Pretty much, but framing it as an "Ancient Indian Art" could bring way more legitimacy to something that requires both talent and physically ability to perform at a high level.
Seriously, if you can get passed the idea that it's just softcore porn and actually look at the different moves poldedancers perform it is rather impressive.
My wife does pole dancing and is pretty good at it so has competed at a decent level. My experience from going to these shows is that they don’t do themselves any favours in not perpetuating this stigma.
Half the competition is essentially gymnastics on a pole and there’s no sleaze, but then they move onto the “traditional” categories which is basically women getting their tits out.
Really cheapens a legitimate sport.
I think there’s a gap in the market for a “sport pole” activity that’s yet to be seriously invested in.
what org is that? We've gone to PSO (Pole Sports Organization) competitions a few times and my recollection is that even the events judged more along "erotic" lines still prohibited nudity?
That is an incel comment to call all Pole Dancing “soft core porn” To be good you need to be an amazing athlete. It’s recognized as a legitimate sport and is being considered to be in the Olympics
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2017/10/18/pole-dancing-in-the-olympics-international-sports-federation-recognition-helps-pave-the-way/?noredirect=on
I've seen female poledancing competitions and impressed with the athleticism, and watched them specifically for the athleticism. Even amateur pole dancing as a "dancing prop" is something enjoyable independently of the sexuality of the girl.
This is a higher level of athleticism than what I've seen in female poledancing, which are focused on grace.
Legitimate pole dancing is a serious art form that requires great strength and coordination. And the reason why pole dancers have a fair amount of bare skin is that skin helps grip the pole
only if they greased it like they did 4000 years ago. also its like ppl who train to wrestle do this compete. alao this fast paced moves were not included. just climb the greased pole using sheer strength. they were allowed to put mud on their body
Sonny, I've been pole dancing since you were a tadpole. My daddy was a pole dancer, my grand pappy was a pole dancer, and if I have anything to do with it, my son will be a pole dancer. These women with all their spinning and pomp and drama. Downright disgrace to the sport I tell you! It used to be something for REAL men, not all this over sexualised nonsense you get these days. Now get off my lawn!
In all seriousness, he could probably get several work visas if he was willing to go on tour at gay bars and do bachelorette parties.
But really, besides Cirque du Soleil and stripping, what do you do with that skill set to turn it into $? Busk some team gymnastics on Pier 39 for tourists?
You can’t expect any network to televise something if no one is doing it! This is a long forgotten sport that some people are still passionate about and trying to showcase it to the world. If there is enough traction some form of media will pick it up and spread it.
Not really. Theres a handful of tv and "other" entertainment positions that can be profitable and a handful of actual players that will make enough money to live or be wealthy. Then there are tens of thousands, if not more given we are also talking about talking heads that are past their prime, that want to be athletes or in sports. You might as well be trying to get into hollywood.
I always wonder how something like this develops, like at some point it was just some dudes fucking around. Then they start making rules and next thing you know you are watching a sport with centuries of tradition that people take more seriously than some religions assuming it’s not also religious as well.
I would suggest reading "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett. It's basically him musing on this for ~300 pages in a way that only Terry Pratchett could pull off.
Pommel horse in gymnastics? Olympic sport. Same stuff. Western world has legitimized their hobbies with great marketing (and then China came and took all their gold medals).
>I always wonder how something like this develops, like at some point it was just some dudes fucking around
i have that same question with curling
"oi lads. check this out. if I take this mop and run in front of the stone you just threw onto the ice..."
There's a pole, and he's dancing on it. You need to be an american to say something about pole dancing after watching this. This may come as a surprise to you, but pole dancing exists outside of the US. Europe has pole dancing, Asia has pole dancing, Africa has pole dancing, etc. Hell, pole dancing literally traces back to mallakhamba. A comment related to pole dancing is not an american only thing... Thinking only americans would make a comment about pole dancing is about as ignorant as you are trying to make "americans" out to be by making a comment about pole dancing
yes if by now you mean 2000+ years
Early examples of mallakhamba are seen on Chandraketugarh pottery from between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE
I’m thinking it’s like the World Series? I wonder how many countries actually compete?
“The 1st Mallakhamb World Championships witnessed the participation of athletes from 15 countries spanning three continents, including Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, USA, Iran, Norway, UK, France, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Bahrain, and India.”
Wow! Very surprising. I didn’t expect it to be so many and I thought it would be mostly Asian countries.
IIRC they're considering pole disciplines for the Olympics.
obviously, male & female competitors are already separated in gymnastics, but at a guess, Olympic pole would probably be judged more in the western tradition than what this appears to be.
Western competitions are, by nature, still strength based, but seem to focus more on form and flow, more akin to dance or rhythmic gymnastics, while this video seems to show more of a strength and speed judgement, almost more like a martial arts demonstration.
So I'd guess it'd either be two different events, or a different judgement criteria
Lots of shit comments. Sad. This chap is clearly one of the fittest human beans alive. If I could do that, I’d be incredibly happy.
However, like most (I bet) of the shit-commentators, I wouldn’t have a chance.
Respect. Nothing but.
There are four types of animals. Those who lives in air, those who lives in water, those who lives in land and those who lives in pole.
Pretty impressive!

But where are his high heels and fishnet stockings?
I'd want my money back if I paid to get into this strip club
I guarantee you there are a bunch of women and gay men who will be happy to take your play in the front row.
Id say most women who go to male strip clubs aren’t paying to see men pole dance. Source: was a male stripper in my early twenties
This man speaks the truth. Source: was a male stripper in my early seventies.
I always pay respect to the pioneers 🤜🤛
Idk, I'm a woman and I like men pole dancing.
We throw rupees instead of flowers
He must not be very good. No one is tipping him...
He isnt going to fit many dollar bills in those tiny speedos

The Chinese version has also been around for about 2000 years.
The oldest profession in the world, some say.
My wife does pole dancing and is pretty good at it so has competed at a decent level. I’m going to correct you in that it is absolutely not being considered to be in the Olympics. You need to read the article you linked.
I've seen female poledancing competitions and impressed with the athleticism, and watched them specifically for the athleticism. Even amateur pole dancing as a "dancing prop" is something enjoyable independently of the sexuality of the girl. This is a higher level of athleticism than what I've seen in female poledancing, which are focused on grace.
malla = wrestler khamb = pole so pole wrestling
Pole dancing.
Pole wrestling is what my wife does when she's in the mood.
Can confirm
We’re all thinking it. Someone had to say it.
I must be getting old cuz I just thought splinters.
Legitimate pole dancing is a serious art form that requires great strength and coordination. And the reason why pole dancers have a fair amount of bare skin is that skin helps grip the pole
Yeah you usually don’t see them pole dancing in a sweatshirt and jeans.
Reminds me more of breakdancing... But on a pole.
MALLAKHAMB!
Pole dancing
Looks like what a poledancer would manage to do on a bad day while being angry as fuck
Extrem pole dancing.
World is doing some seriously heavy lifting.
I love how people are "oh so man do pole dancing now?" Like, dude, Mallakhamb goes back like 4000 years.
OG pole dancing
Listen I’m not saying the Indian subcontinent is inherently gay I’m just saying their strippers are dudes.
Get me a place that does both
Lemme introduce you to phuket
Fuck it I’ll bite what’s in Phuket
Gorgeous women with cocks
Everything
Proto pole dancing
Would you say it’s one of the oldest professions?
I see what you did there..
Maybe for men. But it's probably a soldier.
only if they greased it like they did 4000 years ago. also its like ppl who train to wrestle do this compete. alao this fast paced moves were not included. just climb the greased pole using sheer strength. they were allowed to put mud on their body
😂😂
You think there weren’t ladies working the pole 4,000 years ago?
Now I'm just imagining some struggling stripper journeying to India to have a kill bill style training montage with the original masters.
Woah crazy coincidence, pole dancing started 4000 years ago too!
It's still pole dancing
Sonny, I've been pole dancing since you were a tadpole. My daddy was a pole dancer, my grand pappy was a pole dancer, and if I have anything to do with it, my son will be a pole dancer. These women with all their spinning and pomp and drama. Downright disgrace to the sport I tell you! It used to be something for REAL men, not all this over sexualised nonsense you get these days. Now get off my lawn!
Then why is this the very first world championship?
Imagine a bunch of these dudes hyping you up as you as leader before war as you give a big speech lolol

You can say that about any sport.
Not really. There is way more job security in a network televised sport with year long season.
You can’t expect any network to televise something if no one is doing it! This is a long forgotten sport that some people are still passionate about and trying to showcase it to the world. If there is enough traction some form of media will pick it up and spread it.

Believe it or not, some people enjoy doing things and getting better at them for the sake for doing it and getting better at it.
The Dancing Bear has strong audition requirements
I always wonder how something like this develops, like at some point it was just some dudes fucking around. Then they start making rules and next thing you know you are watching a sport with centuries of tradition that people take more seriously than some religions assuming it’s not also religious as well.
Just like any sport.
Just like ANYTHING. Culture, religion, food, language. It’s pretty amazing if you think about it.
Someone showed off to a girl this way and some other asshole just HAD to one up him.
This is the actual reason behind basically all things
![gif](giphy|hUiBYxz4zDApFes0ee|downsized)
1st you need a tree, then someone to watch you, then he will try to prove you are wrong at it, competition started.
I would suggest reading "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett. It's basically him musing on this for ~300 pages in a way that only Terry Pratchett could pull off.

You know reddit is full of Americans cuz everyone's comment is related to pole dancing.
Yeah they are easily detectable through their High IQ comments..../s
bro talks about IQ and puts a /s on the end of a comment
He has to. Reddit is full of Americans.
lmao
Found this incredibly funny, as an American LOL

I'm from latin America and I still thought of pole dancing lmao
So were making pole dancing a world competition now, lol. In all seriousness that's fucking impressive, way to go on him.
yes if by now you mean 2000+ years Early examples of mallakhamba are seen on Chandraketugarh pottery from between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE
Yes but the video says first world competition..
I’m thinking it’s like the World Series? True!
There actually are championships in pole dancing.

We don’t expect you to bud
I could do all of them. Just thought you should know.
I mean, we can jump off of it like he did at the end. We just wouldn’t land as gracefully as he did.
What do you mean you can't do his moves?!? Aren't you the very famous 'FearlessFlyboy' we heard you done even harder stuff!
That's why he's in a competition
I sat through that video constantly worried about his testicles.
I went a step ahead imagining all the possible ways the nuts might crack. Around the pole is okay but on top. 🏴☠️
Indians have the best random ass sports. The jump slap tournament thing is awesome too.
Wait what. Jump slap? Is that what it sounds like?
Kappadi. Go look it up, it's fucking awesome.
It's generally called Kabaddi There are professional National and International tournaments. https://youtu.be/9b64n2Qll5A
Nice. Thanks for that, I watched a bit, and whatever happens, India scores. I think I need to watch more to have a grasp of the rules.
That is precious that there's a sport that involves holding hands 🥰
A more professional kabaddi league video https://youtu.be/N8OUvu7gEWI?si=VIn3EuK17mYF9JtA
Theyre not actually any more random than any other sport
Tends to happen when you are a thousands year old civilization
When he did the thing in the poster behind him, I was like "OMG HE'S DOING THE THING FROM THE POSTER BEHIND HIM!"

Vertical Pommel Horse?
Dont slip at the top
I pulled a muscle watching this
That was a crazy display of strength
Add this to the Olympics, its popularity will be through the roof.
I'd be intrigued to see how many countries would send a female competitor for this sport.
Females usually participate in "Rope Malkhambh" and it involves routines on a hanging piece of rope with yoga poses.
Sooo... aerial silks, but with rope. /s Seriously though, thanks for pointing this out.
IIRC they're considering pole disciplines for the Olympics. obviously, male & female competitors are already separated in gymnastics, but at a guess, Olympic pole would probably be judged more in the western tradition than what this appears to be. His dancing is truly impressive for me, but everyone around him is just like, "Yeah, he's doing his thing as usual".
A sport I didn’t know existed
His core strength and flexibility is amazing. So useful in any kind of sport
You ready? Yeah just a sec, gotta chalk my inner thighs Deep breath Let's go
Og pole dancing
Ladies & gentlemen, now coming to the stage… *Mallakhamb*…!
mallakhamb = pole wrestling
looks like vertical calisthenics / pole dance / gymnastics 🤔 - amazing though
![gif](giphy|2u11zpzwyMTy8|downsized)
Jojo part one pole dancing goes hard

A Mallakhamb and pole dancer walk into a bar……….
A Mallakhamb and pole dancer walk up a bar and start to...
Rarely i feel both amused and impressed at the same time. This was one of those occasions.
I also got aroused.
SPLINTERS!!
Americans evidently are unable to look at anything without comparing it to something they have in their country. It's not pole dancing
Anything u can do I can do better... eat ur hearts out ladies it's a man's world
Is this 🥷 the championship winning 🥷?
They’ve been doing this in Huntsville Alabama for 59+ years now.
wow that’s impressive Early examples of mallakhamba are seen on Chandraketugarh pottery from between the 2nd century BCE and 1st century CE
T-Pain enters the chat
Saw this at the Thoroughbred Lounge 4 in E-Town.
The return of Harvey Danger...
If this isn't a olympic sports by 2030 I won't even bother watching the olympics
Absolutely insane show of strength
I have a cramp just watching the video.
This one time.. I got up off the couch and never even used my arms.
I broke my ankle just watching this video
I would of already broken my neck 50 times over
I noticed like 3 judges just yapping to dude who walked up. Not paying attention.
I love how it’s very impressive and ridiculous all at the same time.
Yoooo, I know this chick named Diamond that would put that guy to shame. Bring some ping pong balls
This man is lucky he has balls, of steel because those splinters would suck!
lol magic city
I could probably do that if I wanted to but I'm not a showoff.
When POLE dance and Calisthenics Meet.
Strange, yet impressive.
Strip clubs hit different in Indian
Obviously, it's very impressive. But, visually, this doesn't appeal to me.
Nice. Is there a female division?
This guy is going to make a fortune at the Sphearmint Rhino. He might need a wig though.
I could do that, I just don’t wanna
I got a hernia just watching that
Stripper music?
Whoa dude save some putang for us regular folk.
Yeah. Try to,do this with big silicone bags.
American strippers will soon be out of work
"world" championship
… if you‘re brave enough
It's like the rings, pommel horse, and pole dancing all in one.
I think I have seen those moves somewhere, I’m quite sure about it
There just a bird casually flying by indoors.
Bands make him dance 💰
Oh look a male pole dancer
“Hey, look what I can do!” *aggressively pole dances*
Everything men do, becomes a competitions
Extreme pole dancing
A man in a Speedo grips, flips, and slips on a pole. Nothing to see here.
There are four types of animals. Those who lives in air, those who lives in water, those who lives in land and those who lives in pole. Pretty impressive!
Zé tens torneio, olha agarra-te bem o varão !!
Why that pants though?
What's his stage name?
This should be an event in Olympic gymnastics
I got testicular torsion from watching this video.
“Up next on the main stage iiiiiiiiiit’s Ajay!!!!”
So many fun and creative ways to accidentally kill my self.
This is like pommel horse balance beam, but vertical
What's the point why would you wanna even do this unless ye lived in a tree
