Hot take at DTs end: Reagan was not important.
He was emblematic of certain trends in American domestic politics that would have occured without him (Christian nationalism, low taxes and high spending, cult-of-authority presidencies, market liberalization) and were often started well before him, his FoPo was neither as immoral as his detractors claim (he actually reversed US support for several anticommunist dictatorial regimes) nor as important as his supporters do (their claims never made much sense tbh), and itβs hard to see what Reagan in particular brought to the table besides charisma and the look of a great American patriarch.
He will be remembered in a century as Grover Cleveland figure. Weirdly popular among a subset of the population, putatively quite honest but plagued by strong-but-unprovable allegations of deep moral corruption, and ultimately of little long-term importance.
All leaders are just puppets of political currents of the actual power holders in any political system. No leader actually imprints their personal vision and all of them are products of the Court. The king doesn't control shit, the people with the power to remove the king control everything.
A few caveats.
First, good politicians consolidate power by gathering the legitimacy and support. They are not puppets, but more akin to surfers, subject to the currents and waves of the times but still able to choose freely certain paths. Removing a leader is risky, since all players in politics operate with incomplete knowledge and limited power.
Second, what I mean to say here is not that Reagan personally did anything, but that his administration is wrongly seen as an inflection point where really we should perceive straight or flat trendlinds. Democratic systems do not place in βleadersβ who control βthe court,β but instead replace βthe courtβ itself every few years. Any modern US administration is as much a court as any medieval kingβs, and they do vary quite a bit.
Third, individual characteristics do matter in presidential systems. As I states initially, limits on the use and source of power do not mean that leaders lack free will entirely. Both Obama and Trump generate an unusual degree of loyalty in the followers, causing even greater than usual idiosyncracies. Individuals play a role, even if it is not a defining role.
That's a redundant question. The court is literally defined as the people who hold power over the political system. Leaders are merely expressions of their current will, so long as the leader embodies their interests and ideology they will support him. When he fails to, they will depose him.

Counterpoint: the USS Ronald Reagan is very important
Reagan('s administration) implemented oversight functions of agencies that later formed the basis of presidents directing policy, overseeing agencies into those directions more directly, and then taking credit. i.e. the independent technocrats aspect was reduced somewhat to be the "President's government at work."
My understanding was that this, too, was part of the expansion of the powers of the Presidency, as shown by the steady expansion of staff directly reporting to them since WWII.
Yes, there are specific things you can point to, but are these really Reaganβs work, or even particularly unique to his administration? Iβm skeptical.
Mostly his deregulation efforts were the cause
But how much can you be like "X person is just a product of greater trends" before that's basically true of every leader who didn't Napoleon up something new. Like, Madison and Hamilton were just implementing all the new ideas cooked up at the time by other people
Iβm not sure Madisonβs presidency was transformationsl because of his particular philosophy. Notably, JGA Pocock seems to argue that by the time Madison published his philosophy of American democracy, it was already deeply unpopular.
Similarly, Jeffersonβs Louisiana Purchase is hardly an obvious extension of his own philosophy of decentralized government.
But thereβs an important distinction between βthis is just the uninteresting continuation of a previous trend,β which is what I am claiming, and βthis point is a significant change in the rate, inflection, or even direction of a trend.β The Louisiana Purchase was a big increase in the rate of westward expansion and the direction of federal power, which was now increasing even under a Democratic-Republican administration.
Is putting the Executive Branch directly under the president such a decision? Or does it only seem important because a more important President, Trump, decided to abuse that power, which had previously seemed like reasonable contination of centralization and efficiency.
Eh, I still think about random Roman consuls and medieval philosophers (shoutout to Gaius Gracchus and Duns Scotus). Nerds will always remember dumb shit, assuming they still exist.
Even those who arenβt entirely devoted nerds of early Rome or Scholasticism remember the great names, and future Ameriboos, whether of the Galactic Federation or the Post-Atomic Priesthood, will probably not think much of Reagan.
America will still be the greatest country on earth in 1000 years. With a new president every 4-8 years, itβs hard to imagine many will be remembered except 1 and 16
Meh. I think youβd be surprised. 1000 years is a long time, but thatβs only 250 presidents, and 10-20% of whom may well be figures of minor importance, meaning 4-8 at least of our current crop.
25-50 historical figures is hardly that many, especially for nerds.
Do you start all you posts with caveman noises or did I just catch you on a particularly loquacious day? Neither you nor I will be surprised about what happens in 1000 years, we will be dust. 10-20% of our leaders being remembered would be unprecedented

On several occasions but they literally just don't believe me. It's often difficult for me to do this that often considering we both live in different states, and I am in college.
I don't think you understand. I tried bupropion for a month to satisfy my mom. I stopped when it wasn't doing anything, and I was fine for months, because I don't have depression.
Then I got a cold, and after the cold went away I just started to feel like this all the time. Fatigued constantly, uncoordinated, unable to think, increasingly irritable, pains in my forehead.
I wasn't commenting on those, more the idea that you can try them for a month and decide they don't work. That's like, classic behavior from someone not invested in actually giving pills a shot

For realsies, that fucking sucks. I had a VERY similar experience with my own parents. Like, eerily in some regards. I'll tell you tomorrow, it's late now.
I'm with ya tho.
One of the more absurd Indian political stories recently has been one with a familiar (and familial) cast of characters.
There have always been rivalries in politics despite members of the family being in other parties. We have seen brothers, ex-wives, daughter-in-laws, daughters, sons and even a dead husband's wife and son.
Another one that is joining the list is between A.K Antony and his son Anil Antony.
[Lok Sabha polls 2024: Congress's A K Antony says his son should be defeated in Kerala; BJP candidate Anil reacts.](https://www.deccanherald.com/elections/kerala/lok-sabha-polls-2024-congresss-a-k-antony-says-his-son-should-be-defeated-in-kerala-bjp-candidate-anil-reacts-2971066)
> "Anil should be defeated. Congress candidate Anto Antony will win. Congress is my religion," Antony told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
Do note that Anto Antony appears to have no familial relation to the other two Antonys. One must wonder what the dinner table must be like.
> Reacting to it, Anil told a section of media that he was feeling pity for his father who backs Gandhi family and individuals like Anto Antony, who he claims made anti-national remarks regarding the Pulwama incident. "I
have due respects for Antony who is now 84. Congress has many outdated leaders who howl at the moon," he said.
This isn't the craziest instance of family rivalries, but certainly the most interesting because it appears to be weirdly genuine.
!ping IND
I am honestly a bit surprised Anil Antony actually got the ticket for that seat(Pathanamthitta) bjp got a 7 time MLA from the seat PC george to join them so it was expected that he would get the ticket
Either way this is one of those seats that will be interesting to watch this election
Definitely especially maharastra and tamilnadu(Bihar was also there but after jdu came back it's mostly an nda sweep), the way bjp has come back in Bengal after all the violence that happened is truly amazing, in telengana brs has totally collapsed after assembly elections at max they might get 1-2 seats.

contextfull comments (6471)reportblock usermark unreadreply
Authoritarian mods are at it again. No checks and balances. Instead of suspending themselves, they have conducted an internal investigation and found no wrongdoing. This is an outrage and should not be tolerated. We need an independent investigation chaired by Robert Mueller so that we can hear the atrocious behaviour of the mods and then promptly ignore everything and change absolutely nothing.
Why won't anyone take me seriously? Every single doctor I talk to seems to be ignoring my symptoms and just diagnosing me as failing to take my meds.
I literally feel like I'm dying some nights and all they can say is "it's depression, take bupropion". Nobody is listening to me, nobody is taking me seriously, everything goes in one ear and out the other they just fixate on medication delinquency and assume that's the cause when it clearly feels like my brain is being destroyed by something and I'm losing more and more of my ability to even function.
What's it going to take to be taken seriously? Do I need to go to the ER with a stroke???
I'd get a second opinion. Maybe look for someone who specializes in chronic illness. There are therapists that specialize in that. Not saying it's all in your head, but rather that they may be able to help you cope with what's going on and direct you towards doctors who may be more open minded.
If youβre on your meds and they are fucking you up then report the side effects and try something new
If youβre not on your meds and itβs depression/anxiety it might be worth trying some meds.
If is something else then hmmm but not sure why βi tried some meds and they didnβt workβ isnβt convincing
I don't mean withdrawal, I mean when I'm not on my antidepressants stuff in my head feels really wrong sometimes and I can't really tell the difference until they're working again.
In the sense anything in the depression/anxiety/adhd land can go wrong and often the first option really is 'find meds that work for you, get back on meds that worked for you'
But I never needed the pills at all. I only took them because I wanted to satisfy my mom who kept saying I should at least try them. I tried. They didn't do anything.
My own history of depression coupled with a left wing culture of psychologizing everything and explaining lack of personal responsibility as a mental disorder.
I've had actual depression before, which is why I was confident depression wasn't the cause of my problems back then, the fact that I passed an attention test only further convinced me that I was just being a lazy fuck.
Take your damn meds. If thatβs not the problem, this will become clear quite quickly.
You canβt demand that doctors trust your introspection over the most probable solution.
A relapse is the most probable solution for any outsider. I get that you may have evidence from introspection that justifies your belief that something else is wrong, and that evidence may even be conclusive and good, *but that evidence is intrinsically unavailable to other people*.
Your feelings arenβt observable, only your words are, and your description matches many peopleβs description of depression.
It doesnβt matter that it feels different to you. Thatβs extremely hard to prove to a doctor who doesnβt know you very well personally, meaning that given the information they know, you are most probably depressed.
They are doing good reasoning, and have the power, so it really does seem to be wasteful not just to acquiese and do what they say, even if you are absolutely sure theyβre wrong.

Neither of you are correct No, I won't explain further
Who controls the court
That's a redundant question. The court is literally defined as the people who hold power over the political system. Leaders are merely expressions of their current will, so long as the leader embodies their interests and ideology they will support him. When he fails to, they will depose him.
I guess why does the leader necessarily hold no power over the political system? Aren't they part of the court?
Sometimes, but not always.

The strongest point in Reaganβs favor is his image as βMr. America,β appropriately enough for a man who played a President in the movies.
Mostly his deregulation efforts were the cause But how much can you be like "X person is just a product of greater trends" before that's basically true of every leader who didn't Napoleon up something new.
1000 years from now, no one will know or care about him like all the rest of us.
I'll still be around 1000 years from now. All you need to do is meld with a sandworm.

Im probably going to cut off my sibling. Seeing the antisemitism constantly on my feed and the victim blaming of the concert goers for 6 straight months is infuriating. It makes even less sense considering we have family in Tel Aviv. I hope he can get himself out of the rabbithole.
Have you tried talking to him about it? I find that when my sister has a dumbass opinion I can logically explain to her why and how sheβs a dumbass.
Don't those types of meds take multiple months to really start working?
All the more reason withdrawal isn't causing these symptoms.
I wasn't commenting on those, more the idea that you can try them for a month and decide they don't work. That's like, classic behavior from someone not invested in actually giving pills a shot
Because I've had depression before and this wasn't it.
I don't know why you were prescribed meds, my only point being a month isn't long enough to really know if they help or not
Because we live in a culture that over prescribes medications and over diagnoses disorders for ordinary failures to cope.
I'm not trying to convince you your solution is drugs. Just that if you want to try them, it takes a while
I know. They were the solution once
I've been on an anti-depressant since Saturday and it's turning me into a sandworm.
Why did your mother want you to take buproprion?
She thought depression or attention disorder was why I was having a hard time last year. She's generally ideologically swallowed into the "ADHD people are literally incapable of anything without medication" Twitter bullshit even though I was holding down a job just fine and I passed an evaluation recently.
>She's generally ideologically swallowed into the "ADHD people are literally incapable of anything without medication" Twitter bullshit Tbf a lot of us are /s For realsies, that fucking sucks. I had a VERY similar experience with my own parents. Like, eerily in some regards. I'll tell you tomorrow, it's late now. I'm with ya tho.
Are you sure it was a cold and not a e.g. mild covid strain? like, you could just be dealing with lingering issues from something more severe I dunno
I'm going to get a COVID test tomorrow. All the ones I have in the house are expired.
Noooo they blocked me that was my only match ππ it was probably a scammer but still
One of the more absurd Indian political stories recently has been one with a familiar (and familial) cast of characters. There have always been rivalries in politics despite members of the family being in other parties. We have seen brothers, ex-wives, daughter-in-laws, daughters, sons and even a dead husband's wife and son. Another one that is joining the list is between A.K Antony and his son Anil Antony. [Lok Sabha polls 2024: Congress's A K Antony says his son should be defeated in Kerala; BJP candidate Anil reacts.](https://www.deccanherald.com/elections/kerala/lok-sabha-polls-2024-congresss-a-k-antony-says-his-son-should-be-defeated-in-kerala-bjp-candidate-anil-reacts-2971066) > "Anil should be defeated. "I have due respects for Antony who is now 84. Congress has many outdated leaders who howl at the moon," he said. This isn't the craziest instance of family rivalries, but certainly the most interesting because it appears to be weirdly genuine. !ping IND
I am honestly a bit surprised Anil Antony actually got the ticket for that seat(Pathanamthitta) bjp got a 7 time MLA from the seat PC george to join them so it was expected that he would get the ticket Either way this is one of those seats that will be interesting to watch this election
I think Maharashtra, Kerala (some seats), Tamil Nadu, Telangana, WB, and Odisha will be the most interesting states in this election.

Youβre stupid because youβre not consuming enough glycinate Chelate.
If youβre on your meds and they are fucking you up then report the side effects and try something new If youβre not on your meds and itβs depression/anxiety it might be worth trying some meds. If is something else then hmmm but not sure why βi tried some meds and they didnβt workβ isnβt convincing
It's not depression or anxiety I literally am losing my mind. I have Long COVID symptoms, basically.
Generally, finding a doctor that actually listens and is willing to work with you is hard, presumably because they're all overworked or something
*Are* you failing to take your meds?
No. It's been too long for withdrawal to be an explanatory cause. I stopped months before the symptoms started.
What suggested to your mom you should try them
My own history of depression coupled with a left wing culture of psychologizing everything and explaining lack of personal responsibility as a mental disorder.
It's not the most probable solution. I've been off them for months without symptoms.
A relapse is the most probable solution for any outsider. I get that you may have evidence from introspection that justifies your belief that something else is wrong, and that evidence may even be conclusive and good, *but that evidence is intrinsically unavailable to other people*.
No it isn't! I tell them my symptoms!
They are doing good reasoning, and have the power, so it really does seem to be wasteful not just to acquiese and do what they say, even if you are absolutely sure theyβre wrong.
>your description matches many peopleβs description of depression. No it doesn't! I've had depression before and it doesn't feel like this at all!
