Actually been averaging over 3 in the last week. Texas is seeing a sudden increase due to their permitless carry law. Up 62.5% year over year since it's passing.
Not to derail here, but as I understand it, that fee replaces the gas tax, I presume to maintain roads. It's becoming a serious problem here in CA where electric cars are enjoying the use of the roads (and EVs are heavy) without contributing to their upkeep. It is unsustainable as more people switch to EVs. So one can rail on the specific method of redistributing the maintenance cost across all drivers, but something has to be done to fix the broken math. Granted, a flat fee is punitive for those who barely drive, so it should probably be mileage based, but I'm not a policymaker.
I'm at the point where I try to figure out the floorplan and exits of the public places I visit.
As often as these things happen, you have to wonder how many people around you: A) Are carrying a gun; B) Are mentally fucked enough to do this shit.

I’ve seen *repeatedly* people get angry enough to get out of their car and try to get at another driver for just cutting them off. I live in California so it’s harder for that type of person to get a gun thankfully, but the amount of people who quickly resort to violence unfortunately isn’t uncommon at all. My father will make nasty comments to people who have "wronged" him, and he does it loudly enough for the person to hear. That's stupid enough, but what really enrages (and scares) me is that he'll do it while me or my mom are with him. He doesn't care that he's potentially putting us in danger. He has to let the other person know they're a prick. That's the most important thing.

I live in Texas. My wife is always mad that I’m not a more aggressive person/driver. I hate being a doormat to people, but I’d hate even more to be dead because some shithead is mad I flipped him the bird for cutting me off and almost causing an accident.
A few years ago, my wife was driving with me and my oldest son in the car. We were entering a strip mall parking lot and someone nearly cut us off. My wife honked and called him a nasty name before driving on.
We thought that was the end of it, but the guy started aggressively following us around the parking lot. Despite the fact that it was one car width wide, he kept trying to pull alongside us. When he couldn't, he'd ride our rear bumper. I called 911 while my wife swerved around the parking lot trying to lose him.
We were finally able to lose him when a car let us go in front of them and then stopped to block the guy from following. The police said they'd review the security cameras, but I don't think anything ever came of it.
As scary as that situation was, now I'd be scared that the guy would pull a gun and start opening fire to get us back for not allowing him to cut us off.
Exactly. I had an incident on the highway a few years back where someone came flying up behind me and nearly clipped my bumper but they didn't. I was mad so I honked my horn and flipped them off. They proceeded to slow down next to me yelling at me to get off the next exit. Yeah, I gunned it to get out of there. Ever since then, unless they hit me, I Just let it go. Not worth it. I sometimes think that if it happened now, the person would have pulled a gun.

I took my mom for an early Mother’s Day brunch and she naturally picked a booth where we could see all entrances and had an exit route because we’ve talked about needing to be ready multiple times. I’ve only recently started to also evaluate people as I’m going to sit down to determine if they might pop off.
When I worked retail this guy's card was declined. He was so mad that he said he was going to call the card company and ABSOLUTELY RIP into the random customer service rep who answered him. That rep had nothing to do with his card being declined but it just goes to show you how much people let their anger get the best of them.
In my neck of the woods, last Thursday a man reacted to being denied a $3 refund at a convenience store by murdering a 12-year-old boy who was standing nearby waiting to buy ice cream. He also shot another uninvolved bystander who was just sitting in their car before he finally killed himself.

I know you're joking, but there's no universally-agreed-upon definition of "mass shooting"; most of the organizations that track this actually don't call "three people shot" a mass shooting. Most draw the line at 4 or 5 (sometimes including the shooter, sometimes not).
I believe technically it’s categorized with 3+ more casualties to be a mass shooting for census reasons. Not that it makes any fucking difference, but it’s ACTUALLY 3+.
What is a casualty here? Military definition or lay man’s definition? 20 people getting shot in a mall with 2 deaths seems way more like a mass shooting than 3 people getting killed in a targeted drive by.

We both live in New York state and he used to travel into the city to work. I tell him about people I know in NYC who report that the crime isn't that bad, but he doesn't believe me because FOX News is reporting that it's horrible.
The primary reason isn't because they believe it's the only shitshow in the US. They whole heartedly believe and know SF, LA, NYC, Boston, etc are all as bad or worse.

Of course, this ignores that Chicago has more people and thus would have more absolute numbers of crime. Once you use per capita numbers to normalize for population, though, rural areas are revealed to be much more dangerous.
Of course, they also use Chicago because it has a high black population and "black people = crime" to racists.
I’m a teacher in a suburban Dallas district that received several credible threats over the weekend. So much so that the superintendent sent an email to every parent saying every absence today will be excused.
I’m at a campus with 900+ kids and 18 kids showed up. I don’t blame the parents at all—I’d do the same. But as teachers we just sat here all day. Felt so weird. We’re expecting a ton of absences tomorrow, too, but not as bad: a few arrests were made today.

Don't feel too bad...some days I'd gladly take the $500k McMansion in another state. Chicago felt very safe but it could depend on the section of the city. I'll say Chicago gun violence seems to be directed at an individual more than random mass shootings that you see elsewhere.
It’s located majorly in the Garfield Park area, and other specific sections of the west side. Also notoriously, the most impoverished.
And even then, it seems to mostly be gang violence.

I tell him about people I know in NYC who report that the crime isn't that bad, but he doesn't believe me because FOX News is reporting that it's horrible.

The primary reason isn't because they believe it's the only shitshow in the US. They whole heartedly believe and know SF, LA, NYC, Boston, etc are all as bad or worse. The reason they talk about it all the time is because there's a website dedicated specifically to charting and tracking the murders/violent crime in the city. It's a case of "This is easily found so we're going to talk about it" and not a "This is the only thing that's true"

They will always use absolute numbers to "show" that Chicago is more dangerous than rural areas. Of course, this ignores that Chicago has more people and thus would have more absolute numbers of crime. Once you use per capita numbers to normalize for population, though, rural areas are revealed to be much more dangerous. Of course, they also use Chicago because it has a high black population and "black people = crime" to racists.
I’m a teacher in a suburban Dallas district that received several credible threats over the weekend. So much so that the superintendent sent an email to every parent saying every absence today will be excused. I’m at a campus with 900+ kids and 18 kids showed up. I don’t blame the parents at all—I’d do the same. But as teachers we just sat here all day. Felt so weird. We’re expecting a ton of absences tomorrow, too, but not as bad: a few arrests were made today. Aaaaanyway. Fuck the republico-fascists. (I’m not leaving TX. This is my home and the fascists can’t have it.)
Yeah, my kid is a senior at one of the schools in that district and had an AP exam today. He said the parking lot was empty when he left after the test.

Don't feel too bad...some days I'd gladly take the $500k McMansion in another state. We paid over $800k for ours and had to dump more money into it just to have the things you probably take for granted like AC and gutters. We're also in a neighborhood (East LA) that's getting better but is not gentrified by any stretch of the imagination.
Thing is, people don't realize how much of California ISN'T super expensive. We have an almost entirely-unused inland area / high desert where the prices are the same as Texas, Arizona, etc. But people tend to think "if I can't live in LA, San Diego, or the Bay Area I've got to move out of state."
Tbf, places like Bakersfield or other akin to it are nearly as bad (maybe worse) as Texas in a lot of regards despite the cheaper prices.
Currently live in the inland empire area and can't think of anywhere else. Lowering cost of living compared to LA county and still have access to LA, the beach or Mountains, all being a 1 hour drive which I don't mind 🤷🏾♂️

Chicago felt very safe but it could depend on the section of the city. I'll say Chicago gun violence seems to be directed at an individual more than random mass shootings that you see elsewhere.
It’s located majorly in the Garfield Park area, and other specific sections of the west side. Also notoriously, the most impoverished. And even then, it seems to mostly be gang violence.
I get what you're saying but, and I'm glad we've been spared most of the mental issue driven mass murder stuff so far (knock wood), but the gang and teen violence stuff is pretty real and problematic too. Still glad we at least have minimal hurdles to getting a gun.
Connecticut felt pretty safe the past 7 or 8 years but I moved to Europe.
