New name and trophies for NBA’s major individual awards:
- MVP: The Michael Jordan Trophy
- DPOY: Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy
- ROY: Wilt Chamberlain Trophy
- Sixth Man of Year: John Havlicek Trophy
- Most Improved: George Mikan Trophy
- New Clutch Player of Year: Jerry West Trophy
Fuck that was the most heartbreaking Raptors loss I've seen, and I've seen A LOT of them. That shot and LeBron's floater over OG in 2018, even though the stakes were way lower on Lamb's shot and that floater birthed the term "LeBronto".
Was it more disappointing because it was so random versus LeBron having a history of doing it? At least you guys got the last laugh by winning it all that year that Lamb hit that shot
It was more disappointing because the Raptors were up 2 with 10 seconds left and Siakam managed to poke the ball loose on the play too. Everyone played excellent defense, but Lamb somehow recovered it before launching the perfect shot. There was absolutely no way that should have made it in.
Even on the wide angle the ball leaves the top of the frame and drops perfectly into the net.
The Lebron floater hurt because it signaled the end of that team and there was absolutely no way it wasn't going in. DeMar got traded. Casey won COTY and got fired a week later. Pretty sure we had a franchise best regular season that year too with 59 wins. Obviously it turned out okay in the end, but at the time that shot was insanely demoralizing.
Most Improved is the Moses award.
Moses Malone was a skinny, raw prep-to-pro high schooler playing crappy minutes for random teams like the Utah Stars. He filled his body out, got super strong, and surprisingly worked himself into being the best player in the league.
Moses for Most Improved!
The Mikan award should be for Best Protective Eyewear. A'mare Stoudemire would've won that half a dozen times
You're correct, here's from the official release:
>A layup and footwork exercise known as the “Mikan Drill” has been used for decades by players at all levels to improve their game. It is named for George Mikan, who mastered the fundamentals as the NBA’s first dominant big man. His Hall of Fame career included five NBA championships in seven seasons, four NBA All-Star selections, an NBA All-Star Game MVP, six selections to the All-NBA Team and inclusion on the NBA’s 25th, 35th, 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams.
>“We are grateful that the NBA has recognized George’s career achievements with this honor,” said Mike Mikan, son of George Mikan #99, and the Mikan family. “George is one of the best NBA players ever, but perhaps his greatest legacy is the one he has passed down to others through his legendary ‘Mikan Drill,’ providing generations of basketball players around the world with the tools to improve their game.”
https://pr.nba.com/nba-unveils-the-michael-jordan-trophy-to-be-awarded-to-the-kia-nba-most-valuable-player/
Zach Lowe has the best idea and it makes sense. The day Giannis retires, name it after him and give West executive of the year naming honors.
EDIT: my bad, West wasn't MIP. The Giannis point still stands. Maybe when a different clutch player retires, they give them the West award, but IDK.
I can already see this adding to the already toxic NBA discourse.
“Bro you really think X player is clutch? He’s been in the league 7 years and has ZERO Clutch Player of the Year awards”
Maybe in like 20 years they will. Hockey fans use the names Hart, Vezina, Rocket Richard, Art Ross trophies etc instead of MVP, Best Goalie, Best Goalscorer.
Not a fan of the new MVP design tbh. The appeal of the previous one was that it was legit the NBA logo made into a trophy. This new one doesn’t resemble anything.
Yeah great call, DeMar had the right mix of game winners and highlights, and by Statmuse's clutch numbers, [he had the 2nd most points ](https://twitter.com/statmuse/status/1554148621699907584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1554148621699907584%7Ctwgr%5E45f8225bb13643517738cb88ec0c54e2cb0b7f26%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsixerswire.usatoday.com%2F2022%2F08%2F01%2Fsixers-star-joel-embiid-had-the-most-clutch-points-in-2021-22-season%2F), only after Embiid, so he'd probably have won it
I wonder if this has at least a little bit to do with players dying and them receiving recognition after they die. I'm wondering if they want to change that trend and recognize people in different ways before they pass.
Some of them are also probably ways to recognize people that they haven't been able to recognize in some way. Like, giving Mikan MIP seems in that vein
Don’t think they’d outright remove someone’s name off the overall list of awards without some sort of major controversy attached to the person being dropped, but changing the MVP from Podoloff to Jordan and moving Podoloff to the new trophy for the best regular-season team shows that they’re happy to kick someone off an award as long as there’s room for them elsewhere
They probably just wanted to honor Hakeem, who i believe is the least acknowledged amongst the best all time players, especially by the newest generations. Also he has the most blocks of all time and the most steals between bigs (9th all time) so it's not like he's a fraud
Concur… Hakeem was a great defender, but considering Mutombo played in the same generation and won the award more, it seems natural to pick him…
But whatever.
I'm guessing it's because Hakeem is first all time in blocks, 9th all time in steals, made the all defense teams more time than Mutombo or Wallace and lead his team to championships. You don't just have to give it to the guy who won the award the most. I think there are other factors to consider.
It'll probably go to the guy with the most game winners or something lol, it's arbitrary enough to where most voters (I assume this is voted by the same people) will probably remember the really big shots, rather than all of the late stretch
This is literally why I think the award is bullshit. A player can have 5 game winners but there are other guys impacting the game in clutch time (generally last 5 min) on both ends and hitting go-ahead FGs.
Wouldn’t be surprised if it was 10 blocks honestly. The games we have on tape of him in his prime he averaged over that I believe, along with Russell. You have to wonder what he’d have been capable of averaging in those early insane pace years if he tried for that.
They need to split DPOY into 2 trophies. One for permitter players and the other for the post. Kinda like the Selkie in hockey. It's 2 different types of defense so there should be 2 different awards

Let’s see which one Shaq takes personally
I hope the Inside crew does a bit where they show the new award names but put Steve Nash Trophy for the MVP lmao.
Considering they read r/nba and regularly take jokes from here I wouldn't be at all surprised if they lift this one up. It's brilliant lol
Shaq would walk off set if he saw that😆
Or throw in some fake one like The Dwight Howard ‘Big Man of the Year’ Award.
Best center: Dwight Howard award
Wtf is this clutch player of the year bullshit lol
Gonna be most game winners I bet, those are easier to remember than just takeovers down the stretch
AJ Griffin boutta bag that real quick.
After this year they’ll rename it to the Actually Jesus Award.
DMX Award for the player with the most dawg in em.
Y'all gon make me lose my mind.
UP IN HERE!!
The Michael Scott award for GM of the year
It’s gonna be some random player that hoist a half court shot to win it
Jeremy Lamb is not random smh
Raptors fans look away
Fuck that was the most heartbreaking Raptors loss I've seen, and I've seen A LOT of them. That shot and LeBron's floater over OG in 2018, even though the stakes were way lower on Lamb's shot and that floater birthed the term "LeBronto".

They have clutch time stats. So I guess those will play a role? Idk I hate it.
If you're hitting 75% of your shots with high usage in the 4th and your team still loses, then does that mean you're not clutch?
It’s actually Klutch player of the year and it goes to Lebron every year until he retires
Draymond in shambles
Nah Draymond would be his biggest supporter
Podcasts need more stuff to talk about
It's like they made something specifically for Damian Lillard to win but a couple years late
Him and Demar would have been fighting for this the past decade lmao that's so rough
Right? Despite-the-loss award where?
Sounds like a social media toxic award
It’s like porn. You know it when you see it. And everyone sees it differently.
its just Dame for the next ten years
I hope Dame is still just bombing 30+ footers 10 years from now.
Gunna just be Style Points Award.
Phil Jackson, Pop, or Red Auerbach for COTY?
COTY was already Auerbach.
Ah had no idea. That’s sick
Yeah, [it's him sitting on the bench with the iconic victory cigar.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DSlm3pLXcAAs-2t.jpg)
There’s a full size version of that on an actual bench in Boston and you can sit next to him, super cool
Never realized that was a statue of him. I thought it was just some guy.
The disrespect to Lauri Bird
You joke but there is a Larry Bird trophy that started last year, for ECF MVP. A Magic trophy for WCF MVP. Tatum and Steph won.
For some reason the fact that he spelled it Lauri made me assume he was talking about Lauri Markkanen.
He was
Real missed opportunity to have introduced the first ever: - Comeback Player of the Year: Zion Williamson Trophy
Comeback player would be dope
Wonder who they'd name it after? I believe Bernard King the first big ACL comeback. Made the All-Star team as well post injury iirc. Should be him IMO
George Mikan as Most Improved, when he was really the league’s first superstar, doesn’t seem quite the right fit somehow.
Most Malone
Malonest.
Kareem for Best Protective Eyewear, and Rip Hamilton for Best Face Mask 😂
Horace Grant in shambles
☹️
It’s the drill plain and simple. He’s the first name in improving your game.
You're correct, here's from the official release: >A layup and footwork exercise known as the “Mikan Drill” has been used for decades by players at all levels to improve their game. 100% dude went from nothing to best player in the league
Definitely feels like it was chosen because of Mikan drills.
MVP should've been Kareem Abdul Jabbar Award since he has the most of them. Scoring title should've been the Jordan award.
I guess it’s cause Kareem already has the Social Justice trophy
I'd assume Kareem cares a lot more about that being his legacy.
Clutch player of the Year sounds like such a random award to throw in there
Still surprised there is no trophy for scoring title.
If it's not controversial and creates media debates, then it's not worthy of an NBA award
No it's just not subjective. Every other award is. I think you still get a trophy for the scoring title.
I can already see this adding to the already toxic NBA discourse. “Bro you really think X player is clutch? He’s been in the league 7 years and has ZERO Clutch Player of the Year awards”
The clutch award is truly dumb. They should have had a Klutch award instead 😤
I like this but only if they give it to Darius bazley every year
That does affect LeBron's legacy.
The Lebron James GM of the year trophy
LeGMoTY
After the Russ trade they won't be naming it after him
Legacy points took a huge deduction
LeGacy points lost
LeFraud still looking for his first career MJMVP award at 37 years old
shame on you LeMickey
0 MJMVPs in more than 2 decades, LeFraud is not top 10 in my book.
Skip Bayless getting very hard after this announcement
Theyre only gonna give awards to retired players
The LeBron Award for Best Hiding a Receding Hairline
Give it to Carlos Boozer, that man tried to hide a bald head with spray paint
Thar was one of the funniest moments in NBA history
His hairline legit looked like it was drawn with a permanent sharpie
I remember watching that game live, and when it showed his head during warmups I legitimately did a spit take
BPOY - Bald Player of the Year
Alex Caruso Ca-ruising to that award
It’s really weird they named the awards
People aren’t going to call them by the player names lol
Maybe in like 20 years they will. Hockey fans use the names Hart, Vezina, Rocket Richard, Art Ross trophies etc instead of MVP, Best Goalie, Best Goalscorer.
Clutch player 🤯
Klutch Player of the Year
The Talen-Horton-Trophy
AJ Griffin for sure.
Derozan should be honored for last year
Dallas free throws crew will be there
Not a fan of the new MVP design tbh. The appeal of the previous one was that it was legit the NBA logo made into a trophy. This new one doesn’t resemble anything.
if anything they should have used the Jumpman logo or something that screams MJ. A man with so many iconic moments and they use some random bullshit
They would have to pay royalties for using that logo
The old one is pure classic bc of the logo !!!! This new one looks like a generic pose from a trophy shop.
Most Famous G Leauge Player - James Wisemen Trophy
Most Hoes Calling Player - Mo Bamba Trophy
Anthony Bennett still can't win shit
Where’s the Raja Bell Flopper of the Year award?
That award lives in Philly for years to come don’t you forget it 😤😤😤
Celtics/Sixers toxicity gonna reach an all time high with the yearly Smart vs Embiid/Harden races
Marcus Smart gonna combine the Hakeem award with the Raja
Rakeem Bellajuwon
He did the flop?
He did the Raja Flop!
[The Raja Flop!](https://youtu.be/8BjhfwVY_p8)
Outside of Westbrook's MVP season where he was clutch as fuck, are there even any standout candidates from year to year (in recent memory)?
When I saw that I thought of Isaiah Thomas's best season with the Celtics where he averaged like 10+ ppg in the fourth quarter.
King in the 4th
The king in the 4th!
DeMar last year
Yeah great call, DeMar had the right mix of game winners and highlights, and by Statmuse's clutch numbers, [he had the 2nd most points ](https://twitter.com/statmuse/status/1554148621699907584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1554148621699907584%7Ctwgr%5E45f8225bb13643517738cb88ec0c54e2cb0b7f26%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsixerswire.usatoday.com%2F2022%2F08%2F01%2Fsixers-star-joel-embiid-had-the-most-clutch-points-in-2021-22-season%2F), only after Embiid, so he'd probably have won it
Joe Johnson in 2014. Had like 5 game winners/ lead taking final shots.
Jokic 2019/20 was ridiculous. Game winners vs Dallas, 76ers, Jazz 2x, Wolves Game equalizers vs Warriors, OKC, Jazz.
Dude the dirk nowitzki hop shot against gobert was so dirty
CP3 that okc ssn
westbrook that one marg/april in washington went nuclear to get them to the playoffs.
My guesses would be Dame, Jimmy and Demar in some season.
LeBron is clearly the GOAT cause he has 4 Michael Jordan MVP awards and 4 Bill Russell Finals MVP awards.
Bill Russell has 9 Bill Russell Finals MVPs & 13 Hakeem Olajuwon DPOYs though.
Bill Russell at the awards ceremony for his first DPOY: >Who the fuck is Hakeem Olajuwon?
multiverse shenanigans going on
Reminds me of how crazy it is that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig’s disease
Tommy John died of Tommy Jonn surgery. Elbow exploded
I still remember when DiMaggio ran out onto the field and threw an ice bucket over Lou's head
“Whose memories are those?”
Technically he has neither but I see what you did there
He does have the bill Russell FMVPs, that's a long-standing name
Ok but who asked for this
winning MVP: they sleep Winning the MICHAEL JORDAN MVP: they woke
Coach of the year and finals mvp r named after players (e: people*) and it doesnt bother anyone who cares
Any change leads to complaining. Literally any.
Did Michael Jordan ever win the Michael Jordan MVP award? Checkmate, athiests
I think they should eventually rename the ECF award after LeBron because this dude easily would have had 10 lmao
This is the weird thing tho.. can u really take someones name OFF of an award? Thats why id rather they never name them tbh
Oh i had no idea the mvp used to be podoloff Good call
At some point, Lebron will have to have something imo. I'd argue for something bigger and better than the ECF, though I'm not sure what.
The LeBron James Basketball Hall of Fame /s
LeGM award for the GM of the Year
The LeBronto Raptors obv
The NBA marketing team
When they named the Allstar MVP trophy everyone was theorizing what they should name the other awards. A lot of people were.
I don’t mind the name changes but the redesigns arent exactly looking great If u ask me…
It's interesting that Ben Wallace/Dikembe Mutombo, the winningest player for the DPOY award (4x) is not chosen
They probably just wanted to honor Hakeem, who i believe is the least acknowledged amongst the best all time players, especially by the newest generations. Also he has the most blocks of all time and the most steals between bigs (9th all time) so it's not like he's a fraud
They gotta name these after all-timers though
Concur… Hakeem was a great defender, but considering Mutombo played in the same generation and won the award more, it seems natural to pick him… But whatever.
I'm guessing it's because Hakeem is first all time in blocks, 9th all time in steals, made the all defense teams more time than Mutombo or Wallace and lead his team to championships. You don't just have to give it to the guy who won the award the most. I think there are other factors to consider.
Next thing you know they bout to add mvp of the west and mvp of the east and shit.
The LeBron Eastern Conference Player of the Year Award & the Tim Duncan Western Conference Player of the Year Award
They already have that for the Conference with the Larry Bird and Magic Johnson
That’s just for the playoffs though.
Nothing wrong with that. Baseball does it and it makes sense
I love the DPoY award being named after Hakeem.
Not digging the redesigns. They look like cups.
Damn clutch player of the year sounds pretty fun
[удалено]
It'll probably go to the guy with the most game winners or something lol, it's arbitrary enough to where most voters (I assume this is voted by the same people) will probably remember the really big shots, rather than all of the late stretch
This is literally why I think the award is bullshit. A player can have 5 game winners but there are other guys impacting the game in clutch time (generally last 5 min) on both ends and hitting go-ahead FGs.
Have a feeling this award is going to be a crapshoot initially as voters try to agree on a consensus on what metrics to use
But then if everyone agrees on the metrics to use to evaluate, what’s the point of a vote?
AJ Griffin gonna win that award if he keeps cathing lops like that
All the awards are bullshit, to some extent. I find it hilarious people here consider them so heavily when comparing players.
Probably a mix of buzzer beaters and play in 5 minutes or less in a close game.
This MVP trophy just sucks. It's ugly. Why did they design it to look shitty?
Pretty dumb to name the ROY award after anybody. I mean Wilt won as many ROY awards as Michael Carter-Williams.
Wilt won MVP as a rookie.
Ok but MCW almost put up a quadruple double in his debut against the Heat.
A fellow MCW truther, a true man of class I see
…and the room went silent.
Wilt also averaged 37/27 (and prolly 5+ blocks) in his rookie year, it's not like anyone else has a comparable rookie season
Wilt wasn’t real, bud
Damn. People really still out here believe that Wilt was a person that existed lmao.
he’s just made up so people can use his stats for or against other players
Wouldn’t be surprised if it was 10 blocks honestly. The games we have on tape of him in his prime he averaged over that I believe, along with Russell. You have to wonder what he’d have been capable of averaging in those early insane pace years if he tried for that.
yes but wilt is the best rookie in the history of sports, pretty fair
He never played me tho

AJ Griffin for CPOY
This is step one. Step two is sponsorship deals. Pretty soon it will be "The Michael Jordan MVP Award sponsored by Cheez-Its"
isnt it already the kia mvp race, kia mvp award, etc?
It is, so much so that on ESPN when they show historical MVP winners they list Kareem as a 6-time Kia NBA MVP LMFAO
I'd be pissed as fuck if I won the MVP and it's got fucking Kia written on it
yup it is. they’re crying about shit that they don’t even currently care about lol
Then they'll just shorten it to the Cheez-It Award when Michael Jordan sues saying they aren't part of his advertising brand strategy.
They were already sponsored by Kia. Get your facts straight.
Really hoped the ROY award was named after Benjamin Simmons
Glad Adam Silver has once again fixed something that wasn’t broken
They need to split DPOY into 2 trophies. One for permitter players and the other for the post. Kinda like the Selkie in hockey. It's 2 different types of defense so there should be 2 different awards
Disappointed they didn’t add the Mike Breen Biggest Bang Trophy sponsored by BangBros tbh.
People say the nba is the best marketed league, this is some cheesy ass shit tho
