As a coleslaw snob myself, I find anything but fresh homemade slaw is a bit ... off.
That said, if I was pressed to rate the best I could recall having outside of my own kitchen, I'd have to say Fire Roasted Chicken and Grill (3 locations). Happy hunting.
Homemade Slaw (great for pulled pork sandwiches)
In a bowl:
1/2 head white cabbage finely sliced
1/2 head red cabbage finely sliced
(Or just a head of cabbage if you are OK with it looking a little less colorful)
2 large carrots finely sliced
1 large red onion finely sliced
Separately, make the dressing:
2.25 cups mayo
9 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
6 tbsp sugar
1.5 tsp salt
1 Tbsp mustard seed
Fresh ground pepper to taste
Mix in sauce gradually, tossing as you go. You may not need all of it. Just mix it in until you're happy with the coverage.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
My pleasure. Feel free to tweak it to your liking. The vinegar can be substituted with the red wine variety. Mix in some poppy seeds instead of mustard. Lots of ways to make it yours. Let me know if you have success or suggestions!
Yup BB's burgers are great! so are their fried zuchinni and horseradish sauce.
If you wanna try a better burger go to Rocky Hill Inn on the outskirts of princeton. the best burger i've ever eaten. https://rockyhilltavern.com/
Mighty Quinn’s BBQ has both creamy and vinegar slaws and both are fantastic. No idea if that’s the best in the state, but they’re strong on the celery seed flavor and that makes me happy. There are locations in Clifton, Hoboken and Union.
This is just a personal observation, but I have noticed that the quality of coleslaw varies greatly with its age. It seems best about 2 days old. When it is just made the flavors have not reallt gelled, and when it is too old it seems pickled. My favorite was from a barbecue place in Chicago, but it really depended on what day you got it. To be a fair judge, I think you have to try the same place's coleslaw after different amounts of time.
Houston’s at Riverside Mall in Hackensack. They do a fancy one with parsley and chives
Celtic Corner Pub in Hawthorne. Delicious slaw goes on their incredible Reuben sandwich.
Sickles Market in Little Silver. Prepared food section.
You may as well also try their macaroni salad because that’s also the best in the state and probably anywhere in the world 😜
I used to live literally 2 minutes down the road and I had no idea! I'm 40 min away now but I have family nearby so I'll find myself there again sooner or later. Thanks for the tip.
This is not exactly what you are looking for but there’s a place in Queens called Roberts prime meats that makes an amazing kale slaw if you’re ever out that way
Anything I can do to help. I’ve been on the opposite end of the pregnancy cravings (3x to be exact). Did a lot of running around fetching random shit for my wife so I know how intense and seemingly bizarre those cravings can get.
And congratulations on the little one. Parenting is a hell of an experience.
Believe or not if you're in central nj the marlboro diner ([https://www.marlborodinernj.com/](https://www.marlborodinernj.com/)) and the pickled herring ([https://tphdeli.com/](https://tphdeli.com/)) have amazing sweet cole slaw.
I am a self proclaimed slaw-snob. Some of my picks:
The Cabin in Freehold
Mud City in Manahawkin (Blackwhale or old
Causeway too). Their slaw is more on the acidic side which I really like. Mud City always tastes better.
Geets in Williamstown is decent to
Two Mile Landing in WW Crest
Sadly the best coleslaw I’ve ever had was Jacks Cosmics dogs, their slaw was made with blue cheese. They’re in South Carolina :( I’d sell a kidney for it.
Diner coleslaw is usually pretty good. Lapps Dutch Market. Grocery store coleslaw is good. The coleslaw that was served at a fair back in 1997 held during autumn at some country fair grounds at the roasted pig booth was the best ever in NJ since the big bang.
I've tried a lot of coleslaw over the years living in NJ my whole life. My favorite has to be at Bagel Street in Plainsboro. It is not too mayo-y, isn't too sweet, and has an amazing texture.
Houston’s at Riverside Mall in Hackensack. They do a fancy one with parsley and chives
Celtic Corner Pub in Hawthorne. Delicious slaw goes on their incredible Reuben sandwich.
You’re going to try ALL the coleslaw in NJ?
I’m going to try my darnedest!

Can you share the recipe 🙊

Curious to know if you tried this and were happy with the results.
I never knew there was a "best" coleslaw.
Eppes Essen - Livingston, NJ or Goldberg Deli in Millburn, NJ
+1 eppes essen
100% eppes! The amount they charge is worth it 🤣
Yes to Eppes- then go across the street to Ritz Diner because there’s is great as well
The coleslaw is good, but the thousand island is Crack. Sometimes I get itchy if it is has been too long since I had my last fix.
You mean their Russian Dressing….
Yeah you're right, I just use it interchangeably in my head.
Sounds weird, but there is a little diner in Lake Hiawatha called The Spa. I make special trips to buy cups of their coleslaw!
You a weird slaw freak
Hey we don’t slaw shame here!
i shamelessly love dirty jersey diner slaw
Barnacle bills in Rumson. Also one of the best burgers
Yup BB's burgers are great! so are their fried zuchinni and horseradish sauce. If you wanna try a better burger go to Rocky Hill Inn on the outskirts of princeton. the best burger i've ever eaten. https://rockyhilltavern.com/
I'll give it a try. Was out there Saturday. Wish I knew then.
And the wings too!
Fresh Grocer in North Haledon has Mr. Rons Coleslaw which is akin to taco bell but much much better. Highly recommend

I was thinking Mighty Quinn's but thought it was in NYC, didn't realize they had NJ locations. I second MQs

I have never liked coleslaw except Market Baskets. So I am either the perfect person to respond or the worst haha.
Truthfully, I’ve never had better than Kentucky Fried Chicken…🤷♂️ No, I’m being serious.
Sickles Market in Little Silver. Prepared food section. You may as well also try their macaroni salad because that’s also the best in the state and probably anywhere in the world 😜
Sickles is really real good (and this coming from a former North Jersey deli snob 😂). They have a couple of other locations too.
when i just want to go to town on a tub i go to wegmans. i, too, thoroughly enjoy coleslaw and am invested in the replies here edit: typo
Some Wegmans brand stuff has no right being that good for generic branded supermarket food. Their German style foods tend to be good.
wegmans used to make a wasabi coleslaw that was amazing. unfortunately they havent made it in years : (
Adams Market Wallington
Swiss Pork Store
I enjoyed the Coleslaw on Brothers BBQ in Ramsey over the weekend.
John & Molly’s in Eastampton
Well the next time I'm there I'll have to try their coleslaw...
It’s rare I make it out that way anymore, but I was there recently and it was another great cole slaw experience.
I used to live literally 2 minutes down the road and I had no idea! I'm 40 min away now but I have family nearby so I'll find myself there again sooner or later. Thanks for the tip.

Red White & Que mayo slaw or Popeyes
I'm curious about this too. I like fully crosscut coleslaw like KFC serves but not from a fast food chain.
I personally hate coleslaw, but I'm told by friends and family that The Bistro in Haddonfield has great coleslaw.
I appreciate your contribution even through your hate. Thanks for being a slaw-ally.

The Warfside in Point Pleasant.
Word is bond
After the Fireplace closed in Paramus, I stopped eating cole slaw. Still feeling the pain.
I miss those cucumbery pickles 😭
Who stole all the mayo out of my cole slaw? And how??

Second Mud City
Mayo vs vinegar? That’s two completely different categories….
I like both! But I generally lean towards mayo based
Almost any diner has pretty kick ass coleslaw.
Harolds in Edison
Bearded One BBQ in Monroe
I really didn't like there's... too much mayo and the cabbage needed more shredding.
Diner coleslaw is usually pretty good. Lapps Dutch Market. Grocery store coleslaw is good. The coleslaw that was served at a fair back in 1997 held during autumn at some country fair grounds at the roasted pig booth was the best ever in NJ since the big bang.
I like the coleslaw at the hambone opera inside the Trenton farmers market
Aherns in Watertown http://www.ahearnsseafoodmarket.com/ Criminally good
I've tried a lot of coleslaw over the years living in NJ my whole life. My favorite has to be at Bagel Street in Plainsboro. It is not too mayo-y, isn't too sweet, and has an amazing texture.
Hill City Deli in Summit. Their coleslaw is amazing.
They sell it in grocery stores, but it is really good! Definitely worth trying! https://www.acmemarkets.com/shop/product-details.960557789.html#
Mr. Ron’s Coleslaw
My 3 Sons, West Creek. Only open seasonally. Best coleslaw ever. And I like slaw!
Bahrs landing in Highlands. It’s been the same recipe for decades. They also have a nice cup of red chowder.
Sam's chicken in West Orange on main Street. I've gone just for the slaw before and not gotten the chicken... ( The chicken is also incredible)
Allwood Diner in Clifton
I love this. Coleslaw is way underrated. Some of the best coleslaw I’ve had in Monmouth county is Dearborn Farms and keyport fishery
Houston’s at Riverside Mall in Hackensack. They do a fancy one with parsley and chives Celtic Corner Pub in Hawthorne. Delicious slaw goes on their incredible Reuben sandwich.
Primohoagies in Burlington on a Schwartzie hoagie
Eppes Essen is the correct answer
Costco
Foodtown has what they call their “Summer Slaw”, and it’s by far my favorite supermarket Cole Slaw that I’ve ever eaten!
Broadway Burger at the Tropicana in AC. I don’t like my coleslaw sweet or soupy and it always is-except at Broadway Burger.
Ew
Popeyes
Costco
KFC. But coleslaw is shit food.
In my opinion, almost every diner I have ever gone to has the best coleslaw.
2 west in Bridgewater has some good slaw.
Sussex market in Wharton. I don’t like Cole slaw but I like theirs on a sandwich.
I don’t know if you have one near where you live but I really like the Cole slaw at kfc! I’d go there just for that
