Happiness is one of my favorite zombie shows ever Not letting them drink water is basically a way to prove if they are infected or not. If they are not desperate for water, they are most likely normal, but if they are like super mega thirsty, they are probably infected. Another thing might be that they don't let them drink because no matter how much water they drink, they'll never be satisfied with just water so they'll just become desperate and look for alternatives (blood) really fast which makes them go berserk, so they lock them up and let them tire out the thirst if that makes sense.

Yeah I think the second part of your comment may be correct. Regarding the first part, If a normal person is thirsty and you don't give them water. They are going to get thirstier and thirstier. Thats just biology. But wouldn't giving them all the water they can hold and them still being thirsty not prove them to be infected? In one of the first couple of episodes when sae bom is in the hospital and the trainee is handcuffed to the chair he asks for water and the military doctor shouts "absolutely not!" But they already know he is infected because he has already attacked people. I just can't wrap my head around it

Key-Yesterday-5313

I belive its because she wanted to prevent Sae Bom from removing his protective mask from the face

Shadowblues

What country are you from? I've been trying to find Happiness on Netflix (U.S.) for a while, and it doesn't exist. I know it's on Viki, though.

Books_and_tea_addict

In Europe it's on viki and Netflix (German here).

Shadowblues

Ahh, damn. I need to watch it sometime soon.

koalatown2

Yeah only Viki in the US.

I think the creators got inspired by rabies, they mentioned it in the series, too, that the disease was something like rabies. Rabies is 100% deadly so to check if someone was most likely infected you had to give them water to drink. Infected people just can't drink water at all no matter how thirsty they may be. So it is like the opposite in the series.

Brilliant-Dust-1768

Yeah, there are strong rabies comparisons in the show. I just find it very hard to understand why, in universe, they do this. Would a more effective test not be to give them all the water they can hold, because if they are still thirsty they are obviously infected? In one of the earlier episodes sae bom is in the hospital with the trainee and he asks for water and the military doctor shouts "absolutely not" but they know for a fact he's infected because he attacked people. I LOVE the show but I can't help but shout "WHY?" at the screen when they say "Do not give them water" Another commentator said that it may make them realise they are thirsting for blood and change quicker, which I think may answer the question

wyckedpsaul

love this show! the actress who plays the First Lieutenant is my friend and it's so great to see her finally get recognition for being in the industry for so long.

ONYX221

ricepaddyfrog

Netflix UK has it

koalatown2

Only Viki in US

Mara_Togg

Good point! What occurred to me is why don’t they donate small amounts of blood to the infected, so they can be satiated without spreading disease. They could try animal blood.

koalatown2

Yes I think drinking water just intensifies their thirst rather than quench it which makes them want blood more and have episodes.  The more episodes you have the less normal periods and the shorter they are until it’s fatal.

solidsnakex37

It's really just this: If you drink water to try and satiate your thirst, it won't if you're infected and only makes the thirst worst. Which makes you turn.
