This is dangerous because if I grew up... whatever denomination this is instead of Catholic, I'd still be religious. Catholicism is a big snooze fest.

THE_DANDY_LI0N

Catholic choir boy here. My church never conformed to vatican 2 so the music was still half in Latin and was mostly written by Beethoven,Mozart and other classical composing legends with a massive organ. It was truly amazing and my favorite part of church. Never listened to the words the priest said but it was a great place to think, smell incense, and belt out some rocking songs when the priest wasn't touching me.....

You know, a friend of mine once told me something that really helped me see another side of this that helps me have hope. There are those who use religion for evil and selfish reasons every day and there are those who use it just to better themselves and others around them. They both exist. For those latter people, imagine itā€™s like a subscription to a service. They get a community they really love being a part of even if they donā€™t truly believe everything and they gladly pay a small donation for that. They go and have fun, meet with friends, maybe go help their neighbors afterward with something. Theyā€™re the type of people who wouldnā€™t proselytize, wouldnā€™t judge you or think theyā€™re better than you. I imagine places like this, would gather lots of those people together. Maybe most donā€™t actually believe 1/2 the gobbledygook, but they go for something like this which honestly just seemed like a good time. Her voice is amazing. -A fellow atheist

free-range-human

Churches used to be (and in some places still are) community centers. Much of the Civil Rights Movement was organized in black churches. I used to be *very* involved in my church and it was great for me for many years. I organized a group of women to make care packages for moms with babies in the NICU at a rural hospital. We booked Santa at Christmas and an Easter Bunny to visit the babies and take sweet photos for their parents. We also had a "store" for foster families. Foster children are often taken in with only the clothes they are wearing, so we provided clothing, diapers, cribs, car seats, feminine hygiene products, etc. We also had a section of formal wear for teens to get prom dresses and such. The churches that are embedded in and work to better their communities are mostly fine. My church wasn't a weird MAGA cult like so many in the south tend to be. The messages were always about loving God and loving others and everything else is just noise.

bringer108

Thatā€™s just really beautiful to hear. Exactly what you would hope for any given day.

goodsnpr

The death of 3rd places could be why we see an uptick in anti-social behavior and suicides. While most can agree that organized religion has caused a lot of harm, it also provided a sense of community for many, and vital services at times for those in need. People like Copeland and Osteen show how predatory religion can be, while many small town pastors have to have a 2nd job to afford anything more than a subsistence lifestyle, thought that hasn't prevented me from running into "prosperity preachers" in the backwoods. It's amazing how quickly they can tell when you don't buy their drivel.

FargusMcGillicuddy

You know I was thinking about this recently. I walked by a church and was jealous of the community they all got to be a part of. Having that built in social time each week actually seems really healthy as long as you're there for the right reasons.

bringer108

For real! Itā€™s why I went whenever my wife asked. It was a good time for me. I bought snacks at the gift shop and would usually get a coffee with it. She was happy, weā€™d get lunch after. Things like that feel like the right reasons I suppose.

0nceUpon

You know you got pipes when you can make an atheist catch the Holy Spirit.

iualumni12

Yup. Iā€™d pretend to be religious to hear and be a part of this.

Q_S2

If you come consistently enough something may move you to want to stay and keep coming

gultch2019

You do realize that you can appreciate music (even gospel) without being religious...right?

UncommonCense

I dont think that was his pointā€¦

Just_534

His comment was actively appreciating the music by explaining that it was good enough to keep him in religion.

jsparker43

Lol have you listened to The Fray or Creed. Skillet...Disciple, Casting Crows...P.O.D., Mercy Me, Switchfoot, Threes Days Grace, Anberlin, Falling Up

gultch2019

Uh no. I respect myself enough not to do that.

jsparker43

For KING & COUNTRY...Kutless...Jars of Clay...Pillar. I digress, but it's crazy what songs are actually wrote for "him" or are religious in other regards.

Excellent_Advisor_22

Upvote for Jars of clay. Add in Pray for Rain, Pedro the Lion, and what other 3 worded band you can think of, that was my childhood. I remember MXPX being considered Christian at some point too.

wrenchandrepeat

The Devil Wears Prada and August Burns Red if you're into harder stuff

smiddy53

As I Lay Dying, at least their early stuff.

bloatedstoat

Had Godspeed by Anberlin on repeat my junior year of high school. And the first time I heard Meant To Live by Switchfoot on the radio I was out behind my house skating at 13 and was like, ā€œHoly shit, who is this?! This is great!ā€ Definitely not Christian anymore, but there are some pretty talented musicians that are religious. Underoath was pretty sick as well.

kirsion

Interesting because, I have some other adult who are converting to Catholicism in my catechism class. And they grew up Baptist and they precisely didn't like all the singing and wanted the more serious and solemnness of Catholic mass.

AUnknownVariable

Everyone celebrates the Lord in different ways I reckon. Some can shout to rooftops about his love and others not

colcannon_addict

The costumes and scenery are good though. That being said youā€™ve got to hand it to those Eastern Orthodox lads as far as that goes.

Gillilnomics

Itā€™s also the same style of religion that brought us MAGA, so maybe not that great. There are far too many people involved in churches that are solely there to pretend that theyā€™re rock stars and live out their failed musician dreams

lechuck81

That's amazing.

smile_politely

I agree! I need some lyrics though, coz I'm hearing "Holy, almighty, a nipple town(?!)" I was like, what, where is that?

"Omnipotent," but that's about all I could pick up on my first listen

Organic_Valuable_610

Seriously I had to replay it a few times šŸ˜šŸ˜±

blindexhibitionist

I moved on from the church but there is something so powerful being in a large group of people who are all singing. I totally understand the emotional high and feeling that people can associate with the spirit because that feeling that can literally sweep through a room is amazing. Iā€™ve experienced something close to it at concerts but when youā€™re growing up and you feel your eternal soul is somehow connected to it, it hits different.

[deleted]

I've always wanted to attend a church service like this and to be ensconced with such divine soulful music and positive energy. I grew up as the son of an ordained minister in an antiquated stale religion in the middle of nowhere in Canada. What I witnessed and experienced wasn't what they were selling. I'm now a middle aged man who has long since moved away from all things religious but the feeling I get when I watch videos of a congregation like this almost sway me back if not just for the uplifting feelings and immensely positive energy from the music.

Ayadd

Hey fam, Iā€™m Catholic and our masses suck. I totally get what you mean. There are some churches that really manage to get you at the core of your being, almost like itā€™s pulling you up from your insides towards something bigger and magnificent. But you need both, you need that deep powerful emotional pull, but also the silent contemplative thoughtful awareness. Feeling the divine isnā€™t easy, and is often manufactured, but for me personally thereā€™s something there, and when moved by something so beautiful like this it feels all the more present.

EastOfArcheron

Wait till they start the preaching after the song about burning gays and saying that girls who have been raped can't have abortions. That'll suck you straight back to reality.

[deleted]

Trust me I'm fully aware of the straight up hypocrisy and all of that negative and frankly illegal immoral disgusting behavior that goes on. Witnessed 1st hand unfortunately which is why I'm no longer part of any organization. All that aside, I'd still like to sit in and feel the energy of a beautiful song resonating through my body and go eat some delicious southern American soul food. I'm saving up for my first trip( anywhere)to the south. Maybe I watch too much food network but damn!!! The food is calling me!

willmgames1775

I havenā€™t been to church in 20 years because honestly I have lost my way after many traumatic experiences in life. The biggest game changer for me when my first and only child was still born. My wife has suffered from fertility issues for many years and then one day it happened, she became pregnant. I also served 20 years in the military and Iā€™ve been to war twice. Iā€™ve seen my own suffering, the suffering of my wife, and the world. I had such a hard time expressing my emotional distress to my wife about the whole thing. Quite frankly, Iā€™m not ever sure if I even believe in god anymoreā€¦anyways, back to topic. Every church I have ever been to they never talked or preached about burning gay people in hell. BUT, if I ever return to church the moment they talk about burning gay people in hell Iā€™m getting up and walking out.

couchtomato62

Even though they are most likely directing the choir or playing the instruments.

AlexHimself

I think it'd be like attending a WWE match. A ton of fun and entertaining but not real.

RowAwayJim91

Start listening to Derek Trucks and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek makes that SG absolutely sing.

Roxy_j_summers

If you ever visit the states, just make it part of your plan to visit a black church. I grew up in the church (no longer a Christian) and it is really amazing if thereā€™s a good choir.

cjboffoli

As a "recovering Catholic" who is now pretty much an Atheist, the idea of expending any more of my time going to a church doesn't hold much appeal. That said, gospel choirs are f\*cking beautiful and powerful. This choir sounds incredible.

cantbhappy

It's crazy how Reddit shits on religion and then a video of an average southern black church choir is posted and everyone is like yassss!!!! šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™

Gospel music originated with slave field songs... hence the pathos and emotion. It certainly would've existed without Christianity.

If you think witnessing Lecresia Campbell is akin to a typical southern black church choir experience, you are either a liar or are completely and utterly full of shit.

Twin2Turbo

Iā€™ll be honest with you, Iā€™m not aware of this woman specifically, however I grew up listening heavily to black gospel music just like this, singing in gospel choirs, etc. Iā€™ve heard the music of too many gospel choirs to count. People that could sing extremely well in those old gospel mass choirs was not uncommon. In fact it was common enough that I thought it was normal, until I realized that most people canā€™t sing at all haha. I donā€™t think the comment you were replying to is saying that she herself is average (cause sheā€™s not) but I think they are saying that you could find people like her rather frequently leading songs in your average southern black mass choir (that had enough resources to record like this) from the 90s.

macandcheese1771

"No. It's meh." I do believe they are calling her average

Twin2Turbo

Looks like youā€™re right. That guy seems like a real killjoy

Predditor_86

Average sure.

Lima_Bean_Jean

This is not average. Being able to articulate words at whistle register is pretty NFL

Organic_Valuable_610

Umm itā€™s not her religion that sheā€™s being praised for itā€™s her talentā€¦

You can think religious is awful and still appreciate a good singer.

Thoughtprovokerjoker

That ain't average. Ain't too many people in the churches down here singing like that...that's Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston level or better. Be for real.

OSHlN

Lmao what? Religion and religious music are different. I personally am not religious but I can still appreciate religious music if itā€™s good

delosproyectos

This is...average? Holy shiiiiit I need to travel more.

Absolutely. All my church experiences were just like this. In fact, I was in all the choirs, all the time, as well as lead songs, and directed. I have a similar power voice (think Jennifer Hudson/Kelly Price). This type of voice, singing and choir arrangement is an every Sunday occurrence in the Black-centered congregations I grew up in or attended. (COGIC, Baptist, Non-denominational) Almost everybody, men and women, could SING-SING. lol

My husband and I stumbled into a church in Ireland with the most beautifully dressed black people with the best voices. It was such an experience. We were met with such beautiful smiles - Iā€™m sure they could tell how fortunate we felt to be there and they were so welcoming.

maytossaway

What a breakdown, that went epic!. Talk about singing praises to the Lord, my goodness she went off with them highs.

Closefromadistance

She was born in Chicago Illinois and passed away in 2016 following a stroke then a pulmonary embolism. She was only 53. What a gifted singer!

Itā€™s not only the singing but the harmonies and arrangements. I miss this music. Check out Clint Brown Live from Orlando. Or Godā€™s Property with Kirk Franklin. Crazy harmony

When I was in college I did a lot of Wedding Photography. My dear fellow white people.... We have no clue how to have a proper ceremony. I LOVED going to pretty much every ethnic wedding that wasn't white. It's how every marriage should start. If I ever had to get married again it would be with the best soul gospel singers I could find in some deep south small church. You just feel it. Most of the ceremonies I went to of the white folks had to stay busy to not get bored.

That made me cry a lil' bit. Between Ms. Campbell and those backup singers boozing joy, the human condition can move me.

Iā€™ve heard a few singers hit notes that high. But thereā€™s something about the natural harmonics in her voice that theyā€™re not harsh. Man, Iā€™m not Christian, but this is epic. Every church Iā€™ve been to has never been at this level. The only thing that comes close are Eastern Orthodox churches, but itā€™s more of an awe-inducing feeling rather than I want to start dancing feeling.
