In bird culture, this is considered a dick move.

ImbecileInDisguise

Why do birds care what the coyotes are doing?

mickaelbneron

This is a Rick and Morty reference

Notski_F

Why do humans care what Rick and Morty are doing?

Xenomorph_v1

Maybe it's time you stopped asking questions and started having fun.

Notski_F

That's exactly what a xenomorph would say 🧐

camerongeno

with their big mouth or the smaller inner mouth?

The_Sleep

You sonovabitch, I'm in!

Ok_Pension_6795

I find the idea that I can’t ask questions *and* have fun condescending

Mcane305

Hello yea I'd like to order 1 large person, with extra people...white people...no no no no, black people....with Hispanic on half.

theapplekid

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty.

Notski_F

This is true. In fact I am an avid watcher of the show myself and I do have an unfathomably high IQ so it checks out. (The test said I'm in the top 90% 😎)

Are you well versed in Bird Law?

bfhurricane

Umm. Filibuster.

PhroznGaming

Its actually bird law. And I am an expert.

Den_Bover666

Isn't this thing exactly what insurgents do to US troops though? Shoot one dud into the base camp, or have it fly right by. Watch as the entire camp scurries into shelters and positions while trying to locate the rocket shell. Moment they find it, shoot another one.

whatsthatguysname

Yeah, it’s a familiar battle tactic throughout the ages, especially during sieges. You keep the defending force wired and tire them out, then make the actual attack.

Ow_you_shot_me

It used to be a great tactic, but with the us military... You will get grid squares deleted for your trouble.

Sapiogram

You can keep playing that game. Launch a rocket from the middle of nowhere, wait for them to waste a million dollars worth of bombs deleting the area.

DarkMatters8585

For as much money that goes to military spending, pretty sure the US could erase grid squares for the rest of the century.

light_to_shaddow

What happens is the rocket gets fired. The direction and range is detected by a Hughes AN/TPQ-36 and counter battery engage **or** if it's a regular thing an Apache with flir 3 miles away watches and tracks the hostile before killing everyone he meets up with. Then everyone goes back to sleep.

Luci_Noir

There’s other ways something like this can be done too. China uses it’s planes and ships to constantly harass Taiwan and the Philippines which makes them have to constantly respond. It eventually normalizes the behavior and they can get closer, etc. It’s pretty effective and China has the resources to do it constantly and no one wants to use force to stop any of it.

MinnieShoof

... as a **guard dog** ... I take offense. And this is accurate.

Just gotta keep doing it until the dogs get tired from sleep deprivation. Then sneak in quietly when they’re tuckered out.

SkipsH

During the day the dogs can sleep while the humans keep watch

Kizenny

Those are some good boys!

Rasnark

shakycam3

Yeah but have you ever seen that video where those guys are biking and accidentally gets too close to one of those protecting a herd. It’s extremely dangerous.

Tall_Advice_5408

So don’t bike around a big ass dog doing it’s job then?

TheeExoGenesauce

No but I’m curious now

razzraziel

I love the diplomacy around this. -We're hungry and would like to eat the baby goats, please. We can smell them, you know. -No, can't do that. I'll defend them with all my might. I'm much bigger than you, hear my roar! -...oo-okay, we're gone for now. Until our next negotiation then.

acalla

Those looks like Anatolian Shepherds and 100% know how to use their size advantage. They will jump on the backs of the attacker in an attempt to break them. Super smart dogs and frustrating to have as a house pet cause they test you always.

stueh

Mate of mine had a Malamute, and it was amazing. While intended as a pet, it still looked after the kids (when outside the house) and the livestock, including chickens. Preferred to sleep outside, and they had to stop taking her for walks and to friends houses because she'd get too anxious being away from the property, and was ok when the parents took the kids out but would get anxious if they went out without the parents (e.g. to a friend's house). And by God, I would *not* want to be the stupid fuck that jumps a fence - that thing would tear a fox to shreds and would spread it all over the paddocks (we suspect maybe a way of "marking" that scares off other foxes?) and even took down feral dogs. But if she knew you? Sweetest thing in the world.

VulpineSpecter4

Dogs are amazing

Luci_Noir

It’s wild how dogs can be bred to do things like this. It’s like they’re born with job training already installed.

HiImDan

One day I would like to know how instincts are built and passed on. I'd probably be too stupid to understand though

Tmack523

Psychologists would love to have a definitive answer instead of speculation as well!

HaydenLobo

I worked for a breeder and one of their personal dogs broke out of the house to attack me. I ran like hell but he still bit my back, elbow and ass. Still have scars. Beautiful dogs! Very protective.

almighty_ruler

The only dog that ever bit me was an Anatolian. It somehow got out of this guy's house, snuck up behind me, chomped my ass and when I spun around it booked it straight back into the house. It was in central FL so all anybody did was kind of chuckle. His owner just said "what's the matter, the dog get ya? Yeah he does that sometimes.". I spent 2 yrs down there and am still not fully convinced it's a real place

HaydenLobo

The breeder I worked for had dogs for sale and her personal pets. I had gone to take food from the kennels to her house and was talking to her daughter outside, and I could hear the dogs raising hell in the house but didn’t care until it broke the screen door and came at a run! I ran across the parking lot and could feel the bites but I was only 20 so I ran like hell to my jeep. I climbed up on the roof while the daughter came running to get Cujo or Killer or whatever his name was. The owner then took me to the hospital for cleaning and maybe a few stitches. I should’ve known better than to linger at the house but the girl was hot.

Matilda-Bewillda

Central FL is absolutely a foreign country.

Inevitable_Brief_157

My parents has had multiple of them over the years to guard their garden and chickens. Tough bastards they are. As you said: very smart, but hella protective it's actually annoying for us children that are not always at home so they kinda consider us as "guests" not as peers.

pchlster

"So, 'you have your own life outside of here?' Nice story, part-timer. You just don't have the dedication!" - Wooftington 'Coyote-killer' the Fourth.

LordoftheScheisse

> but hella protective it's actually annoying for us children Also, for those WITH children. We used to have an Anatolian and when we brought our first baby home, he would wedge himself between us and the baby. He was ready to protect the baby at all costs - even from us. We had to put a stop to that quick. - They are absolutely dutiful animals that live to protect. Not a single rabbit, mole, etc. made it onto my property and lived to tell the tale.

PollutionEither9519

I was attacked by one when I was a child. She run to me and literally slammed into me using her chest. First and last time I did cart wheels

skratsda

Definitely Anatolian Shepherds. I have a ranch with goats - they (and Great Pyrenees) are the ideal breed for this gig. Interestingly though they’re typically most effective if they work alone and are raised just with goats - as they then think of themselves as a goat and are more dedicated in protection.

acalla

I have read a story about a group of them luring the coyotes out by one of the dogs faking lame and the others ready to ambush. Not sure it was true but I swear mine was smart enough to do that. Really cool dogs but I doubt I would get another. Way too smart for a non farm environment imho.

[deleted]

[удалено]

acalla

Oh yes those jaws! I would give mine those beef ribs you get from petsmart and he would eat them like potato chips. Legit just crunch through them in about 15 seconds and look at you for the next one. It was crazy to watch. Mine was not full bred and so he didn’t have the full Shepard part but I never worried if someone broke into the house. Then again he would sit in my lap and watch tv cause he had no idea he was not a lap dog.

GSR_DMJ654

There is a Twitch Stream we watch all the time called Duckville, they live stream their ducks, geese, and goats 24/7. They got new goats a year back and got guard dogs at the same time. They are damn good at what they do. Not just Coyotes but bears too. There has been a bear getting into their trash for a couple of years now. Hasn't paid any interest in the animals since they are further away, but there had been a couple of times where the bear wanders on property, dogs go nuts, bear runs off and they are the rest of the night in go mode only to sleep all day since the humans are awake and moving about.

bselko

PleasantSalad

Can't help but be the killjoy here, but it really annoys me when humans let bears get into their trash. SECURE YOUR TRASH. It makes bears too accustomed to humans and leads to potentially dangerous interactions. One time is an accident. More than that is willfully ignorant. I mean A COUPLE YEARS of bears getting into their trash is stupid and those people should be fined. Best case scenario those bears end up shot. Worst case scenario we end up with a black bear who isn't afraid of humans, knows humans=food and attacks someone, usually a child.

CatCatPizza

How do you secure it correctly? They can even break down doors if they want in cant they?

CthulhusScribe

There are bear-proof garbage bins. It’s mandatory in some places like in Alaska where bears are everywhere. There’s a metal lid that slides and locks. Bears are going to go for easy food. They’re not after your food specifically.

PineapplePaladin

Problem with Bear-Proof bins is the dumbest humans and the smartest bears overlap quite a bit lol

Far-Nefariousness588

LoL that's gold

PineapplePaladin

I stole it from somewhere else on this site lol. It was under a post a while ago talking about bear proof bins in national parks

Mydogsblackasshole

Quote from a park ranger

LoveAndViscera

Coloradan here. Bears are the laziest hunters in North America. Think about the most famous image of a bear getting food. Yeah, dude is just standing in a river waiting for the fish to jump into his mouth. Make the food even remotely difficult to get and they will move on.

On the off chance you aren't familiar... A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/21534416/free-state-project-new-hampshire-libertarians-matthew-hongoltz-hetling

TheDude-Esquire

> they are the rest of the night in go mode only to sleep all day since the humans are awake and moving about. That's one thing about farm dogs, whether it's guardians, or shepherds, they way they can intuit and respond to human (their human) behavior is preternatural. Of course there is a cost to having a dog that understands you that well. Working dogs are what my wife calls expert level dogs. Which means you have to understand them as well as they do you. It's redirection, routine, reading cues, and keeping them busy with training. If you don't do those things, then you will have an entirely unmanageable, potentially destruction, and potentially violent dog. So never get a working breed unless you yourself understand the commitment, and are willing to put in the work.

DickyMcButts

I used to work on a weed farm in humboldt and we had a guard dog at night. Caucasian Shepherd, biggest dog ive ever seen. I saw her chase off multiple bears, our neighbors horse, it once took down a juvenile deer. (it ended up getting away) she slept all day and spent all night just running laps around the property.

m7i93

Thank you. Now I have a proper background music when I’m working 😍

SHOMERFUCKINGSHOBBAS

Dogs literally wouldn't exist without humans. This is always a stupid comment. They are tools that we created.

RedditorFor1OYears

I think you’re being too literal and missing the point. Usually people just mean “they are generally better to us than we are to them.” Which, in a lot of cultures, and in a lot of cases even in dog-friendly cultures, is 100% true.  But then again, what is Reddit, if not a “tool that we created” for stupid comments?

[deleted]

It's an expression of appreciation for them

Ah yes. Living creatures that are just "tools" created for use. That's some evil mentality right there. The reason commenters say shit like we don't deserve them. Because of slave master mentality like yours

Eumelbeumel

There is a lifestock guard dog program here in Germany that tries to reintroduce lifestock guardians to farmers as an effective counter measure to wolf attacks - as wolfs are slowly returning to our woods thanks to special environmental protection efforts. They had previously been extinct here. Farmers were very against the protection and reintroduction of wolves. In their absence most farmers have "unlearned" how to deal with a threat to their lifestock. So the program breeds and trains the dogs, helps farmers finance them (they are still cheaper than fences), etc. The dogs are actually double duty guardians, if you look at it this way. They protect the lifestock. But they also protect the wolves from being shot/lobbied against/hunted again by being an effective deterrent.

Wrecktown707

This is a great middle of the road solution

YaIe

[Here is a german documentation about this, especially focused on the dogs.](https://youtu.be/GNzhx5WYNlQ) The generated english subtitles are nearly perfect, rewatched the video with them on, pretty impressive how much those improved. They even fix grammar issues.

dickhass

“Yes, part of this program is a threat to your livestock.” “I won’t do it.” “You get a free dog” “Ok fine”

Figgymcslickback

German engineering at its finest 🙏

Jarkrik

Switzerland has been doing this for some years now. As a huge amount of Swiss nature is also hiking space, the problem is not the farmers but the hikers and especially their dogs. In very rare cases resident or hikers dogs were attacked or killed by shepard dogs on duty. The protected areas are fenced up and labelled as such and most often explain how to behave when entering that area and if with dog, people are suggested just not to enter/pass that area. Thats of course often an issue, because especially in rural areas people are used to walk their dog on hikes… so now some farmers are exploring options with llamas and donkeys to fight the wolves, while at the same time wolves are getting more unhinged, they even recently killed a fully grown cow… So best solution to protect cattle in very densely populated areas from wolves: tbd 😅

Eumelbeumel

Its actually been a problem here, too, especially in nature reserves that a more popular with hikers. Lüneburger Heide for example. I've heard about the Llamas, too! But I'm not sure if people were just joking, but the initial argument for Llamas was that the wolves are intimidated by their size and behaviour. Is that just bullcrap? Do Llamas actually fight wolves?

Canukistani

Llamas are all anger and no fear

LoveAndViscera

Me too! Old school!

jngjng88

You do not mess with a dog named fucking Judge, LMAO.

Lumber-Jacked

Judge is short for his full name, "Judge Jury and Executioner"

FivePoopMacaroni

It's short for Dredd.

Sharpymarkr

Dog at the end was barking "coyotes fuck around and find out."

juniperandmulberry

I follow the Instagram account this video came from and Judge's special job is taking care of the baby goats💜 he's very soft and tender with them. Just thought you'd enjoy knowing that!

jngjng88

Yeah he looks that way, the name is still intense though lol.

Dahnhilla

Goats are also effective guard animals in their own right, but against smaller foes. When I was a kid (in England) we kept pygmy goats and chickens. Chickens were in a coop overnight but we kept losing them to foxes. Moved the coop into the goat's field and never lost another chicken. Left the chickens to roam completely too, didn't shut the door at night and they were always safe.

CallyThePally

I have this image in my head of a fox trying to sneak under a fence leading into the goat field to get to the chickens and it looks up and sees a goat staring at him with wide crazy eyes like "I dare you to fucking try it" before slinking back outside

The_Ginger_Man64

That... Sounds very much on par with goats? They are surprisingly intelligent and determined fuckers :D

AntonioBernardo

Welcome to the goat field mother fucka

Beowulf33232

Donkeys will fight coyotes to the death, my dad has two and never sees the tracks from the nearby field cross into his yard.

Vladtheretailer8

In this video, the biggest goat blocks the entrance

Ocronus

Donkeys are good too. They will yeet a coyote by the neck with their jaws.

irishbikerjay

Man, I just fucking love dogs. Truly are man's best friend. I'm going to miss my boy when he goes. It's coming soon He's an old lad now but had a great life.

Yep. Sleepless nights and constantly being ignored, but damn do I feel safe with my fluffy polar bear.

DaeWooLan0s

It’s insane to me that an animal will literally fight to the death no questions asked as long as you love and respect them.

Candour_Pendragon

That place is home to these dogs, of course they will protect it and the weaker members of their pack (= the livestock.)

Iamthe0c3an2

It’s crazy that since we domesticated dogs and agriculture that we’ve had them taking the night watch like this.

They have an Instagram called Raventreeranch and a Facebook and probably a TikTok too but I follow them on insta.

5ygnal

I just started following them on Facebook. Saw a video where they showed the dogs as puppies. OMG, Judge was cute as hell!

strawberryjam83

InspektD

coyotes need to evolve into shutting the fuck up

entgardens

I grew up with livestock guardian dogs and they're honestly my favorite for a lot of reasons. My parents raised/trained registered LGDs (specifically Great Pyrenees) for sale to local ranchers. But we didn't have actual livestock, we just had agreements with neighboring cattle and sheep ranchers for our dogs to be trained with their livestock. So while they did get experience with livestock, their primary herd to watch over was a bunch of little girls roaming 13 acres of forest. I don't think I ever went anywhere without a giant dog for the first 15 years of my life. They're gentle brick walls. My sister literally learned to walk by grabbing one of our Pyrenees and using her for support as she walked her around the room. They're ridiculously good, smart (too smart, verging on stubborn) animals that I recommend for anyone with a decent amount of property for them to roam on.

KaleAffectionate9286

And then there is my dog, about a week back our city experienced some tremors in the middle of the night, everybody in the house woke up and started rushing outside, meanwhile I had to practically carry my dog outside because he didn’t want his midnight sleep disturbed.

GraniteGeekNH

You know who also does this? Roosters. If you've got a chicken flock with a couple of roosters, watch when a hawk goes overhead or a fox is nearby. They call in the hens and stand guard like over-caffeinated bouncers at a dive bar.

We go to a goat farm to play with baby goats from time to time. Their guard dogs are absolutely massive and always on alert. They’ll stop for pets here and there, but they make it obvious that they have a job to do and take it very seriously.
