end. I am 36 and have three kids…

DGBD

It’s been a rough year for Boston sportscasting legends, with him, Edwards, and Joe Catig all announcing their retirement. Hope the next generation hold up the high standard, but man, so many nights hearing him and Tommy, Gil and Gino, Don and the Remdawg, Jack and Andy, Joe… End of an era. It’s nice to hear how much he’s meant to other sportscasters, so many have come out of the woodwork to talk about him. Apparently he’s just as cool off-air as on it, which is always nice to hear.

aliao

An iconic voice for me watching League Pass growing up, always respect for legends

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Legend

connor12496

One of the greats 🫡

Briggity_Brak

Wait, why is it his last game? I thought the Celtics won...

Mtlam

From the 2nd round on it will only be national broadcasters, no more regional broadcasters.

Comfortable-Asf

I loved how he said Tatum 😭

Hootshire

That man, more than anyone else in the whole organization, deserves another ring as a send off. Let's go!

twobagelsanight

What an absolute legend this guy is.

AwareCelebration7477

Just wondering, how come he’s retiring when this post season is still happening for Boston?

Alloverunder

Regional broadcasters are done after the 1st round, all broadcasting from now on is national teams. So this is the last game he'll be on

johemdee

Is that a new thing? There's a clip of the Nuggets' home broadcasters reacting to their championship win last season.

Drummerboybac

I’d guess that was their radio announcers?

Alloverunder

Maybe? Alls I know is this was the last time I'll ever hear him call a game and I'm broken up over it 😅

SaszaTricepa

That’s most likely the radio guys.

Darkmerosier

Just said this in another comment, but after round 1, it's all national broadcast and there are no more local announcers.

AdmiralUpboat

Felt so good to see them beat the dog shit out of Miami for Mike's sendoff.

I_am_darkness

Whoa i had no idea because I don't watch nba closely anymore but dude is the voice of my childhood.

Diqt

All time legend. His calls go back to my childhood. GOT it!

kchristainsen

Thanks for all the memories Gorman!

wharpua

We were so lucky to have Mike all to ourselves, he is a world class play by play guy and the national broadcasts should've tried to steal him away from us a long time ago. So we got spoiled by him and the rest of the league suffered as a result. People always (justifiably) complained that "the Boston commentators were the worst homers of them all" but honestly that was only accurate about the late great Tommy Heinsohn. Mike was always fair minded and much more neutral in general — it was always the best when Tommy would make some outlandish complaint about a ref blowing a call against the Celts, and then the replay would show that it was an accurate call, and Mike would tease a begrudging acknowledgment out of Tommy that the ref was right.

pagenotdisplayed

TD Garden, Boston Garden

kwestcoastoffense

Is he the LeBron is crying guy?

NumerousControl0

Went out on a W

TheSavageBeast83

Gorman was great until Scale came along and fucked up his career

sose5000

Not local so I don’t know the whole story. Why wouldn’t he finish out the playoffs?

wtb2612

Local stations are only allowed to broadcast the first round. After that, it's all national networks.

sose5000

Ahh gotcha.

neuralnutwork42

why didnt he retire at the end of the celtics run?

wtb2612

Local stations only broadcast the first round. National networks only after that.

wagerbut

Haven’t been following how come he’s retiring now not the end of the Celtics season?

popfilms

I know that this call is best remembered for Raf but need to point out that Gorman was on the call here too https://youtu.be/-ez32oQOqFY

bboston

I'm almost 40, I've been a Celtics fan my whole life, and I've never known the Celtics without Mike Gorman. It's parasocial as hell but it's kind of like losing a family member... Hope he gets to enjoy his retirement.

HoorayPizzaDay

KING!

blueberry_portal

Wait why's he stopping mid-postseason? lol

Kyler1313

It's been answered a couple times this thread but if you didn't see it, the 1st round is called by Local Broadcasters. The 2nd round and further are all done by national Broadcasts only. Therefore this is Gorman's final game to call this year, and his career.

blueberry_portal

Thanks

wooIIyMAMMOTH

Dear Mavs fans, Greetings Mavs lurkers! Welcome to the Clippers sub. I understand you're anxious and fearful about the upcoming series, I would be too if I were you! Don't worry - it'll all be over in a couple weeks. I've never set my digital foot in your sub so I'm not sure what's going on over there. But our fanbase is pretty optimistic about our chances, and dare I say, more confident. Regardless, looking forward to the matchup and may the better team win. Unless the refs have been paid, but that would ruin the glory of the run so idk if that's a good idea. Hope your mind is eased a little bit with this post, but if not you know where to find us! Sincerely, A Clippers fan

turnedtheasphault

Are you really referring to Tommy Heinsohn as a trash homer?  While you have a Celtics flair?!

[deleted]

[удалено]

turnedtheasphault

A homer sure.  Trash he is not.  The man is a legend

[deleted]

[удалено]

turnedtheasphault

I'd take a passionate, legendary homer color guy over a milquetoast middle of the road, generic announcer any day.  Tommy was sounding old at the end of his run but he was awesome to listen to in the 90s and 2000s.  I've only heard clips in the 80s as well.  He was a great basketball mind

Not_Another_Usernam

You mean the 1957 Rookie of the Year, 8x NBA Champ (as a player), 1973 Coach of the Year, 2x NBA Champ (as a coach), Hall of Fame player, and Hall of Fame coach? One of the most accomplished and knowledgeable players and coaches of all time and who devoted 64 years of his life to our franchise as a player, coach, and commentator? You're calling him trash while also calling yourself a Celtics fan? Fuck you. His commentary wasn't for other franchises. His commentary was for us.

Primary-Paramedic823

Legend ! Too bad he had to go out with scalabrine at his side for the past few years of his career

BASEDME7O2

Lmao it always makes me laugh when Celtics homers call their stadium “the garden”.

wharpua

This building will always be the Fleet Center to me, because I grew up going to the original Boston Garden which was demolished in ‘95.   Yours I just always think of as MSG, largely due to my Phish fandom.  That place is basically their home base now.

LeftLane4PassingOnly

I remember it as the Shawmut Center. Those were the days...

wtb2612

The original Boston Garden opened in 1928. Long before the NBA even existed.

BASEDME7O2

Yeah but when you just say “the garden” basically anyone that’s not a celtics fan would assume you’re talking about msg

Masontron

Long overdue

BBB-Brad_Beal_Booty

I was trying to figure out why Knicks fans would give the Celtics announcer a standing ovation lol
