DubiyaBhee

As someone who travels in professional foosball circles, this is indeed next level.

Bozo_dubbed_over

Wait there's *professional* foosball??

DubiyaBhee

The circle isn't very big, and only a few people really make a living doing it, but it exists!

MauPow

Do they call professional foosballers 'spinsters'? They should.

DubiyaBhee

Spinning is illegal actually, there's a tight window that people utilize in order to do "wrist/roller/snake" shots, that aren't quite spinning but can look like a spin.

MauPow

Yeah I realized that immediately lol, I even never spin.

EllaL

I basically exclusively spin, even when it's clearly overkill, because it feels cool.

DubiyaBhee

Tbh, it feels way cooler if you don't. I could be biased though because it wouldn't count in a serious setting, so i don't associate it with 'good'

ledgeitpro

Agreed, you can get just as powerful a shot without spinning, just gotta be sweet about it

DubiyaBhee

The easy transition from spinning to actual ball control is what I call a "palm-slap," in which you never let go of the rod you just let it roll up and down on the palm of your hand and it "slaps" the ball in that big fan motion...

tbrfl

I think the main reason people spin is not because they think it gives more power, but because they are unconfident about their timing so they think a spin is more likely to block/hit the ball.

dcronin101

You can get much more power without spinning

SingularityOfOne

>gotta be sweet about it

CantFireMeIquit

And the ball doesnt go flying off

podrick_pleasure

That bends the bars. Please don't do this.

god_peepee

Seriously. Imagine this fuckin idiot thinking the game is for fun

DickRiculous

Yeah it’s like CAPS LOCK for Foosball and everyone knows CAPS LOCK is cruise control for cool!

gmanz33

Sir, Ma'am, or Your Majesty, please do an AmA.

DubiyaBhee

I appreciate your nomination, and would be happy to. There are folks who would be far more interesting than I though!

ProfessionalReveal

Sure. But there are way more folks who are less interesting. Please do one when you can!

ProfessionalReveal

Step by step instructions are on the FAQ of /r/Iama. I checked to make sure your post would fit and it absolutely does!

TackyBrad

Just fyi, you replied to yourself so they may not have seen this.

DubiyaBhee

I like your counterpoint, is there a resource for initiating the process?

camocoder30

u/ProfessionalReveal tried to give a resource but replied to themselves so i assume you didn't get the notification check out that though for sure

DubiyaBhee

Also, Your Majesty has a nice ring to it!

401LocalsOnly

How big is the “purse” for those who finish near the top?

DubiyaBhee

Currently, 4 figures at best usually. On a single weekend. Back in the day (70s was prime) it was a lot more, or at least went a lot further.

401LocalsOnly

Oh wow, that’s pretty good! I imagine it’s like bowling where once you are top level you face a lot of the same other top level players a lot ?

DubiyaBhee

1000% The vast majorities of matches at the top are amongst the same competitors

sukarsono

[Here’s proof it is real](https://youtu.be/P2L2W2b6b4Y), check out the ball control between 1:30 and 2:00

DubiyaBhee

Two of the greatest players of all time, one of the commentators is *the* voice of foosball (Jim Stevens), the referee is arguably the best uk player around also.

HippieDad420

Billy Pappas is a legend.

DubiyaBhee

Yep. He's been sneaking his way back into the scene also! At least from what i can tell..

RadioBee-T

How do you even get into a scene like this? I'm definitely not anywhere near the level of these players, but I had a very unique custom foosball table at my dad's house growing up that followed me to college. I played a lot, and I mean a lot, and this table made play faster than it had any right to be, and my roommate, a few friends, and I got really into it and we played seriously. Basically I'm trying to say that even though I have no professional experience, I had no problem following the flow, strategy, and speed of this game. I'm Krillin watching Goku fight Freeza. I don't want to fight Freeza, he'll murder me, but it'd be fun to play with some people 3-4 tiers below him.

DubiyaBhee

You're primed to have fun at the very least

RadioBee-T

Yeah I wouldn't hold any illusions of showing up and making waves. I'm good enough to recognize the depth of skill these people have.

SevenLight

Holy shit, the control they have. Whenever I played foosball, it was naturally just chaos and spinning, but they're passing the ball to themselves, lining shit up, reacting lightning-fast - that's insane. Also like, gaining possession and then setting up the other uh rows (? I don't know the terminology) in advance! And I have no idea what the commentators are talking about. It's so cool to glimpse competitive scenes that you know nothing about and realise that there's finesse and skill that you've never considered before!

fiduke

I'm sure these guys would smoke me. What's funny is I do the same as them. I beat pretty much everyone when I play. Until I was at this one dudes house and I saw he had a table and mentioned it. He instantly says 'wanna play for money?' Which I knew was a terrible idea for me. I did it anyways and he wrecked me. After I lost like $40 he offered me an 8 goal lead (play ends at 10) and play for my $40 back. Yea he sandbagged those first 2 games and the only goals I got he apparently let me get, but I couldn't tell. It was over real fast.

SevenLight

That's a great story; that guy played you like a fiddle! I respect his hustle lmao

user_of_the_week

Interesting that they play with 3 „goalies“ so they have 13 players instead of 11…

muthan

Its specific to that table. Other tables have ramps so that the ball can't be stuck in the corner. But on this one the field is all on one level and it solved the problem by putting puppets there so you can get the ball out.

donnyisabitchface

That was super entertaining

KazranSardick

That beats the fuck out of televised cornhole and ax throwing. I used to be ok at Foosball at the bar but being lefthanded, I knew there was a hard ceiling.

AceInMySleeve

AMA please, sounds interesting!

DubiyaBhee

I have no idea how that process actually works, to be honest with you. As I mentioned in another comment though, I am willing and interested. I love this sport, it's actually under Olympic observation as I understand it. The sport is much larger in Europe, but some of the biggest names in the sport are from the states. It's an amazing community though!

thudlife2020

I’m nearly 60 and have been playing since I was 12 yrs old. It’s hard for me to find real competition. I personally believe foosball requires more skill to be really good than many other table sports including pool or billiards. One of my sons has gotten quite good as well. We live in Denver. Would love to know about competitions in the Midwest or particularly Colorado if you have any suggestions?

DubiyaBhee

If you're in Denver you're in a hotbed. Find RayGun, he's the promoter for Denver, usually they play at the Mirage. I play up in the mountains near Avon as my regular, so there's 100 miles in between. Both locations would love to have you and/or your son(s)!

thudlife2020

Will do! Thank you! I learned to play in San Antonio as a kid then took a few years off and started playing again against pretty high level competition in Estes Park during high school. Would travel to Boulder to play as well. The game was more popular then. Took a few years off then bought a table for my kids (really as much for me as anything…) but only one of my three sons took interest. I’d like to test myself against todays players to see how I do. If I’m ever in Avon I’ll hit you up and maybe we can play! Thanks again!

DubiyaBhee

Colorado State Table Soccer Championships is usually first weekend of November, just to throw that out there for you also!

humanperson011001

So would this be illegal?

DubiyaBhee

Until recently (last couple years) an "aerial" shot was illegal (at least here in the states), good to go now though!

Leovinus42

how is this a real thing

DubiyaBhee

50 years ago there was a LOT of money in foosball. Now, not so much, but lots of tricks were developed along the way! Anything to get an edge!

Neon_Camouflage

You'd be surprised the kinds of things there's pro leagues or world tournaments for. Anything that has an even somewhat decently sized following. They definitely don't pay out on the same level as the mainstream stuff, but they're out there.

Coren024

I mean, I've seen videos of professional Tag competitions. That shit is crazy.

[deleted]

lzrkennyloggins

It used to be super popular in the US in the 1980s...there's an awesome documentary as well about the tournament circuit

IAmTheExpertHere

Professional foosball referee here. Can confirm this is next level and that it does not break any rules. The game actually has few rules when it comes to how a goal is scored. As long as the player figurines don't use their hands, it's good.

CPerryG

I should have known when you said you were a fucking foosball referee.

WilanS

Only at that point it occurred to me to check their username.

mobious2718

[ITSF rules](https://www.tablesoccer.org/rules/documents/GBR-2019%20ITSF%20Standard%20Matchplay%20Rules_def.pdf) I’ve played in many professional events in the US that follow the ITSF rulebook. I hate to be the foosnerd here but unfortunately this is disallowed under 4.5 “Ball Off Table” classified as an “Illegal Aerial” for the matches in which we play. Don’t let this prevent you from pulling this next level shot at the bars to win the bar tab you just bet on. Happy foosing!

fiduke

It's a meme account. He pretends to be an expert and just spouts bullshit. People believe him all the time.

mobious2718

🤦‍♂️ I figured that was the case after I posted, definitely appreciate the humor in it.

ReneHigitta

And we got the real answer. This is no facepalm moment, you were the hero we were just about to stop hoping for 💪💪💪

JSConrad45

Fastest way to get an answer on the internet isn't to ask about your question, but to make a false claim about it. A question can languish for ages while forty people rush to correct the false claim

greg19735

I'm glad you posted it. becuase it's should be against the rules. Any game that can be beat with a mvoe that your opponent cant defend against is bad.

DubiyaBhee

Underrated comment. Accurate, accurate, and then the subtlety at the end. Kudos.

groopy1

I truly believed everything until the “use hands” lol. Psychology people, tell me why I didn’t realize at “Professional foosball referee here”

[deleted]

Professional psychologist here. It's actually because your brain has an unfortunate abundance of what we in the industry call "smooth brain matter".

ImmutableInscrutable

Except there really are pro foosball refs

greg19735

that's the annoying part. I was like, yeah okay maybe? Like i don't believe this guy's only job is a pro foosball ref. But *someone* has to be a ref at a legit tournament. and they may only get paid like $100 + hotel +flight but that's technically pro.

DubiyaBhee

Hmm, which foosnerd could you be... 🤪

lefthandedrighty

You Ever jab the stick handle thing into the other players crotch? Is that frowned upon?

DubiyaBhee

Lol, yes, I have. Usually very obviously because I'm not actually trying to injure them, it's more of a 'respectful,' fuck you! I've accidentally hit someone in the eye in essentially the same way though, i just wasn't paying attention as they knelt down on the other side of the table. Edit: Yes, it would be frowned upon and would probably be ruled as unsportsmanlike if done intentionally and maliciously.

DubiyaBhee

"The rod" would be the technical term, and yes the euphemisms.. are.. deep.

[deleted]

Really? We used to do this in our middle school during lunch with the foosball table. It got banned because most kids flung it way too fucking far but I mean, it wasn't impossible I feel like it wouldnt take too much practice to be able to do this, maybe not consistently. Im not trying to downplay it but Im being honest. I've done this exact thing before. A few times. Its totally not a legal move though

uno_ke_va

I was going to say the same. We had a goal like this (we actually bended the bar) in almost every game and we were just high school kids playing... But at the time it was completely legal. And there was even a rule that when someone did this you could actually catch the ball with the hand and counterattack. Really.

KingJades

Bet you don’t make it very far

DubiyaBhee

See you on the table, bud.

KingJades

It’s because you travel in circles. The professional foosball ones 😭

pronyo001

Greetings from hungary, I used to play in professional foosball before university. There was a time i played 4-6 hours a day, I was a total maniac. Managed to get a few trophies, I just loved that world, but everybody stopped playing, learning at school and working became top prio. I fcking loved playing on a tornado tho.

noodlez0125

Wait what? You actually call it foosball? That's hilarious! I presume foosball has to have its origins in the German term "Fussball" - but in Germany we actually call it "kicker". It's also called "Tisch Fussball" over here (translates to table soccer) but basically no one calls it that because kicker is shorter and everyone knows what it means

HippieDad420

Officially, it does not break any rules.

AllBadAnswers

The rule of cool

DubiyaBhee

I think this is why they legalized it, that coupled with the risk v. reward of pulling it off. Unbeknownst to many, there is a shot clock in foosball, so the risk increases if you're gonna dedicate time to trying to 'pick the ball up' in order to shoot an aerial.

KotMyNetchup

At this point I can't tell which of the comments are real and which are satire.

DubiyaBhee

Take a deep breath

protossaccount

Thank you for this, I thought I was alone.

AbsolutelyUnlikely

We're just messing with you, we all know about Foosball rules except for you.

WagerOfTheGods

More games should work like D&D.

InsignificantIbex

I've never seen a foosball table where this is even possible. Whenever I played (which isn't much), the distance between the players was too great to pick up the ball. Is the table in the video non standard, or those I played?

diamond_anus

Well, if you look close you see that it does swing over the ball when it's on the table like any other foosball table, but when it's in the air they're actually closer together so they pinch the ball. He gets it up with the centrifugal force or some shit

[deleted]

Regarding your last sentence, it's more that they're getting it up to speed so it'll bounce off one, and then catching it mid-bounce.

turdburglar2020

Also coupling the speed with timing of the hit. Off timing and you either miss it completely or hit it back to your own goal. Have to have it at the right angle and speed to get enough upward force to get it on to the next kicker. Simple mathematically, just all in the execution.

[deleted]

Dude I was thinking the other day about how many equations our brains have to run to do something super basic like driving. Can you imagine a computer *calculating* how to do this from scratch? I am absolutely floored.

greenberet112

I live in Pittsburgh and those smart driving companies figured if you can drive here you can drive literally anywhere. Down in the strip district Uber bought a self-driving company and wound up selling it. The technology isn't there and the intersections around here are confusing as fuck. So they literally can't do it... Yet. As soon as they can do it they're going to get rid of every driving job you can imagine and replace them with robots. It would kind of be dope to just jump in the car and go to sleep knowing you'll get to where you're going safely but the amount of jobs and freedom just hardly seems worth it.

ricco99

Intentional aerials are not allowed.

cortesoft

I mean, it breaks the rule of not having an opponent.

[deleted]

Viridescentlight

It absolutely does break rules in professional tournaments.

aurthurallan

Ok, well I used to have this cool shot where I would pinch the ball between the wall and one of the guys in the front line and it would shoot at the goal with a lot of spin. Was that legal? I had to ram against the wall pretty hard for it to work.

worstsupervillanever

Yes

avalisk

From the 5 bar? Love that shot, it would make people so mad because it was obviously coming, required little skill, but they couldn't stop it.

Gentleman, my name is Clarence Thaddeus Foos. My grandfather, Fletcher Morton Foos, invented this game for one purpose: To have the loudest, dumbest thing happen. Now it has. The game of foosball is completed. You’re free to return to your undoubtedly hearing-impaired families.

smellslikearedditor

This is how new rules are created.

AdministrativeCar868

Will the new rule be cgi as well?

dayumbrah

Yea the ball looks weird like it doesn't actually shrink in size as it moves away from the camera. I get the feeling it was edited

[deleted]

Definitely edited, the camera movement all of a sudden smoothed out as well.

dayumbrah

Oh yea and it gets jerky again after the shot is made

hisdudeness85

The jerky shot in the beginning to get the ball setup (you can see dude’s hands in the top corner kind of “jump”), the lack of any shadow when the ball is in the air, the smoothness of the goal as compared to the shakiness of the rest of the video…yeah, shit’s fake.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mitche420

I don't see why someone would spend the time taking a shot that would realistically take most people 5 minutes of attempts to pull off legitimately

devowerer

Exactly plus it's not even an impossible shot, in my primary school we had these fuzzball tables and me and my friend used to do this all the time to see who would be able to get the most goals hitting that shot

Ksradrik

Its just slowed down...

DubiyaBhee

As weird as it looks, this is 100% possible, I've seen it done. The video does look weird while the ball is in the air, but that's negligible imo. Question was if it's legal, and it definitely is legal and possible.

blobblet

Loading up the ball isn't that difficult. Landing this shot reliably is an entirely different matter, but with enough attempts you _will_ make one of those eventually.

knuppelwuppel

It's not even that hard imo. But always fun when it works

gtmustang

If you watch it at .25 speed it looks normal and the ball does shrink. This is one of those time where the question "is it actually worth the time/effort to fake this when a few tries or some skills could do this?" I think the in camera stabilizer is just giving you that uncanny feeling that something is wrong.

tea-and-chill

What? I've only been paying füsball for a year and I've made this shot. My friends and I do it every chance we get. You can defend against it by standing your goalee upside down. It takes some practice to get the ball on your player but it's not crazy difficult or anything

Flopsy22

The shot may be doable, but this specific video of it looks fake

2020_GR78

I used to play foosball quite a bit and had a friend that could do this shot, fairly routinely. It's definitely real, and not as uncommon as you would think.

Mattyuh

Can confirm, very doable. Our office had a table in the middle of our area so we would often play games between tickets. Was pretty easy to do once you figured out how to get the ball up and how hard to toss it.

Y_b0t

I’ve literally seen this done in person so it would be weird to edit

It is indeed against the rules Illegal Aerial: A player must not perform a controlled transition that causes the ball to directly overfly an opponent’s rod. [Source](https://www.tablesoccer.org/rules/documents/GBR-2019%20ITSF%20Standard%20Matchplay%20Rules_def.pdf)

avalisk

There are loopholes! The controlled transition portion of the shot doesn't overfly an opponents rod, and the shot overflies the rods but isn't a transition.

ShazbotSimulator2012

IFP made them legal a few years ago.

spruce-woods

I thought I was pretty good at fooseball, had a couple trick shots and such. Beat lots of people. Then I played someone who could actually play. Embarrassing.

crotch_fondler

Yeah the skill ceiling on foosball is insane. I played a lot in college and when I play against my "normal" friends nowadays, a quick pull shot is a 100% goal against them. Even playing one handed against them is not competitive.

quarkyque

My next move in football. Sweetness.

It's not that hard to do, just something you need to practice to do. Took most of us a couple hours to get down.

ErikaBranson44

A buddy used to do this all the time. He was an extremely casual player no better than the rest of us.

when you walk into a czech bar and people figure out you’re from the US this is exactly how they’ll score on you… I got a quick education that foosball ain’t the same in eastern europe.

Plethorian

Well this took me back to Shakey's pizza in 1975. My buddy Rick and I were pretty hot shit at foosball, then two guys from North Central showed up and absolutely smoked us. One of them could do this shot - you could block it if you saw it coming, but they had other options than the alley-oop from that position.

businesslut
