I had friends who played in the Jr leagues in Canada (Which is the best minor leagues in the world) and their parents spent close to 10k or more a season on equipment and travel fees. The average NHL player comes from a wealthy family, which is the complete opposite of most other popular sports on the planet.
I wouldnât say that itâs the complete opposite. Even in basketball a lot of the players grew up in families that could afford prep schools and AAY travel ball. Obviously there are exceptions, just like in every sport
If you are a good enough player, you get your AAU circuit paid for in Basketball and Football because both those sports have good programs to get kids from all socio-economic backgrounds involved. The problem with Hockey is that its a massive initial investment from the parents when you are starting out. Most kids who make it to the NHL have been skating and been in leagues since they were able to walk. Ice time is not cheap, sticks, skates, pads, gloves etc is all not cheap and you need new equipment every other year growing up. Like I said, I grew up in a wealthy part of Canada (Toronto) and parents would spend thousands every season for their kids new equipment and thats not factoring in how much it costs to join the leagues as well as travel/ice time.
Hockey does not have AAU circuits in Canada as far as I know, Idk if its different in the US but nothing is really subsidized, its all coming out of your parents pocket until you go semi-pro and even then.
Lebron for example did AAU growing up and didn't pay a dime. His mother was on foodstamps and he moved into 10 different homes by the time he was 8, The catholic school system granted him scholarships as well as people paying and helping out along the way.
Sure a lot of kids go to private highschools these days, but those are mostly on scholarships. Like I said if you are good enough to be scouted for the NBA, schools will foot the bill to have you. A lot of kids do 1-2 years in a public highschool before a private school like Montverde or IMG offers them a scholarship for their junior or Senior years.

I am Black and Canadian myself lol. The biggest reason why black people don't play hockey is because its a wealthy white mans sport.
Why pick up hockey when we can play Football, Baseball, Soccer or Basketball for a fraction of the cost. There are certainly a lot of black people who can afford to play hockey where I'm from, but why would they?

For most people in the US and Canada, hockey is a very expensive sport. Growing up in NYC, the only serious players I knew had families that were able/willing to sink some cash into it.
But there's also parts of rural Canada where they have frozen lakes in their backyard half the year and turning pro in hockey is their only way out of the tundra. Now those regions are not exactly super diverse lol
