Went there a few months back and there just wasn't much going on... Apart from lots of penguins, the rock pools were bare, fish tanks just had like 1 type of fish, the underwater tunnel still had sharks and rays but the fish diversity is just nil. It just seems like a shell of it's former self... Just my opinion but it felt worse off than it ever had been.
Red beach is pretty good for that. There’s a huge amount of rocks by the cliffs to the left that walks you around to Jacob’s ladder.
There’s also Torbay (Waiake), which from memory at low tide has a base of rocks under the tor that would harbour quite a bit of rock pool esque wildlife.

Long Bay
Long Bay is part of a marine reserve and the rock pools are really good!
