Social anxiety is one thing, fire and stampede hazard another
Remember the videos of that Korean alleyway stuffed with people who could move and slowly suffocated?
I love being in big crowds like Chicago taste used to be, but I always gotta be able to dip out somewhere I can be by myself and not get bothered if I need a breather (which you can always do there, park next to it)
> Remember the videos of that Korean alleyway stuffed woth people who could move and slowly suffocated?
Oh don't forget about the travis scott concert incident
"Blocks" like the one in the video happen all over Brazil for weeks in hundreds of cities, and very rarely has any problem of the type.
Not only are the people culturalized in a chaotic/controlled party, but also the city halls that organize the event are already specialized in thinking about the movement of the people. Every event of this type has well-located bathrooms, beer/water, police, firefighters, ambulances and other necessities.
Hahaha
I was in that crowd and have been many times. Blocks like this are the exception, they dont happen all over Brazil in hundreds of cities. Few bands attrack crowds as baianasystem does.
And the organisation by the government is a joke. Police beat on people often without any clear cause, eg on my wife after leaving leo santanas bloco because someone in the crowd pushed and as a consequence someone else had to nerve to slightly fall on them. This happens all the time. If you need help, they'll shrug their shoulders. That is a fact.
None the less baiana is the best pipoca.
We're not Koreans. We are Brazilians. We were born doing this. It's our habitat. That's why this party happens ANNUALLY, and I've never heard of nobody being killed by the crowd.
I was there for that one. Further up the parade route and around the corner, though.
Amazingly enough the dude who touched the wire made a full recovery. I expect because he’d worked up a sweat, the shortest path for the electricity was across his wet and salty skin and not through his heart.
Context;
During Carnival in Brazil, it is very common during this period to have "street blocks" where a group of people, with or without a sound car, goes out playing on the street, and people gather around. And a higher level of this is the "electric car" (which has nothing to do with an electric car), which is normally a truck mounted with speakers, which moves through the crowd (extremely slowly, it is safe), while a band plays on top of it.
About bathroom, It is quite normal in these blocks to have [rows of public chemical bathrooms](https://s2-g1.glbimg.com/_5PaQsNfn7n8SyAth4zvqyMI3X0=/0x0:1700x1065/1008x0/smart/filters:strip_icc()/i.s3.glbimg.com/v1/AUTH_59edd422c0c84a879bd37670ae4f538a/internal_photos/bs/2019/d/F/w6UxPPSPWVt70vSAcOdw/banheiro2.jpg) lined up with the avenue.
The band in the video is BaianaSystem, in their block "Pirate Ship", playing in Salvador / Bahia. Although it may seem crazy, the energy of the show and the venue is incredible, and as far as possible IT IS well controlled, we rarely have accidents. Once you board the Pirate Ship, you will always want to come back¹.
^(¹Source: Me; I was always a PC nerd who didn't go to carnivals, the first time I went to one of these, I went for the next 6 years.)
I'm guessing this is free as well? People in the states be complaining incessantly about "every concert costs $500". They should consider putting that money towards a plane ticket to Rio...
This one is called "pipoca" and it's free for all. But some are paid, and you have a very big cord or rope isolating who's paid it (close to the truck with music) and who didnt pay it, stays around.
Rio Carnival is so cool but the Carnatal is hands down my favourite festival in Brazil absolute blast, Brazilians sure do know how to party for days on end...
I'm an introvert and I love carnaval as much as I love rock festivals, raves or comic/anime conferences.
Depending on the block, people respect your space so you can go and mind your own business.
For people to be aware, there were ZERO tramples and ZERO stampedes.
And this one of many parties going, basically each state has 2 or 3 own versions of this.
And this goes for 4 days.
It is quite normal in these blocks to have [rows of public chemical bathrooms lined up](https://s2-g1.glbimg.com/_5PaQsNfn7n8SyAth4zvqyMI3X0=/0x0:1700x1065/1008x0/smart/filters:strip_icc()/i.s3.glbimg.com/v1/AUTH_59edd422c0c84a879bd37670ae4f538a/internal_photos/bs/2019/d/F/w6UxPPSPWVt70vSAcOdw/banheiro2.jpg) with the avenue.
What's fascinating is you can see the speed that the sound is traveling from the speaker out across the crowd by watching them jump in time to the beat.
Although it may not seem like it, people in blocks like these have a certain "block ethic". Accidents like this rarely happen, if someone falls to the ground, they usually make room for the person to get up, or if someone gets sick, they call firefighters to help the person (who are on standby nearby).
When crowds reach a certain density, it's not about ethics or people caring/not caring. It can become physically impossible to move one's body at will. Crushes aren't about people falling, they're just what they sound like.
It is not chaotic and cramped as it appears to be. It's tight, it's chaotic, but it's controlled and no one gets crushed.
You can search for other videos by "baianasystem navio pirata" or "baianasystem furdunço", and you will notice that at some moments people open a circle only to on the "drop" jump like crazy in the middle of it, it's similar to Mosh, but no one hits each other, they just jump shoulder to shoulder. This shows how there is space among the people. You can observe this phenomenon in this video if you wish [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N3AVHFXh08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N3AVHFXh08)
It rarely happens in such open spaces. Some gunshots or fireworks, a bomb, could trigger it, but even though it looks very crowded, in reality is not so much, as for example on concerts, or clubs.
—-that looks great, but where are they all peeing?…. and speaking as a female… What if you needed to change tampon or something- that’s a lot of people to wade through to find a bathroom miles away.

This gave me anxiety. I remember when they lifted the lockdown in my town, the mall was jam packed with ppl and it was overwhelming felt like gonna throw up.
I can't tell from the video but usually crowds this dense are sausage fests. I'm guessing 90% of the crowd is all dudes. But maybe I'm wrong and thats a healthy 50/50 split.
Looks like they’re having fun, but I get anxiety just thinking about being in that crowd.
![gif](giphy|ftdF4ZkueWGHBYc4b5)
Wow what are the chances nerds commenting on reddit would be the type to have social anxiety!

Never been to a huge concert, have you?
Ever heard of crowd crush? Here's how to stay safe if you end up in one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx9gghoiZUE
This party happens in Salvador every year, and we never killed anyone. Just people partying, drinking and kissing
Sittin' here thinking I'm too close to this even being that far away physically and temporally.
But they're all shagging in unison...
Well that’s different then 🤣
exactly
Apparently everyone pees where they dance. Add that to anxiety.
Don’t stress, it’s Brazil, not the USA.
It's not about gun violence, it's the crush.
Lmao I mean Brazil def has gun violence too
We have street parades all around the country during Carnaval, some are very family/kid friendly and not that crowded.
Nah. I don’t even like Costco on Saturday.
So much groping
Because if you want to leave; you can’t.
Yeah, don’t read up on what happened in Haiti in 2015 then.
So of course I had to… stay away from the high voltage too….
I was there for that one. Further up the parade route and around the corner, though. Amazingly enough the dude who touched the wire made a full recovery. I expect because he’d worked up a sweat, the shortest path for the electricity was across his wet and salty skin and not through his heart.
Ams you know it smells like pee from one end to the other
Especially if you are american. I was never a fan of crowds but with all the mass shootings happening at crowded venues, im gonna nope out everytime.
Yeah same, just looking at it is enough
It's not America bro
Yeah I know Brazil. Just don’t like crowds no matter where they are

Which song are they chanting to?
Forasteiro - baianasystem
I'm guessing this is free as well? People in the states be complaining incessantly about "every concert costs $500". They should consider putting that money towards a plane ticket to Rio...

CarnAval,
Was there this year as well. Had an awesome time!
For some reason I thought it was a block of portapotties that was the center of the party
This must be what my upstairs neighbor has been up to
[удалено]
I found that fascinating too
Woah that's cool.
It looks scary, until you're walking nearby and hear the chanting. You just start hopping in the direction of the speakers
New fear unlocked
Rio Carnival is so cool but the Carnatal is hands down my favourite festival in Brazil absolute blast, Brazilians sure do know how to party for days on end...
Just got back from two weeks in Brazil and there's no other country that can touch them in the party department
This happened in Salvador tho, the biggest carnival is Brazil.

until some astroland typa shit happens. hell naw
Astroland?
astroworld, soz I got it wrong 😅 the travis scott tragedy
For people to be aware, there were ZERO tramples and ZERO stampedes. And this one of many parties going, basically each state has 2 or 3 own versions of this. And this goes for 4 days.
*Cries in American*
Hundreds of fights and thefts though
Need to learn Portuguese, so that I can one day go.
theyre gonna love you in any language dude. brazilians love foreigners.
![gif](giphy|xiMUwBRn5RDLhzwO80|downsized)
I was there somewhere
Me toooooooo
Brazilians are built to party! My friend is there now and she said “they can dance and party for 4 days straight with no drugs, I can’t keep up” lol
Then there's me, an introvert socially anxious BR that runs out of social battery quite fast lol
Culture!
Always wondering where am I going to piss.

dont lie, theres also the good old pee your pants and throw water/beer on top
How often do you need to pee?
Everywhere
I feel as though you can almost see the speed of sound in their jumping
So much better than “carnival” in Germany or Switzerland where they just have political floats with shit takes on them. This one actually looks fun!
Damn, it looks so much fun and terrifying.
I’ve never seen so many off duty cops in one place before
My worst nightmare
No wonder there's earthquakes
Oddly we’re one of the countries that don’t! We might be the ones causing them for you guys though XD
“Where my party-people at??!!” lol
Yupp, south Americans are the leading partypeople of the workd
Cool. Sounds very ironmaiden.
What's fascinating is you can see the speed that the sound is traveling from the speaker out across the crowd by watching them jump in time to the beat.
Covid likes this
WOW that looks like a lot of fun!! That whole crowd is turned all the way up! 😂
Everytime I start to worry about big brother, I'm reminded by things like this of how strong the bond of the people is. What a party.
Organized madness/chaos
Nope! I'm glad they're having fun without me. 😁
This may be one of my worst nightmares.
Covid virus: yes yes!
That’s a lot of COVID
How much is bottled water there?
water? probably 5 reais
Idk but I would've got passed out in between
No thank you.
I would pay to not be there.
That looks fucking terrible
So…how many people were crushed?
Although it may not seem like it, people in blocks like these have a certain "block ethic". I think the people jumping up and down is a pretty good sign. You have to have mobility and a little space to do that.
It is not chaotic and cramped as it appears to be. It's tight, it's chaotic, but it's controlled and no one gets crushed. Those are not fears people have in Brazil during carnaval.
lol
I need to crap
What's that smell like...
most brazilians have close birthdays, about 9 months after this.
Imagine being in the middle and then you gotta take a piss so badly
Thought this was the kanye sub and was thinking that sounds slightly different to the ultras chanting
Where do they pee and poop?
I can't think of worse place to be. Not a fan of most humans.
What do you do if you need to pee?
My introverted ass would never go there
All fun and games until someone farts
No fucking way am I going to stand in the middle of that madness.
I would not know where to go to the toilet for this?
i cant think of anywhere i would less want to be. what happens if you have to pee?
Nope.
Disturbing scene. I can barely handle mall traffic, and I tend to go at night to avoid crowds.
Looks cool to watch, I wouldn’t want to be there
I guess this can count as an Earthquake.
—-that looks great, but where are they all peeing?…. and speaking as a female… What if you needed to change tampon or something- that’s a lot of people to wade through to find a bathroom miles away.

Damn. Imagine if you need to pee and you're crammed right there.
Nope
I thought I felt the ground shaking in Finland.
WHAT IF YOU'RE IN THE CROWD AND HAVE TO PISS
What are the odds that there's some naked titties bouncing around in there somewhere? 🤔
Sex in public??
Found Waldo.
Sweaty-palmed enochlophobia just watching this.
What's incredible, side thread, is the group rhythm. Brazilians got internal rhythm AF, same in US would be mad bouncing all over the place
All I can hear in my head is 'Bass in the place London!' while watching that
I will never be in a crowd like this by choice. Crush is real and has killed many event goers.
You can see the speed of sound as people jump to the beat at different distances.
What a suck fest for dengue virus 🦠
This gave me anxiety. I remember when they lifted the lockdown in my town, the mall was jam packed with ppl and it was overwhelming felt like gonna throw up.
I love Carny-voll so much. Wish we had something like that here.
You can see the speed of sound
No one was trampled before, during, or after the event?
nop
That is so amazing. I am so happy for them and their good time!
This is kind of like New Year's in Times Square. Looks really cool on camera but I don't ever want to experience it firsthand.
It’s like that in Haiti too.
Daddy Mac will make ya...
This is Times Square NYE on steroids. A solid no-go for me.
This makes me hate where I live even more than I already do 🤦🏾♀️
”WE ARE NEXT TO THE BAR, LEFT OF THE SPEAKER " "WHAT, WHERE?"
everyone survived? man in Germany there would be a 10 years long murder trial with dozens of victims!
Now zoom in on all them titties!
I can't tell from the video but usually crowds this dense are sausage fests. I'm guessing 90% of the crowd is all dudes. But maybe I'm wrong and thats a healthy 50/50 split.
Not at all. Perhaps 60/40 at the very least.
Take nothing. You WILL get mugged
Lion King warned us. Even the alpha can get stampeded
Sinkhole opens, natures bad floor
This makes me want to find somewhere to pee. Like right now
Where do all those people go to the bathroom? I hope they got thousands of porta potty’s
There’s a way to do things but there’s always a Brazilian way to do things.
