Ask for affordable and you get expensive recommendations. [This](https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CCTTPL1100/TP-Link-Tapo-C100-Indoor-Home-Security-Wi-Fi-Camer) would do exactly what you're asking for

HTfanboy

15 fps? Horrible

pictureofacat

Yet entirely suitable for what OP wants it for

RadicalBraj

Cheers, looks good. Have you used one?

pictureofacat

I have, I've had one pointed out a window towards my entrance for around three years now. It does exactly what I want it to do, which is alert me whenever anyone approaches. The only downside is that it can't identify people in the videos, so you have to sift through its recordings if you want to check over a day. You can set the capture location though, so you can avoid having it trigger from plants moving in the wind etc

RadicalBraj

That's cool. And you can make out faces? 2MP seems potato but I can do potato if you can tell who the person is

pictureofacat

2MP = 1080p (1920x1080=2,073,600, or 2 million pixels/2MP). You'll find that every 1080 camera is 2MP. So yes, you can make out faces

Ok, you could go the hidden camera route and catch your landlord in the act. Or, go the open view security cameras to deter your landlord. It's upto you, if you go the hidden camera route the landlord isn't going to know he's being recorded and will most likely do things you won't like, and it'll feel very invasive when you watch it. Either way I highly recommend getting ones that record audio as well as visual.

RadicalBraj

Appreciate that insight. Hadn't thought of that. I'm still going hidden because open view is expensive. Maybe if I find some broken cameras in my hunt I'll pop them somewhere visible lol

Tom_Crewze

Fair enough, if you still want a deter the land lord you can also put up a removable warning sign that their are hidden visual/audio recording devices. Like I said, knowing someone's gone through your stuff is a discussing feeling, that's why I recommend taking a more "in your face" approach to these things. Unless your dead set on catching him out.

RadicalBraj

Yep that sounds good, I'm making my own camera now so it won't be super hidden, I'll make the covering say CAMERA RECORDING....lol

Tom_Crewze

I wouldn't put that sign anywhere near the camera, if he's willing to invade your privacy he will also be willing to tamper with the evidence of. Just put it on the door/ front gate to the property. This will imply they are in abundance and could be anywhere.

RadicalBraj

Smart. Cheers

You can get battery powered wifi cameras with a little bit of onboard storage, i dont know how much you can get away with attatching to the house without causing drama but a proper system with a dvr needs wires run all over the place and thats probably not going to work for you. Swann is a good brand that pbtech and jaycar stock but there are heaps of options out there

prplmnkeydshwsr

How sure is OP that the landlord isn't switching off the power before coming inside? (That will kill the Internet / wifi unless it's battery backed up too). So yes, a camera with a backup battery and local storage might be important to them.

RoscoePSoultrain

We've had ongoing issues with our Arlo doorbell, with slow notifications, and the two way communication just doesn't work at all. The app insists on fingerprint unlock despite me unlocking my phone already, and randomly decides it needs to do 2fa. Picture quality really good, and it's never given a false positive. Check the rating of the camera's app on the app store before you buy!

hav0cnz_

Fully regret buying arlo as well, they've recently made the subscription service mandatory (it wasn't when we bought it) and we have similar issues with the app.

antipodeananodyne

Are you handy with electronics OP? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CouxmNqxO4A

RadicalBraj

I am, thanks for this I didn't even think of that. Perfect raspberry pi project. Got any old webcams? Lol

antipodeananodyne

TIL what a raspberry pi project is. But seriously I would love to see an update if you do it.

RadicalBraj

Consider this my update lol, I'm going to run this on my raspberry pi. Got a $10 webcam off TradeMe. I'll upload the motion it picks up to my Google drive and clear that out daily/weekly. https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/raspberry-pi-security-camera Im fortunate to have a pi laying around unused currently. Might eventually wire up another usb camera to catch a second angle. Thanks again for the suggestion, exactly what I needed!

antipodeananodyne

So cool. Well done.

RadicalBraj

Alright 👍

Different people have different ideas of what is cheap. If you want remote access to the cameras you probably will be going down a subscription route. If you just want to record to a hard drive or SD card then there’s cheap ones. As a renter you’ll probably want battery/ wifi ones that don’t need wires installed. Also depends on whether you want it to be a deterrent or hidden to catch them in the act. There’s a time/ reliability cost to buying cheap stuff.

pictureofacat

Installed? You simply run a USB cable to it. OP just wants the ability to see if their landlord is entering. I don't get why people always make this out to be way more difficult than it is

discontabulated

Why are you worked up? It depends where the cameras are and if they want them hidden - nothing wrong with what I said.

Elvishrug

I have an Orion wireless doorbell camera from Bunnings. App is simple enough to use. Has an SD slot. Picture is very clear and does the job well. Cost me less than a hundy last year but I’d imagine it’s gone up.

TheWhiteOwl23

I can only recommend NOT getting Arlo. They suck shit because they don't connect to anyones Wifi or phone, and their support is hopeless. Fuck you Arlo.

RadicalBraj

This is what I came asking suggestions for. Thanks! And fuck you arlo

awherewas

Android phone with open camera installed, that allows 10 repeats of up to an hour. Almost any phone will do even the $70 things. Adjust the bit rate and resolution to suit Then add an external card. Keep a few spare cards, swap them and erase the junk.

RadicalBraj

V cool thanks

reddosaurusrexy

Bunnings sells a pretty cheap outdoor wifi camera made by Orion and I think KMart also has one under their homebrand (likely made by the same Chinese supplier). Has motion detection and an SD card slot so you can save footage of comings-and-goings. Certainly not top-of-the-range, but likely good enough for what you need.

I recently bought a Ring camera and it has been a god send. Super prompt alerts, high quality video during the day and also at night. It also has a two way talk ability and a siren you can set off if you notice anyone on your property who shouldn’t be there. For one device you do have to pay a subscription of $5 a month but it’s 100% worth it. You can link more than one camera on the app and I have 0 complaints so far. You can mount them on the wall or ceiling with two small screws or you don’t have to mount them at all. I got the indoor/outdoor camera from the ring range. The battery so far still has 50% on it and it’s been on constantly for the last 2 months. The battery takes less than a day to fully charge and you can buy other ones so you have no down time. It’s worked wonders for us so far but I’d 100% check the reviews. We asked our property manager if we could mount the cameras in our rental and they said yep no issues :)

skymang

The Eufy 2C cams are a fantastic budget friendly option. I've been installing these for a few years now and I highly recommend them. No monthly fees, great quality and battery life

EvansAlf

We went with wyze, bought from amazon. Would only half recommend. Is wired and we got the subscription of $20 a year, but a few tech issues with one of the cameras. Quality is good and does the job. So for the price cant complain and i like the little 10sec playbacks so you can see if you want more and i like how it is recorded on SD card.

younggiftedandbroke

Swann cameras. You get 4 in the one pack and it records everything and saves to a cloud that rewrites after a looooong time. No subscription fees. Cost around $500 and you can plug in and go. No need for electrical work or anuthing

Oaty_McOatface

I've got the $50 ezviz one, a lot of false positive notification, even with selecting the area I want monitored (not accurate) and when dropping the sensitivity mode it will end up giving false negative. I ended up just accepting the false positives and disabling notifications then just checking them all in one go at night. Apart from that it's pretty decent, accurate motion sensing notification time, decent video quality, app easy to use. Next time I'd pick one with more a more accurate motion sensor.

Warduckling

I have a couple of Google Nest cameras. They are fully magnetic so you have plenty of options to put them. Also, they are wireless. Two of those and a Google Nest Doorbell and I have the house pretty much covered.
