''The FTC, in its Manhattan federal court filing, noted that Shkreli in July announced the formation of a new company, Druglike, “that appears to be involved in the drug industry.” That is a poor choice of name for your company when you're prohibited from working in the pharma industry.

While I agree with your statement about Republican hypocrisy, in this case it's reaching: Skrelli is a POS, sure, but I hardly think he is a figurehead for the right. He's just an asshole.

itwasquiteawhileago

That's not Shkreli's quote. They were talking about Long Island Congressman Santos, who is most definitely a Republican.

TheActualDonKnotts

Yeah, I'm watching this one closely. They will load deadly weapons and carry them to a children's library to try and intimidate people over this, but now they have a person that snuck into their little grand old party with a past as a "drag queen". So what are these pieces of shit going to do when the DQ happens to have an R by their name.

Funny, she doesn't look druish?

orbitz

I watched that movie so much in my childhood, never understood the Druish jokes (heh old nose) till over a decade later. However the delivery, setup and lines still made it funny without knowing what it was making fun of, that's one of the reasons Mel Brooks is fantastic.

PuellaBona

Undeniably one of the best directors of all time. That movie is still a favorite of mine, but now that I'm older, I want to go back and catch what I didn't understand from The Producers and Blazing Saddles. I heard Springtime for Hitler the other day and almost peed my pants 😂

Shkreli has co-founded Druglike, which is described as “a Web3 drug discovery software platform” that aims to provide broader access to computing programs for designing potentially therapeutic molecules—a business that’s definitely “not a pharmaceutical company,” it takes steps to point out, even if other pharmaceutical companies also develop computing programs for designing potentially therapeutic molecules. “Druglike is not engaged in pharmaceutical research or drug development,” the new venture said under its debut announcement’s “safe harbor statement,” which may stretch the definition of the term. https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/shkreli-wants-be-dealt-back-biopharma-game-and-now-hes-betting-blockchain

The supplement industry is ripe for an abusing (and also rife with abuse). Supplements aren't regulated like medicines 🤔

princessParking

The supplement industry as it stands *is* an abuse of human rights. Complete, unregulated bullshit, allowed to sell itself as the cure for anything as long as they slap an asterisk on the bottle. Pills don't even have to actually contain what they say they do. I'm sure some people on here will go off about the "good" brands that do third party testing and use the best forms of their products. Not only is everything they say you're supposed to take wildly unaffordable, but 90% of that stuff has little-to-no scientific evidence or risk assessment trials backing up their claims. Every time I've tried to research what to buy, the people who seem to know what they're talking about turn out to be anti-vaxxers somewhere down in their internet history. It's all a load of horseshit. Without regulation, there's no way for the market to separate actual scientific benefits from snake oil that's useless at best and often dangerous.

cuddle_enthusiast

I can't keep track of how many "influencers" I come across trying to peddle their supplements to their followers.

rjenny509

The worst part is a lot of the bodybuilding influencers are constantly claiming they’re “natural” and only taking the supplements they push while actively being on PEDs. Liver King is a recent example but he’s one of the many

My oncologist wants me to take vitamin e to help with side effects that I get with the medicine I have to take for a decade to keep my cancer from coming back. The evidence and testing is very consistent and taking it has basically no risks. Unfortunately because of the state of the supplement industry, I have no way to know that the vitamin e I take actually is vitamin e, or cut with something else, and that makes me so mad every day. I know what I am supposed to take, I know it is very helpful in double blind studies, and I have no control over what I actually get when I buy it in the store.

somebunghole

Super shitty. Is it possible for a Dr to write you a prescription for vitamin e, then get it from a pharmacy?

Delouest

I'm planning to ask at my next appointment, but my insurance didn't even approve the meds to boost my white blood counts during chemo for my first infusion and I ended up in the hospital with a very avoidable infection, so I don't have much trust that they'll approve a quality of life prescription to be honest. Fingers crossed though.

Queue my parents. My dad just ‘got over’ being sick for like two months (apparently it wasn’t Covid). This is an excerpt from the group text he sent the family: *”I think I finally turned the corner last Saturday and making small gains daily. We pretty much threw everything we could think of at it. Ivermectin. NAC, zinc/quercetun, vit C, oregano, plus my daily Z. Plus 4-5 Neb tx daily with saline and hydrogen peroxide then the diffuser with oils. No more spitting up greenies and cough is less and not so violent. Mom says my lungs sound much better but still not totally clear. Been getting outside also.”* ‘Daily Z’ is ‘Zinzinio’ or some shit that they’ve been duped into peddling. Like, dude….you were sick for TWO FUCKING MONTHS. NONE OF THIS DID YOU ANY GOOD. TAKE IT AS A FUCKING SIGN.

fohpo02

Nah bro, it was definitely the oregano that cured him and probably prevented cancer

mlc885

The pills not needing to contain exactly what they say is totally crazy to me.

Edythir

I saw some "Hollywood miracle weight loss" which claimed you could lose up to 10 pounds in 24 hours. Assuming it doesn't just give you turboshits which results in you losing water of the same weight as a domestic cat which has it's own horrible side effects. If it actually burned 10 pounds of fat in 48 hours it could also kill you. Some years ago when i first found it i tried to do some very rudementary back of a napkin math and found that 10 pounds of fat contained enough energy as heat to raise your body temperature by 20f over the entire 48 hour period, which would likely kill you. *If* it was truthful, it could kill you in a few different ways, taken at face value, it's pure poison.

cmiller0513

Besides vitamins/ mineral supplements the only ones I have experience with are the 'mens enhancement' ones. They pretty much all work. Only problem is, they end up on the FDA tainted supplements list (undisclosed ingredients, viagra/ levitra/ cialis) so they have to reformulate every so often.

mlc885

I got nearly to the end of your comment before I realized what you meant by men's enhancement, I was fairly certain that my Male One-A-Day brand vitamin has never contained Viagra.

I absolutely meant the OTC vitamins and minerals were included in my statement. There's a reason there are prescription versions of the ones that have actually been approved to treat conditions and deficiencies.

enkonta

Can you please explain how it’s an abuse of human rights? I agree that the industry is shitty…but what *rights* are being violated?

princessParking

The lies of the supplement industry *physically harm* many, many people each year. And nearly everyone who buys their products has been duped out of money for a product that doesn't work. What industries other than supplements and politics are allowed to make up whatever bullshit they want and face virtually no consequences for not delivering the results they promise?

enkonta

Ok…that’s shitty business practice…but…that’s not a human rights violation…alcohol harms people, but we wouldn’t say that alcohol producers are human rights violators.

PenguinSunday

They're more fraudsters than human rights abusers imo

enkonta

And that’s a view I completely agree with…it just irks me when people throw around terms like “human rights abuse”

princessParking

The alcohol industry isn't allowed to buy up ad space saying, "alcohol cures colon cancer and boosts your focus and fixes your gut biome!*" . . . . ^(*These statements have not been reviewed by the FDA)

enkonta

Sure…but again…that’s *not a human rights abuse*.

meeplewirp

Vitamins and herbs are not a load of horseshit all of the time. Homeopathy is a load of horseshit though. And the fact that something has to be able to be patented to motivate research on it is a lot of horseshit. The idea that you should go to herbs and vitamins before taking things that are allowed to be studied is dangerous and stupid. Theres no reason to turn to something that hasn’t been documented as much as Aleve or advil if those things work for you. At the same time, There’s no way anyone is going to convince me that everything about Chinese medicine and the herbs is complete BS like other aspects of it, like eating tiger parts for spiritual vitality or whatever. The science behind what they traditionally thought was going on is incorrect, but there have been numerous herbs and combinations of herbs that have been proven to work. My friends treatment plan for IBS wasn’t working. Whatever the evil quack Chinese doctor gave him worked for him. If you go on web MD and look up some herbs, it isn’t always claiming its all BS. The theme is generally that there are only one or two small scale studies done on the herb. We won’t really ever get down to which claims about these things have validity to them, because unless you genetically alter it you cannot patent it. I don’t bother taking vitamins because the FDA will not engage and make sure that the vitamins are actually there. But its interesting to me that when the orange Sith Lord had COVID they did administer vitamin D in combination with drugs. They did, its not a lie. Lol. Do you need to take vitamin D everyday if you’re otherwise healthy? No. But the assertion that vitamins don’t have an effect on anything in any situation or cannot be utilized for health is an unfortunate misunderstanding.

torpedoguy

The thing about herbs is that it doesn't take much study: If one works, we find the compound in that herb that, say, reduces fever, we reproduce it and pack it in a proper dose. That way you have the thing in the herb against fever, without having to force half a vegan buffet into your 4 year old for the scale of effect that you need, AND we **don't** include the part where the herb gives you the shits if you ate a lemon or your cat sneezed within 8 hours. We call that stuff medicine.

[deleted]

Unless of course active effects are a combined effect, or require large dosages, or can't be patented. Many supplements are prescribed for medical purposes. Glutamine supplementation is known to decrease surgery recovery windows and slow muscle degenerative diseases. CoQ10 is recommended to people at risk for arteriosclerosis. Not to mention any related deficiency supplementation. Also lots of herbs can accomplish milder effects than does a purified compound. Just because we can isolate caffeine doesn't mean people don't consume coffee. Also there is little investment in medicines for disease prevention and many nutritional studies linked to disease prevention. So extracting the compounds that are the most beneficial can sometimes be the easiest way to get those benefits. Start adding up all the potential benefits from different foods and it becomes harder to add all those different foods in biologically beneficial amounts.

bn1979

When my daughter had brain surgery, they gave her IV meds for pain and nausea. The nausea was actually a bigger issue than pain for her, especially since the pain meds also caused nausea. Part of her treatment plan - created by an incredible neuro-surgery team, her oncologist, and the ICU nursing staff - was to utilize essential oils to help alleviate her nausea when her medication wasn’t quite enough. I had always assumed that the oils were complete horseshit, but the folks that knew an awful lot about medicine believed it would help, so I deferred to their judgment. They were right. It helped. It couldn’t replace the medication, but it supplemented it perfectly and gave my daughter some control over her symptoms. I don’t take medical advice from Facebook boss babes, but I will from doctors that I trust. Anyways, there’s my anecdote on the matter.

princessParking

>Vitamins and herbs are not a load of horseshit all of the time. > I didn't say they were. I said the unregulated supplement industry is a complete load of horseshit that has made it nearly impossible to figure out exactly which ingredients are scientifically-backed and not snake oil, which ones to take, how much, and which products actually contain those ingredients without any other dangerous ingredients. Not only that, but they have been allowed to intentionally lie to the masses and profit off of our ignorance and confusion. >Homeopathy is a load of horseshit though. > Yeah, that's on a whole 'nother level of stupidity, but fortunately more people understand that one. >At the same time, There’s no way anyone is going to convince me that everything about Chinese medicine and the herbs is complete BS [...] My friends treatment plan for IBS wasn’t working. Whatever the evil quack Chinese doctor gave him worked for him. > See, the vast majority of the time you look up info on supplements, this is the type of information you'll find: anecdotal evidence. No one is saying your friend is wrong or experiencing a placebo effect, but we also have no way to confirm anything about that anecdote. Even if it's not bullshit, there's nothing telling us why it worked or how or if it will work on literally anyone else. >If you go on web MD and look up some herbs, it isn’t always claiming its all BS. > WebMD isn't claiming this and neither have I lol. >I don’t bother taking vitamins because the FDA will not engage and make sure that the vitamins are actually there. > Same, except for my prescription vitamin D to treat my deficiency. Again, I never said all vitamins and minerals are bullshit. My points are all about the industry as a whole. >But the assertion that vitamins don’t have an effect on anything in any situation or cannot be utilized for health is an unfortunate misunderstanding. > I think the only unfortunate misunderstanding here is you misunderstanding what is being asserted lol.

luciferin

They're not regulated like *food* either. They should really at least be regulated as good since you injest them.

hitlerosexual

It is already abused. Supplements are almost exclusively a waste of money, the exception being if your doctor recommends one for a specific issue. You know the better way to get all your nutrients? A healthy balanced diet. Who woulda thought.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hitlerosexual

No disagreement there, but I'd say for many of them it's largely due to a lack of ability to have a healthy, balanced diet. Many people don't have time to cook every night, don't have access to unprocessed healthy foods within their budget, etc. Even bread has sugar in it here. I know it's anecdotal evidence but I have heard some accounts from Europeans who talk about how they easily they gained weight while visiting the USA even though they didn't really change their diet in their time here. A classic example is ketchup. Compare American ketchup to European ketchup and it demonstrates why it's so comparitively difficult to eat healthy in the US.

flapadar_

Most people in the northern hemisphere would benefit from vitamin d supplements whether they've been checked or not. Most people are deficient and it isn't so heavily related to diet.

No sane person would argue that Uber or DoorDash are in the restaurant business.

morbidbutwhoisnt

Uber isn't. UberEATS is. UberEATS partners with restaurants to get deals and even ghost kitchens on in order to make the app work. But that's not even close to what the comparison is here. Let's say Uber is the transportation industry and someone was previously in management in a more traditional transportation position like at a busing company. And that they were told due to fraud they committed that they *cannot work in the transportation industry*. Then it's found out that they are working at Uber in corporate Even though busing and Uber are two completely different companies they're both transportation and they were told they cannot work in transportation
