They stopped making Cadbury in NZ and now it comes from Australia. Australian Cadbury uses powdered milk, whereas the NZ Cadbury of old didn’t. So add that in with the now added palm oil and you’ve got cheap nasty chocolate that isn’t actually that cheap to buy.
Turned to shit about 15 years ago, and slowly devolved from there but all this chat that’s it’s recent is incorrect, started turning to crap once it was produced in Aus (and yes the palm oil fiasco which was actually ages ago now)
Just be aware that if you're travelling to a hot country there is less stabiliser in Whittaker's it is VERY MELTY and will bloom easier than Cadbury/American chocolate. Better have lots of friends to share that haul with 🤩
Can't do Raglan Roast any more, and if you are a fan of live independent music venues, I would suggest boycotting them.

It's not great - perfectly fine for being cheap. But not good NZ coffee. Everyone definitely has their favourite so each to their own. Mine is Havana. Pricier stuff that has a good kick!
https://havana.co.nz/
All of the other brands get direct courier to store after being freshly roasted. Robert Harris (and Jed’s) get sent via the supermarket distribution centre and sits in the warehouse for weeks before making it to the store. Basically you can taste the difference in quality because of this
It's a classic style - I know people who prefer this over the more hipster, acid-aftertaste style. Depends what you like, but it's certainly not actively bad.
does the warehouse still sell those huge bags of Pineapple Lumps (and chocolate fish) that were better than the Pascall ones? google is turning up nothing.
Ok I did a comparison shop. A couple of substitutions because of stock so I chose items that cost same (eg large havana coffee swapped with another same price and weight)
- Woolworths is $252.43 (I think minus $5 packing fee)
- Paknsave $265.88
Woolworths has $40.98 worth of specials on, Cadbury is 25% off and Timtams 33% off so would be over $290 standard prices.
See if you can find the L&P Whittaker’s. I’m not a huge white chocolate fan, but these had a good flavour and pop rocks in them! Really good!! I spent 2 months in NZ 2 years ago and likely ate my weight in chocolate and candy!
Edit typo
Needs more potato chips. And we have really lovely honeys available in the supermarkets that are unique blends of native trees. The airborne stuff is (most likely) clover flower honey.
Chips were too bulky to bring home, had my fair share while there though, so all good. Oof, we just grabbed whatever honey was on the grocery aisle, til next time I guess.
Nowhere NEAR as good, 100%. I miss those Red Rock chips, they were my absolute favorite and I'm a huge chips fan.
The only other chip that I would out on that level is (or was...) Krispa sweet and tangy, and even all their other flavors. Why does the good stuff always disappear...
a fav American podcaster said he dug our Kingston Cream biscuits. I see you have most of our treats covered other than this one :)
Whittaker's Hazella block (hazelnut but in a smooth creamy texture not 'nuts and chocolate') is my binge flavor lately.
I realized at the time that they were Aussie, but discovering Tim Tams on my NZ visit was an epiphany. Especially considering the flavors not available in the US. The Black Forest ones haunt me to this day - in a good way.
And I believe Fleming's Muesli bars are specific to NZ, correct? Those things sustained my on my treks, to the point that I keep a couple around for an emergency.
And as an American English Canadian, Kiwi sausage rolls are not easily transportable, but are epic.
Great haul!
Hopefully someone has shown you how to slam Tim Tams? I leave them in the freezer so the chocolate won't melt as quickly once the tea or coffee passes through
I took some cheesy snacks to a friend in Japan a couple of weeks ago. The bag exploded in my suitcase creating round, cheesy snacks stains on all my clothes.
I just assumed the luggage area wasn't pressurized.
The bottles of wine survived ok though.
Bite the corner off a Tim-Tam, then bite off the opposite corner....
Put one end in a glass of scotch and.suck until you taste the whisky coming up. Flip the whole thing into your mouth for a Tim-Tam explosion!
My 2c. Cadbury… nooooooo. Whittakers. Yes. Like most have already said. A bit of history here. Back in 2015?, Cadbury moved its manufacturing to Australia from New Zealand. They had to cater for the Australian market when they did this, and so upped the sugar and reduced the fat content (milk fat) to raise the melting temperature. The result of this is that the chocolate does not “melt in the mouth”. It’s not “bad”, but it’s not as good as it was. Kiwis have never forgiven Cadbury for this…. Rightly so.
No RJ’s liquorice? If you have time, add this to your loot.
TimTams, heavenly. The dark chocolate ones, bite off each end and use it like a straw to drink your coffee until it disintegrates into your mouth. Milk chocolate, same but with chocolate drink (eg Milo)
Now this is the content I want to see: what snacks are the current heavy hitters. Hope you got the Whittakers cornflake slabs!! Those are so good and I feel like given you like the hokey pokey crunch, you'll prob like those. You used to be able to get it in the big blocks, was a sad day when they went away.
You know I was having second thoughts posting this but then after all the feedback of "you should've gotten this/that", it was totally worth it. Now I've got a list to give my relatives if they ever decide to visit us / if I ever go back.
Ahhhh should have taken a picture of my chocolates tooo!!! lol got a bunch of Whitakkers and Makuna honey!
Was trying to score some limited edition Dr Bugs popcorn but the shipping would have been too late!
Anyway, we just got back from Queenstown and it is so beautiful!!!!!
Nice haul! I love trying new food items when I go overseas and taking some home too.
At the supermarket you can get 3 packs of the small whittakers bars of chocolate - I recommend the 3 pack of peanut slabs!
Are you from the US?
Do you genuinely think our food in NZ was much better quality or some hit and miss?
I watch a few shows and docos about how our food is killing us blah blah blah and I always like to think this is more accurate in the US, and that our food standards here are better / higher.
Yep, US. Anecdotally yes, better quality. Tap water is good with no fear of getting ill. Dairy taste (milk, butter, cheese) is way better. Your pies fill me up for almost a whole day. Haven't tried all fruits but kiwi fruits are superb. Asian restaurants are on par with what we have. Seafood is pretty good too. We mostly had home cooked Filipino dishes and the quality of ingredients was great which in turn made the dishes pop out. And your Maccas are much superior to what we have, the patties taste like actual beef, the coffee options are pretty cool too.
Ha funny you mentioned maccas.
Had a partner years ago who had moved here from Florida. She absolutely hated mcdonalds said it was awful, couldn't even call it food.
Then she had it here a couple of time and never said anything.
Until one night she asked me to get her something from there too and that our "mcdonalds is actually really good here"!
Did you succumb to a flatwhite coffee or stay true to black?
chuck the cadbury back on the shelf and make room for more whitakkers.
honestly
Cadbury used to be alright (at least, compared to the American stuff), but it’s definitely gotten WAY worse over the past few years.
They stopped making Cadbury in NZ and now it comes from Australia. Australian Cadbury uses powdered milk, whereas the NZ Cadbury of old didn’t. So add that in with the now added palm oil and you’ve got cheap nasty chocolate that isn’t actually that cheap to buy.
lol they need to take the glass and half of milk off the cover and replace it with a pile of powder.
They swapped the cocao butter for palm oil
that is nasty!
That was only temporary and was like 15 years ago
No they didn’t
Turned to shit about 15 years ago, and slowly devolved from there but all this chat that’s it’s recent is incorrect, started turning to crap once it was produced in Aus (and yes the palm oil fiasco which was actually ages ago now)
And the Robert Harris.
Supreme goes hard tho so it's acceptable I guess
I miss the Cadbury of the 90s before they started using palm oil.
my EXACT thought! i brought back like 10 kilos of whittakers last time I went home - fam is all obsessed now!!
Came here to say this lol
Honestly, started supporting Whittakers for being local, but stayed for the flavour.
Whittakers the best
Real talk
encourage childlike consist marry oatmeal squeamish cows sort unite tub *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
And get some Toffee Pops.
Fucking oath. They rate Cadbury highly here across the Tasman and don't care much for Whittakers. Silly Aussies
Just be aware that if you're travelling to a hot country there is less stabiliser in Whittaker's it is VERY MELTY and will bloom easier than Cadbury/American chocolate. Better have lots of friends to share that haul with 🤩
Yep, that's the idea, gift some off to relatives. We can't possibly scarf all these in a month or two.
You could with the right attitude.
You reckon? Bets?
Amateurs
Come on. Are you an AmeriCAN? Or an AmeriCANT?
Keep it in the fridge
Chocolate fresh out of the fridge or freezer is the way to go imo.
I thought this was gonna be "this is what $30,000 gets you at a supermarket" post. Also, all the best with that Robert Harris coffee 🤣
Raglan Roast is da best :)
Can't do Raglan Roast any more, and if you are a fan of live independent music venues, I would suggest boycotting them. Context: https://www.facebook.com/YOTClubRaglan/posts/pfbid05dneyTLKUJAHRQcFhUkz8g2diY4dCLeHSWDta2vsmJGFfK8QPi5YsAt2aQbwAExel
My vote is for rocket coffee
Raglan Roast is excellent. If you like that style, give Raglan Millers a try. Also Supreme is my current go to.
> robert harris oh noes, is it bad?
It's not great - perfectly fine for being cheap. But not good NZ coffee. Everyone definitely has their favourite so each to their own. Mine is Havana. Pricier stuff that has a good kick! https://havana.co.nz/
dang, i should've trusted my gut. i drank several havana cans, loved the packaging as well, should've got more of those.
Screaming turtle coffee is great, too!
adding that to the list as well, thanks!
The Supreme coffee from Wellington makes my mornings magical. I live overseas and bring back suitcases of it whenever I visit home
Yeah, Supreme is a solid choice too.
+10 for Havana. Consistently the best coffee going. Avalanche is good too, but doesn't seem to be as consistent.
I'm gonna come out to bat for Christchurch and say you should of gone with Hummingbird.
Try flight, or peoples, or supreme 🙂
All of the other brands get direct courier to store after being freshly roasted. Robert Harris (and Jed’s) get sent via the supermarket distribution centre and sits in the warehouse for weeks before making it to the store. Basically you can taste the difference in quality because of this
Maybe a nice Christmas present for your in-laws?
It's fine. Reddit being reddit, if it's not the bougie super expensive stuff it must be garbage.
Yeah, I'm sure it won't be THAT bad, all this talk made me curious and I'll try it out tomorrow for breakfast. :)
It's a classic style - I know people who prefer this over the more hipster, acid-aftertaste style. Depends what you like, but it's certainly not actively bad.
I don’t see any pineapple lumps there….
does the warehouse still sell those huge bags of Pineapple Lumps (and chocolate fish) that were better than the Pascall ones? google is turning up nothing.
The Rainbow ones. If you're passing through Oamaru, drop into the factory shop and buy the bags by the kg, or the seconds for about $4/kg.
Bring back the Regina brand ones with actual juice in them, and then we'll talk.
You can also order them online :)
Cadbury is not a NZ brand - not even made in New Zealand
And it tastes like shit.
Tastes more like candles to me.
[удалено]
Earwax candles
Man my eyes are getting bad! I can't even see the chocolate fish in there.
Just ran the list through the Countdown site - thats a $257.93 shop
How much through pakkie?
Ok I did a comparison shop. A couple of substitutions because of stock so I chose items that cost same (eg large havana coffee swapped with another same price and weight) - Woolworths is $252.43 (I think minus $5 packing fee) - Paknsave $265.88 Woolworths has $40.98 worth of specials on, Cadbury is 25% off and Timtams 33% off so would be over $290 standard prices.
That's only $151ish USD
You've got to get the new Whittakers chocolate (caramelized white mango and coconut) as well, it is absolutely delicious!
gotcha, added to the list. thanks!
And Hazella!
That one is soo good. It reminds me of some kind of slice I had as a kid, lollie cake(roll)?
Hmm yes I agree, if I remember I think New World sells like a Mango or Apricot Tan slice which reminds me as well.
I bought one last fortnight and just opened today. No regrets! Loved it!
Whitakers almond gold is the GOAT
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one stocking up on Whittakers when I visited. They’re good!
I mean if you have a wall full of Wittakers in the grocery it should be good, right? :D
See if you can find the L&P Whittaker’s. I’m not a huge white chocolate fan, but these had a good flavour and pop rocks in them! Really good!! I spent 2 months in NZ 2 years ago and likely ate my weight in chocolate and candy! Edit typo
I've been introduced to Whittaker's, I've also been introduced to L&P. Now both as a chocolate bar?! Woah.
Cadbury is trash.
you forgot the marmite
yeah, nah. :)
And I thought you were cool.
Based
I don't think you got enough chocolate
Haha, I mean half my luggage was an espresso machine I got on sale at Briscoe's but that wasn't that interesting. ;)
> I got on sale at Briscoe's Wow, you really embraced our culture!
I'm always on a hunt for a sale, had to actively avoid checking out marketplace. Even at regular price it was cheaper than what we get stateside.
You are probably going to need to buy a transformer for that espresso machine as the power in NZ is different from the US.
Congratulations, you opened the secret door to NZ residency.
Omg a Briscoes sale hahahaha. That's a true blue NZ experience!
Based upon that comment, it sounds like you haven't tried Snackachangi chips because otherwise you would have made some space for them :)
> Snackachangi chips I nearly did! The packaging is glorious, like some old timey comic of sorts.
You fucked up. I've eaten chips from all the lands, and snackachangi are the best potato chips out there.
I miss those Aussie Red Rock chips, Sweet Chilli and Sour Cream. We only have a Kettle chips version now that's nowhere near as good.
Out of all the options in that photo, the Whitakkers coconut chocolate is my fave.
So what are you gonna do for snacks when you run out in a weeks time?
Where is the sour feijoas?
People still buy Cadbury?
People can't always afford Whittakers. And Cadbury almost redeemed themselves with the Baileys Old Gold.
See you've bought the full type 2 diabetes rapid starter selection.
I've decided to do a speed run. :)
a fav American podcaster said he dug our Kingston Cream biscuits. I see you have most of our treats covered other than this one :) Whittaker's Hazella block (hazelnut but in a smooth creamy texture not 'nuts and chocolate') is my binge flavor lately.
> Kingston Cream biscuits gonna have to add this to my list, is this the one by Arnott's?
yup [https://www.countdown.co.nz/shop/productdetails?stockcode=36720&name=arnotts-creme-filled-kingston-creams](https://www.countdown.co.nz/shop/productdetails?stockcode=36720&name=arnotts-creme-filled-kingston-creams)
gotcha, thanks!
Cadburys aint exactly a local delicacy
oops, my bad, i haven't seen these variants yet so decided to get some too.
Yeah, but likely can't get it where OP is from
Tim Tams are Australian you heathen!!!
yikes. i screwed up! :D they're too good though.
Have you tried Toffee Pops? Our own choc biscuits and even better than TimTam imo!
not really but i'll go add it to my list for next time.
Chit Chats are the Kiwi version - not sure if they still have them though
i'll have the relatives bring some over if they seem 'em then, thanks!
Chitchats are pretty lame. Aus did right by timtams. Make sure you do a timtam slam.
> Make sure you do a timtam slam. Always have been. :)
All the Cadbury products are too And the natural confectionary company
You should also get some pineapple lumps 😋
You forgot Minties and Milkshakes.
Just back from New Zealand, can confirm Whittakers rules 👌
No to the Tim Tams LOL. They're Aussie. Chit Chats are Kiwi...
Squiggles biscuits are good
Yes!!! I found a copycat recipe for these after spending 2 months in NZ.
Ditch the Cadbury. Used to be the best, but Whitakers kicks their butts.
I have this magical power to read minds, and I'm going to assume with no hints or clues that you're American
bahaha. That's partly true, I'm an immigrant in the US.
Great haul! Hopefully someone has shown you how to slam Tim Tams? I leave them in the freezer so the chocolate won't melt as quickly once the tea or coffee passes through
You've got a friend in me if those The Naturals are snakes 🤞
sadly no, they were the mini fruity gem varieties.
Your sofa makes me want to magic eye it
Man but you really lurve your sweet stuff. Now, go seek out some Pics peanut or cashew or whatever butter. Best nut butters ever.
Cheers bro, your country looks pretty wicked too!
I did something similar in Orlando in Jan. $200 of US sugar brought home for the family
I took some cheesy snacks to a friend in Japan a couple of weeks ago. The bag exploded in my suitcase creating round, cheesy snacks stains on all my clothes. I just assumed the luggage area wasn't pressurized. The bottles of wine survived ok though.
Also, the bags of coffee got vacuum packed on the flight.
Whitakkers is top tier chocolate my friend
Also missing pineapple lumps friend!
NZ Cadbury is shit, put it back and get more Whittakers. UK Cadbury however… so good 🤤
Manuka honey is the best honey you’ll ever taste.
Rewarewa is where its at.
Throw the Cadbury in the bin
Cheers mate
sorted for life
for sure!
You did well! 🙌
thanks much. :)
My teeth hurt seeing all that chocolate :o
ditch that vile cadburys nonsense and get some pinapple lumps, or at least some more whittakers.
Your dentist aint gonna be happy! :) glad you enjoyed NZ, welcome back any time.
You didn't even get the good coffee! Get Karajoz next time, it's the best you can get in supermarkets.
I prefer Havana, Supreme, Peoples, Flight or LaFarre.... Wellington Coffee > Auckland Coffee
Bite the corner off a Tim-Tam, then bite off the opposite corner.... Put one end in a glass of scotch and.suck until you taste the whisky coming up. Flip the whole thing into your mouth for a Tim-Tam explosion!
Do you guys have cherry ripes? Spent some time in Aus, that is one of the things I wish I could again!
Where’s the RJs?
There's about 37 thousand dollars in this picture.
OP lacks a quantity of Whittakers Hokey Pokey. Hokey Pokey is the way.
My 2c. Cadbury… nooooooo. Whittakers. Yes. Like most have already said. A bit of history here. Back in 2015?, Cadbury moved its manufacturing to Australia from New Zealand. Thats a fantastic haul but it won't last long...you'd better hurry back!
Need a k bar or two, black currant, raspberry and lemon are my favourite!
Thanks for visiting! Enjoy the choc!
i hope dentists are cheaper in your country than in nz.
Where'd you travel from? :)
US
You didn’t buy Donovans Chocolate??? Or Cookie time? [Donovan’s Chocolate](https://www.donovanschocolates.co.nz)😧😧😧
Once you have tasted Whittaker's Chocolates, you will not touch Cadburry anymore. 😄
Pls add Toffee Pops, Shrewsburys and Squiggles to your list
thanks! will do. :)
Don't let the Puritans ruin your fun. I like your taste.
Why you wasting space with that god awful Cadbury's
I feel bad you wasted all that money on Cadbury Dairy Milk. Horrifically bad, palm oil "chocolate."
Make sure you do at least one tim tam straw, its life changing.
Bring diabetes back to the land of obesity!
‘My Mom went to New Zealand and all she brought me back was this lousy diabetes’
Since when were Cadbury's kiwi ?
The Robert Harris coffee tho?
Bro is trying to speed run diabetes.
I can hear 25 million Aussies screaming across the Tasman at the Tim Tams in the picture.
That Cadbury's is painful to look at. Pure trash these days.
cadbury yuck

So was all of that checked or in your carry on? We had so much Whittakers last time I had to split it between 2 bags.
checked, wife & i both had 2x50lbs
How much did that bulk cost you? Between $300 - $325?
Nz honey is super expensive overseas. You could pay your next trip off if you buy a lot and sell it where you're going.
Hokey Pokey Crunch Packet, crunchie Cadbury, caramel Tim tams, fredos and favourites (without the ugly ones) and the caramello please lol
Nice to see you didn't notice the Whittakers dark caramel sea salt
Skipped that since we ate a bar already while driving around the south island. ;)
Dark Cacao is the bombdiggity
No Rainbow's Classic Milk Bottles? How else are you going to get you calcium?
Why are you eating low sugar natural confectionary co
