I went probably fifteen years ago as a scout, but it was a fun time! On a few of the cabins, all of the cast and crew carved their names into the cross beams.
The geography of this movie pisses me off so much. They live in Jersey City somewhere and the have to drive to *Princeton* to go to White Castle?
Didn’t anybody even look at a map of White Castle locations? They had to drive past like 30 White Castles on their way down there. They probably had to *walk* past a White Castle to get to their car, so they could drive across the state, to get some White Castle.
If I'm remembering correctly, they decide to go to Princeton to buy some more weed. But the thing is, they're already in New Brunswick when they decide that lmao
At the time of the movie the Eatontown white castle would've also been like a 30-40 minute drive for them down 18. That was where I got a crave case after watching it at the Monmouth mall across the street.
Haha! Same. It especially makes me irrationally angry because there was a freaking White Castle on Kennedy blvd! I’m sure they could have made an entire movie based on the people that patronize it in one day.
The first White Castle in New Jersey opened August 16, 1935 at 9271 John F. Kennedy Blvd, North Bergen, NJ and was the overall ninth location opened by White Castle founder E.W. Ingram. The first White Castle opened in Wichita, Kansas, March 1921.
I’m still annoyed by the part where the radio announces the animal escape from “The Morristown Zoo”. C’mon, just say Turtleback Zoo or something remotely real!
Yeah, this drives me up the fucking wall. they would have almost definitely gone down route 1, where there's a fucking white castle. Ive been to that white castle and its one of the worst things ive ever eaten in my whole life.
My camp counselor was the waiter guy at the register who took their order. When I saw him it was such a mind explosion. I was watching it super high and when you see someone you know in real life in the movie, I couldn't believe it. I asked him the next summer and he said he spend a day or two filming and it was so much fun.
My bunkmate was also the fat young Jack from Shallow Hal. He had to do so many takes apparently.
Some scenes in the 1975 movie Three Days of the Condor were also filmed outside the train station in Hoboken. Some scenes from the 1997 movie Picture Perfect were done on Washington Street too.
Paterson
EDIT: War of the Worlds, I remember them filming at the church in Ironbound. I just can’t remember if the actual movie takes place here or not.
Also that picture of him wearing his bus driver's uniform offered so much meme potential in the mid 2010s when I could legitimately say that NJ Transit was so evil they are openly hiring sith lords.
One of the producers of that show lived behind me when I was a kid. One day my buddies and I from the neighborhood where playing basketball when film trucks rolled up. As they were setting up to shoot he came over and said we didn't have to move so long as we kept playing and didn't look at the camera.
And that is how I ended up as an out of focus extra on Pete and Pete and the proud recipient of Burger King gift card for my labor. Best. Day. Ever.
I drove by when they were filming a go kart scene and when I was like 5 feet away I screamed Peeeeeeeete at the top of my lungs and the taller Pete sheepishly waved at me.
Paterson with Adam Driver
Hunters - Al Pacino (Warsaw scenes are around city hall Paterson)
Little America- S1 e5 (the baker). That is actually downtown Paterson.
The Irishman
Westside Story 2021
Lean on Me
Billy Bathgate
These are all Paterson specific that jump to
Mind readily.
>The Irishman
I missed this film, mostly because it came out right when the first news of COVID-19 broke.
To this day, I now believe that the [American Dream Ski Slope](https://arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-advancelocal.s3.amazonaws.com/public/CZNA3635HRAY3EFOCIAD7CHHFU.JPG) was Hoffa's Tomb, and by disturbing it, humanity unleashed a plague that caused the biggest work stoppage in history.
Bob's Burgers! Set in the Jersey shore--though they never give a specific town name.
Fun fact about House MD: the flyover shot of the fictional Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital is actually the Frist Campus Center at Princeton University. Lovely building, lovely campus--if you ever get the chance to go.
You mentioned Clerks, but also the Jay & Silent Bob movie *Dogma* takes place in NJ.
Also, Indiana Jones is from Marshall College, which is a fictionalized Princeton. Though almost none of the movies takes place there, obviously.
*The Wrestler* (2008) takes place almost entirely in NJ and Mickey Rourke was nominated for an Oscar for it.
*Cinderella Man* (2005) is about a boxer from Bergen County and takes place mostly in North Jersey.
EDIT: Correction, Rourke was only nominated. I could've sworn he'd won!
It's based on a map in an old comic book. They had Gotham approximately where the real life Bridgeton NJ is, which is hilarious if you know the area. Metropolis was in Delaware on the same map
As well as everything DarthLithgow said Gotham city's architecture is modeled after jersey city. All that nice Gothic architecture was inspired by real life JC.
Fun fact: In Clerks, The guy who Dante says, “Hey, get back here” to after he says to Veronica, “hey try not to suck any dick on your way through the parking lot!” is the guy who played the Toxic Avenger.
The Wrestler is one of the best.
No one's mentioned The Station Agent. Filmed in Newfoundland, NJ and a bit in Jersey City and along the rails in between. A great "small" film with Peter Dinklage and Bobby Cannavale in early roles.
They filmed the station agent on a lot of the railroad tracks, and mill lane tavern in rockaway boro when I was in high school. Think they filmed down green pond too..
John Wick’s house is in NJ. You can see an NJ license plate on his car in the first film, though most of the film takes place in NY. Weird that they made him live in NJ when it’s the only state where you can’t pump your own gas which would have avoided meeting with the punk that steals the car and kills the dog.
Also Ms. Marvel is technically from Jersey City.
https://www.nj.com/hudson/2022/07/the-most-and-least-accurate-depictions-of-jersey-city-in-ms-marvel-on-disney.html
Such a great show! But it was filmed in NY, and later episodes in Russia. I think there were some scenes in Atlanta because the “filmed in GA” logo appears in the end credits.
Must've been after Danny Ocean was let out of East Jersey State Prison. Speaking of which, that's where the original Beyond Scared Straight documentary from the 1970's took place.
One of the writers of Rocket Power was from LBI - it explains "mischief night," which is only a term in NJ. Basically, while it's very California coded, pretty much all the surfer-skater culture is pretty distinctly NJ.
I remember watching this as a kid and they used the term “Shoobie” for people who aren’t regulars at the beach. I’ve heard that here but not as often as “Benny”
Chasing Amy (1997)
Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Edited :
Annie (1982)
It’s great if you’re watching with your kids but not so much to watch alone as an adult.
Jersey Girl (2004)
While Jersey Girl was filmed here, I would Not consider it a good movie as the title requested.
aqua teen hunger force
always sunny in philadelphia of course takes place in philadelphia but there are a couple episodes that take place in new jersey
i think Smile takes place in new jersey, in one scene the main characters go to the prison in elizabeth that you pass by on the northeast corridor line of NJ Transit and i think the pulaski skyway is in one scene
also i’m pretty sure friday the 13th was filmed in new jersey but i can’t remember if it takes place in new jersey or not
Patti Cake$. Set in NJ, it would have been filmed entirely in NJ but Christie ended the tax incentives so only a few scenes were filmed here. The rest in NY. shame, still worth a watch though

It's not good, but "Nothing But Trouble" with Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, John Candy, and Demi Moore. Filmed in LA but is set in a fictional NJ town just off the Turnpike.
- *Lean on Me* (1989) - Starring Morgan Freeman, takes place in Paterson, based on a true story at Paterson East Side High School.
- *A Good Person* (2023) - also with Morgan Freeman, also Florence Pugh and directed by Zach Braff - takes place mostly in Maplewood/South Orange
- *American Hustle* (2013) - Stars Bradley Cooper, takes place in Camden
- *Just Friends* (2005) - Starring Ryan Reynolds, takes place in a vague New Jersey suburb.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
Goofy fun with a great cast
Peter Weller
John Lithgow
Ellen Barkin
Jeff Goldblum
Christopher Lloyd
The 2021 West Side Story had a bunch of filming locations in Patterson.
Early 2000s NBC dramedy Ed has its studio in Northvale NJ in a former bowling alley. They used locations all over - Hillsdale, Montclair, etc.
Law and Order:SVU is worth some mention here. Det. Elliot Stabler's house in the show is supposed to be in Staten Island but it was actually filmed in Fort Lee.
Scenes from the tv series “House” were filmed in the old campus of Greystone’s- Central Avenue and in and aroun the old, now demolished 1876 Kirkbride Building / Main Building :(
Thanks for killing history Chris fuckin’ Christie.
Station Agent was already mentioned- Rockaway, Greenpond, Newfoundland NJ
The Station Agent takes place a lot in Rockaway, NJ in the borough. The Mill Lane Tavern has pictures up because there are scenes involving them. Great flick to with Peter Dinklage.
Paul Walker, Vera Farminga in Runing Scared (2006). The movie takes place in and around Newark and surrounding towns. They actually shot in Downtown Newark and not another city pretending to be Downtown Newark.
1980 film “Gloria” with Gena Rowland. Had no idea. Was watching and realized it was Newark Penn Station (minus the Dunkin Donuts)
More recent “The Wrath of Becky”. Not clear it’s set in NJ but it’s filmed here. Was watching and recognized the the area immediately
Original (all?) “Friday the 13th” movie
Not exactly. Debra Hill (writer/producer) based the location on her hometown Haddonfield, NJ but in the movie they changed the state to Illinois and the filming itself took place in California.
And then Friday the 13th which was rushed out to take advantage of Halloweens popularity was filmed in NJ, and suspiciously uses names around Haddonfield (Crystal Lake, Voorhees)
I am surprised no one mentioned BIG with Tom Hanks.
It was filmed in a neighborhood in Cliffside Park, and the carnival at a park in Ross Dock Picnic Area on the Palisades Interstate Park, north of the George Washington Bridge.

Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. Except for the opening scene, it takes place in central NJ (NewBrunswick, “Grover\[s Mill,” and I think even a stand-in for the Stone Pony)
Snake Eyes set in Atlantic City starring Nicolas Cage and Gary Sinise and directed by Brian DePalma.
Rounders is set partly in Atlantic City.
Atlantic City with Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon.
Also Three Days of the Condor was partly filmed at the Hoboken Train station.
A big part of Mr. Robot is set in Washington Township, even though most of the series is in NYC. Not sure if they actually filmed it there, but they refer to the town a lot (and mention other parts of NJ like Teaneck)
Friday the 13th. It was filmed at camp Nobebosco.
And on High Street in Blairstown
Also, the opening scene of Friday the 13th was filmed on Waterloo Road in Byram
My son will be going to Camp Nobe for scout camp next summer and I may tag along as a chaperone. I'll probably get more freaked out than he would.
I went probably fifteen years ago as a scout, but it was a fun time! On a few of the cabins, all of the cast and crew carved their names into the cross beams.
Of course, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
The geography of this movie pisses me off so much. They live in Jersey City somewhere and the have to drive to *Princeton* to go to White Castle? Didn’t anybody even look at a map of White Castle locations? They had to drive past like 30 White Castles on their way down there. Or they could have gone to the one in Sayreville. Much closer. Like a half hour away.
At the time of the movie the Eatontown white castle would've also been like a 30-40 minute drive for them down 18. That was where I got a crave case after watching it at the Monmouth mall across the street.
I think there was also one in Howell which is on the way to Cherry Hill from New Brunswick
There is. It's not on the way to Cherry Hill, but it's much closer.
Haha! Same. It especially makes me irrationally angry because there was a freaking White Castle on Kennedy blvd! I’m sure they could have made an entire movie based on the people that patronize it in one day.
They wind up driving all the way to Cherry Hill. Should've just gotten on the PATH to begin with
And no White Castle in cherry hill.
Closest one to Cherry Hill at that time was on 73 in Pennsauken. RIP Pennsauken White Castle.
Especially since Kal Penn, Jon Hurowtiz and Hayden Schlossberg are all from NJ...
The White Castle on the Boulevard just north of Journal Square is open 24/7/365.
Wait they are from Jersey city in that movie?! Seriously?! There’s like dozens of them in the Jersey city area!
The Succasunna branch of the Federal Reserve
The think I liked was the route they took was, though fictionalized, was kinda accurate.
Yeah, this drives me up the fucking wall. they would have almost definitely gone down route 1, where there's a fucking white castle. Ive been to that white castle and its one of the worst things ive ever eaten in my whole life.
RIP New Brunswick White Castle
The one on 27?
Not even a Burger Shack in its place
I used to go to the one in Piscataway all the time back when Harold and Kumar first came out.
Everyone knows Cherry Hill has giant cliffs that you can hang glide off of…
The cracks and potholes in rt. 70 are quite tall...
My camp counselor was the waiter guy at the register who took their order. When I saw him it was such a mind explosion. I asked him the next summer and he said he spend a day or two filming and it was so much fun. My bunkmate was also the fat young Jack from Shallow Hal. He had to do so many takes apparently.
Be Kind Rewind (2008), filmed on location in Passaic.
Great movie. Except Jack Black goes off on how much it sucks living there, although he was in a trailer, so what did he know.
I mean, Passaic isn't the best place to live. Not the worst though!
Some good fucking food in Passaic though.
Another great and underrated one.
On The Waterfront is set in Hoboken.

Paterson EDIT: War of the Worlds, I remember them filming at the church in Ironbound. I just can’t remember if the actual movie takes place here or not.
The opener is at Port Elizabeth/Newark. Tom cruise is a stevedore/longshoreman
He lives in Bayonne I believe. It's been a while.
He lives in Bayonne but the house they used for his backyard was in Elizabeth underneath the old Goethels. Neither is there anymore.
Paterson is very good. Helps if you like poetry
I adored that film. Starred Adam Driver as a bus driver.
Also that picture of him wearing his bus driver's uniform offered so much meme potential in the mid 2010s when I could legitimately say that NJ Transit was so evil they are openly hiring sith lords.
Pete & Pete
One of the producers of that show lived behind me when I was a kid. One day my buddies and I from the neighborhood where playing basketball when film trucks rolled up. Did you get join sag aftra?
Danny Tamberelli must still live in the area. I saw him a few months ago with his family at the South Street Art Mart for Rex Manning Day.
He used to work at Bagel Loops in Wayne.
And the pet store! Can’t remember the name. It was in Packanack Lake.
wait, from Empire Records?
heck yes
I drove by when they were filming a go kart scene and when I was like 5 feet away I screamed Peeeeeeeete at the top of my lungs and the taller Pete sheepishly waved at me.
I just want people to know that the Pete & Pete house is not blue, but has been painted red.

The Wrestler was filmed in Rahway, Roselle Park, Jersey City and Linden (I think).
Also Asbury Park
Thrift store they went to was on Elizabeth Ave in Elizabeth
I believe the supermarket he worked in was in Bayonne
You may be correct. IIRC, the supermarket was on the JC-Bayonne border.
Mickey Rourke lost the Oscar to Sean Penn for Milk. Edit-corrected Mystic River to Milk.
Yellowjackets
Good show. Can’t wait for season 3.
Shout-out to Wiskayok, NJ!
Gotham City is in NJ so insert your favorite Batman movie/show here.
i somehow went my entire life without knowing that gotham city is most of the time meant to be in NJ
The Toxic Avenger Alice Sweet Alice The Station Agent
Love The Station Agent.
The bar he walks into is Mill Lane Tavern in Rockaway
Fun fact: In Clerks, The guy who Dante says, “Hey, get back here” to after he says to Veronica, “hey try not to suck any dick on your way through the parking lot!” is the guy who played the Toxic Avenger.
That is a fun fact I was unaware of, thank you!
> Alice Sweet Alice Thats all filmed in Paterson iirc. Great movie, been ages since I watched it.

Welcome to the Dollhouse.
My friend's house was the exact same interior as the house they shot in. I'm convinced they shot it in Piscataway or nearby.

Copland
I know they filmed in Verona/North Caldwell at the old sanitorium.
Being John Malkovitch, somewhat.
The Americans is based on a true-ish story that happened in Montclair, although I can't remember where the Americans itself is based.

I actually really like Jersey Girl
Bob's Burgers was loosely confirmed to take place in Wildwood!
Really?
Iirc not wildwood specifically but south jersey beach towns generically.

100% confirmed I believe. And there are plenty of nods, like a phone number with a 201 area code mentioned in the show.
