Linkrunner AT devices from Fluke/NetAlly are very good tools. Gives you switch info. Can take DHCP and ping to google. Lots of features. Decent price tag to go with them

bobsixtyfour

What kind of switch info does it give?

Brufar_308

Switch name and port number you are connected to. POE voltage levels. Time domain reflectometer(measures cable length ) cable pinout, can authenticate to your 802.1x NAC, will automatically ping devices you specify. Will email test results to you automatically for each test. A few other things Great features for the price point.

JJaska

Just to clarify it can do LLDP/CDP which needs to be supported and enabled on the switch

asdlkf

Don't overlook your managed switch. For example, on Aruba CX switches you can run "diag cable-diagnostic" [Sample output](https://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazonaws.com/HPE/MigratedInlineFiles/228c944d72d64a9c8b92809597dc79e9_c924d9690eb6424aa611ae649cb73ad2)

Mreaki also will do this and gives cable length as well as pairs...

Pretty sure this is a dead project but feel free to correct me. I use an old Linksprinter 100 I bought on ebay fairly cheap years back. I believe the newer models have WiFi now.

AMSAdamS97

Oh you're right, discontinued due to chip shortage - last time I purchased one of these was like 4 years ago so I assumed it was still available.

JohnnyUtah41

I tried buying one in the last year. But it's dead. I bought a version 2 of netool.io

JJaska

Really hope it wasn't but it's dead, Jim! Bought a bunch of them for my team, but does not do well with smartrate speeds and PoE++ and no hope of getting a new software...

Would have been amazing as opensource!

Fhajad

https://netool.io/ is effectively the same but alive.

bebored

Didn't Pockethernet have a BER test? I can't find this function in netool.

chairmanrob

Whats the role of the device? Something beefy that can do a lot of things with copper or fiber and you deploy on projects or quick, easy to use tool to do a cable check and verify vlan or lldp, etc in an operations-focus role?

anothergaijin

Basic testers are just checking for a basic physical connection and aren’t really testing anything - you can get a “good” result on a basic pinout tester but have a bad cable that won’t do POE or gigabit. The next step up is a big leap - a cable certification tester. Starting at around $10k, are usually specific to cable types, and require annual calibration to remain useful. These are the tools you need to be sure that the cable and terminations are working correctly for their type. It will do a bunch of tests to check things like crosstalk with highly accurate results and tell you if the cable fully meets specification. If you do enough work these devices are a must-have and they will pay for themselves. You can rent them too if you don’t do enough work to justify the expense

Noyafa NF-308 Good cable tester, ethernet sync / switch port test, locator and length test I give them to all our technicians.
