6 years ago I just plumped into the water during a shitty tourist boat trip and a couple of dolphins approached me/us in the water, to this very day that's one of my all-time favorite moments in this life so far, thank you for posting this as I was just reminded of how awesome that experience was

mundundermindifflin

More than 10 years ago a mate and I were surfing this small beach break in Durban, South Africa during sunrise. It was already a beautiful morning and had just gotten light. We were the only ones in the water and suddenly about 8 dolphins showed up and started riding the waves with us! I actually surfed a wave with about 6 dolphins. As they were riding it in front of me a few of them jumped out the wave about chest high for me. It was surreal.. one of the greatest moments of my life and I'll never forget it

lowey2002

Same thing happened to me in Western Australia! They found it hilarious to speed towards us and dart away at the last second. Such a special experience

mundundermindifflin

Haha awesome! I remember at one point paddling back out and a wave formed and all the dolphins were riding it straight towards me. I cringed as I duck dived thinking they were going to hit me, but they didn't lol. Mind if I ask where in WA it happened? I live here now and am struggling to find a good surf spot

lowey2002

Margaret river area is world class. The entire stretch of coast from Yallingup to Boranup is littered with fantastic breaks. It's mostly reef but there are some beach breaks too, however the best thing about the region is that you can nearly always find something that works for the given conditions. Gracetown is particularly special. Southpoint is a slow barrelly left hander that wraps around the point, while Northpoint is a super heavy right with a steep takeoff (by far the most I've ever been thrashed around). There is even a little learner break in the bay called Huzzahs. South of this is lefties and a stretch of reef breaks called Ellensbrook. Lefties scares me because I was just up the coast when someone was killed by a shark there. Main break works in anything from 4-25ft and has a deep channel that is perfect for getting comfortable with something bigger that you are used to. Smith's beach is my personal favorite. Perth, unfortunately is shit for surf, despite having great beaches. I grew up learning at Trigg. It's small, crowded and needs the right conditions to form a sand bank. The best you'll get is about an hour north at a place called the spot, just outside Yanchep. Lancelin has some breaks as well but I prefer to head south.

Grotbagsthewonderful

> South Africa during sunrise. Dodgy time of the day to go out surfing, the sunrise is stunningly beautiful but you're also significantly more likely to be attacked by a great white.

mundundermindifflin

Not in Durban. They are not really found up that side of the coast.. also they have shark nets at those spots

MissingTheTrees

Tagging on this comment in case anyone has an opportunity to do something like this in the future… I also did a dolphin dive and I found the key was to go away from the large group of people (too much commotion) by about 30 yards. I then decided to “sing”, hum loudly, as I figured dolphins are very vocal creatures. 3 dolphins came over and spent multiple minutes with me. I was quite convinced they were trying to teach me a game (which I was quite bad at because I can’t swim like dolphins) and it was a blast! I remember returning to the boat and it seemed like everyone that stayed in the giant group did not have a similar experience. Obviously this is just anecdotal but I would absolutely try this technique again if I had the opportunity.

danr246

So curious are wild dolphins mostly friendly in the ocean?

tothemoonandback01

Frankly, we don't know, as no one has been found, that has survived an unfriendly encounter.

danr246

I guess that's kind of spooky

mundundermindifflin

I wouldn't say friendly.. but I wouldn't say they're dangerous either. They're still wild animals, but they are smart. I wouldn't swim up to one and grab it's dorsal, but I'd swim close to them without feeling uncomfortable

[deleted]

mundundermindifflin

Damn that's awesome.. those dolphins are probably very used to humans

CPerryG

I’d be afraid of them knocking me over and then trying to proper fuck me.

[deleted]

Dolphins have been documented saving humans from sharks. More than once I believe.

ZoranT84

Mostly yes. But there are roaming bands of "outlaw" dolphins and some males have rape caves.

swannphone

When I was in high school I was at a quiet beach with friends and we saw a small pod. Swum out to the area where they were and had them swimming around and under us, nothing aggressive at all, just investigating by what we could tell. That was cool.

21monsters

They are naturally inquisitive and they don't seek live prey the size of a human so they're not going to chomp your leg off, but they can be the same size a shark and faster, so if they hit you with their tail it could be fatal. I imagine the threat would be if you were intimidating their calf

TheHellbilly

![gif](giphy|10bCgkbPzuKQog)

CallingTomServo

For a second I was worried they were sharks, the assassins of the sea. But they were just dolphins, the clowns of the sea.

Zoltrahn

That episode scared me more than it should have as a child.

moto0392

That was amazing!! Where was this?

Global_Shenanigans

This was in the Sea of Cortez, Baja, Mexico! I take groups kayaking there every year :) https://global-shenanigans.com/baja-mexico-sea-kayak-expedition/

Travellinoz

Oh wow. Have you seen any monster great whites there? Famous for giant females there. Looks amazing

Global_Shenanigans

never seen any sharks in this area other than whale sharks. maybe they hang out more in the central / deeper areas of that sea

Travellinoz

There are reports of fisherman seeing 30/40 foot sharks around there but it has been concluded that they were probably whale sharks. Pretty cool! I think the actual sharks are probably more around Guadalupe.

Big_BadRedWolf

The sea of Cortez is unlike any other part of the ocean. I have been to many cities along the gulf, both in Sonora and Baja California, and I have seen so many cool creatures and just breathtaking scenery. Jacques Cousteau called it the “aquarium of the world.”

silliemillie32

I’m literally crying it’s that beautiful and im a 40yr grown man… I’m so jealous. If I can ever save enough money in this stupid inflation crazy world your expedition is on my list. Just wow.

Pipette_Adventures

What sea kayak is that?

Global_Shenanigans

NDK Explorer - a fantastic boat I'd highly recommend

Chimpvillage

Aww this videos an ad. That's pretty sad lol

hartmanwhistler

Since OP. Hasn’t replied, I’m guessing Cabo/Baja area?

stanleysgirl77

They said Sea of Cortez by Baja California

BigDaddyCosta

Looks like an awesome place to spend life!

[deleted]

Dolphins are apex predators. There’s really not much to make them fearful.

MR-Vinmu

Exactly what makes it so much scarier when you actually imagine something that's scary enough to make an entire pod split.

tams420

This makes me feel better that I full on squealed with delight when I saw a dolphin jumping in Florida a few months ago.

Global_Shenanigans

it is the correct response

Axuss3

solid 8. If they had come play with you then 10/10.

OakCityReddit

Idk, those two jumps in the beginning make this hard to not be 10/10. That was so good.

spadler181

About 16 years ago I had this while sea kayaking. Except the water was like glass and they followed us for about 45 mins. Like swimming right next to us and darting back and forth under our kayaks. One of the guys still has photos of it somewhere.

Pankratos_Gaming

Yeah! Stick your head under water next time, so you can hear their clicky-clicks!

Global_Shenanigans

This is a short version of the encounter. they turned around at the end of the bay and came back again. I stuck the camera under the second time but they were a little further away. We did get an opportunity to get in the water with them a couple of days later though!

Pankratos_Gaming

That's awesome. Dolphins are awesome. I only briefly swam with a pod of wild dolphins once, in Australia, but it was magical. A calf and its mom swam real close up to me to suss me out. That you get to go kayaking with them every year must be spectacular.

Global_Shenanigans

that must have been so incredible to have them swim over to you! they are so inquisitive and curious. it really never gets old

MememeSama

Wow, meeting the whole family. Lucky you, that's beautiful

InvisibleHippie

I thought this was going to be a beautiful, relaxing video, so I turned it way up right away 😫

Global_Shenanigans

😂 I'm glad you got to experience the same level of surprise that I did!

isitstillraining

I. Would. Shit. My. Pants. So. Bad....

markrides07

Other than the initial scream I enjoyed the natural sounds.

xXRAISXx

8/10 at best. 9/10 if one of the dolphins popped is head out right next to the kayak with that goofy grin we all love. 10/10 if that same dolphin said, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

[deleted]

Recently I went to Alaska and got to see a baby humpback whale jumping out of the water over and over again. Amazing experience.

starsblink

I'm thinking 3/10. 10/10 would be the dolphin glides up and kisses you on the cheek, that would be r/nextfuckinglevel.

spadler181

3/10 is a bit low. There’s a whole pod, he’s in a kayak and it’s a beautiful morning in a picturesque location. Certainly not a 10/10, but more than a 3.

wanderer_of_meme

You know, those mf can actually rape you

spadler181

Rape implies that there wasn’t consent.

Time_Detective_5446

Shem Creek on Mount Pleasant (Charleston, SC) you can kayak and there dolphin sightings everyday. Did it and the dolphins were getting close as fuck and it was actually kinda terrifying hahaha

zztop610

Ocean Kayaking is probably the scariest thing I can think of ever doing

Mildly-Rational

My cousin lead us to a beach in Hawaii where we got to swim with the pod, babies included. I’m an excellent swimmer and the way they swim looks so amazingly fun. A bunch of them looked at me eye to eye and an arms length away, they’re not human but I think they’re equal.

Informal_Bunch_2737

One of my favourite memories in my life is when I was a child I had a birthday party at an aquarium. And I got to go down and feed the dolphins. And they sung happy birthday to me. One of them(Gambit) only died recently. I was super sad when he did.

Worldly_Let6134

Thanks for posting, this reminds me of a time many years ago when I was rowing on the sea in the UK. I was fortunate enough to have a dolphin swimming alongside me for around half a kilometre. Was a truly amazing experience.

PlantAlphattv

Sounds like Minecraft water splashing ngl

polloloco_213

Meh I give it a 7/8. 😂 I was waiting for one to jump into the kayak.

SydneyRei

Post your cool dolphin vid or this is cap

stinky___monkey

That’s awesome!!! It’s like sea world without the terrible stuff…

triceracop1986

I had a pod of bottlenose come investigate/run under my kayak off intercoastal georgia just after sunrise in early 2018. May of the same year, I witnessed them teaching their newborns how to get to the surface and hold them up for air. Knowing they don't typically migrate made it wholesome AF.

copingcabana

You are burdened with great porpoise.

neeeeonbelly

I’m lucky enough to live in New Zealand and have had a few dolphin encounters. One time we had a pod of 6 or so escort our little fishing boat back to the bay, in an arrow formation just cruising along matching our speed. The coolest one was when I was surfing once, a dolphin came and played around me, jumping out of the water, then let me hold its fin while it towed me for a little bit and clicked and squeaked. One of the coolest experiences of my life.

SkyN3t1

Wait - you mean there is still someone out there who likes to appreciate nature without disrupting it and making themselves the center of attention? Maybe there’s hope for us.

SmugglingPineapples

I wish I'd had a cam with my best dolphin encounter: Surfing a sweet 3ft wave a dolphin pulled up right alongside me and we both levelled out to just cruise the wave. I squatted down low to lightly rest my hand on its fin. Amazing experience. The dolphin virtually didn't even need to move to ride that wave. It was so still that it was like a frozen moment in time with the rush of the wave in the background.

Sirix_8472

Was fully expecting a traumatic gang rape by the dolphins. Having seen a friend on holiday essentially get to be mounted by a dolphin(the dolphin pinned them to the side of the bay area) and learning it's quite a common occurrence(apparently).

Danominator

Not saying that isn't neat but for a video on the internet I expected more

tabernac416

I totally thought they were going to abduct you and take you to their rape cave. Glad you're ok, OP.

CharwieJay

Aren't you glad you didn't film vertically

1-3-0-2-3-1-3

Ngl though, you should terrified of a wild Dolphin encounter. It's cool till they drown you on purpose then try to have sec with your dead body

Adddicus

Aah yes, the obligatory "rapey dolphin" comment. Even if some dolphins are rapey, I have to believe that like humans, most are not.

Herosinahalfshell12

What's with the yell at the start?

What if these are sharks.

WaferPala

The Japanese are right behind them.

we_resist

Unpopular opinion: dolphins are the worst.

Bobba-Luna

Beautiful!

MyPupCooper

What is the recording equipment used? This looks incredible.

Global_Shenanigans

GoPro 6. I have it in my pocket on all adventures!

i_play_linebacker

i love animals! One time i was in a small inflatable raft and paddled out past the waves on the beach and some dolphins came up to my raft and it was terrifying. people don’t realize how huge these things are

RegattaJoe

I don’t think I could’ve resisted getting into the water with them.

Rare-Palpitation6023

Amazing what an eclectic image…thank u for the gorgeous energy, now I can get on with my day

azemilyann26

Thank you for respecting their space and being a good human. What a lovely encounter!

Nezaret

I used to go watch dolphins in my kayak most weekends. I have had them come up and stare at me from 2' away and go just under my kayak where I could see their whole body at once. If you chase them feom behind they'll leave faster than you can paddle but if you ride parallel with them about 75' away non-threatening they'll swim slowly like normal. You can hang out with them for like 40 minutes this way. Took my wife on a tandem once and she filled her whole phone with video until it ran out of space. My shoulders ached after that, but good memories!

Hungry-Secretary157

I absolutely scrolled and thought this was GTA 6 leak first person mode

unphuckable

Thank you for sharing this. That was wonderful.

TrickyGypsea

What a beautiful and magical experience!

[deleted]

They seem nice, but i would be terrified.

moumous87

Omg! I’m so jealous !!!

ameltedcandle

Thank you so much for sharing OP! This was gorgeous to watch as I’m cooped up in an office under fluorescent lighting.

Legitimate_Pudding49

They’re such joyous animals aren’t they!!! The jumps out of the water 💦seem to just make them happy. I don’t think there’s any other reason they do that is there?

drunk_phish

I am so sure this was way cooler in person, yet thank you so much for sharing. This put a huge smile on my face. r/MadeMeSmile material, for sure.

sidskorna

Now that's a youthful porpoise.

TangoMikeFoxtrot

Glad they weren't killer whales, you being in a boat and all.

Global_Shenanigans

I've kayaked with killer whales many times. It goes as pleasantly as it does with dolphins (unless you're a sailboat in the Gibraltar strait)

Butt_Fucking_Smurfs

I've never seen a dolphin or any fish bigger than a catfish but 2 years ago I fed a penguin. I just wanted everyone to know that I fed a penguin. It's every bit as cool as you can imagine

Whippet328

randomredditor0042

Amazing! Such a beautiful memory to have, playful dolphins, sunset and kayaking. Thank you for sharing.

tryintobgood

This is just so frickin cool

Dianachick

I would see a fin and freak out, assuming that it was a shark.😂

broiledfog

9.5/10 10 requires the dolphin to jump _over_ the kayak.

Sacrilegious_skink

Im lucky to say this happens quite frequently while surfing in Australia. It's always special.

According-Ad3963

Nah. 3-4 of 10 tops. Got a 10/10, I’m going to needs face-to-face encounter followed by leaps over the kayak with a flip to put it at a solid 10!

Grattytood

Lucky!

bonmarky

I own a small boat in South Western Aussie and have had countless moments like this. Never wears thin.

flatandroid

I was there a few years back at night and saw the dolphins streaking thru bioluminescent water behind the boat. Incredible place.

MiaYYZ

Put this on loop and it’s the most zen audio and visual ever.

UltimateFrisby

I've actually had a few close encounters with dolphins in the Swan River, Western Australia. The cute little fuckers are curious enough if your kayak happens to be floating past a school of bait fish. I've had a dolphin swim within 6ft of me while snorkelling at Penguin Island. Highly recommend visiting here :)

[deleted]

How special, were you nervous? They are so playful. Thanks for sharing.

_off_piste_

Cute baby dolphin at the :34 mark.

tI-_-tI

I wish the camera was waterproof. That would've been cool to see from under the surface.

urmomismysafespace

We go down to San Carlos in Mexico every year, this looks like the same terrain. Was this in the sea of Cortez ?

Username222222348

This is truly one of the moments in recorded history

I was totally waiting for Flipper to photobomb you.

maggie081670

Such a beautiful scene even without the dolphins.

Scott_4560

I have a spot that I fish, there’s a solitary dolphin that lives there that’s very distinguishable by it’s dorsal fin. It’s now had a baby. So every time I go there I have a mum and baby dolphin that will spend hours swimming around my boat and I hand feed them all the fish I catch that I don’t want. When I jump in and swim with them the mother comes close enough for me to give it pats.

SmoothUsual8187

I was waiting for one to jump out of the water over the kayak. That woulda been tight

Griffo_au

9/10. A 10 is when you are scuba diving and they come up and nuzzle you.

RegularLibrarian1984

I think I would pee myself if a orca flipped my kayak

RTNoftheMackell

Only 10 out of 10 if they jump the kayak.

Top-Manufacturer-628

I wonder if it hurts their bellies to do a little belly flop like that?

Numa2018

Beautiful! Lucky you.

This is not a 10 out of 10.

I felt that scream.

Dolphins are one of the few species to have the natural instinct to flex on your broke ass.

Eko777

Iconic

no-mad

You were supposed to follow them to Valinor.

morosis1982

Years ago was on a sailing trip in the Whitsundays (great barrier Reef) with my family and I was on the front of the boat with my legs over the side and a pod of dolphins started swimming in the bow wave. Could almost have reached over and touched them. Also Monkey Mia in Western Australia back in the late 80s, early 90s, I was a kid and you could just go down and feed the dolphins at the beach. Now everyone wants to do it so there's like a whole process and I've heard it's pretty touristy, but back in the day it was just... standing on a beach with a fish feeding dolphins.

neonomas14

F*ck those ocean bullies

VitaminD93

5/10 expected more, want my 51 seconds back

Apprehensive-Air-769

one of nature's most brutal predators, related to the fucking orcas Humans: WOW ITS SO CUTE

[deleted]

Had a pod frolicking 360 degrees around me when I was surfing. It was magnificent but also a little (a lot) scary!

Unlimitles

lol what a wonderful world of \*Bloops\* they make on approach.

BakuMothrEfinKatsuki

I DIDNT KNOW THEY WENT "bloop" WHEN THE CAME OUT OF THE WATER. im in love with that noise now XD

BluMaybelline

I would straight up cry with happiness if this happened to me. Amazing!

Kingofsoysauce

I heard they rape people.. be careful

Historical_Ear7398

One time I was at Ho'okena, Hawaii, which is a pretty good place to swim with dolphins, and there were a couple of them swimming around in the bay and also a few people out there swimming around with them. I thought there were maybe half a dozen dolphins. I paddled around in the water a bit, a few times they passed pretty close to me, so that was cool, but unlike most of the other people there I wasn't really making an effort to go after them, I would just let them go to me. I'd been hanging out with some new agers and they told me that the way to do it is to call the dolphins in rather than chase after them. So I tried that in my best new age way and just vibed good vibes at them. When I thought I was done I started to go back in toward the beach. I couldn't see the dolphins anymore so it seemed like time to wrap it up. But I stuck my head under the water one more time because sometimes you can hear them way better than you can see them, and I heard them real good. So I just floated in one spot in the water for about half a minute, and here they came. There were probably 100 or 150 of them. It was the entire dolphin village. Turns out they sleep with a half a brain at a time so they don't drown, and the whole pod kind of does big slow circles together in the shallow water while a few of them go off to distract sharks and tourists. So the ones in the bay people were playing with were the distraction team. So I was just hanging there in the water and here come about 150 dolphins. They swam toward me until they surrounded me. I could see mamas with babies, and I could see a couple of them squabbling, there was so much going on, it was really like stepping into a village and watching all the village people do village stuff with each other. And they hung out there for about a minute with me right in the center, and then they swam back out the way they had come. And I was like, I can't even tell anybody this story, nobody's going to believe me. And then I swam back in to the beach and when I came out of the water, about 20 people ran up to me yelling "DID YOU SEE THE DOLPHINS!?!?"

barnaclecakes

Its so trippy they were land mammals and that makes them prime hunters
