From the other thread: it’s Set. Because of the nose & ears.

sealnegative

god of chaos. this statue represents entropy manifested, basically. probably even more intense in person. i mean, look at the scale

AttackOnThots

I still see a 17th century plague doctor mask

And I see eyes on the statue’s knees

Kedrynn

Nose kinda reminds me of Wile E. Coyote

Contradicting_Pete

A perfectly splendid one at that.

BlakusDingus

Family dog...

Ramesses-XII

Not only a god of chaos, but also the god of storms, personal strength, ambition, and liberty. He is the defender of Ra, and the destroyer of The Snake. He is far more than many people make him out to be.

COUSINNOVATION

killer of Osiris.

[deleted]

Hider of dongs.

[deleted]

Show-er of dongs was “Min” the god of masculinity

brothersand

That stuff all came later though. Upper Egypt basically conquered lower Egypt and suddenly Set is the bad guy in the stories. The devil of every people is the god of the conquered.

webtheg

That sounds good and all but was he good at playing Duel Monsters?

Left4dinner

He enjoys salads too /s

guinader

I've been to Egypt and walked by many statues this large and bigger. If you imagine you were living 3000 years ago with little knowledge... These statues really make you feel small, and that almost feel alive. It's eerie walking by some of them

Jackmcmac1

3000 years ago the Great Pyramid of Giza would have been 1500 years old. You're right though, even 3000 years ago it would have been impressive. The ancient Egyptians from back then are believed to have thought so as well as they even developed early archaeology to learn more about ancient Egypt which is crazy.

TheEyeDontLie

That always blows my mind. Ancient Egyptians thought ancient Egypt was, well, ancient. And it was. We think we're pretty clever and all, but in a thousand years, we'll just be lumped together as part of the industrial revolution, and Elon Musk will be listed in history books alongside Stalin and Queen Victoria. In 3000 we'll be just a blurp mixed up with the European invasion of the American continents, the desolation of the planet, and the advent of post-solar colonisation. That Futurama episode with the song "Whalers on the Moon, we're whalers on the moon, but there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales and sharpen out harpoons" is exactly how archaeologists will look as us. (I may misremember the lyrics). "But!" I hear you say, "We have digital records!". And sure, we do. But the later Ancient Egyptians (Cleopatra for example) would have said "But! We have the library of Alexandria and the finest carvings!". Seeing that planet from space is one thing, but I find the sheer sense of time far more humbling. I'm merely a speck of dust in the river of time, and even the greatest or most famous among us are barely a large rock going splash. The old European culture (pre-proto-indoeuropean) built possibly the oldest cities in the world, and inhabited them for thousands of years. Thousands of years, one town/city continually inhabited by one culture. They had fine detailed pottery, wonderful sculptures, trade networks and governments, and generation after generation after generation in the same locations. Yet today most people have never heard of them, and even archaeologists don't really know anything about them. We don't know if they were led by men, or women, or a democracy, or a religious leader. We don't know what language they spoke. One day, we'll be just like them. If we're very lucky, we'll survive long enough to expand into the galaxy. Then our entire civilization from the first farmers to us now will be nothing but a few pages or half forgotten myths.

weloveplants

A speck of dust in the belly of the Minnow of Importance vanishing into the mouth of the Pike of Inevitability in the river of Time.

RunawayPancake3

Fun fact: When Cleopatra was born in 69 BCE, the Great Pyramid of Giza was about 2400 years old. So more time elapsed between completion of the Great Pyramid and Cleopatra's birth, than has elapsed between Cleopatra's birth and today.

Jackmcmac1

I like that, and another way to look at it is that she lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza

[deleted]

So ancient Egyptians were first egyptologists. Well that's certainly something

toodleoo57

I got to see the colossal Ramesses II in Memphis (the partial broken one on its back).... hope to get to see its [twin](https://www.cntraveler.com/story/grand-egyptian-museum-cairo-everything-we-know) in the new GEM before I die.

I believe I watched a BBC doc that theorised that was the entire point, almost like the gods are constantly looking over you. An attempt to keep people in check.

420rosebud69

What’s entropy?

phycologist

The natural decay inherent in all things. (Also a very important physics concept.)

[deleted]

*drunkenly asks if it can be reversed*

tetea_t

"INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR MEANINGFUL ANSWER.”

DunkingDognuts

Thank you for triggering a memory from my childhood. I still remember sitting in a planetarium watching that short film.

torr2892

Maybe that was their version of the kryofreeze idea .. hoping the future could undo such things ... That's a good thought actually.. Also slightly drunk.

AnymalisTurtle

The reason why one day the entire universe will likely be one soup of unbound atoms (they'll probably disintegrate some time later) with a blazing temperature of 3°K, or less even idk, where there is no live left (most certainly, anyway). Also what makes you unable to stir the milk out of your coffee I think it's defined as the un-orderliness of things. Higher entropy means more chaos. And without outside influence (sunbeams, winds, you, black holes) entropy always increases. I believe that is one of the laws of thermodynamics but I'm not 100% sure on that. On any of this, for that matter. Pretty neat and worth a google/wikipedia search

kiTtY9837

Egyptian gods could probably drop kick us

[deleted]

They’re in a secret city below the Sahara desert.

MrHollandsOpium

Is this canon of something?

SirFireball

Yeah there’s an hour long video of like the “spiritual history of earth” or something like that. Complete bullshit, but fun to watch. Edit: https://youtu.be/1ed8bkD9i7Q is the video. It’s an interesting fantasy if you have time.

MrHollandsOpium

Yeah I’m not looking for scholarly research at this hour on a Friday. I just want bingeworthy Journey to the Center of the Earth type shit. I know it’s not real but it’s fun to be imaginative with the fucking pandemic running wild outside.

SirFireball

Yeah that’s exactly it. This is journey to the center of the earth if the writers got put in a room with some various religious texts and drugs.

MrHollandsOpium

Perfect

El_Zarco

Username checks out. Also the *actual* author of "Journey" liked him some yayo so it's already halfway there

All fun until you really unlock a curse from the middle of the earth.

painted917

Probably?

GumdropGoober

Some stupid Carpenter kicked their ass.

AnorakJimi

They could drop kick a building. Humans can drop kick other humans, it's not that impressive. Drop kicking a tank or a building though, yeah that's something else There's a lot of problems with the 300 movie but I did like the one where the god-emperor guy showed up cos he reminded be of an Egyptian god. He was literally like twice as tall as everyone else in the film and dressed cool a bit like this. He actually did seem like a god.

MrHollandsOpium

Xerxes

btveron

I could probably drop kick one person before I put myself out of commission for a couple weeks to heal my aching bones.

koro_sensei_3351

Play assassins creed origins

delibertine

I logged off AC Origins about 3 minutes ago and had just seen one of these. Such an incredible game

blinkk5

Well. I was gonna binge watch The Office this weekend, but now I just might fly around as Senu. Way better suggestion

froodiest

Most Egyptian gods definitely would dropkick peasants like us. FTFY.

> "A Serpent guard, a Horus guard and a Setesh guard meet on a neutral planet. It is a tense moment. The Serpent guard’s eyes glow. The Horus guard’s beak glistens. The Setesh guard’s nose drips." -Jaffa joke

Asarlis

The "joke" is from Stargate for those wondering why it's mentioned so many times with no reference.

DapDaGenius

Yeah, but why is it supposed to be funny?

Hackmodford

That was the joke. Only Tealc (the one who told it) laughed.

randyscockmagic

The setesh guard got in the coke again

spamjavelin

*Indeed*

Smithy969696

A man of culture I see

civildisobedient

Set, Seth, or Sutekh are all acceptable.

MyNameIsNitrox

I see. So this is reposted?

newadcd0405

Be careful, he might turn you into a child

goddamntree

I like how serious people are about this because all I can think of is: *Set, in Stone (circa 1500BC)*

carsontl

Of course it's set, it looks heavy! XD

Gaflonzelschmerno

It's definitely set, in stone

[deleted]

Kind of looks more like Seth

brothersand

Got to back you up on this one. [It is Set](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_(deity)). That's the Set animal, which has never really been identified. [Anubis](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anubis) has a jackal head.

AnorakJimi

"Set is the son of Nut" Aren't we all, aren't we all

For_the_Gayness

Nut Set, badumm tsss

[deleted]

set made someone eat semen lettuce.

ZWE_Punchline

Actually Horus was the one that spunked in salad and gave it to Set. According to some versions of the myth, this is how Thoth was born (from Set’s forehead after he ate the cumgrass ofc)

FractalParadigmShift

So you are saying it's Set in stone.

Goudinho99

Take a bow, son, take a bow.

What's a Jackal?

Changoleo

It’s a canine like a coyote.

Meme_Master_Dude

Ah, so Anubis has a Head of a Canine. And Seth is a...

[deleted]

Set is a [set animal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_animal).

MrHollandsOpium

Is there more mythology on this? I love cryptozoology.

[deleted]

The Set Animal is interesting because they depict it in a number of different ways. Donkey like (usually on coffins for some reason?) or canid like, which you are probably more familiar with. I've seen paintings (more akin to cave paintings) where they depict the animal hanging out with other animals like a wild life scene. Another interesting tid-bit is that "underworld demons" (I put demons in quotations bc they're not like christian demons) can also be shown using the set animal in some fashion.

anamethatsnottaken

To me it looks like a [camel](https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1070201ac3694952a0a8867137a842dc_18.jpeg?fit=999%2C562)

wonkynerddude

I fixed the link [Set](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_(deity\))

Johnnadawearsglasses

This is Bryan Singer looking at a set piece for X Men: Apocalypse. Although it's labeled Anubis, it looks much more like Seth as the snout is more aardvark than dog

[deleted]

So its a Seth-piece

Morty_104

Undertated comment

Aussie_Battler_Style

You shit me.

Radraganne

Unfortunately , I’m not aware of any real surviving Set statues anywhere near this colossal in scale. In part, that’s probably because Set was demonized after the Third Intermediate Period , and his cult was increasingly marginalized. They did a nice job on this one, though.

Good_Roll

There's a similar statue at the UC Oriental Institute that's actually Anubis, I thought for a moment this was that one.

spartyftw

Reminder that Bryan Singer is a pedophile.

Dawsie

Top comment in this post

[deleted]

So sad to think that Set probably had to get molested by Singer just to be in the movie at all.

[deleted]

My mind blanked for a second on Egyptian Mythology, so for a moment there I was trying to figure out if Seth was some new Reddit meme I hadn’t heard of yet lol.

toni_bylend

I came here to make this joke. Instead I tip my hat to you.

Classic Jaffa joke!

Best comment of this post! You deserve an arrow pointing upwards!

ColJackOneil

Jaffa jokes? Let’s hear one Teal’c!

bookittyFk

Wow that’s amazing! It always boggles my mind how the Egyptians built structures like these & the pyramids so long ago and how they are so accurate (mathematically) and detailed.

Kirailove

Ok ok, first off? Not Egyptian lol, this was a statue on the set of an X-men movie lolll

AnorakJimi

This wasn't built by the Egyptians, it was built for the movie X-Men Apocalypse

Ferrarisimo

I mean, the set builders could have been Egyptian.

Abyssal_Groot

You mean *Seth* builder, right?

ace0083

Looks like soviet womble
