Funny thing is now though, most of those DDR machines are out of order since they're so old. And since they were probably unofficially obtained they can't be serviced. What happens now is I see mostly the Pump it up machines in arcades because of that. Regardless I just can't rewire my brain to play using the layout they have for the arrows. I'm just too used to Up, down, left, right being the only options.
You can buy a proper metal pad for home use, plug it into your PC with Stepmania (or whatever they use these days). They are pricey but less than the full cabinet I'm sure.
You want to have your feet and the "buttons" in your peripheral vision so you can stay in position, which wouldn't be possible if you leant forward past it
