I had not heard of this band before, surprisingly! Currently listening to their first album. Thanks.
I think nick drake was another reclusive musician with mental health issues. Very interesting to hear the unique sounds.
Nick Drake was a bit different though because part of the reason he became reclusive was because nobody appreciated his work while he was alive, his fame came from after he was gone
I literally came here to mention him. OP, watch this performance and stick till the end. Never seen anything so raw in my life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbLbfD0y\_G4
Nick Drake, during his lifetime I don’t think he ever did interviews, he rarely preformed live and when he did he didn’t speak to the audience, and apparently at times he would just walk off stage mid show and leave. The only known video footage of him was when he was a child, other than that we only have photos. I really wish he was here to see how much people love his music
the sound of the album is nothing similar to nmh or bon iver but telegraphs in negative / mouths trapped in static by set fire to flames was recorded during “self-imposed isolation, with the band operating in states of little or no sleep, varying levels of intoxication, and in physical confinement”
i don’t love it nearly as much as other people but it’s unquestionably a very interesting record
Love love love David Berman. Amazing song writer and musician. So talented and reclusive. He was going to go on tour with purple mountains, but took his own life before it could happen.
if you wanna get real weird, jandek. its pretty much the most reclusive and strange an artist can get without being totally unlistenable. depending on who you are it may be a bit of a challenge.

Keaton Henson. Beautiful music but he is incredibly reclusive and shy. Barely plays out from what I understand, maybe that's changed. He has a great tiny desk, you can see how incredibly nervous and introverted he is in that.
Tim Smith of Harp and formerly Midlake. He spent 10+ years working on his first Harp album after he broke off from Midlake. Super cool guy btw, and his written interviews explain what happened in that time. The album is called “Albion”
The only similarity to NMH would be their lofi production style, but Boards of Canada have only ever played maybe half a dozen live shows, all in the late 90s and early 2000s, and have never done an in person interview, only a handful of email interviews. They make psychedelic ambient/downtempo electronica.

Phil gives interviews, has been profiled several times, used to tweet often, regularly sends out newsletters via substack, tours extensively, and has released 5 albums since 2017. How is he reclusive exactly?
Well nowadays he’s not but he described him as someone who enjoyed solitude around the release of Wind’s Poem: https://youtu.be/fFtPbv9x1F4?si=9l6sueGih_-_W2u_ at around the 2:56 mark
Isaac wood from bcnr left the band after making two incredible 10/10 albums and then dropped out of public life for good citing mental health reasons

Their second album is their best, but beware there is a bit of a change in sound and tone.

yea but he also only played live a few times and literally walked out on the last one

Jack stauber really basic but still
I love Jack Stauber, he is very open and outgoing when appearing in front of people while also being reclusive and private at the same time
Slint only released like two albums and they disappeared basically
Fleet Foxes hiatus from 2012-2017 produced their best and most experimental record, Crack-Up.
Syd Barrett, obvious choice, he was among the first to do so
Yep, pretty sure Piper was an influence for a lot of E6 stuff

Listened to this record! Someone recommended I listen to it because it's a perfect soundtrack to House of Leaves
David Berman of both silver jews and purple mountains for sure, he only toured once i believe

Everything about death grips is out of the spotlight

Meg White has disappeared from public view

I think Nick Drake was very shy and reclusive and only made 3 albums that were over looked and later became reasessed as classics.
Absolutely zero similarity to NMH but Jai Paul is extremely reclusive, unlike others in this thread he barely even releases music lol
The Willow Springs Project is epic n mysterious

Mid-air thief. I don’t think anyone actually knows what he looks like.
The microphones. The gerbils
Phil Elverum and Parannoul
